@@10animallover10 They did a special nighwish cruise for fans on the occasion of the release of their "Endless forms most beautiful" album. So it was a cruise just for nightwish fans. there are a number of interessting videos from that cruise including some unplugged versions of their songs.

This completely shocked me in concert. I was about fifteen feet from Marko, so I could easily tell that HE wasn't doing the growl . . . wait . . . WHAT ? ? ?

The drummer is Kai Hahto, second drummer of NW and good friend of first one Jukka Nevalainen, who had severe insomnia issues and had to stop drumming. Jukka is still involving at the business side of the band. Kai is also drummer of the band Wintersun, and a well recognized Pearl artist. To check his abilities, from Nightwish I recommend "Devil & the Deep Dark Ocean" @ Buenos Aires. From Wintersun I recommend "Sons of winter and stars".

Kai was Jukka's teacher, at least according to the internet. Kai is the best, not biased, he has been voted the best and I think so as well.

Happy birthday Sharlene! The small stage was on a cruise ship and if I've remembered correctly this was the first song of the set. Kai is the drummer, a good friend of Jukka the previous drummer. For another look at Kai's prowess you could try Weak Fantasy live at Tampere.

That song is so metal. So metal.
Unfortunately Jukka had to quit playing in 2014 because of chronic insomnia issue, while they were recording the 8th album Endless Forms Most Beautiful, so he asked his good friend Kai Hahto to replace him and finish the album and do the upcoming tour while he deals with his insomnia. Unfortunately he never came back, they waited till 2019 for him to make the final decision, which is when he announced he is not coming back and then Kai was finally made a permanent member. Jukka was amazing with his style and energy, will be missed forever, but we are more than lucky to get Kai as replacement cause he is amazing drummer and person, became Nightwish family immediately. He used to drum for Wintersun. Fortunately Jukka is now fine and is still with the band as manager and director of Nightwish company.
I am so glad Jukka is healthy but I will always miss our Pirate on the skins.

Like others have said, Kai is a beast on the drums. His performance in Wintersun - Sons of winter and stars - Live rehearsal @ Sonic Pump Studios is just nuts.
Kai is a very good drummer and has made the transition seamless. A good description of Jukka's style of drumming is he looked like he was a jockey. That forward leaning into it, was definitely a fun and enthusiastic look for a drummer.

I love how you are like a pair of open books when you watch music videos. One can tell almost immediately, what you're thinking and your joy and enthusiasm is contagious !! "Microphones were too soft", yeah, i don't understand why some people keep recommending this cruise version. The Wembley or Tampere version of this song is much better.

All versions are good. Some people like other things. (Personally I do prefer this cruise version.)
I really like the sound on the cruise version. The issue is Floor is growling in the background, and that's how the song was made, but in this version the camera has no closeups of Floor while she's growling.

As others have mentioned, this was recorded at a rather special concert on a cruise ship, so the acoustics were probably very challenging. (Think: giant tin can).

I've never been to a Nightwish concert (I wish) but in 2013 I went to a Megadeth concert here in Buenos Aires, it was Dave Mustrayne's birthday so we all blow up a balloons before entering to the stadium haha

As someone told, comparing the 2 drummers, Jukka was fighting the drums, pure passion. Kai drums like a machine with perfection.
Both of them are outstanding.
When it comes to pure metal riffs, this is my favorite from Nightwish.

I'd love to see you get into Delain, a symphonic metal band from the Netherlands. "Sing to Me" and "The Gathering" are great songs which both also feature Marko as a guest. "Ghost House Heart" is a great ballad. To mention only a few.

Happy birthday Sharlene from the Chicago Brigade of the Nightwish Army. I have played drums for almost 60 years. Jukka was great; flashy and he hit hard. Kai is a master technician but not as flashy. As others have said, take a look at Wintersun "Sons of Winter and Stars." Kai was unbelievable.

The last live concert Nightwish released, was recorded in 2018 at Buenos Aires and came out December 6 2019. You should listen to a song or 2 from that concert. The band didn't hold back on this CONCERT like (DEVIL AND THE DEEP DARK OCEAN )AND ( ELVENJIG / ELVANPATH) These 2 songs will blow you away.

I don't comment often but I think you are right about the mix, can be better.. The style of Kai is different than Jukka's style, he avoid all unnecessary movements that are not linked with a beat and if you watch Wintersun - Sons of Winter and Stars you will understand it. And every drummer has his own style and behavior you know it..

secondly: i highly recommend devil and the deep dark ocean live in buenos aires to see kai go HAM on the drums with nightwish. everyone else goes nuts on their respective instruments as well so i highly recommend for more than just drumming.

You guys should also check out (not as a reaction) the Wembley version, which sounds better overall, this is recorded in a ship after all. There's also one in Tampere, both that and Wembley were the 2 full concerts featured in the DVD, this Cruise clip was merely a bonus track.
