The most important informative video I’ve seen! I cannot wait to do this at my church. Honestly all I do is offer my time for free right now, I want more people to be able to enjoy the live streams we do even more. This is going to help so much! Thank you!
Good video. I would like to see also another video on beginner church lighting. Had to do the basics like setting up the rigs and I had to actually hook up then why are all the lights together and what programs to use.
A good program is Onyx, it is used by ALOT of people. It is by Elation Lighting, and while you!re at Elation’s website, check out some of their fixtures! They’re really good.
This is an incredible walkthrough of church lighting! Doing a lot of research for a new system, and there's a ton of sources and info out there, but never is it packaged all together and talked about this comprehensively. Thanks so much for this
Keep working man!! May God continue to bless and protect you. Keep seeking him, and all you need he will always provide. Don’t just praise him for what he can do but for who he is!! Keep doing your thing, and always make sure that God finds pleasure in everything you do!!
Sweet, this is a really good video, what I always try to do when doing lighting for worship, is to ALWAYS keep in mine that I'm not doing worship lighting because true worship isn't a preset with dark colors and dim FOH meaning that it isn't something that can be manufactured! However, all those tools can be ABSOLUTELY used to WORSHIP, and also help guide people to focus on the Gospel of Jesus!! So I wanted to add some stuff, IF you're movers have a color wheel, you can get some very different looks, just by varying the intensity, especially if you have LED moving spots! Also that's a great thing to keep in mind! Also , I've tried to really pay even more attention to the screens because I think people in the congregation notice the words much more, and that's very important! So whatever the most dominant color is displayed I usually make that my backlight, then less prominent colors I will usually make my side light or top light! Also, it's also important to be mindful of front light intensity!
As a European, I find it fascinating how American churches look like music venues with amazing lights, rock bands and everything! :D Nothing like our churches. Anyway, good video!
Absolutely love this. New subscriber. My church is beginning to use more and more lighting in our worship services and I am excited to see the transition. This video really helped me understand in detail the importance of lighting. Keep up the great content, God bless.
Great video! I'd love to see another about lighting a bigger space. Our church has a large sanctuary, and we just started to use haze to add that atmosphere you talked about, but we're having a hard time hazing the room evenly. I'd love if there were some tips about how disperse haze, and any rules that might apply to getting the room to look consistent! Thanks, Jake!
Always use a fan, and try it in different spots around the stage/upstage where it isn’t super obtrusive. Give it a good amount of output for about 30 minutes with the fan helping it blow from the Hazer, and then lower the output to try to get a consistent haze look.
Who did Christ use on his tours? Was that Clair Global? I know they used Meyer Sound Leo’s and Robe lighting mostly. I think the set required like 60 semi trucks - it was totally lit man. I think Tiësto even made a surprise appearance. All I know is that better production = more souls saved. You know, just like it says in 2 Thomas 5:28.
Cool video man! Reminds me of the lighting rig at Church of The King. I’m on their production team and even though I’m not a lighting expert in any way, advice I would give to any beginner is to not over haze the room (I’ve had that happen to many times). And also experiment and try to find your own look. Glad we can all grow in God and production together!
Loved the video. I am learning / doing the lights for my church every Sunday (Unity of Boulder) and one of the ministers pointed me to your video. After getting somewhat proficient with the software and a working knowledge of how to manipulate the lights, I was ready for some good basic concepts. I have no lighting background and am loving learning a new skill, I get to be creative, and I get to be a part of the show! How cool is that! The concepts here were presented in an easy to grasp way and I am excited to put them to use! Our lighting is pretty good but very basic. We do not have lights along the back up high but only have arch lights on the sides. So back lighting is a bit tricky but can be done. Anyway, thank you so much for this great video. Maybe I will pay a visit down there and meet you all and see your system! God bless.
Hey Jake, great vid as always. You were going to do a run down of your lighting rig...did you ever get a chance to do that? Just starting out with lighting and that would be massively helpful.
Hey Jack, thanks a lot for this video. Can you just add some sentences on the vertical angle of the front lightning? We are about to rework our small lightning setup, because our speaker has strong, black eye rings due to front light hang very high. But I am not sure, if we hang the lights too low, the speaker could be strongly blinded, couldn't he?!
Hey Stefan, a good starting point is 45° from the light source to the subject on stage. You’re right though, the higher you go the more “raccoon eye” effect you will see on the subject. Especially if using cameras/broadcast. Too low and it will look “flat” and not much depth/shadows on the subject.
