dont know if it is a 1:1 replacement but in germany we have something called Forex. It takes indentations pretty well but not very deep (maybe 0.5 mm) and cuts and files pretty good
It's interesting when you talk about spending 20 to 40 hours on this piece and having to take reference photos of yourself in the same outfit, you're basically just describing the process of that a traditional painter would use for a finished piece. You may not have hit all of you goals (isn't that how it bees usually) but I think you accomplished a lot of what you were going for. Looks dope to me, would love to see more of these display pieces.
Scott, this probably my favorite videos of yours. Ever. From the process, the editing, the attitude, and the fun experimental approach, it's all solid gold. Aaaaand now I want pizza.
Listen Scott, this whole project was awesome to watch, but that pizza... that is an amazing paint job there, I was so curious how you were going to make that mess look like anything and you totally nailed it. Such a cool model and and paint job.
Awesome content, I appreciate you distancing from warhammer in general and branching out into new ideas and discussions, videos like these are awesome, keep doing what you're doing.
100% agreed that sometimes we forget to enjoy the journey. So glad you mentioned that. I have been pushing myself to try new things and break out some of the Primarchs that I haven't tackled for fear of not doing them justice.
Pizza effect is perfect - takes me back to that time I was delivering a pizza and stumbled outside someone’s door - I caught it, and everything was still on top, just all slid to one side leaving a bare crust on half
Fam, your channel is always giving me life, but it’s been in a major glow up lately. This vid ate and left no crumbs and your rizz really came through. That paint job slays, especially on the ‘za. Overall, a dangerously based video fr fr no cap, on god.
Bro this is literally one of the best videos you’ve done! I learned so much. Your technical skill is uncanny lmao ya get it comic pun lol 😂. No seriously I love your work. Thanks for all your effort. It really shows in the quality of your production and especially your painting.
Some of the best comic book style miniature paint jobs I have ever seen were done by BigChild Creatives for the CMON Marvel United Kickstarter campaigns. They did absolutely amazing work for those three campaigns, and the lower detail chibi miniatures are perfect for that style.
esgetit Awesome work on the figure by the way. I really loved the comic style you were able to execute. And to echo your sentiment, I've also been trying to remind myself to focus on the joy of what it is I love doing. I've spent these past years drowning myself in the negativity of feeling less than perfect, and always feeling like I'm failing for not attaining what it is I want to see out of my painting. Paint because you love to, just because 1 figure or 1 thing you might have tried didn't turn out to be perfect, that doesn't mean that it has the be the last time you ever try. Just remember to enjoy it. Thanks, Scott.
This turned out great, only "criticism" would be that the chat bubble needed a black outline to tie it all in with the style. But that's super minor and this bust turned out amazing. Great work bud!
Holy this vid is extremely informative. "Highlight distribution" is literally my whole style when doing digital illustrations. I learned so much from this video, for painting minis and illustrating and now I discovered there's a term for the coloring style I use, thanks miniac, very pog.
I love this illustrators approach! I think it's really important to find joy in all the processes of art making too. taking reference photos, finding the right lighting, getting a fold just right in a hoodie can all be an absolute blast. I have illustration friends who love to post all their silly self shot reference, weird faces. There's no reason it has to feel like extra work if you can change your mindset a bit and think of it as part of the fun! thank you for all that you do.
I really love these types of videos of yours. Getting behind the philosophy of our own fears and self imposed limitations of the hobby. You personally have motivated me so much to get into mini painting.
That pizza looks amazing, very "gamer" and "epic swag" as the kids say these days. I hit the griddy fo shizzle when I saw the finished model, definitely a #1 Victory Royale, fr fr
Comic book style is my favorite style of painting, both for my models because of the time gained not blending, and on other's models because it just look so great
Scott, loved this video. I think you really nailed one of the most important aspects of mini painting, that many of us forget. We do it, because we love it. Its so easy to get caught up in competition painting, and commission painting, and getting the amount of views and likes and (well even more so when its your business), but its absolutely worth the time just to paint a miniature sometimes and enjoy the process.
Bada Boom Bada Ba !!! This is one of my favorites yet from start to end. You have actually lit up my creativity spark and now I need to do this mini and put my own spin on it. I may not get the 20% off but heck you did an awesome job on this mini, keep up the great work !
This is my favourite mini painting video this year! Great script, editing and pace. It's got it all: fun models, bits of reference, trying new things! Goated and basecoated, no cap!
Looks great dude, the stylised approach is so much more intersting to look at and pairs really well with the style of the sculpt. Mike Mignola is a comic artist that has had a big impact on me (in terms of drawing). I love how dynamic his use of light and dark is, it pushed me to be more experimental in how I approached adding flat black shadows and it really suprised me how much of a drawing can be hidden in shadow yet still appear be interseting and detailed, especially when the lighting effect is done right and the small elements of releif from the black imply shape through the lighting. The way it changes the mood and allows for the art to not be a distraction from the story by simplifying it to a level where what is needed is conveyed without adding superfluous detail is bordeline scientific in it's delivery . I guess that can be applied to mini painting, we are basically telling a story with each paint job and the style in which it's painted is part of that story, it can affect the interation and change the context and impact of a piece dramatically.
