For anyone considering following or taking lessons from Lauren.....I'm a retired pro musician. Stumbling around YT I found this. This is an excellent video for beginning guitarists. It's easy to understand, well presented, provides a few good examples for each progression, and is not overly complicated or long. The best part? It feeds your desire to play and to continually learn, simply by making it easy for you to play many songs, today. Great job, Lauren! And no, I do not know Lauren, nor has she paid me to write this. Get out your guitar, and play... you'll make mistakes, but remember, you learned to walk by falling down.
Agree... I'm a jazzer, and haven't really paid much attention to contemporary music for the last 30 years, but I'm wanting to do more 'round the campfire' kind of playing. These kinds of videos are great (plus, I'm rarely playing in open position in jazz, so this is also helpful). Yes, I know the chords, but I can't quote relevant music aside from jazz tunes. Thanks! Also weird not having sharped/flatted 5, 9, 11, 13 etc. lol

Lauren, your videos are always so upbeat, inspiring, and helpful. Thanks for all your hard work and the love for teaching us newbies that you put into each one. I get so down on myself for not making "enough" progress, but watching you always builds me back up.

Nice video, what I like about the number system is that I find it's easier to remember a I, IV, V progression than G, C, D. Even though they are the same thing.

Great instructions for those trying to learn guitar. Very easy to get someone up and playing songs quickly. Understand the chord progressions is essential to playing guitar. I've been playing quite a while now and because I am very familiar with so many chord progression I was playing with a woman who has hearing loss and had been a very good singer over the years, however. I was accompanying her during an informal group sing it was obvious she had trouble keeping on key. We practiced the songs and established the key she would sing each song but when we got in front to lead all of that practice went out the window. She changed the key of each song as she still has a powerful voice so I had to quickly adapt to each song to find the key she was in and play my song accordingly. Thanks to knowing these chord progressions and having an idea about where she was going to start it made what would have stomped my years ago, it was easy for me to do this. If you are really interested in learning guitar she will be a great teacher to learn from as she makes it easy to learn the chords and fit them all together.
Love watching your chord change speed..!!! I finally played along to a song and it has opened up a whole new way of practising....interesting how nearly every playalong song (easy) is C G D and Em..!!! 🤘🤘🎸🎸

Well Done, Lauren! I don't play guitar, but chord progressions matter for all instruments. I teach accordion & keyboard, and this all works there as well. Pearl Jam's cover of Wayne Cochran's "Last Kiss" is a favorite of many I play music with....

