Hi Russell I'm in NZ and we're in lockdown at the moment. The one difficulty I face using zoom is that one of my students doesn't seem to be able to have remote control. It's not on the tool bar at the top of the screen for him,. All my other students have no difficulty and when I go to access remote control, it's always there. Hoping you may be able to help me. I have totally relied on you handy videos to master zoom. Thanks.
That second button that you clicked, optimize video, allows the student's video not to be choppy when they watch it on your screen. Sometimes when the students view it, it doesn't play smoothly.
This answered several burning questions I had, Russell. THANK YOU! Like the function about handing over control to individual students on Zoom and then taking it back. I'll definitely be trying that one out this week. And the thing about playing videos was great, too. I need to try it. I tried playing a video on Zoom last year during lockdown, but I really didn't know what I was doing, so I probably didn't tick the right boxes in Zoom. My students said it didn't work and so in a panic, I cut and paste the link to UA-cam and put it in the chat in Zoom. Then I left them to look at it and joined them again a few minutes later. Thanks Russell. I've been working through a number of these videos, but found the above one really helped me solve some problems I was having. I can imagine that a lot of people find screen sharing difficult at first. It's definitely the right approach to look at what goes wrong with Zoom for teachers. This is the thing that costs us money, so I'm sure you're saving people money!

A really useful video as always, Russell. I had a Zoom lesson on Monday with one student. Later this afternoon I have 3 students in the lesson so it will be a new experience. Your Flipped Classroom course was excellent preparation.
Thanks for making the videos! I've only used Zoom a few score times, and only a dozen teaching chances so far, so I may be wrong ... You don't need to cede control for students to annotate. Unless you've configured no annotation allowed, students can annotate, possibly simultaneously, automatically in different colors. Better in a small class. Worked like a charm yesterday with groups of size 3 and 6.

Adriana, you must understand that when students are in breakout rooms, they can only share what they have open on their computers. So they need to have everything read to share before they go in the breakout room.

Upload a picture into the profile section and then it will use that picture when you have not got your camera on. You can also role over your name in the participants list and change your name. Change your email address for your name and then it won't appear anymore.

I am a one-on-one tutor. I like to see my student’s work on a whiteboard (mathematics), and when he makes a mistake, I like to write on the same whiteboard and correct his mistake. Can this be done? Sincerely, S. Feng
yes, you can even use the whiteboard in Zoom. 1) You could share your whiteboard and then get the student to annote on it. You must give them permission to do this. 2) a simpler way is to allow them to screen share and then they open up the whiteboard and they can work on their sums..since they will be screen sharing you will see everything they do.
I don't think so in Zoom. You can share either the whiteboard or a .ppt. You can share a whole screen which might include a separate digital whiteboard as well as .ppt but not the in-build Zoom whiteboard.

Thanks Russell, I have a conundrum for you that I don't think at the present time can be solved. I am a dancing teacher and have since lockdown been teaching my tap and line dance sessions through Zoom where all the participants can interact with each other. The problem comes when demonstrating with music and my movements and the music are not in sync with one another ;) I have my music linked to the laptop through a line in, I insist they all mute before dancing, thinking of trying to get them to turn off video as well to see if this helps. I also have my ipad set up so I can see what they see. Have you any tips that I might not have thought of, I appreciate this isn't the area of teaching you have been concentrating on. The majority of my participants are seniors and technically challenged ;) I also have to use the microphone form the ipad as when turned on on the laptop I get too much echo. Hi Dianne. Whilst I can't comment on dancing lessons and connecting movements with music, I do know that what is going on is a 'bandwidth' issue. You are using Zoom to connect lots of different videos, both at your end and at their ends. You might need to turn some things off to improve the current time 'lag'. They need to see you, but maybe you don't need to see them. When you are playing the music and teaching them the moves, you might want to see them doing this, but it is slowing things down and making things out of sync. An alternative would be to record yourself - with the music and dance moves first - and then play this to them, rather than sharing your video live - share a pre-recorded video, then have their windows open so you can see what are doing. Just some ideas there. Russell.

