Extended family is from Liberal, Kansas - pheasants, antelope, coyotes, the most beautiful sunsets over the table of the great plains. I was born in Hays in ‘55, lived in St. Francis, Salina, Topeka and Manhattan. Such wonderful places to grow up… Kansas is a blessed land.

I was born in Wichita and still living here. When I was younger, I remember thinking how much I'd love to move to a very big metro like Chicago or something, but now after all these years driving to those places and seeing the sights, I've noticed Wichita has a good balance of being big enough that you can generally do all the things you need and want to do, but small enough that heavy traffic is never really an inconvenience. The only slow-moving freeway traffic we get is a 3-mile stretch of US-54 going through downtown to the I-135 interchange at 5:30 on a weekday. Every now and then if we want to do something more than what Wichita has, Kansas City and Oklahoma City are only a couple hundred miles away. We can go there, do whatever and come back all in one day. I've really grown to like this city.
Also, I share her aversion to John Denver created by torturous road trips.

Did you ever drive down Pawnee during rush hour? I lived near Harry and Webb Rd and worked over near the flea market. Former boyfriend drowned in the Arkansas River during River Fest. Oh and the tornado of 2012 hit my place so yeah…tornados are real and my grandmas name was Dorothy.

@poisonlady1965 Yes, I commonly drive down Pawnee during rush hour. I also lived near Harry and Webb when I was younger. The tornado of 2012 came within hundreds of feet to my house. We had a huge willow in our back yard lose a primary branch which took out a third of its canopy. Sorry to hear about your boyfriend.

LOL So many things I can relate to in this video!! Hello from NE Kansas! Funny thing, I just recently found Car Wizards channel, but did not know that he was Kansas based, until I found your channel! Both great channels, subbed to both. LOL The wind aspect cracked me up. My other channel is an outdoors channel, and have have had many video ruined by the wind on seemingly nice days. I have not been to Halstead, but do have an acquaintance from there. I have heard that it is a nice town. I say Kansas is only boring if a person is boring and only has limited interests and activities. Thanks for an awesome video!!

I’ve always found it to be the prettiest town I’ve ever seen. I’ll be moving from here soon but I can’t wait to come back, great place to grow up. We are retired and plan to bring our 2021 Suby Crosstrek and our barely driven '07 Lexus RX350 for the Car Wizard to maintain! We plan to start a squirrel rehab sanctuary in our future backyard! We will bring the "Rosstreck" only has 26k miles and its the daily driver, also will bring the '07 RX350- has 152k miles but only driven maybe 500 miles a year for the last 2 years. Greg is not a fan of the Crosstrek, he likes the Lexus more, smoother and more reliable. He was a mechanic back in the day.

I was born and raised in Kansas, in lenexa. I gre up, just outsied of Olathe, then moved to Wichita when I was a teenager. I left to move to L.A. in my early 20's, the first thi g I did when I moved back from L.A. was get on I235, and just drove, because I hadn't been able to just drive without traffic jams. I now live in a suburb of Wichita. There's a lot about Kansas I can't stand. But, as I've gotten older, I appreciate a lot more about it. I had a studio apartment in Wichita when I was 19, for $350 a month, then I moved to L.A. and paid $1,200 a month for the same kind of studio apartment. Our 4 bedroom h[use costs us $550 in rent. You really can't beat that.

Some similarities to my life in Kansas. In fact it was almost idyllic. Lived in Wichita but we were on the edge of town so to speak. Had enough room to have three horses. We were backed up the the Little Arkansas River which provided all kinds of hunting, camping, horseback riding, swimming, rafting and exploring the tree groves. I grew up in the 60’s and we were pretty much free to roam anywhere we wanted. My summers we comprised of riding motorcycles down on the river banks, that and swimming in the family pool. Every kid in the neighborhood was welcomed on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There had to be at least twenty of us. Also in the summer months I would spend two weeks in grandpas cabin on Marion county lake. Swimming, sailing a little dingy and endless exploring. I wouldn’t trade my life back then for these kids lives today. To them it might be sports or playing a Nintendo Switch. Most of them don’t know a single soul on the same street they live on.