One thing to help sell shading is cross hatching, lines of black spaced or close together to shade rather than just dark areas. You can then add perpendicular lines to deepen the tone even more. Can do this over cell shading or just one tone. 80s comics and older are really good examples of this. Awesome attempt and way to just go for it.
This paint job looks amazing!!!! I Love watching how you grow with your painting and hearing how you think about the painting and the process you use to choose how you want to go about your painting, Keep up the amazing work!!!
Wow! You do so much research and prep work! I… just go for it. 😂 I really appreciate all your techniques, I learned a lot from this video! 😊 thank you!
Yo Scott, wanted to pay you a compliment. In the past I've found that in some of your videos you seem to have a bit of a stifled unnatural speech pattern, despite the content always being very solid. In this video you came across much more naturally, calm, and you seemed a lot more inspired as well. I think this is your best video to date! (I've seen a lot but not all of your catalogue) You've outdone yourself and I'm looking forward to more of this style!
@Miniac Thank you for reminding me that the fun is in the journey and not the results. I have a lot of models that I haven't painted because I'm afraid of screwing them up. Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!
Stellar as ever, Scott. One quick suggestion - a black outline on your speech bubble will comic-book is more thoroughly. Right now it looks a tiny bit of an afterthought.
Pizza looked great and I love the message. I saw a video a while back that showed how darker complexions actually reflect back Caucasian looking tones in the highlights. I hope that information helps you continue to grow!
hey scott, i can't tell you how much I enjoy your content! I love how you show your whole process and evaluate what was worth it and what was maybe too much. along the way there are so much tips and tricks I learn from every video! the editing and videography is top notch. the picture in picture shots for example are not for flexing editing skills but they are adding so tons of value. I also love how you give your honest opinion on stuff and not fall back to well-meant platitudes that doesn't offend anyone. besides that i think you are hilarious without trying hard like some other content creators in this genre! thanks for great content! I am very glad you are doing well! can't wait for next video!
I think the vinyl cutter would be safe from this, but avoid using heat or laser based cutters on sintra/expanded foamboard as its PVC and puts off toxic vapors when burned! Amazing style on display here Scott
Thank you miniac for this video. I am watching all your videos, keep them funny and informative as always. I believe the next youtube trend will be the different painting styles that exist. I suggested something similar to paintingjourney but I had no answer. Since you are the GURU of youtube painting channels it would be awesome to make a playlist with all the different painting styles for miniatures (comic, anime, grimdark etc.) and please let us know what is your favourite painting style and why? Again you are an awesome guy and your videos are among the best for miniature painting. I really cannot thank you enough for all these years (7+ I think that I am watching your channel).
Great video! This style of commentary that you employ really lines up with how I think while painting. The way you explained comic book “efficiency” gave me inspiration to try things differently. Have a good day!
Amazing video! Great technical content broken down in an approachable way with humor and originality. I love seeing you firing on all cylinders like this.
I love love love that hoody the colors pop so fricken great, cel shaded/ comicbook style is my favorite im just crap at the black lining part i feel like i go a little over board with it maybe Still awesome video muh dude
I really love your painting style and minis that you paint unnn John got me back into minipainting thanks so much cheap putting out of the great content
As always, the result is amazing and I loved the departure from your usual for this. I’m curious if it would have added more comic “realism” if you freehanded some graffiti on the wall?
I might be late on this but im seriously considering taking the dive into a display bust to get away from army painting. and allow what i feel will be more of an artistic experience without the pressure of keeping in theme with an army.
That's very cool Scott. Very cool. I'm hoping to get a Spider-Man diorama printed soon so I'll definitely try the comic book style for that. You take reference photos? Oh. I just use Google. Haha. Thanks for the cool plinth.
Is the material you can't remember the name of...Sintra?
Oooh....this sounds right!
dont know if it is a 1:1 replacement but in germany we have something called Forex. It takes indentations pretty well but not very deep (maybe 0.5 mm) and cuts and files pretty good
Sintra is the brand, the material is foamed PVC.
@@benwood3641 Yeah, I think the term is "expanded PVC"
I was thinking foam board, but that may be more paper with foam in between.
Nice one Scott 🤘 That looks like a fun technique...
DUNCANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for commenting! It was a fun technique 🥰
I just realized that you have basically become the miniature version of good eats. And I am all here for it.
I'm for it as well! haha
No unitaskers.
even looks like Alton Brown