@@ttvRussell Hi Russell as promised an update, I had them well almost all of them mute and stop video, quite a few said there was a vast improvement. I personally thought it was much better, yes there is still a time lag but not quite so much, I noticed the speed of the dance is also dependant on how much lag there is....the slower the movements the less lag, which in a way makes a lot of sense to me. Have you tried Devtendo.com? It enables you to record your meetings even as a participant. You can share the video with your students for later viewing and students can also record it for self-study. It's free.
Thanks for sharing this helpful information. I want to know how to allow multiple students to share. I need to do a virtual test where all my class log on to a test portal and share their screen at the same time with me without being able to see each other’s screen. Is that possible?
You can give permission to all your students to screen share but they can't all do it at the same time. You would only be able to see one student's screen at any give time.
Dear Russell, I'm a beginner at Zoom. I prefer to share the whole screen in order to jump from screen to screen in the visual state. Also, I need a whiteboard. For that purpose, I use my iPad because of shaky hands to draw with the mouse. My question. How to project an iPad screen on the iMac screen in order to draw on it with Apple Pencil.

I do have a question for you: In the last few minutes of this video, there's a background for the Teacher Training Videos covering most of the screen. However, in the lower left corner, there's a small inset view of you speaking (guessing it is being captured from your webcam?) How did you do this in Zoom? I teach an AutoCAD class & last night I used Zoom for the first time. The class went pretty well. I used screen share with AutoCAD on the screen for most of the class. I did come to a point though where I needed to spend 6-7 minutes explaining a new concept to the class (so essentially I would just be talking ... not doing anything in AutoCAD). I found myself saying to my students: "Ok, this is probably going to be a little boring because I need to speak with you for a few minutes". Using Zoom, the students could hear me speaking, but on the screen they saw a static picture of what was on my AutoCAD screen. I know I could turn off the screen sharing & then I guess they would see me as I'm speaking (being captured by my webcam). However, I don't want my video picture filling up the students' complete screens (I admit I'm a little self conscious about appearing "So Big" on the screen). I would much rather have my video as a "small inset at a corner of the AutoCAD screen" similar to what you've done in the last few minutes of this video. Any help with this would be appreciated. I think you are getting confused between when I am recording in Camtasia to make the video using Camtasia and when I am working in Zoom. I often turn off the video when working in Zoom but I do think you can choose a few layouts that limit the size. I am going to look into this and see if I can work it out, It is a good question. If you let your students open up their cams and then choose gallery view, it wont' be so bad. I am putting up my zoom videos here. I have tried to change the video and audio settings during my class presentations but no changes, students still have issues viewing the information. The images and video recording are still blurry

I have saw someone did a zoom presentation, instead of just sharing the screen from his ipad notability app like normal screen sharing way. He has made the screen sharing appear like his virtual background and run us through the noteability apps. Do you know what is the feature called and how he did it?
Kevin, he was using a screen green. It is a setting in Zoom. I don't use it but I do use green screen in my videos. Look for Green Screen Zoom in youTube and it should come up.

