IMO the game should have a planner UI in the game before you even attempt to make the zoo, You should draw roads there, exhibits, public facilites, everything. Just a top down view of the area where you can pick and choose how you want your zoo to look. After you confirm it roads should automatically appear and maybe invisible exhibit walls and also "foundations" for various buildings. This would be much easier, right now 90% of players just make up the layout on the go, for me personally it is very difficult to plan ahead, i just dont have the imagination to do it all.
It's a good idea but maybe takes some of the freedom out of the game. It would be a hell of a tool to try and implement to but might be an interesting things to see a game tackle at some point.
This is what i use my sandbox for, I build and save blueprints, then put things together kinda like a puzzle in the other game modes (excluding campaign)
I was surprised when looking at the comments how many people were saying this wasn't helpful. It was EXACTLY what I was looking for. I don't have trouble building things but I often do as you commented by starting with some great plans, building along kind of free form, then looking at all the space left, throwing several new habitats in then deciding to start over because I was no longer making something fluid and beautiful. Just to repeat the process again.
Thank you.
Using the paint tool to get a rough idea of my lay out had to be most simple yet useful thing in the world. Never thought of doing that
Right? I came here for Jurassic World Evolution ideas, did not dissapoint!
Thank you for this video! Honestly, thinking about what you want in a zoo is one thing, but having a planned layout is an entire issue of its own! Thank you for the guide, hopefully it helps me with my own zoo projects!
I know what you mean, it honestly is the hardest part of any project for me so I really hope my tips can help a little.

u are incredible . i keep building zoos and then giving up after putting one animal and starting a new one with each sitting . realized its bc im not forward planning. damn,. thanks for the tips
Thank you! Glad this could be of some help. I actually plan a good few habs or buildings in advance and it just keeps me that little more motivated to keep going :)
Me too! I only just got the game though, have wanted it for years haha
Thanks SO Much. I was struggling so much with this. I'm fairly creative, but never know where to start.
You’re more than welcome. I used to be exactly the same, but having a few steps to follow never hurt eh :)
This is very useful for someone brand new to sandbox and the fact im apart of zsu and as my zoo expands my enterance will grow in size
There is some good information in this video but it took a bit to get to the content. I really liked the idea of using the terrain painting to do preliminary planning! The first 7 minutes should be condensed as a lot of it will not be useful for most players. Keep up the good work!
Oh my gosh, ur a lifesaver!! With almost any zoo I start building I just cannot finish it because I don’t like the entrance and layout. Thanks, I really needed this!
Glad I could be of some help :)
Damn I love that city layout🥰 Thanks for the tips!
well. you had me super interested. i opened my game as i began to watch this (for the first time in months) got to your little city that you made...feeling super inspired. got to your entrance and now im overwhelmed :') lol youre amazing! great looking zoo
Haha isn't that always the way. I will be putting out some more of these vids, hopefully they'll help you conquer that. Thank you btw, it's coming along nicely
I NEEDED THIS! thankyou dan.
Glad it could be of some help
I really wished you would show some close up on the stuff you said on the video. Like show a montage of making it etc.
Thank you!! I needed this :D
More than welcome, hope it helps :)
5:23 that city is looking amazing man!
Love this. Thanks
The most helpful video I have been able to find since buying the game a few months ago. Thanks so much!
Glad it helped and hope you're enjoying the game :)
wow, thanks a lot for the tips....this projects are really awesome !
You're more than welcome :)
Really helpful thanks my guy 👍
Glad it could help
Following your tip, I looked at a couple of hundred zoo maps on google images, and I have come away with 3 ... shall we say, insights?
1. This surprised me a little bit, but 95+% of them contained no straight lines. Paths are curvy and wavy and bendy. Not a straight line in sight.
2. Most zoo maps are very hard to read. And some don't contain a lot of information about what all the facilities are. And,
3. I didn't really like any of them (as the basis of a layout for my own zoo, that is). 😀
Not everything will work for everyone I guess haha. Google maps is imo a better way to look at zoos now, this video is a little old and I tend to find jumping in and walking around zoos much more inspiring :)
Thank you so much! The most useful tip you've given here is ´planning forward´: I will force myself to sit still for a moment and think of where I want the park to grow to. I enjoy zooming across the map working on different things at the same time but without direction it's very hard to focus towards any coherent project.
One question I have is how often you use tools outside PZ to plan your projects: do you draw quick sketches on painting programs, have lists drawn up what facilities you want to include, descriptions of ideas you have in your head, going as far as saying ¨these are the in-game pieces I want to use¨
Thats a good question actually and something I should have included to be fair.