I can imagine this is representative of a "normal" childhood pretty far from my experience. It's very strange but I didn't even know how abnormal my childhood was until I was an adult for many years. Growing up in Chicago very very poor and then the suburbs but in a poor neighborhood, I experienced sexual abuse, constant bullying, fighting, financial struggles causing family arguments between parents and all before 6th grade. As a preteen and teen, more fighting and bullying, as the neighborhood got more populated, drugs became pervasive, I think this was when I started to smoke, and drink which became habitual at 12 or 13 along with smoking weed. As a teen I really became hooked on drugs, smoking weed everyday all day long as well as anything else I could get my hands on. Drug dealing, not only with other teens but with hardened adult criminals some of which were ex cons from prison who were in for some form of murder. I was involved in several high speed car chases, seen people get seriously hurt and hospitalized as well as myself with at least 3 trips to the trauma unit before I turned 18. I was on probation until age 18 for gun possession charges as I carried a handgun in high school and was eventually caught with it when I was in a rollover jeep crash that sent me to the head trauma unit Loyola in Chicago and my buddy shattered femur. I got kicked out of high school junior year and was sent to adult drug rehab at age 19 after I hit rock bottom. Afterwards I got completely sober, managed to quit smoking when I was 23, worked in just about every trade and eventually raised a family. I currently work 6 figure job and have two daughters with college degrees, divorced of course but successful nonetheless. My struggles never stopped however, been wiped out at least 3 times financially, crazy bad divorce, was robbed and had to buy back every tool I had and go into debt. So, couldn't be further from your upbringing but how different was the end results?

My parents didn't drive so we had to use public transport. My dad (May he rest in peace. He died from lung cancer in 2017 at the age of 69) worked long hours in a wool combing plant to provide for us all. My mum subsequently became a primary school teacher and is now living a comfortable and active retirement. My parents loved prog rock (Jethro Tull, The Moody Blues, Pink Floyd) but most of the music I listented to was the chart music of the day and Top of the Pops was on the TV every week (essential Thursday night viewing). In the UK a band knew they'd "made it" if they appeared on TOTP. I now live in a neighbouring town about 10 miles from where I was born and spent most of my life.

I also for the first few months of my marriage back in 1985 live with my dad‘s sister and her husband in Wichita for a couple months. Well I never been to Kansas seems interesting I have seen some UA-camrs that are from that area of witchita like Tanner braungardt and watch Jr go and hoovies garage. I live in new Mexico which is next to Arizona let me tell you if you came here you won't believe the amount of crime and murders we have here other dumb stuff that happens here but I guess here in new Mexico we got the green chili and red chili other different stuff. Sometimes yes its nice but idk I wanna explore other areas cause the things here to do don't seem like much some people are just rude whatever oh geez yeah.

Is it true it smells of cows everywhere you go in Kansas? I had a classmate with family there, she didn't like visiting because of that lol but that stereotype aside Kansas seem like a very friendly, close knit and down to earth type of place.

I was born and raised in Kansas but now the age of 63 I have to sell my house because the real estate taxes and the sales tax are one of the highest in America.. we have a corrupt governor Kelly who’s setting on $9 billion of excess money just trying to figure out how to spend it meanwhile she has vetoed three tax breaks

You can thank Sam Brownback for opening the door for Kelly to become governor. Both Dems and Republicans were disgusted with him and now you see what we got out of it.

@ he is way better than Kelly, schools were not closed under brownback, everything was funded, just wasn’t Setting on an extra eight - 9 billion in one little state

I'm born and raised in Wichita and it sucks all around. I lived in Austin Tx for 5 years and coming back to KS is such a shock.
Coming from a 2.5M+ metro area to basically a dud is shocking. All the stuff I saw there is a brand new thing here. Or its coming in a year or so. Top Golf has been a thing forever, and seeing people in Wichita freak out about it is crazy.
This city feels 10 years behind everything. Trends here are things that were popular years ago.

Camping: sleeping on rocks in the cold, hauling it in the freezing cold and the pitch black to the spider-filled wooden shack with soggy tp everywhere, squatting over a filthy and crusty hole that stinks of something unimaginable, and hoping to not get eaten by the nearby mommy cougar of a litter of cougar kittens.

Your property would be called a “ small holding” in the U.K. . Big enough to have a few animals but you need a day job to survive.

I was born in central Kansas in the mid 1950’s. I escaped when I was 21 and moved to another state. I hated Kansas. I saw so many instances of blatant discrimination. I found that generally the people are extremely clannish. They don’t like anything or anyone they deem as different. They want everyone to all dress alike and think alike. If you happen to express new and interesting ideas you are doomed. I still have a few relatives that live in Kansas but I refuse to go visit them. I will never ever step foot again in that horrid place. The best one word description for Kansas is “bleak”.

    • @Littlebigbot

Your outlook is "bleak" because you're a malcontent no matter where you live.