Yes, even with a PowerPoint open on your screen, you should still be able to be in the corner of the screen. Minimize Zoom. Remember that participants can still see you and change the size of your camera / video window themselves to make it suitable for them. Play around with the video options - side by side view or have speaker view only for presentations. I think when I use zoom pro all my students can annotate easily without any problem and without me doing the give control part, and the recording option can record the entire session in video format which is editable .. so I think maybe I’m watching an old video perhaps
Hi Sameera. Yes you can do this. Students don't have to be given control, if you enable the screen sharing option in settings beforehand. Zoom will record the entire session, but won't record the break out rooms. However, they can record the break out room session locally including when they share their screen. One issue I’ve encountered with shared screens in Zoom is that annotation done in other software, such as the slide annotation in PowerPointt, can cause freezes and crashes. I was hoping to be able to scroll back and forth to different notes I’d written in Xournal, but Xournal freezes when I use it with Zoom screen share. Have you encountered this issue,and if so do you have some way of working around it. I’ve been using OBS virtual cam to deliver this content, but some students complain that the images they see are fuzzy.
Steven, I think you know more than I do. My only advice is that when you screen share, turn off all CAMS and that way you are maximising the possibility that the screen won't freeze. Sorry I can't help you more.
Thanks Russell. I just got a call to make a presentation with video and it looks like it's a go. My question is if I have an audience of a few dozen people, can they ask questions "live"? Can every see everyone else? Sounds like a recipe for disaster with people all trying to talk at once. So, do they submit questions in writing? And, should it be a regular zoom session or a webinar? Which is better.
Hi Roger. Good question. In a 'meeting' you can use the chat window. In a 'webinar' (pro version +) you can have additional tools for virtually raising a hand or reacting to the presentation. There are options for every participant in how they view the other particiapnts. A video toolbar, which can be dragged across the screen if needed, has options of minimizing, showing only those with videos, or hiding those without a video etc. If you have someone else hosting and fielding the questions in the chat box, that helps. This is more commong with a webinar set up. But I think with a dozen people you should be able to manage on your own. Good luck!
Yes, you can. There are two windows - chat and the manage participants window - although these can be locked together if preferred. As a host you would generally need to have both showing. When you share your screen of window these might briefly disappear but can be brought back using the bottom toolbar in Zoom.
Thanks Russell for the informative video. Is there anyway to copy and paste to the Zoom Whiteboard from another document using something like the Windows Snipping Tool? Any insights would be greatly appreciated.
Hi JS. I don't think you can copy and paste directly onto the Zoom whiteboard in that way. The annotation tools that are within Zoom don't include an upload image from computer. A third party whiteboard might offer this feature and you would share that whiteboard screen. But you can save an image, including what has been taken with snipping tool and share that in the chat window. Hope that helps a little.
Thank you Russell. Your tutorials are very helpful. Is there is a way to record a Zoom webinar where it shows all panel members and a shared screen simultaneously. I have attempted a variety of ways, but always end up with a speaker & shared screen, just the gallery, just the panel, etc. The additional panel members are sign language interpreters, so they don't speak (which triggers the speaker view) I have the webinar settings set to record everything. Just curious if this is a bit beyond what Zoom can do or if I just need to transfer videos to editing software and combine them? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Hi Kristin. Firstly, thank you for your kind comment. An interesting point about sign language interpreters not speaking, just watching and maybe gesticulating. In my experience, the host can record locally to their computer and whatever view they have (such as gallery view with shared screen) that is what should be rendered by Zoom. I have seen webinars on pro accounts that record up to 8 different viewpoints, including gallery view, speaker views and shared screen (only), so I know Zoom can produce these separate versions of the same session. Hi Evridiki. Wow. Think Jing is still going, although it has been renamed as Capture, I think. When you share your screen in Zoom, there should be a window to the right of 'share (whole) screen'. It didn't work again. It must be something related to my windows version because I cannot see the virtual background pics I see at some others zoom either.
Actually, you CAN edit videos that you record (screen capture, as you call it). I did this often, because the recording is saved as an MP4 file. Just pop that recording into iMovie (or similar video editor) and you have full edit capabilities. The most recent online lesson I taught ("Google Sheets Makeovers & Magic" -- ua-cam.com/video/G1YfJtdng1g/v-deo.html) involved my editing our several pieces during which attendees didn't understand a concept and we took extra time to explain. That explanation was not germane to the recording, so I simply just removed that clip. I hope this helps.

