A true masterpiece on every level. I often wondered why, many years ago while studying music in college, this great work was hardly ever performed let alone recorded. Now, it seems it has taken it's rightful place among the pantheon of great concertos.
Rachmaninoff penned three versions of this concerto. The original was in 1926 (which only he performed during his lifetime). It got a very poor reception. Rachmaninoff withdrew it and revised it, publishing the second version in 1928. It also met with little success or interest. In 1941, he revised it yet again. It was the second-t0-last music he penned (his arrangement of Tchaikovsky's lullabye Op 16 no.1 was the last). Each revision shortened the work significantly. The original runs for a bit over 31 minutes (1012 bars), the 1928 about 27 minutes (902 bars), and1941 version takes about 25 minutes (824 bars). Rachmaninoff also made several other changes that weren't ever put in paper; some pianists have performed this by studying Rachmaninoff's own performance of it (with Ormandy). I don't know if Maestro Lugansky is performing the 1928 version, the 1941 version, or (more likely, since he is very thorough in his analysis) a version based on Rachmaninoff's performance with Ormandy. Or he may have added some of his own ideas. In any case, it's excellent.

At 4:49 in that part you can clearly hear Rachmaninov’s deep depression. That dark and powerful melody. It’s melancholic but beautiful. It’s a shame that the 4th piano concerto isn’t as popular as the 2nd or the 3rd piano concerto...
It is a concert originally from 1929 (This version is from 1941), 12 years after the Bolshevik revolution. It is possible that by that time the composer had already resigned himself to his fate as an exile. Some reminiscences of the author's memory, such as the ringing of the 1st. Slavic movement and dances in the 3rd.
I think we should all count our blessings that this astounding composition finally gets the recognition it deserves, and that it is performed more frequently. This concerto is highly expressive and epic, and Lugansky and orchestra certainly did their very best to let it shine throughout. Wonderful, thanks so much for upload!
Although I love all Rachmaninoff’s concertos, this one is my favorite, requiring both immense skill and emotional sensitivity . I LOVE the melodic interlude in the first movement followed by the sequential chord progressions. A genius who speaks to my soul. Rest in the sweet Peace you didn’t always acquire here on earth and thank you for every glorious note of everything you ever put on music paper 🎹 And major kudos to Mr Lugansky for this definitive performance

На мой взгляд, Николай Луганский - один из самых близких по духу Музыкантов Рахманинову, тончайший, глубокий Пианист и виртуоз (и как Личность тоже, интеллигентнейший и образованнейший человек)! Впервые услышал 4-й концерт Рахманинова в исполнении прекрасного пианиста Филиппа Копачевского и НФОР п/у Владимира Спивакова на концерте, посвящённом 150-летию Сергея Васильевича Рахманинова, в Большом зале МКЗ "Зарядье" 21 мая 2023 г., это было здорово (на "бис" были "Белые ночи. Май" из "Времён года" Петра Ильича Чайковского, также очень рекомендую послушать запись "Мая..." в выдающемся исполнении потрясающего Музыканта, Пианиста Наума Штаркмана)!
Amazing!!! The whole buildup from 25:09, going through the repetition of one of the (slightly modified) main themes at 25:17 and the following coda must be one of the most powerful moments in the repertoire. And so masterfully executed!!!
I love all the Ramaninoff concerti. A pity this one and my favorite, no 1, aren't more played. Congratulations to Mr. Lugansky, conductor and orchestra on an amazing job.
I think that "the problem" with no 1 is the finale. I mean, the first movement is fantastic, with a cadenza which has nothing to envy to the ossia of the 3rd one. The second movement is simply beautiful. The third one, I'm not saying I don't like it, but is the one that people often doesn't like in this concert. Rachmaninoff most famous and played concerts are 2 and 3, the last pages of both finales are pretty similar, I mean big tuttis accompanied by chords on the piano and then a fast final cadence. The first version of the first concerto had it too, the orchestra played the theme of the major section while the piano accompanied with octaves. Rachmaninoff did the revision in 1917, after having written the 2nd and 3rd, and the finale completely changed. And it's very similar to the one in this video. This is just an observation, it shows how the composers style changed. I mean from the big finales with the entire orchestra playing a very moving theme (2nd and 3rd) and the more flashy ones (not worse) in 1st and 4th. Sorry my English isn't very good

However I REALLY like the 3rd movement of Opus 1 (1917 version) and I love the fireworks, color and the technical demands SVR requires to play it. The 3rd movement was my introduction to Opus 1 approximately 40 years ago with Byron Janis as the pianist.

As you had stated, Op 1 really does not have the "personality" of Op 18 or Op 30 (Op 30 seems designed by SVR for an obligatory standing ovation). I was more conveying I am likely an outlier, in liking the 3rd movement of Op 1 because of it virtuoso writing and how flashy, rhythmic and chromatic it is.
Oh the sublime, exquisite chord progressions at the end of the second movement totally engulf me in goosebumps. Ditto for the end of the second movement of Concerto #2

