She's right. It's draining. She took crap from Tony, Meadow AND AJ. She had to be strong and hold everything (at home) together while he took care of all his needs. He was able to escape through sex, alcohol, gambling etc. (she'd use shopping to numb). The things she complained about the most usually related to their family...kids, their school, their future, their security. The things he complained about always revolved around him. He was so machismo....so long as he brought home the bacon, he could do whatever and not have to think about the needs or feelings of anyone else. He was indeed, Livia's son.
+ApplePieUniverse1 This is after AJ's attempt, right? That's the significance of Carm looking out at the pool. It's funny because this scene is like role reversal. For once it's Tony trying to be upfront and honest(ish), and Carm being all repressed and passive aggressive, and uncaring. Guess she's pissed about AJ.
In Season 6 Carmela looks 75 with a wig on. The life she's succumbed to has drained away all her affection and dignity. Same with Tony being clouded by his gluttony and greed. They're both not worth following anymore, and that's why the series ends the way it ends.
I think there is a hidden detail that is important. Tony is upset when Carmella says, "he is playing the depression card". However, at an earlier scene, Tony asks Christopher "how long he is going to play the Adriana card." I think the writers are trying to demonstrate Tony's hypocrisy. It's things like this that make the show the greatest of all time.
"Your family don't even talk. Your father's so bottled up he barely has a stomach left." So suddenly "The Strong Silent Type" Gary Cooper doesn't appeal to him anymore.

1:53 "you have any idea what it's like to spend day after day with somebody who is constantly compaining?" As a matter of fact yes, Tony knows damn well lol
Carmela would stop complaining if Tony's whores stopped calling the house and his clothes didn't stink of their perfume. And if he was a little more loving towards her. Hell, she was even okay with him cheating with goomahs as long as she and the kids were never exposed to it. But they were.
The series starts with their lives already in-progress and not from the start of their marriage, so in the pilot Carmela is already bitter about Tony seeing Irina (though they cast two different actresses for the part). As viewers we don't see a decline in her level of satisfaction in her relationship with Tony. The show starts with her already bitter. That's why she made that cruel comment about Tony going to hell when he dies. She was referring to his sins...his extra-marital affairs. The fact that his fooling around bothered her, showed that she still loved him, which she admitted to him while he was unconscious, in the hospital, after being shot. That was a tender moment as she reflected on happier times.
Amazing scene. Something that just hit me was how Carmela at 1:25 says Tony used to be the happy go lucky rapscallion guy yet we’ve seen how when Tony would play with her she would shut him out. For example back in season 4 Tony plays a prank on her in the shower and she gets upset over it or how in season 5 Tony and AJ throw her into the pool and she gets sour over it. It gives more credence to the idea that AJs pessimism and miserable disposition isn’t all from Tony. It also shows how Carmela is more like Tony than she chooses to believe.
Yeah the shower one pissed me off because clearly Tony was playing with her and showed affection and she sucked the air out of his mood. He went from happy to annoyed quickly. Carmela, like Livia was devoid of happiness
She got sour in season 5? Are you alright? He threw her in the pool and then they had sex. While they were seperated. Because he cheated repeatedly. Sopranos fans are tied with Breaking Bad fans for terrible takes I swear.
“Do you have any idea what it’s like to spend day after day with someone who is constantly complaining?” That line, from Carmela herself, will never fail to make me laugh out loud lol
Imagine telling your wife that you’re genuinely struggling with your mental health and her response is “don’t get me started I’ve got a long day and I can’t deal with your bullshit”
A lot of Women do that. Weakness is a turn off to women. I understand why it's cuz it's evolutionary hardwired into them. If her man shows weakness it triggers her brain that he's unreliable and can't protect her even if she might love him it'll still effect her. That's why you don't show weakness or vulnerability to women also they'll use it against you in an argument like this scene illustrates. If you must show vulnerability show it around close friends never your significant other.
The on screen chemistry these two have is impeccable. I literally cannot imagine anyone on this planet playing Tony and Carmela as well as Edie and James.
Some folks are quick to accuse Carmela of being materialistic or vindictive in this scene. Carmela has lived a lofty, comfortable lifestyle with Tony for a good portion of her life, but as we've seen in previous seasons, she's very repressed and unfulfilled. Her routine and way of life with Tony has been reduced to being a simple wife, who can do nothing to bring comfort to people except by feeding them or showering them with material goods. This season was the tipping point; her husband, her only arguable source of a life-purpose, was on the verge of death; one of her closest friends, Angie, whose life had been all-but-ruined by Tony in season 2&3, has risen above the ashes and has become an independent force to be reckoned with; her sole commercial venture, the spec house, which was once a source of pride is now a precarious liability; she has a vague suspicion that Adriana is dead and it's possible "this life" is responsible, but her helplessness prevents her from pursuing the matter further; and now, A.J. is on suicide-watch. Carmela has SO much misplaced anger and repressed rage. It's honestly a miracle she never came close to pulling a Janice (see: Richie Aprile), which I think only speaks to the tragedy of her character.