Hi Russell, I'm not sure if you'll see this Q on an older video, but here goes! First of all, thanks for all your help in the last 18 months or so. I'm a CELTA trainer and your videos have been amazingly helpful! I'm about to start another course after a break. When I used to screen share on Zoom, I could see all the Word documents/slides I wanted to share and just clicked on the right one. Now, in the Zoom window when I click on screen share, I can only see, e.g. the box for Word and it shows how many documents I have open, but doesn't show each document individually! Where can I change this in settings? Thanks so much!
I am not sure that it is a setting. Normally when you screen share Zoom shows you each application that you have open and shows you the current tab in that application that you have active. So for example if you have 6 tabs in Google Chrome open, it only shows you the open that is live. You just need to screen share and jump over to the relevant tab.

I just seem to remember before that if I had 4 Microsoft Word documents already open in the background, they each showed as a separate 'icon' in the Zoom window that opens when I clicked on 'share screen'. I could then click on the document I wanted to share. Now, when I click on share screen, I can see only one icon for Microsoft Word with a little number bottom right corner, showing how many docs I have open and I have to click on each one till I get the one I want, so my trainees see this happening. I'll need to show each of these docs in my session. Maybe I just need to organise them beforehand in the order I want to open them. I'll keep playing around. Thanks again!

Hello Russell. I've been playing with the phone as the document camera but lag is an issue. What about using the cell as a second camera, meaning log into the meeting via cell and then either by pinning or another view control, make the cell view large enough for my students to see my demo painting. I know each has to pin the view. I'm not sure if there lag or not. Possibly. Thx again.
It sounds like there could be some connectivity issues, too, here. As you suggest, the main camera - the one you sign into Zoom with as account holder / host - would ideally be the one that shows your painting. You describe your physical set up pretty well, but I can't quite see the final solution. Think we might have started communication on a different video, so can't find my previous responses.
Interesting question, Jean. Breakout rooms are good for assigning one set of students with one picture or photo, and another room with a different one. You could give both before they enter the assigned rooms or give them when you drop in on each room. Thanks for the video Russell. Very informative. I am trying to screen capture a screen share where I watch a youtube video with student. The issue is on the recording playback there are shadows of where the task bars are or have been. They stay there until the bar will have left my screen. Is there anything I can do to stop this happening? Ideally, I want to be able to write on the screen and it appear on the playback. I hope this makes some sense
Hi Paul. What screen capture software are you using? Not quite sure why a 'shadow' is appearing. I use Camtasia, but you are probably using something different to capture the screen share.

Esther, I am not a fan of iPads because they work from apps and these are often cut down versions of the web version of the product. I am sorry but Zoom works best with a laptop.
Great - many thanks. I wish my stranded, coronavirus private students would pluck up the courage to go online to ZOOM or clickmeeting but I think they are terrified. Out of their comfort zone. I'm so bored with students confined to their homes.

My experience working with screen share... the video I played seemed to pause a coupe of times, thus the students may not have enjoyed very well... is it because of my or my students' internet connection? or else?
Probably is. I often ask my students to test their speed. Less than about 20 megs per second could lead to not getting full experience. this test is very good. You really only need to worry about download speed try speedtest.net

Even with the "optimize video box" checked, all background apps and windows closed (working in Windows 10), my video screen turned off, there are times when the UA-cam video I am showing stutters and is jumpy on the displays of some of my participants. Any other setting to check?
Drew, do a speedcheck on speedcheck.net...It could be the speed of your connection but it could also be their connections. I do sometimes have this problem with my students and it is usually a speed issue.
@@ttvRussell In some instances I believe it is their connections. However I now mute my mic and turn off the video. I also use a wired mouse rather than the wireless. All with the normal Zoom stuff of optimize for video.
There is a way, barbara. When you screen share as a host, if you choose side-by-side view then webinar participants who are viewing a shared screen can switch to side-by-side mode. This enables them to see the shared screen alongside either the Speaker View or Gallery View, depending on which view they choose. I'm in NZ and we're in lockdown at the moment. The one difficulty I face using zoom is that one of my students doesn't seem to be able to have remote control. It's not on the tool bar at the top of the screen for him,. All my other students have no difficulty and when I go to access remote control, it's always there. Hoping you may be able to help me. I have totally relied on you handy videos to master zoom. Thanks.
I think you have to make sure you have remote control for students activated in your settings. It may also be that the mobile app does not allow it.
That second button that you clicked, optimize video, allows the student's video not to be choppy when they watch it on your screen. Sometimes when the students view it, it doesn't play smoothly.