Shame that it didn't do well in its premiere, and it's not been often performed and recorded... it's a dark, but powerful and beautiful concerto.. God damn this is a superb concerto! It is so complex that people are a little put off by it. However, it is overpoweringly powerful and expressive in its thematic development. Rachmaninov certainly loved it because he kept working on it. When I read that Rach was "preoccupied with issues of struggle and acceptance" in the writing of this concerto, one can see that it goes "over the heads" of most people. Poor Rach was a bit paranoid and felt out of place despite the fact that he was a world renowned pianist, conductor, but more importantly composer. It is sad that he couldn't see that the world recognized his giftedness, but this melancholy does make his music even greater than it is.
Rachmaninoff was too gifted to be well understood in his lifetime as a composer; it seems his time came once there were so many gifted virtuoso pianists who wanted to tackle his intriguing and complex works. Lugansky is one of them and he is remarkably talented. I love Rach's etudes and preludes, all of his choral works.
It was certainly the concerto no one really expected. And, to be completely fair, Rachmaninoff was assimilating a lot of new music after he left Russia. He was aware of Stravinsky's neo-classicism. He went frequently to jazz clubs in New York. He attended the Paul Whiteman concert where Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue was premiered. The latter influences are even more apparent in the first version of this concerto. I don't know if Rachmaninoff felt completely satisfied with it. Maybe he would have reworked it again had he lived longer. But there are some really astounding things going on, which keep me coming back to this piece.
This is such a heart rending concerto, really fantastic. It is played so beautifully by Nikolai. It should be played more. Someone once asked me what it was all about as he couldn't understand it! Nothing to understand really, just sit back and enjoy.
The almost theme and variation nature of the 3rd movement is reminiscent of the Paganini Rhapsody. My recording of this was the legendary Michelangeli.. with his incredible Ravel Concerto.
This Rschmaninoff piano concerto like its predecessor, #1, is also rarely performed since it is also almost impossible for most pianists. It is a wonder that in 1940 around the age of 67 Rachmaninoff was able to record his fine performance of this concerto wihose construction shows some influence from the concertos of his friend Medtner.
I was vacationing in Maui and played this so many times, I always relate those memories when I hear this even now, many years later. God bless the residents of Maui affected by the tragic fire. So hard to imagine Lahaina leveled.
The master Lugansky delivers another flawless performance. However this recording does not have the fidelity of the others in this series (Nos 1-2and3),
I GOT KIND OF BURNED OUT ON PIANO CONCERTOS #2 and #3. Especially #2, which oddly, lacks a cadenza. (So does #4, and the Paganini Rhapsody.) The redundancy of the final movement of #2, having that famous theme scored thrice, wore thin with me, even as beautiful as it is. Even though Rachmaninoff scored three different versions of #4, at the time of his death he was STILL struggling with the piece, and was scoring a version, unbelievably, for two pianos! (Read about this on Wikipedia.) The climax to #4 makes my hair stand on end. So, so many beautiful and haunting melodies appear throughout this masterpiece. Given that Rachmaninoff composed his #1 when he was only 18 years old, later revising it, and it has more appealing themes to me than either #2 or #3, and my favorite cadenza, (the longest of all that he composed), and it has the most thrilling and virtuosic opening of any piano concerto of which I am aware, I grew to rank #1 as great as all of Rachmaninoff's other immortal works for piano and orchestra. Obviously, the variations on a theme of Paganini essentially counts as a "concerto," and ranks as high as ANY work that he ever composed. My only criticism of the score is that the part written for the harp only lasts for around ten seconds!🙈😫🙉 Someone should revise the score for the harp to appear throughout the piece, making the work much more "rhapsodic" than it already is. This shouldn't be that difficult to do. I dream of a "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini for Harp, Piano and Orchestra." 💎🎶💎🎶💎🎶 🦢🙏🦢🙏🦢🙏
В музыкальном отношении - исполнение абсолютно безупречно. За основу смысловых акцентов взята (как мне показалось) авторская запись. А лучшего и не придумаешь! Жаль только, что изображение размыто. Видео-оператор мог бы показать наиболее интересные места на клавиатуре (хотя у Рахманинова вся клавиатура очень интересна!). По-моему, камера двигалась весьма хаотично по оркестру и по пианисту.
Совершенно разделяю Вашу точку зрения. Очень непростой концерт в ансамблевом и ритмическом отношении. И то и другое здесь было прекрасно представлено. Темпы замечательные. Николай играет прямо и искренне, без сентиментальных излишеств, но выразительно и аккуратно во всех смыслах. Здорово. Большой музыкант. Я учился с ним на одном курсе, а когда слушаю сейчас его игру, не могу понять, как я смог поступить в консерваторию в этот год. Думаю, что случайное везение. Николай - гордость российской музыкальной культуры. Ещё и очень хорошо выглядит.

It's definitely the 1941 version. I've listened to both other versions on UA-cam, and it seems that lugansky stayed faithful to the latest version.

Lugansky is an outstanding artist. I happen to have all 24 Rachmaninoff preludes by him, and I am in awe everytine I listen to that CD.

My only criticism of the score is that the part written for the harp only lasts for around ten seconds!🙈😫🙉 Someone should revise the score for the harp to appear throughout the piece, making the work much more "rhapsodic" than it already is. This shouldn't be that difficult to do. I dream of a
"Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini for Harp, Piano and Orchestra."

В музыкальном отношении - исполнение абсолютно безупречно. За основу смысловых акцентов взята (как мне показалось) авторская запись. А лучшего и не придумаешь! Жаль только, что изображение размыто. Видео-оператор мог бы показать наиболее интересные места на клавиатуре (хотя у Рахманинова вся клавиатура очень интересна!). По-моему, камера двигалась весьма хаотично по оркестру и по пианисту.
Совершенно разделяю Вашу точку зрения. Очень непростой концерт в ансамблевом и ритмическом отношении. И то и другое здесь было прекрасно представлено. Темпы замечательные. Николай играет прямо и искренне, без сентиментальных излишеств, но выразительно и аккуратно во всех смыслах. Здорово. Большой музыкант. Я учился с ним на одном курсе, а когда слушаю сейчас его игру, не могу понять, как я смог поступить в консерваторию в этот год. Думаю, что случайное везение. Николай - гордость российской музыкальной культуры. Ещё и очень хорошо выглядит.