''Do you have any idea what it's like to listen to somebody moaning everyday'' Tony should have said, ''tell me about it - all the people I murder to put expensive clothes on you whiny back and you're never happy. Think I'll go see my goomah''
Most of Tony's income came from legitimate businesses, as he stated to Meadow when they were going around looking for high schools or whatever, when she asks him if he was in the mafia. So I don't think that Tony has to kill someone over every garment of clothing that they own, the cars that they drive, the house, spending habits etc. because if any given mafia family were to kill one person for every material item that they had? Then that would be overkill and the family would not last very long at all, due to too much police attention and all.
Davendra Sharma I wouldn't call extorting money from small business owners, robbing delivery trucks, murdering people, or utilising corrupt union methods to secure lucrative construction jobs-garbage routes 'legitimate business'. Interesting that you mention Tony and Meadow when they were in Maine to scout out a potential college - but conveniently forget that Tony hunted down and strangled to death a mafia informant on that trip. Hardly a legitimate business practice!

These two are amazing. My father was an alcoholic and when he would try opening up about his struggle my mother would do something similar like Carmela here. James and Edie make it feel so real.
Regardless of her hypocrisy, she is right. It's exhausting to be around a depressed person constantly as it drains your energy and leaves you depressed yourself. Whilst Carmela is a complainer, she has born the brunt of Tony's reckless actions, his countless infidelities and numerous angry outbursts on top of being the only sensible parent to a formerly bratty teen (Meadow) and perpetually bratty nuisance (AJ). True, she is a mooching gold digger, but I think the point of their argument was to show how fractured their family was because of Carmela and Tony's problems.
Carmella was So selfish in this scene. Mental illness is a real disorder. Some people are more prone to it than others and it definitely can be genetic. You think Tony liked having it? Or seeing it passed down to his son ? Saying "well he didn't get it from my side" was COLD as fuck. Like sorry Carmella that you come from a perfect family and perfect lifestyle and never had to work a day in your life. Then wants to say all Tony does is complain, WELL AINT THAT HYPOCRITICAL
I agree with you but homework IS work too. And in their huge caste....that's a lot to maintain. Did you ever see Tony, Meadow or Aj, so much as pick up a sponge, wash a dish? Meadow couldn't even fill her glass with OJ until she was about to leave for college...and even then she rolled her eyes.
Like Tony doesn’t do that a million times more. He literally mocks Chris for being in rehab and taking care of himself, when it was him who told him to get clean in the first place, and then when he relapses he kills him. The way people in this fanbase defend Tony like he’s some innocent baby is incredible.
Carmela is resents Tony. She's hurting and angry at Tony, do she does not show him very much compassion. She's very cold towards him and doesn't make him feel good about himself which always drives him into the arms of another woman to receive the comfort he's looking for. He cheats on her, she finds out, she gets angry and feels hurt (rightfully so) she pushes him away, and Tony cheats again. Vicious cycle they're trapped in.
In the modern world women pretty much have unlimited options for male partners so they can pretty much drop your ass at any moment for any reason and be in a new relationship the same day
She knew what she was getting into every step of the way Tony had told her earlier and as her therapist had told her she was the accomplice one of the points he got right in his Meandering about Dostoevsky
Have you even seen the show? This was perhaps the only time Tony was truly honest about how he felt with Carmela, and she chastizes him, put the blame of his son’s depression on Tony and makes it all about her (how dare YOUR depression affect ME). Sure, people with depression can many times behind their condition, I know I have (even if it’s not conscious), but way Carmella dealt with it is probably the worst way to deal with a depressed person.
@@Gaboxxy96 2 years late but Tony was suffering from depression for like 10 years and made like no attempts to change and only got worse. I don’t blame Carmela especially since this is right after aj tried to kill himself
Tony bad mouthed people who talked about their feelings and always talked about a "strong, silent type". He even said people use depression as a crutch, then he wanted to lay it all on Carmela after all his cheating, galavanting and bullshit, and she's supposed to console him? I'm glad she spoke up. She was wrong however for saying A.J. didn't inherit any problems from her or her family though. Because Carmela is setting a bad example for being married to a monster. Just like Tony sets a bad example, they both have good and bad parts but the bad outweighed the good.
So, whatever the real situation, they were both bad people. Instead of both trying to support each-other, they both tried to blame each-other for the bad things. That's not the way to go.
The people who focus on Carmella when they have the biggest sociopath on TV for a protagonist never cease to amaze me. Almost everything that Tony does is criticizable, but people just accept it because it’s Tony. Male bias at its finest, same with Walter White