This answered several burning questions I had, Russell. THANK YOU! Like the function about handing over control to individual students on Zoom and then taking it back. I'll definitely be trying that one out this week. And the thing about playing videos was great, too. I need to try it. I tried playing a video on Zoom last year during lockdown, but I really didn't know what I was doing, so I probably didn't tick the right boxes in Zoom. My students said it didn't work and so in a panic, I cut and paste the link to UA-cam and put it in the chat in Zoom. Then I left them to look at it and joined them again a few minutes later. Thanks for making the videos! I've only used Zoom a few score times, and only a dozen teaching chances so far, so I may be wrong ... You don't need to cede control for students to annotate. Unless you've configured no annotation allowed, students can annotate, possibly simultaneously, automatically in different colors. Better in a small class. Worked like a charm yesterday with groups of size 3 and 6.

Hello Russell! Can you please teach us 1) How a participant can share their screen, and show it to all the group? And if we use the breakout rooms (for two students), can they share a screen among themselves? Thank you in advance!
Adriana, you must understand that when students are in breakout rooms, they can only share what they have open on their computers. So they need to have everything read to share before they go in the breakout room.

Upload a picture into the profile section and then it will use that picture when you have not got your camera on. You can also role over your name in the participants list and change your name. Change your email address for your name and then it won't appear anymore.

I am a one-on-one tutor. I like to see my student’s work on a whiteboard (mathematics), and when he makes a mistake, I like to write on the same whiteboard and correct his mistake. Can this be done?

yes, you can even use the whiteboard in Zoom. 1) You could share your whiteboard and then get the student to annote on it. You must give them permission to do this. 2) a simpler way is to allow them to screen share and then they open up the whiteboard and they can work on their sums..since they will be screen sharing you will see everything they do.
Can you change the whiteboard to a graph board? To teach math and draw functions?

I don't think so in Zoom. You can share either the whiteboard or a .ppt. You can share a whole screen which might include a separate digital whiteboard as well as .ppt but not the in-build Zoom whiteboard.

Thanks Russell, I have a conundrum for you that I don't think at the present time can be solved. I am a dancing teacher and have since lockdown been teaching my tap and line dance sessions through Zoom where all the participants can interact with each other. The problem comes when demonstrating with music and my movements and the music are not in sync with one another ;) I have my music linked to the laptop through a line in, I insist they all mute before dancing, thinking of trying to get them to turn off video as well to see if this helps. I also have my ipad set up so I can see what they see. Have you any tips that I might not have thought of, I appreciate this isn't the area of teaching you have been concentrating on. The majority of my participants are seniors and technically challenged ;) I also have to use the microphone form the ipad as when turned on on the laptop I get too much echo. Hi Dianne. Whilst I can't comment on dancing lessons and connecting movements with music, I do know that what is going on is a 'bandwidth' issue. You are using Zoom to connect lots of different videos, both at your end and at their ends. You might need to turn some things off to improve the current time 'lag'. They need to see you, but maybe you don't need to see them. When you are playing the music and teaching them the moves, you might want to see them doing this, but it is slowing things down and making things out of sync. An alternative would be to record yourself - with the music and dance moves first - and then play this to them, rather than sharing your video live - share a pre-recorded video, then have their windows open so you can see what are doing. Just some ideas there. Russell.

