Good video. MPS stood for multi program mode. If I'm not mistaken, the x700 was the first camera with both program mode and aperture priority mode as well as TTL flash mode. It was a very popular camera in it's days and won several awards. It looks to me as if the motordrive coupling screw is not the original one (but it obviously works correct...)

Thanks for another great video. Picked up a descendant of this camera a couple of weeks ago, the 7000i. Autofocus and all the toys but let down by poor grade plastics that are now falling apart.

Hi Andrew, thanks for your kind words, I much prefer the metal bodied cameras, the 80's went plastic crazy, have you tried film through it?, early autofocus, revolutionary...

Don't those Minoltas have the leaky capacitors.

Hi, you are absolutely correct, the X700 being the worst to repair as it needs 2 capacitors replaced, the x500 and x300 only need one, found behind the baseplate, the x500 is surely enough of a camera to satisfy any photographers needs.....

It's an easy enough fix if you have one of these cameras and want to take the effort to keep it going. There's two on the X700, and replacements cost around a dollar each. No biggie.
All you need is a soldering iron and some basic tools to get the camera apart.

I had an X-570 years ago and very much enjoyed it. If I recall correctly, the X-500/570 lacks program mode and provides match-diode metering in manual mode. Are these the only differences versus the X-700? If one is more likely to use manual mode than program mode, is there any reason to prefer the X-700 over the 500/570?

Hi, I agree with your conclusion, the X500/X570 is a more user friendly model, it would be my choice too....

Okay, another question where I haven't put 2 and 2 together. With film cameras, is exposure compensation specifically just for aperture priority or did it come in for AP and then hang around for SP as well ? Is it intrinsically linked or are there non-AP/SP cameras with EC; presumably not as you could shoot with faster/slower film ? Is this a chicken or an egg question or are they not related ?

Hi, exposure compensation dials are found on cameras that feature aperture priority, shutter priority and program mode
There is no use for them on manual exposure cameras as exposure compensation can be applied via the aperture ring or the shutter speed selector
Shutter priority was the first type of semi auto feature introduced in the 1960's, due to mechanical shutters
Aperture priority was introduced in the 1970's and was possible by electronically timed shutters usually of the stepless variety
Program mode appeared in the late 1970's
Exposure compensation can apply to individual shots, for a whole film it is easier to adjust the ISO setting
It is also possible to push/pull film during the development process
Exposure meters are calibrated for mid tones, so whites appear grey, and blacks appear grey, experience will teach you when you need to over/under expose
Snow is a good example, if shot at the exposure suggested by the meter it will come out murky and dull, overexpose by 2 stops, +2 on an exposure dial and it will come out white
I guess you head is spinning by now, I am working on a series of photography basics that will explain this in some detail
Hope this helps, you know where I am!

@@thephotographersbag Thanks for the info. I was really only looking to satisfy my knowledge gap over whether EC specifically came in with AP as a way to compensate the exposure as you didn't have the ability to change the shutter speed, as in manual.
Errr .... so when did EC dials come in and was it linked to the advent of AP cameras ?🤔🤷‍♂

@@iainmc9859 Hi, I would think that it was introduced with shutter priority automation, the exact model of camera seems to be unknown, sometime in the 1960's, so the simple answer to your question is no, IMHO, lol

@@thephotographersbag Cheers mate. Its got me intrigued. I'll be trawling the internet to find the first camera with EC 🤔