The acting. The script. The circumstances. The actors reactions to each other. Perfect.
You could literally make a Harvard final project of just listing every time Tony has been a selfish hypocrite
1:53
I'm sure Tony does have an idea how that feels like.
Carmela could've picked a better time for this ''discussion'' no???
Yep, for sure. But she was worn thin with AJ's attempted suicide.
Lol the subtitles on is so funny “COD? COD?” LOL
Most women will bail if the man gets depression or at the least get angry if the man shows or admits to having moments of weakness
In the modern world women pretty much have unlimited options for male partners so they can pretty much drop your ass at any moment for any reason and be in a new relationship the same day
Edie Falco is such a great actress. Among many on this show.
This is some of the best acting a person will ever see. Beginnings to end this scene is absolute gold by two incredible actors.
I love how whenever Tony and Carm fight, they switch to a handheld shaky camera
Anyone who's been in a shitty relationship knows it really does feel like that at times
"Poor you!" Sound like any other Sopranos character you know? ;)
Joonas Lehtola what fooah? it's awl a big nuthin'!
Joonas Lehtola
Yea, his mudder

Throwing gold watches at each other - classy
Tony had great self control here
This sums up when women say how men should "open up" but in reality react this way
True
He doesn’t thank her for pouring him coffee? I mean I know they’ve been married forever but he treats her like a doormat sometimes.
"Now the coffee sucks."
She knew what she was getting into every step of the way Tony had told her earlier and as her therapist had told her she was the accomplice one of the points he got right in his Meandering about Dostoevsky
Damn I wish I could live a life where I can throw around a watch worth thousands of dollars like a baseball
She's right. A lot of people with depression start using it as an excuse to be assholes.
August Von Mackensen people with any "mental illness" really
Have you even seen the show? This was perhaps the only time Tony was truly honest about how he felt with Carmela, and she chastizes him, put the blame of his son’s depression on Tony and makes it all about her (how dare YOUR depression affect ME). Sure, people with depression can many times behind their condition, I know I have (even if it’s not conscious), but way Carmella dealt with it is probably the worst way to deal with a depressed person.
@@Gaboxxy96 my sorry ass foster parent did the same to me my junior year of high school.
Hey look, someone who has no idea how mental illness works is chiming in his opinion!
@@Gaboxxy96 2 years late but Tony was suffering from depression for like 10 years and made like no attempts to change and only got worse. I don’t blame Carmela especially since this is right after aj tried to kill himself
Edie and Jim are brilliant in this scene. Like a master class in acting.
CAHD? CAHD?- Tony
Just like Tony sets a bad example, they both have good and bad parts but the bad outweighed the good.
truly, well put
Depressing scene. So dreary. So unlike earlier seasons.
The bullet through the beehive hairdo and they had the scene on many saints of Newark lol classic
In this scene i forgot they where acting for a second so pure how good they are at acting
It's incredible. I felt like I was listening to my folks again.
So, whatever the real situation, they were both bad people. Instead of both trying to support each-other, they both tried to blame each-other for the bad things. That's not the way to go.
Carm was a devoted mom and wife even though she was wrong about a lot of things.
Her look after Tony's FU send them shivers down my spine every time.
More and more Tony was becoming like his mother.