Maybe your best video yet. Experimental, explained your thoughts process and techniques and no GW.
An all around excellent video.

Wow, the model looks great! The orange jacket looks so smooth and talking about the pizza made me hungry
The delivery of "is this mini painting?" caught me off-guard, that was on point
Fam, your channel is always giving me life, but it’s been in a major glow up lately. This vid ate and left no crumbs and your rizz really came through. That paint job slays, especially on the ‘za. Overall, a dangerously based video fr fr no cap, on god.
I take Ws only, fam
So many vids so fast, and with such high production value! Really levelling up the channel these days - so stoked for you!
I’m new to mini painting and I’ve seen a few content creators on here and just now finding your channel I’m liking what I’m seeing.

also, you may already know about it but james gurney's book "color and light" is an absolute must for any deeper color theory exploration
I needed the part about the process, way to bound up in the imagined result, gets me every time ❤

Awesome paint job :) You brought me into mini painting 4 years ago and im at least as old as you. Continue the good work and greeting from Germany
Scott - this is one my favorite videos you've made in a while. You seem super happy and enthusiastic and that was wonderful to see!

@@Miniac we gotta do a tradsies. lol
Damn Scott. You nailed this video. Such a great mix of commentary and artsyness. Win.
I do love the end result on this one. Fantastic piece good sir. Also almost 5k likes...
You know what can can make this cool paint job insanely cool? image of this guy as phone camera sees him freehanded on phone screen 🤩
Scott I really liked the greasy cardboard effect you painted! That looks awesome!

Glad to see Saga there, new issue today! Hyped
This video is the kick in the pants i needed to get serious about trying object source lighting. As always, your videos inspire. Thanks man.
The editing, sound, and content of this video are amazing, been cool to see this channel grow! Thanks
@Miniac Thank you for reminding me that the fun is in the journey and not the results. I have a lot of models that I haven't painted because I'm afraid of screwing them up. Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!
Display minis are my favorite videos of yours by a country mile. Fun video!
It is pleasure to watch!
Mindworks games are so amazing - I recently painted Hare of the moon and it was such a beautiful sculpt

This looks so fantastic!! And the backdrop takes it to 11!!
Well thank You for this technique idea and explanation!!!
Will do.
That jacket looks great, really captured the comic style. Great job, fun video!
Love the paint job on the pizza!
That board stuff looks to be foam core!
I think it's "Sintra". I don't know if plastic glue would work on foamcore.
Dude that looks great! I love the idea of the cellphone lighting. Cool Vid- Pizza Boi!!!
Best video I’ve seen come out of the new studio. I loved the introspection and being honest with yourself. I love how the model turned out overall.
You painted a Robert Smith Rainbow. I dig it.
Awesome style and color on this one. Great work!
I saw the thumbnail for this video.... I felt hungry.
I watched you paint the pizza.... I had to then order a pizza.
Great video! Mindwork have some interesting 75mm minis for sure
Of all the Mindwork models I own, I couldn't bring myself to buy this one. But you did a great job.
Great video! This style of commentary that you employ really lines up with how I think while painting. The way you explained comic book “efficiency” gave me inspiration to try things differently. Have a good day!

Hi Scott. It's really cool as always. 👍
I think this might be the best video you've ever made. Loved the production value and that hoodie looks fantastic.
I like your format dude. I never feel like you're pushing those clickbait buttons. Always great content 👍
Ouch! As someone who is struggling painting an Arbites with black armor, the comment on de color-highlight-distribution gives me flashbacks....

nice job on that wall!
Awesome job and video, thank you.
I've been wanting to learn this style for a long time! Thanks for this
Nailed the 'comic book' style. When you were painting the guys top in the video it really looks 2d, if you know what I mean....
Notification squad where you at!
Have you thought about trying cell shading on a mini? I'm debating how to pull it off and would love your thoughts.
Outcome focused over here *raises a guilty hand

Scott's hand at the start looking like a burn victim from the priming 😂
your really too good for my eyes. As a long time watcher nice watching your channel grow.
Oh that material you’re using is called foam core. Its great for a lot of things.
I looked away for a moment and turned back right when you were ripping his head off. It caught me off guard, not gonna lie. Lol.
Nice! He comes off as a milestone character
Amazing work, thanks man!