This is an amazing staring point for smaller churches like ours! Looming forward to implementing this to our new system! - God bless. PS: Anyone know that last video track?
what were those lights at the very bottom that only flash one a bright light because you didn't talk about them. you can see them resting on the stage at 4:45
Sorry to rain on your parade, but my church can't afford half of the number of fixtures that you guys have onstage, let alone a set of eight movers with gobo capabilities. We have no movers or gobos, but we do have some used RGB/RGBA LED DJ lighting, and some self-installed RGB/RGBW lighting strips. Our building presents challenges to the more traditional theatrical ideas of overhead trusses and a flat black back wall. I was hoping for something quite a bit simpler, and much more affordable. Do you have any advice at all for smaller churches with much shallower pockets?
Thanks John! It’s really up to the lighting designers discretion. If it’s a high energy event like youth hype songs. Then they could move a lot. But for most worship songs, I would recommend establishing a basic look with them fixed in one position most of the time but then maybe creating another look or two for climactic parts of the music.
Are you running HID movers or high power LED? Appears to be pretty high end stuff, like Martin, Elation, Blizzard or the like, not ADJ or Chauvet DJ. Assuming you run a true hazer.....that is oil/compressed air type. I like 'em because they're completely odorless. Nice rig ya got there. Like to see something on which controller software and how you sync cues to music. Thanks
LED Movers. Not super high end actually (comparatively). Mostly mid-range fixtures. Martin RUSH, Chauvet Rouge line of fixtures mostly. Usually wouldn't use these for "big" venues or arenas. Both companies have a good mid/price range line of fixtures. Ps, Blizzard is not high end. :) They will break quickly and you will spend more in the long run.
Quick question on Moving Heads, is it advisable to have them pan and tilt during the worship experience? I do that for fast songs, but in terms of slow songs, I find myself feeling so torn between them, I feel like the added movement adds a bit of dynamic to the entire experience especially when the song peaked, but at the same time, worried it distracts people.
Great question. Talk to your leadership and show them a few options. See what they prefer based on the song/congregation. Most mistakes I see in lighting is color choices and effects like you are describing. Keep it simple. As I like to say, just because the lights CAN move, doesn't mean they always SHOULD. :)
Do you have an video about using lightning for use of colors with worship specially for online recordings? I am light designer for Redemption Church Netherlands, and there is a lot to talk about the color saturation. Also depends on camera quality, but my video director always likes to keep the old-school 1kw hairlight corrected with L202 correction gels, and not to much saturation. And when I use white the video will look blue after edit. (#colorgrading)
Do you try to match the colors in the lyrics background slides or do you try to coordinate with different colors? And do you run your lighting from cues you program before service or do you set base cues then add/subtract fixtures to accent the feel of the song? Thanks!
Any chance you guys can list what light fixtures are used for your 3 spot lighting on main speaker? Can be exact or generic of what type of fixture they need to be. Thanks!
iamthird13 I think they are probably posted elsewhere on the comment section of this video but in case not, ETC Source 4 - 750w for front. Chauvet Ovation F95ww for backlight.
Anybody know where I can learn more about Haze? I’ve been trying to get a similar lighting effect like this but I’d like to know what’s the best liquid and Haze machine to get and how to set up so it last and doesn’t become to strong that it ends up looking like fog in the whole auditorium
Get a hold of a local production company who may have an Ultratec Radiance hazer and rent it for a week or so. Always use a fan to push the haze out to help fill the room. Keep it low and consistent. Hopefully you will see results.
I'd love to see your lighting setup. Our stage is a similar size to yours, and we are considering investing into a lighting rig (I used your toolkit to help me make a proposed budget!). Do you have any videos going through your Sunday morning light setup?
Amazing lighting. You're really helping a lot of small and big churches doing this videos. Do you mind sharing your light recommendation (cheap/best bang for the buck) so I can light a pastor or a worship leader with warm/skin tone light and not like a blueish/purpleish skin (something like Avatar). By the way, we need a portable setup because we only rent our space and we need to tear down everything every single Sunday. I'm just not familiar what light should I get for the Key light and backlight. Thank you so much.
Doesn't the backlighting, especially with haze, tend to wash out the projected video on the screen? I know the projector wasn't used in this video, and I love the lighting looks demonstrated. This guide for church lighting is the best, and I have come back to it repeatedly during my research. Just concerned about whether the backlighting, with or without haze, will effectively dim the what's shown on the screen.