I do use photoshop a fair amount, I'll draw over the top of screen shots and things like that. I keep lots of lists for each of my projects but its more about which photos to refer to for reference and things like that. The pieces I use are all in my favourites 9 time out of 10 and so don't really think about them too often but making sure you favourite all the items you use the most is a super helpful tool because it'll save you so much time scrolling through all of the pieces the game has to offer.
@@DanXG Of course, using screenshots to draw on top of them! That's such an obvious idea.
And yeah, in the end only a handful of references will be closest to what you want to build. And as you learn about including details, they will come as part of the progress and you don't need specific references anymore
@@NewAge374 Exactly, some stuff honestly becomes second nature once you've built enough in the game
Are you planning to play Franchise zoo? I am not good in building stuffs but have a lot of ideas how to build a zoo, I like playing Franchise mod a lot.
@@jwsakata No it's not for me, not enough creative freedom early on so I just stick to Sandbox.
I can not thank you enough for the city layout map. I want to love this game , but as someone who gets overwhelmed easily I sometimes Just don't know what to do. and as someone who has been playing Zoo Tycoon 1 and 2 since they released ,I am really use to having and seeing a wall or city around my zoo and it helps me visualized how I am going to layout my zoo better. so again I can't thank you enough for it, and Kinda hope maybe the PZ team will add some City based maps in the future .
You're more than welcome, it's always nice to hear it coming in handy. I felt exactly the same which is one of the reasons I wanted to tackle the project in the first place :)
Awesome video! Thank you for this.
Glad you enjoyed it, hope it was of some use
@@DanXG it really was. I am watching some of your other videos in this series now. I really want to be able to make awesome stuff like this in game. But its like my mind goes blank eberytime I open up a new map in sandbox.
@@ozzeroz8512 This is exactly why I started doing these videos as I know that feeling all too well. I still get it sometimes today, it's just one of those very intimidating games at times.
@@DanXG yea thats a great way to put it. Thanks again!! Truly awesome stuff! Also just discovered your let's build a zoo together Playlist. Really looking forward to it.
Thanks, I don’t have planet zoo, (don’t have a laptop lol) but this is also very helpful for other games.
Or pc
Chester Zoo is such an awesome zoo, if you are in the area (Chesire) you should definitely check it out.
It's on my list of zoo's to visit. It looks amazing!
idk how to phrase this but how do you get your paths to be so curvy but connected? Lovely video btw
Oh my gosh your video gave me a crap ton of inspiration the google maps one helped a lot! Thanks!
now time to wait for the conservation pack and make a conservation zoo!
Glad you liked it :)
Amazing gave me so many ideas ! Could I ask what your graphic settings are in game? the glare from the sun seems to always make my grass less greener everything abit dull if you get me always try change graphics to try get it as bright like yours
Glad I could be of some help :). I have my graphics set as high as I can, only because my PC allows me too. You can mess around with the brightness apparently but I've never done this myself.
how do you fill in large plazas without the grid tool? It always just has weird holes in it for me whenever I try to bend the large area
Use smaller non grid pieces. The plaster and mud pieces make for great alternate flooring and with the different array of sizes make it alot easier to cover smaller parts, and even create nice smooth corners and curves etc :). Hope that helps.
@@DanXG What non grid pieces ? Can you recommend a specific one for example or provide a video about that topic? Great video btw. Keep up the good work
@@DerHouy as I mentioned in the original comment the non grid plaster pieces are the best as they come in a bunch of different sizes 👍🏻
What a perfect time I have just got my approval document for zoo establishment
How do I use maps or layouts by other players? I'm not sure what the workshop is, I'm very new even though I wanted the game for a long long time hahah
I would need to look for you but I believe they appear as a saved file rather than a blueprint
So nice. 😅💋
Sadly not what I was looking for. But still a good video.
what were you looking for? did you find it?
Dan , I need help mate , I've sorted my entrance out and I will later add custom banners and 'Tropical Wings' is such an inspiration but idk where to go now , I just end up deleting it all and doing it again and again. I have 100 hours on this game and not 1 zoo
You just need to take the leap and get the first animal in. Try to follow some of the steps in this video, look at pictures online and even zoos on maps etc to see how they are planned out. Once you take the leap of faith it'll all fall into place trust me
@@DanXG Thanks lad 👌
hey my friend, if you’re starting your first franchise zoo on hard, i’d recommend medium, and then moving on to hard once you’ve built your first zoo and have that experience. There’s such a steep learning curve that it’s very hard to keep up with everything on hard, if you aren’t comfortable with camera movement, building, animals etc.
Watch a video on a good starting layout, start with one animal (gharial worked perfect for me, had 80k in the bank by the time i was fully finished with their habitats, and then after that first animal everything should be smooth sailing. Don’t be afraid to use steam workshop buildings or prefabs either. You don’t have to build every single building by yourself, that’s why people quit after building 1/8th of a zoo. Good luck and Good welfare to your new zoo🙌🏻
@@tooshiesty4066 Sandbox! I build for realism just lack ideas as of now
Are there bridges to get to the area on the other side of the road?