@@ttvRussell Hi Russell as promised an update, I had them well almost all of them mute and stop video, quite a few said there was a vast improvement. I personally thought it was much better, yes there is still a time lag but not quite so much, I noticed the speed of the dance is also dependant on how much lag there is....the slower the movements the less lag, which in a way makes a lot of sense to me. Yes, there is in settings before you create the room in fact you can also set it as you actually create the room
Have you tried Devtendo.com? It enables you to record your meetings even as a participant. You can share the video with your students for later viewing and students can also record it for self-study. It's free.

You can give permission to all your students to screen share but they can't all do it at the same time. You would only be able to see one student's screen at any give time.
Dear Russell, I'm a beginner at Zoom. I prefer to share the whole screen in order to jump from screen to screen in the visual state. Also, I need a whiteboard. For that purpose, I use my iPad because of shaky hands to draw with the mouse. My question. How to project an iPad screen on the iMac screen in order to draw on it with Apple Pencil.

Russell, thank you so much! Your videos are very helpful. I do have a question for you: In the last few minutes of this video, there's a background for the Teacher Training Videos covering most of the screen. However, in the lower left corner, there's a small inset view of you speaking (guessing it is being captured from your webcam?) How did you do this in Zoom? I teach an AutoCAD class & last night I used Zoom for the first time. The class went pretty well. I used screen share with AutoCAD on the screen for most of the class. I did come to a point though where I needed to spend 6-7 minutes explaining a new concept to the class (so essentially I would just be talking ... not doing anything in AutoCAD). I found myself saying to my students: "Ok, this is probably going to be a little boring because I need to speak with you for a few minutes". Using Zoom, the students could hear me speaking, but on the screen they saw a static picture of what was on my AutoCAD screen. I know I could turn off the screen sharing & then I guess they would see me as I'm speaking (being captured by my webcam). However, I don't want my video picture filling up the students' complete screens (I admit I'm a little self conscious about appearing "So Big" on the screen). I would much rather have my video as a "small inset at a corner of the AutoCAD screen" similar to what you've done in the last few minutes of this video. Any help with this would be appreciated. Thank you :)
I think you are getting confused between when I am recording in Camtasia to make the video using Camtasia and when I am working in Zoom. I often turn off the video when working in Zoom but I do think you can choose a few layouts that limit the size. I am going to look into this and see if I can work it out, It is a good question. If you let your students open up their cams and then choose gallery view, it wont' be so bad. I am putting up my zoom videos here. I have tried to change the video and audio settings during my class presentations but no changes, students still have issues viewing the information. The images and video recording are still blurry

Kevin, he was using a screen green. It is a setting in Zoom. I don't use it but I do use green screen in my videos. Look for Green Screen Zoom in youTube and it should come up.

Yes, even with a PowerPoint open on your screen, you should still be able to be in the corner of the screen. Minimize Zoom. Remember that participants can still see you and change the size of your camera / video window themselves to make it suitable for them. Play around with the video options - side by side view or have speaker view only for presentations. I think when I use zoom pro all my students can annotate easily without any problem and without me doing the give control part, and the recording option can record the entire session in video format which is editable .. so I think maybe I’m watching an old video perhaps
Hi Sameera. Yes you can do this. Students don't have to be given control, if you enable the screen sharing option in settings beforehand. Zoom will record the entire session, but won't record the break out rooms. However, they can record the break out room session locally including when they share their screen. One issue I’ve encountered with shared screens in Zoom is that annotation done in other software, such as the slide annotation in PowerPointt, can cause freezes and crashes. I was hoping to be able to scroll back and forth to different notes I’d written in Xournal, but Xournal freezes when I use it with Zoom screen share. Have you encountered this issue,and if so do you have some way of working around it. I’ve been using OBS virtual cam to deliver this content, but some students complain that the images they see are fuzzy.
Steven, I think you know more than I do. My only advice is that when you screen share, turn off all CAMS and that way you are maximising the possibility that the screen won't freeze. Sorry I can't help you more.
Thanks Russell. I just got a call to make a presentation with video and it looks like it's a go. My question is if I have an audience of a few dozen people, can they ask questions "live"? Can every see everyone else? Sounds like a recipe for disaster with people all trying to talk at once. So, do they submit questions in writing? And, should it be a regular zoom session or a webinar? Which is better.
Hi Roger. Good question. In a 'meeting' you can use the chat window. In a 'webinar' (pro version +) you can have additional tools for virtually raising a hand or reacting to the presentation. There are options for every participant in how they view the other particiapnts. A video toolbar, which can be dragged across the screen if needed, has options of minimizing, showing only those with videos, or hiding those without a video etc. If you have someone else hosting and fielding the questions in the chat box, that helps. This is more commong with a webinar set up. But I think with a dozen people you should be able to manage on your own. Good luck!