thank you so much for this Lauren ! you are a lifesaver buddy ! :) knowing these chord progressions and having a capo is part of the key to me being able to play the guitar to my favourite songs in the most simplist way possible ! :)
Best of times. I don't know any songs but I do know the Order of 5 cord progressions. Yesterday at the Dog park I had my Traveler out. I simply played with progressions with a few embellishments. To the surprise of many, my puppy sat at my feet and then most the other dogs came over to sit and listen. If it wasn't for Lauren, I would not have the Foundations to be able to do what I am 2 years later.
Hi, great lesson. Something that a lot of people struggle with. I'm a bass player and learning and understanding chord progressions is important for bass players as well. I know many people who think it's to difficult to learn or they might think it's boring and say, I just want to play. Many also quit after a short period of time after taking up the instrument. Well this is what you need to know so you can play, like the student you mentioned early in the video. It's really not that difficult to learn as your lesson shows in a simple and easy to understand way. Cheers
Hey Lauren I know another great song to play on the guitar which only has 4 chords in it which is in the original key of F major ! the song is called "Oh Donna !" by Ritchie Vallens & Los Lobos, The chords are F major, Bb Major and C major and F dominant 7 chords ! I love to play this song on the electric guitar on open G tuning and use barre chords for it, and I also love to play this on my soprano ukulele, my trick to playing this song on the ukulele is I transpose the ukulele chord shapes up 2 semitone notes up to the key of G major, so I can play simple easy open chord shapes from the key of G major, by playing open chords G major, C major, D major and G7 (G Dominant 7) chords, but I then actually re tune my ukulele down only 2 semitones notes so that my ukulele tuning becomes F A# D G tuning (2 semitones down from G C E A Fiji island beginner tuning) so that after retuning my ukulele to this tuning so I can now play this song on my ukulele in the original key of F major without a capo just like the original record !!!! :) I also love to play all the lead guitar parts to this song on my electric guitar too
G, Em, C, D Is pretty easy to transition... Until that black sheep D. Everything else centers around those 2 notes on the 2nd and 3rd frets. Easy peasy. That D is out there all by itself being a trouble maker. I did a little research into the circle of fifths before and this all makes perfect sense to me. I'm getting this a lot easier than I expected. Thank you for your tireless work. Imma get the 7 step program when I can scratch up the duckets.
A fantastic song that shows good use to chord progressions is John Denver country road. He simply rotates the same chords just in a different progression and its beautiful. Great tune to learn.
I don't know about anyone else, but this may be my favorite lesson from you so far. A little music theory in the morning, love it! If you overlapped this lesson with my Beatles Songbook, it would be brilliant and something I've noticed for years now. Yes, that was praise and a clue😉
I love my Crafter D6 acoustic guitar someone gave me. I own tons of high-end and vintage acoustics and all I play is my Crafter, It's got the most even voice and best intonation of any of my guitars. Crafter.... a goofy name, but a great axe!
Crafter guitars are excellent. I own a TCO-35, a DE-8/12 string, a GAE-8 and a GAE-9, so far. I'm breaking it to my wife gently, that they also make the GAE-6, 7, 12, 15, 24, 33 etc... I had a slight buzz on my GAE-8, caused by the nut being slightly too low, so I've just stuck a folded piece of paper (0.010") under it and the improvement is staggering.
@@ParaBellum2024 Just sayin here, but you should fix the nut properly. Either buy a new GraphTech TUSQ nut or an unbleached 43mm nut and have it installed by a tech at your fav shop or at the very least, do the superglue and talc temporary fix for the low slot in your current nut. If done right with the correct nut files, that can last for years.
@@guitartec Thanks. I've teched my own guitars for years, and if this nut had been bad, might have replaced it, but as it was, the whole thing just needed to be raised. My quick fix is no worse than superglue and bicarbonate of soda (not talc), and before long the paper will get dirty and fade from view. For those of us who are handy, creative, and own some decent tools, there's no need to pay someone else to carry out tasks such as this. The one time I did entrust a shop to do a job (fitting a nut to a telecaster), they made a pig's ear of it.
Like so many songs that can be played with these chord progressions that just fit together in their respective keys it is worthwhile if beginning guitar players, and I am one, check out some videos on the circle of 5ths as you can see and begin to understand the various keys and the chords in them, major and minor and how these simple chord progressions form for each key.Yes its music theory but interesting and helpful once you start to understand it.
Thanks Lauren, I'm teaching myself guitar and ok with the chords, but hit a bit of a wall with speed of changing chords. It's obviously a good idea not to try and play too many chords and just focus on 3 or 4 basic chords as in your video. Always enjoy your lessons and look forward to the next one! Great that you take the time to produce and upload them. Thanks.
Practice trying just going back and forth from 2 chords, a couple minutes at a time then try another combo. Repetition is key but go slow and make sure you ensure you do it right each time before building up speed. Then add more chords as you can switch faster. Always keep in mind what fingers you can keep anchored instead of lifting and be aware how you can change more efficiently. She probably has more basic videos for that. I would recommend you to learn the 'stuck method' with the key of G chord progressions too. Justin Guitar has a video for that. You basically play slightly different chords variations but you can keep 2 of your fingers in place and while only switching your index and middle fingers. Many players use this method, and I've been using it for years. I like the sound of them better for the most part.
Do you use a metronome? Practicing for speed means you have to push yourself. This also means your chords will sounds muted and sloppy. In order to get faster, you have to sacrifice clarity.
@@LaurenBateman No I don't, but it sounds like a good idea. I think I just want to get to a reasonable level of playing too quickly! It also depends on the day....sometimes pretty good, other times very average. All part of the learning cycle eh? Good suggestion though Lauren thanks.
@@bryandoyle7055 All good suggestions Bryan thanks. Yes my main issue relates to chords which are nowhere near each other, still takes a while to 'search' for the fingering. Lots of tutoring videos on line as you say - some better than others (Lauren's is great). Will give this a try though because I'm really enjoying it and just want to keep improving and playing songs. All the best.
Using a metrenome to speed up your chord changes is the way to go, Lauren has a great lesson showing you how, it certainly worked for me, plenty of free menetrome apps you can download, no need to purchase one
Just came across your channel and love your teaching style. I'm working on the Margaritaville song. I'm so new that this feels impossible, but I'll keep trying lol Does anyone know what strum pattern Lauren is doing with the chord progression. I'm trying the G chord progression and I think she is doing up strums but I'm not positive. Maybe she's doing DDU DDU on each chord?
Thank you Lauren! really appreciate your response from a year old video. That's pretty great. I am 57 years old and giving it a go. I will definitely sign up for your online classes as soon as I get my feet under me and feel I can go to the next step.
I think this lesson is really going to help me Lauren. I practice about an hour a day changing chords and different strumming patterns and look forward to it. Today, however, I was slow and couldn’t get it together. Maybe I just need a day of break? 🤔🤓
Lauren, what's the best strumming pattern to use on the song by pearl jam LAST KISS? Also love 60s music could you do Richie Valens song OH,DONNA,LOVE THAT SONG,THANK YOU!
Glad I found your channel and I love the chord progressions. But where can I find your strumming patterns, because the strumming seems to be a big part of the beautiful music.