I've gone with tunnels :)
Is this based on tropical wings zoo, Chelmsford?
Only the name was :)
i'm literally the least creative person in the world (99.99% of my stuff are downloaded from the workshop) but this video gave me inspiration and courage to try to build my own zoo!
Lovely to hear it helped :)
Watching this for my Minecraft
you keep referencing other videos and it’s my first time on your channel and i can’t figure out where these other videos are. specifically the entrance video? maybe i’m just dumb but i’m having a hard time telling which video that is
I usually link the videos in the right hand corner. If you go on my channels home page, click play lists and you'll see all the videos in this series and that should help :)
can the layout around the zoo come to the workshop
The city layout is already on the workshop, the link should be in the description :)
@@DanXG Tahnks but i cant load it
@@GloryManUnited_ Not sure why, it definitely works with no trouble, loads of people have used it :)
@@DanXG When i subscribe the blueprint it doesnt show up in game
@@GloryManUnited_ It wont be a blue print I believe it's found as a saved file
CAI I HAVE YOUR ZOO ITS SO HARD TO MAKE ONE THAT WILL LOOKS LIKE THAT
It'll be on the workshop when it's finished :)
Thank You For This Video.. But I have a question You Create a many Building In your Zoo. What Is the function of This Building?
I will Create A zoo For College project. And I dont have any idea.. and i thougt for a 3D model what i create ? just create a landscape or Some building ? Please who has the idea Answer me.
The building in this video functions as the entrance and gift shop, thought that was pretty self explanatory but that's not really the purpose of this video.
I've watched a few of your videos and maybe I just haven't found the right ones, but these are not helpful at all. You do all the hard stuff off camera - that is the actual building part that people have a hard time about. We all know how to think, but the doing is really hard on planet zoo with the game mechanics.
People learn differently, many have found these videos to be super helpful. Many of my builds can take days at a time because of their level of detail and that's almost impossible to break down into videos of this length, it's why I don't do speed builds on the channel. I am going to be starting a tutorial series soon that showcases the building aspect more, which could be catered to what you're looking for more. Maybe give this series a miss but stay tuned and see if the new series helps more, I appreciate the comment and feedback.
As soon as I saw that you had built a city I knew that this wouldn't be useful to me. This is just not the kind of video I'm looking for when looking for zoo layout videos, this is more like faffing about than just making a working zoo that's easy to expand.
I was literally using my current project to explain a point 😂, you could have just passed on by instead of being just another wanker in the comments just so you know. Don’t like it don’t watch it’s very easy 👍
@@DanXG Isn't the comment section used to say if you've enjoyed a video or not? He's ''literally'' not being a wanker, he said it very politely and used no insult, how bout that
@@littlekidworld it’s a comment that doesn’t even need to be made, how about that. Don’t like it just move on and go find something you do, thats generally how I navigate UA-cam
@@DanXG But you haven't done that when you saw his comment, instead you called him a wanker.. ?
@@littlekidworld bit different considering this is my video, why you so caught up on the word wanker and my reply? Just move along it’s so boring dealing with this shit at times! Look at the first line of his comment ‘I knew this wouldnt be for me’, if that’s the case why watch and why comment, that was my point I just added in that I think they’re a bit of a wanker for commenting when it’s easier to keep stum. Make sense now?
5:20 minutes of nothing LoL
Here I am trying to help people and there’s always that one wanker in the comments that wants to moan. I emplore you to go and do it better 👍🏻
@@DanXG Well said 😂
Dont waste your time building that big zoos. One u add animals and guests the game will become unplayable and laggy. Thats a shame cause that build is very very nice looking..
Maybe give up commenting. As I've said to you in the passed it all depends on how good your PC is, but you didn't want to listen. I don't have any issues with lag and this project works just fine. Just give up on the Planet Zoo slander already
@@DanXG When i see a zoo from u with 8000 guests and 20 animals where u can show that u have more than 20 fps i will stop commenting. but that will never happend.
@@mattoz8439 I have over 20 animals already in this very zoo. I've run this with over 3k guests walking about and it's fine. You just have some weird agenda against the game because you seem to have a potato for a computer. Just give it up or I'll just block you because it's becoming really boring. I'm here making content to try and help people and instead I'm dealing with your bloody whinging again!
@@DanXG Ok sorry. Didn´t mean to be a idiot. Just think the game is very porly optimized. Can i ask what computer specs u playing at maby i need to buy a better one..
@@mattoz8439 I have 8000+ guests and 180+ animals and my game runs fine
This video is SOO helpful thank you!! Lots of great tips!