Yes, you can. There are two windows - chat and the manage participants window - although these can be locked together if preferred. As a host you would generally need to have both showing. When you share your screen of window these might briefly disappear but can be brought back using the bottom toolbar in Zoom.

Hi JS. I don't think you can copy and paste directly onto the Zoom whiteboard in that way. The annotation tools that are within Zoom don't include an upload image from computer. A third party whiteboard might offer this feature and you would share that whiteboard screen. But you can save an image, including what has been taken with snipping tool and share that in the chat window. Hope that helps a little.
Thank you Russell. Your tutorials are very helpful. Is there is a way to record a Zoom webinar where it shows all panel members and a shared screen simultaneously. I have attempted a variety of ways, but always end up with a speaker & shared screen, just the gallery, just the panel, etc. The additional panel members are sign language interpreters, so they don't speak (which triggers the speaker view) I have the webinar settings set to record everything. Just curious if this is a bit beyond what Zoom can do or if I just need to transfer videos to editing software and combine them? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Hi Kristin. Firstly, thank you for your kind comment. An interesting point about sign language interpreters not speaking, just watching and maybe gesticulating. In my experience, the host can record locally to their computer and whatever view they have (such as gallery view with shared screen) that is what should be rendered by Zoom. I have seen webinars on pro accounts that record up to 8 different viewpoints, including gallery view, speaker views and shared screen (only), so I know Zoom can produce these separate versions of the same session. I would also like to be able to use a green screen to have a video or picture as a background. It is not supported by my computer.

Hi Evridiki. Wow. Think Jing is still going, although it has been renamed as Capture, I think. When you share your screen in Zoom, there should be a window to the right of 'share (whole) screen'. It didn't work again. It must be something related to my windows version because I cannot see the virtual background pics I see at some others zoom either.
Actually, you CAN edit videos that you record (screen capture, as you call it). I did this often, because the recording is saved as an MP4 file. Just pop that recording into iMovie (or similar video editor) and you have full edit capabilities. The most recent online lesson I taught ("Google Sheets Makeovers & Magic" -- ua-cam.com/video/G1YfJtdng1g/v-deo.html) involved my editing our several pieces during which attendees didn't understand a concept and we took extra time to explain. That explanation was not germane to the recording, so I simply just removed that clip. I hope this helps.
Larry of course you can do that. Great idea Larry but you can't do it in Zoom. You have to save the video and take into video editor. Good post and good point

Hi Russell, I'm not sure if you'll see this Q on an older video, but here goes! First of all, thanks for all your help in the last 18 months or so. I'm a CELTA trainer and your videos have been amazingly helpful! I'm about to start another course after a break. When I used to screen share on Zoom, I could see all the Word documents/slides I wanted to share and just clicked on the right one. Now, in the Zoom window when I click on screen share, I can only see, e.g. the box for Word and it shows how many documents I have open, but doesn't show each document individually! Where can I change this in settings? Thanks so much!
I am not sure that it is a setting. Normally when you screen share Zoom shows you each application that you have open and shows you the current tab in that application that you have active. So for example if you have 6 tabs in Google Chrome open, it only shows you the open that is live. You just need to screen share and jump over to the relevant tab.