Hey guys this is such an awesome set up and video! Question: How do you combine different brand of lights and talk to them individually but at the same time make them talk to each other. (At our church we use Chauvet with the Red wireless usbs. So if we were to get different brands of features, how would we get them to talk to each other? (I should also add, we use Luminaire as the main software) would appreciate your input so much!
@Juan, you can add tons of different brands of lights, as long as you address them separately and have the correct lighting profile on your software for that specific fixture, it shouldn’t matter. Lights shouldn’t “talk” to each other however, they should only be receiving signal from your console that is controlling them. If you’re lights are talking to each other currently then you have a different problem. :)
Jamming to pads in the car😁.. Our church stage is long over due for an updated stage, do you know of any place i can find a program or something to plan a stage???
Yes, I actually got an idea from them! My pastor has a few guys ready to build, I was hoping I could find a program that I can plan with and hand them a decent picture, something more than a hand scetch.. Also wanted to comment what you said about focusing on God in your video, I like to tell my team "we are telling God's story through song, as well as worshipping him individually."
There are a few options out there; one I used to use for free is Google Draw. Nothing fancy at all, but it's a little better than drawing on a napkin. :) Another one is Sketchup. I believe they have a free version you can try out that might be pretty cool. I use Capture, which is a a pre-viz software where I can draw up a design in my "space" or venue, hang lights in a 3D based room, and program onto that software via my lighting console software. Gets a little more tricky and pricy, but if you plan on doing bigger events, lots of lights/programming. Pre-viz software is a good way to go.
Video is a few years old, but mostly Chauvet Rouge R2X spots or RH1 Hybrids for spots, depending on campus. Martin RUSH MH6 wash. Elation Cuepix WW2 for crowd blinders. Recently added/changed(?) a to bunch of Chauvet Q40s to the broadcast rig. If you watch the online service, that should give you a good idea of the newest/updated looks.
I know the focus of this video was how to use the lighting in specific situations. However, I was wondering about what software they use to control the lighting and maybe what kind of lights they use.
ChromaQ by Jands lighting software (VISTA3). You can download full version from website, but once you want to use in live settings, need to purchase a dongle so it doesn’t blackout every few minutes. Fixtures: Mostly Chauvet Rouge R2X spots or RH1 Hybrids for spots, and Martin RUSH MH6 wash. Elation Cuepix WW2 for crowd blinders.
Hey Jake, how do you get your house lights in your church to be controlled by DMX? Ive been doing some research but I haven't found a straight forward answer anywhere really. Thanks for your help!
Hi Jake, Nice Video. I am fascinated about lights, my church is a church with small budget, please what kind of lights can i used as a beginner to light up the stage and going forward what program to use. Samson
Start with inexpensive DJ lighting fixtures - you can get enough to begin in a small church for a few hundred bucks. Get a few par lights for the back, and a couple moving spots for the front. Once the church gets used to them, expand your budget for more elaborate setups.
The ministry toolkit link takes me to a link (and payment requirement) specifically for church sound. I don't see anything about lights. Great video, but was hoping to get your info on the lighting.
I didn't search through the comments, but I'm curious what lights you're using for lighting up the speaker/pastor, and also for the back lighting? And finally what lights you're using for doing some color. We currently just have some color led lights shining down on us from the front (which isn't a good setup) wanting to step up our game
Hey Andrew. The key to lighting subjects is using ellipsoidals. We use the etc source four juniors at our church. Use those for front lighting and use led color washes for back lighting. I have a detailed gear list in the worship toolkit.
ETC Source 4 750w for Speaker Wash. 50 degree barrels. Backlighting we use Chauvet Ovation F-95WW LED. We have Martin RUSH MH6 Wash fixtures for more wash color.
So if you're bringing your own lighting and setting up somewhere unconventional that has no truss up front, what is the best way to front light a band? Assuming mounting 20 ft above them and 15 ft in front of them isn't an option?
Vertical lighting trees/stands/truss 45° off center out in front of the stage pointed at the worship team/pastor on stage. (Or whatever angle on the side of the stage would work before seating/viewing gets in the way)
Nice lighting system! Are the lights addressed individually or are they grouped together? If they are individual then how many universes are you running on? Do you have a built in dinner system or is it an after building system? Are your source fours on a catwalk or on a truss? If they are on a truss then how do you access it? Thank you in advance!