You're great a teacher, please continue
Thank you, I will
Nice one thanks
please illustrate the most common strumming patterns
Thanks ✌🌈
Yep, search Lauren Bateman strumming and you will find some great videos.
@@LaurenBateman ok
Thanks🙏✌🏽
Well done!
Thank you!
Like so many songs that can be played with these chord progressions that just fit together in their respective keys it is worthwhile if beginning guitar players, and I am one, check out some videos on the circle of 5ths as you can see and begin to understand the various keys and the chords in them, major and minor and how these simple chord progressions form for each key.Yes its music theory but interesting and helpful once you start to understand it.
this is really helpful thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you! This is great!
You're welcome!
I'm so new that this feels impossible, but I'll keep trying lol
Does anyone know what strum pattern Lauren is doing with the chord progression. I'm trying the G chord progression and I think she is doing up strums but I'm not positive. Maybe she's doing DDU DDU on each chord?
Hi Phil, I put notes for these lesson up on my website and I list the strumming patterns. Go check it out: www.laurenbateman.com/songs
Thank you Lauren! really appreciate your response from a year old video. That's pretty great. I am 57 years old and giving it a go. I will definitely sign up for your online classes as soon as I get my feet under me and feel I can go to the next step.
Thank you so much. I've played for an embarrassingly long time and never put this together.
You're very welcome!
Thank you so much for this gift
You're welcome
I think this lesson is really going to help me Lauren. I practice about an hour a day changing chords and different strumming patterns and look forward to it.
Today, however, I was slow and couldn’t get it together.
Maybe I just need a day of break? 🤔🤓
It can happen. It's always a back and forth process
Let the magic begin!
Yeah!
Good stuff!
Thank you
Nice work buddy.
Thanks!

Glad I found your channel and I love the chord progressions. But where can I find your strumming patterns, because the strumming seems to be a big part of the beautiful music.