I just seem to remember before that if I had 4 Microsoft Word documents already open in the background, they each showed as a separate 'icon' in the Zoom window that opens when I clicked on 'share screen'. I could then click on the document I wanted to share. Now, when I click on share screen, I can see only one icon for Microsoft Word with a little number bottom right corner, showing how many docs I have open and I have to click on each one till I get the one I want, so my trainees see this happening. I'll need to show each of these docs in my session. Maybe I just need to organise them beforehand in the order I want to open them. I'll keep playing around. Thanks again!

Great stuff, Silvia. You can now do this within Zoom during a session. Although there is a enable / disable feature in settings, too.
Hello Russell. I've been playing with the phone as the document camera but lag is an issue. What about using the cell as a second camera, meaning log into the meeting via cell and then either by pinning or another view control, make the cell view large enough for my students to see my demo painting. I know each has to pin the view. I'm not sure if there lag or not. Possibly. Thx again.
It sounds like there could be some connectivity issues, too, here. As you suggest, the main camera - the one you sign into Zoom with as account holder / host - would ideally be the one that shows your painting. You describe your physical set up pretty well, but I can't quite see the final solution. Think we might have started communication on a different video, so can't find my previous responses.
If you want to give a spot the difference how do you manage to give two different pictures in a pair, pl?
Interesting question, Jean. Breakout rooms are good for assigning one set of students with one picture or photo, and another room with a different one. You could give both before they enter the assigned rooms or give them when you drop in on each room. I am trying to screen capture a screen share where I watch a youtube video with student. The issue is on the recording playback there are shadows of where the task bars are or have been. They stay there until the bar will have left my screen.
Is there anything I can do to stop this happening? Ideally, I want to be able to write on the screen and it appear on the playback.

Hi Paul. What screen capture software are you using? Not quite sure why a 'shadow' is appearing. I use Camtasia, but you are probably using something different to capture the screen share.

I’m trying to screen share a presentation but need to see all the students too for their reactions. What do you recommend? How do you use 2 devices so that one screen shows what you’re presenting and the other device can show the students?
That is hard. When you screen share you only have limited numbers of cameras on the screen. I tend to jump between screen share and talking on webcam.

Esther, I am not a fan of iPads because they work from apps and these are often cut down versions of the web version of the product. I am sorry but Zoom works best with a laptop.
Great - many thanks. I wish my stranded, coronavirus private students would pluck up the courage to go online to ZOOM or clickmeeting but I think they are terrified. Out of their comfort zone. I'm so bored with students confined to their homes.

My experience working with screen share... the video I played seemed to pause a coupe of times, thus the students may not have enjoyed very well... is it because of my or my students' internet connection? or else?
Probably is. I often ask my students to test their speed. Less than about 20 megs per second could lead to not getting full experience. this test is very good. You really only need to worry about download speed try speedtest.net
Your videos have been very enlightening! I am planning to use a document camera to play with live sessions (demonstrating art). The camera has audio, it'll be connected to my Mac. Any advice?
In theory it should work. You should be able to screen share it.
I am a co-host and am the one to share UA-cam videos from my computer. Even with the "optimize video box" checked, all background apps and windows closed (working in Windows 10), my video screen turned off, there are times when the UA-cam video I am showing stutters and is jumpy on the displays of some of my participants. Any other setting to check?
Drew, do a speedcheck on speedcheck.net...It could be the speed of your connection but it could also be their connections. I do sometimes have this problem with my students and it is usually a speed issue.
@@ttvRussell In some instances I believe it is their connections. However I now mute my mic and turn off the video. I also use a wired mouse rather than the wireless. All with the normal Zoom stuff of optimize for video.

Can you see your students when you screen share as a host? I need to see my students as I am teaching.
There is a way, barbara. When you screen share as a host, if you choose side-by-side view then webinar participants who are viewing a shared screen can switch to side-by-side mode. This enables them to see the shared screen alongside either the Speaker View or Gallery View, depending on which view they choose.
