HAVE A GOOD DAY! 🌺
Just stumbled upon your web site. I live about 1.25 miles from where Reagan built the governor's mansion (that Jerry Brown sold and never used) in Carmichael. I was not aware that it was possible to grow these in z9b. Where do you acquire your plants from? I'd have to do some serious modifications to our soil, or grow in raised beds.
Very helpful. Thank you. Just llanted one in my yard windward Hawaii at about 1500’ elevation
Should do great there!
They look great there Jeff, its tricky to keep them healthy here but your tips will help
thanks
I love both ... We do have plenty here in Mauritius
Excellent!🌴😎🌴
Hi Jeff, Can you tell me what type of plants the palm looking trees are?
Beccariophenix Alfredii
Hi Jeff, what longan and lychee’s varieties do you grow? And how big are the seeds?
A friend of mine gave me a few bunches of longan she grew in Fullerton. They were superb in terms of flavor and sweetness and the seeds were pretty small. Even the green ones not totally developed were sweet, fleshy, and flavorful
I grow Mauritius lychee and kohala longan
Very nice!
Have you tried rambutan (hairy lychee)?
We live in Napa, zone 9b-ish and we love rambutan.
Curious if it would survive here.
It too tender for cali
@@TropicalGardenGuy thanks!
I was hoping we might be able to grow rambutan since I saw you growing lychee.
We also like cherimoya. Have you grown that?
I really want both in my yard but afraid to really jump in. Where did you get yours? Just live vicariously for now. Sticking to my Avocados.
I got mine from friends in trades.
Hi sir can i ask?what flower inducer brand name for logan and what month u do start to induce longan tree? Your advice will be highly appreciated
-peter sia from philippine we a tropical climatic season
I just use Hollytone
Nice, I subbed 👍
Thanks for the sub!
My longan is in clay loam, not doing good. Thanks for the water ph tip.
Good luck Red, use a lot of compost on top of the soil!
@@TropicalGardenGuy he's really yellow and growing poorly. I just put some sulphur on the soil, watered with iron chelate and mulched with coir. I feel like a doctor. Lol
Hey Jeff, is there any variation of Monstera plant we can grow in z9b? I've always thought they look extremely tropical. Even looking around in Southern California, I don't remember seeing any even in their zone 11s.
Yes, but to be safe, plant them below some sort of canopy
How did you change California clay soil to sandy loam? Also your Mauritius lychee really grows faster! I heard usually lychee grows slow
Hi Ryan, Where I live its mostly sandy Loam.
Since both longan and lychee ph should be under 6.5, if my ph is 8 should I use soil acidic to add to soil to bring down the ph?
I use sulphur
@@TropicalGardenGuy I can’t find it on Amazon
Do you have the lychee next to the house ? How much sunlight are they getting ?
Lychee gets sunlight about 8 to 10 hours a day
@@TropicalGardenGuy What about the longan ?
The top 8 ft is in full sun all day
@@TropicalGardenGuy Got it. I have a shady spot with filtered sun in the morning and afternoon couple of hours sun and been desperately looking for fruit trees that would grow in that area. Any thoughts ?
Just that most trees need lots of sun to produce an abundance of fruit.
Hi Jeff, I want to grow mangos like nam doc Mai,I am in San Jose . Do you think it will survive in San Jose. Thanks
Will survive down to 28. Can be planted only in Sandy loam.
I think it all depends on what your lowest winter temp is. Planting location is also important as you’ll want to plant it in the most protected spot in your yard.
I have seen a fruiting 12ft mango tree in Milpitas -- the owner was kind enough to offer me a mango from that tree -- not sure what the variety was, but it was not shaped like NDM.
It is my first year growing mango trees in San Jose in containers and I have Glenn, Carrie, Rosigold, Dasheri, NDM #4 and Sia Tong. I have them in a greenhouse with heater -- heater activated for 10 min on the hour during night time -- if it gets too cold, then activated for 10 min every half hour -- I check weather forecast and set that schedule accordingly for my Kasa smart plug via app.
Did you say longan and lychee both don’t like high nitrogen?
Yea in my garden they like acidic soil
Hi Jeff, I live in Southern California. I bought a grafted lychee tree 5 years ago. But the growth is getting no where. Any tips you can give me is greatly appreciated
Hard to say with actually seeing the tree and its growing conditions.
Usually if they dont take off right away, they sulk and never take off.
I had one that did this in a container many years ago. I took it out of the container rinsed off the roots and repotted it in a new container. After that it took off. They usually dont do good for long in a container though
Use NPK 20-05-20. Lychees like full sun.
Hi sir, can I grow a Logan tree in San Jose, CA? Have a great day!
Sure, why not
How long does it take for longan to start fruiting if you plant from seed?
Probably 10 to 15 years and the fruit quality may not be good.
Better to buy a air layer plant
@@TropicalGardenGuy how about a grafted plant sir? is air layered the best?
What do you do with all the fruits you grow?
We eat most and give away the rest ! Nice thing about Longan is that it ripens over a month.
What part of the valley are you?
Modesto in the Central Valley
What is the difference between zone 9b and 9a ? I live in Monterey California 93940 can we grow longan and lychee here
USDA z9a sees lowest temps, on average winter down to 20f. USDA z9b sees a lowest yearly temp of 25f. I’m guessing that Monterey is USDA z10a, which sees a lowest temp of about 30f
@@TropicalGardenGuy hi Jeff my summer her the temperature about 60,65 f all summer so can longan grow here or not
worth a try
Hi Jeff, Can i grow lychee and longan in Oakland, CA? If yes where can i buy these trees?
Oakland weather should be able to provide enough heat. Mimosa nursery in SoCal has both.
If you are willing to buy online, they are available at 'everglades farm'
Holy 💩you're local. I might Do a drive by and get a stash off your fruit tree😮🤭
Lol
If I were ur neighbor, I don't think u would have any fruit on ur trees. you would probably think it's some animal Getting into your fruit. I'm an American but other continents fruits/veggies/ spices r my favorite 🤤🤪
Please help me my longan have flowers but they all dryers and no food
Hmmm, Not sure of your conditions.
