I love how excited Mark is to make a claim on his home insurance policy. Despite finding out he's having a kid. Or that Jez is having a kid with his ex wife. Or that he has to deprogram his best friend. He is a man with is priorities sorted and color coded.
It's quite tempting to view Hans as so hedonistic, shallow and sociopathically cruel that he stands out from Mark and Jez, but the series is packed with moments where both of 'em were just as horrible. Hans is just unapologetic.
Well there’s a theory that super Hans and Johnson represent what both jez and mark want to be. Jez wants to be the hard liver, drugs and girls and the such. Whilst mark wants to be like Johnson, confident and outspoken, however they both end up failing to become what they want to be.
I personally never found any individual in this show to be in any way 'likeable'. That's what makes it so realistic. I would never hang out with a single one of them.
It's telling how he needs to go through a whole "Mark will think..." thought process before saying to Super Hans that he'll move in to the center. Jez really struggles with independence and standing on his own two feet. Not that Mark is really that different: they both tend to form symbiotic relationships that offer escapes from their loneliness and responsibility for their own lives. Mark just rationalizes things better and clings to his sensibility like a lifeline. Not that I'm really judging them, I think it's painful to watch them partly because of how relatable they can be.
"You're right on schedule, according to the book. Hardback book, based on tablets brought by an asteroid - something you can rely on" is one of the funniest lines in the entire series. Don't know how Matt King managed to say that with a straight face.

This show has a million cracker lines and most of them are from Hans, but "stay in the death star with captain haddock" is an all time hall of fame line, top 5
"I'm going clear" is such a good line. Because in the context of scientology, going clear means you are leaving the cult. There was a famous documentary called Going Clear about that very topic. So good.
Going Clear means the opposite of leaving in Scientology. If you’re “clear” it means you’ve attained the highest level of spirituality and understanding within the Scientology cosmology.
I actually took that Scientology test. I got as far as the question "When you look at a train timetable, how does it make you feel?" Suddenly I realised I'd just wasted 5 minutes of my life and it was not a funny or interesting thing to do. Thinking back the phrasing of that question sounds like something a therapist would say (at least the 2nd part) and they're the industry Scientologists are trying to eradicate
I don't think it's a real game. There are other episodes where Mark is playing a CRPG on his desktop, and it was clearly created for the show. It's probably the same one.
Super Hans smashing up the tv reminds me of a children's sci-fi from 1975 called The Changes, where one of the characters does exactly the same in the opening scene. There's also a 'Merlin' in the series. All coincidence though, probably.
I love how many comedy programmes do an episode with an unnamed cult that’s similar enough to Scientology that everyone knows what their on about but not so similar that their team of million dollar lawyers will descend on them. To their credit, the only one that called them out explicitly by name, was South Park of all things.
I love how Jez can't be bothered to read Wuthering Heights, and in fact finds it impossible, but he's read and committed to memory the entire New Wellness book within a couple of days.