he family was so perfect lol. her 45 pound father and a dragon for a mother. Carmella is just an ungrateful money grabbing nobody.
She was a money-grubby stabilizing force that Tony took for granted.
Hugh was cool as fuck big deal he was a short dude?
The people who focus on Carmella when they have the biggest sociopath on TV for a protagonist never cease to amaze me. Almost everything that Tony does is criticizable, but people just accept it because it’s Tony. Male bias at its finest, same with Walter White
@@Johnnysmithy24 You know what, fuck you! Male bias, give me a break! Watch the show and see if theres any decent women on it, and there were dozens, developed ones i'm talking about, not incidental characters like goomahs and stuff, and yes there were equally very few decent men on it as well, i'll give you that... But male bias? Lemme tell u couple three things. Change the dealer first, then attend slip and fall school. You femenine attention seeker slippery fuck.
This scene perfectly shows why men don't talk about what's eating at them >_>
i am intimately acquainted with the soprano shinebox
Oh man I'm with Carmella all the way on this one when she says, it wears on you being around someone who's always depressed.. I know she was no walk in the park either.. but jeez.. she put up with a lot from Tony and I don't blame her for kicking it back here... believe you me I've been there and it sure ain't no fun.. cheers David
“Poor you”
2:01 when someone spits facts at you and you have nothing else to say and can't help the fact you have to accept that you got put in your place and you sit silently without responding back
carmella could of picked a better time than bringing this up. but i did like the donkey cart reference.
A nostalgic flight down memory lane.
@@ZPD-doo-DAH hilarious mentally picturing that 🤣

Hopefully it was a Rolex!
This is the best argument hands down.
Card? CARD? Lmao
i hate when you confide in people tell them something embarrassing they say nothing act all sympathetic, then they save it for later, use it when you least expect it, either you use it against me right there or forget about, saving shit for later is about the lowest thing a person can do imo
Wasn't it Janice who told her about the beehive?
Like Tony doesn’t that 10 times more. No one in this show is a bigger hypocrite, selfish, or narcissist than Tony
@@Johnnysmithy24 selfish narcissist, Tony? Yes.
Biggest hypocrite of the show? Carmella, actually.
Tony, a hypocrite? A helluva big one, but Carmella surpasses him by far.
@@nathaninostroza7655 Nah man, Carmella is a hypocrite but Tony is far worse. All his lines/actions/beliefs are hypocritical in some way
@@Johnnysmithy24 Tony s a massive hypocrite, indeed... But if you got the context into account, go watch that scene with Carmella and the jew shrink, and tell me she, with her self righteous bullshit, isnt da biggest hypocrite. Fair enough she isnt a stone cold sociopath and stuff, but she was far more morally bankrupted. Well, this is the premise of this show, not to feature decent ppl doing alright and inspire. So do your homework, pal.
Carmela definitely had the makings of a varsity athlete
Sopranos comments sections are the most entertaining on UA-cam
Tony did have an idea what it was like to live with someone who was constantly complaining...Livia.
Never show your woman weakness or else she'll use it against u later on #facts

Nothing but that real talk
Fuck empathy, this is da truth. Period
There was nothing he could do. Tony was a made guy and the watch wasn't. Real greaseball shit.
Piece of performance. Eddie Falco… stupendous
Tony’s face at 2:00 is fucking priceless 🤣🤣
Carmella really took to the Better of the For Better or Worse thing.
Look at all the incels in the comment section.