Hey man, good questions! Lights are all addressed individually, so I have full control of each fixture and can update positions and save presets if a single light isn’t exactly where I want it to go. Highly recommend doing this. I only use maybe a total of 3 Universes, with an open 4th when we bringing additional goods for special events/Christmas/Easter, etc. Source 4s are on a light pipe out above the audience, so when I need to access I have to move a bunch of chairs and either use a giant ladder or our scissor lift.
Good day and thank you for your video. It would have been a bit more beneficial if you included technical data such as light angles, proportion calculations, light temperatures etc. Thank you for everything else otherwise!
I know this is one of Jake's older videos, but does anyone know how much a lighting rig like this costs for a room about this size? Is this like a $20k job? We have lighting, but it's currently not back lit at all.
Currently, Jands Vista. We use a mix of Chauvet, Martin, and Elation lighting fixtures. Wattage varies, but they are usually posted on the manufactures website for each fixture.
How can you control the the “house lights” with DMX? The cans have been replace with LED but they still have old school dimmer switches, any easy way to DMX them and use the Luminaire app to set scenes?
I remember when this video dropped. I’ve come a long way since

You should call this : the ultimate guide to church lighting design for worship leaders who aren't lighting designers and dont ever plan to be
*Knowledge shortcut:* Church Lighting Design is basically identical to Nightclub Lighting Design!!!!

Good practical information that everyone can use everywhere. "Movers don't always have to move", but are there guidelines for when they are moving?

This guide for church lighting is the best, and I have come back to it repeatedly during my research. Not in our case, but it could for sure do that based on how strong your projector is. How far from the screen, ambient light, etc.
Is there anyway to know what types of lights they were using?
Just wondering why we need all the lighting and smoke?
Just for an emotional feel in worship. And it is haze not smoke. Smoke would probably be a little dangerous. 😂
Hi Jake, can I have the toolkits and rig of the lighting
As a light programmer at my church, I was hoping to hear more insight apart from “here’s what colors I can use”. Solid vid tho dude
Have you check out church stage design ideas.com?
What haze equipment do you guys use?
Do have any single light with three beams/Ray's?
is there a software that can p
air with dmx sunny 512 controller???
Do you have someplace where you list what kind of lights (brand and model) that they are using?
Video is a few years old, but mostly Chauvet Rouge R2X spots or RH1 Hybrids for spots, depending on campus. Martin RUSH MH6 wash. Elation Cuepix WW2 for crowd blinders.
Recently added/changed(?) a to bunch of Chauvet Q40s to the broadcast rig. If you watch the online service, that should give you a good idea of the newest/updated looks.
Beams are the bomb!
Wow, I love the content. Nice video and helpful information
I'd wanted to know about the lights
Which light can I use to fill the stage?
Hai sir, have a great day! can I ask something for you about for operating the lights using by the computer?
Love the picture of Mark in the bg at 22:06
Hahah!
I'm not Christan but I do appreciate some good lighting
What fixtures specifically is Mark using to backlight? We're looking to upgrade our fixtures soon.
Backlight the speaker? Chauvet Ovation F95 WW
Hi, we just started live streaming our services on Facebook. Do you recommend Tungsten or daylight for the main stage lights?
hmmm...That's a tough one. I would try both and see which one looks better!
@albertrosado Try somewhere in between. 4200K color temp may be a good start.
What software is he using on his Mac??
Hey great video, thank you so much! It is appreciated. Has anyone told you, you sort of look like the actor Aaron Paul?
The ministry toolkit link takes me to a link (and payment requirement) specifically for church sound. I don't see anything about lights. Great video, but was hoping to get your info on the lighting.
Can tell me. What's is the lights that you used?
(Or whatever angle on the side of the stage would work before seating/viewing gets in the way)
Starts around 5:36

@@marksmarketing Thanks!
@@marksmarketing What Software and what node are you using for the multi Universe support? Were using MAdot two on PC and want to switch to Mac.
@@EchoDrift-c3b We are currently using ChromaQ by Jands. Luminex DMX nodes (sACN) by stage for additional universes.
Hello i can see some lights on your stage floor behind the subject, what kind of light is that?
Thank you for this!
Which software are you using and can you tell me about the type and wattage of the lights you use?
Currently, Jands Vista. We use a mix of Chauvet, Martin, and Elation lighting fixtures. Wattage varies, but they are usually posted on the manufactures website for each fixture.
How can you control the the “house lights” with DMX? The cans have been replace with LED but they still have old school dimmer switches, any easy way to DMX them and use the Luminaire app to set scenes?
This could take some researching, but you may have to talk to an integrator to see if its possible.
