' We're the Sweeney son, and we haven't had any dinner ! ' What a line, magnificent !! Summed up the whole show really. A well written script with little touches of humour, full on English style action sequences epitomising the subtitle of The Flying Squad. A must see show of the 1970's, still holding up today.
God,it was unbeatable! Never been anything better since! Every episode was a classic. Premium television days those were, the licence worth every penny.
Best line was when Regan and Carter took ex lag Eddie Monk, who had been on the lash after a pools win and being blackmailed by ex associates, home to his worried missus . When she opens the front door to see Eddie propped up Regan utters the immortal line-" it's alright love he's only pissed". Truly Shakespearean. Best police series ever and will always be.
After all these years still best old bill show ever. Class.
quality British television at its best. those were the days.
ATVmidlands uk
John Thaw. The undisputed Guvnor.
Cigarettes, booze, sexism,Ford Consul and a good kickin'.....and no political correctness in sight.....God,i miss those days! x
Great upload thanks.
Me too most TV is crap these days...
john thaw is a true icon true legend i love him much as i love my father......R.I.P
My dad was in the flying squad - he said that the Sweeney is exactly like it used to be. Even the guns, they used to book them out and just carry them about - scary. But those were the proper days! Wicked
Sweeney Todd! Flying squad, just the greatest cop show of all time,
ahhhhh the good old days, proper tv.
Dennis Waterman's best role in my opinion
best police drama ever...
Unbeatable detective series.
Agree 100% it really did pull no punches! I loved every second of it.
Best Cop show ever made!
Only the British could make something as gritty and badarse as this.
I got the entire Professionals collection on dvd and sometimes its almost camp whereas The Sweeney still stands up today.
Watching this makes you relaise how much 'Life on Mars' was based on it!
Just proves in reality they are ACTOOOORS
My favourite TV cop show.... EVER! John Thaw totally owned his role, with terrific support from Waterman. So glad they're re-running the shows on ITV 4.
The ULTIMATE 70s drama.
Loved the sweeney when I was growing up John Thaw is a legend!! always remember an episode where some brass was topless and shook her bristols at Thaw saying "go on have a good look" me and my mate thought this well funny at school the day after (i was only 9 at the time)
Still the best British TV cop show even after more than forty-five years. Brilliantly written and acted it's hard to believe that the same channel that made it now makes such crap as love Island and I'm a celebrity get me out here . ITV really has gone down hill over the years...
THE LATE GREAT JOHN THAW RULES.
Brilliant writers, first class actors, always remember Dennis waterman was a great runner ❤❤❤❤
That's what I needed! Thank you!
Sheer punching slags, busting blags, busty barmaids, no-nonsense drinking joy!
Love that CSP episode too! But it did prove that 70's cop shows were more exciting than the ones from the 90's ;-) I think it was spot on.
I watch this TV show when I was 9,and all I have to say is REMARKABLE!
i was about 8,9 or 10 ...felt bit grown-up getting to stay-up late to watch this
The 2nd part which for some reason isnt here, is very sad as i remember.
Dennis gets very upset talking about his mate Jhon as i remember.
And i haven't seen it since it was first shown.
But when Dennis gets upset, it even made me well up a bit.
Lost friendships, sad.
cant beat the sweeney
This better then the movie.
please, please, post part two !
Amazing tv serie
the sweeney was way ahead of its time i liked D way they didnt always get their suspects and sometimes D robbers got away.
Marvellous iconic entertainment
Bril series!. Sad thing is these days Coppers aren't allowed to be like that anymore!.
"You're nicked!" SMACK!! HA! I have the "REGAN" movie on video :)
yes they do in the new box set :)
They should have done a Must See TV special on The Professionals with Richard Hammond hosting it.
I had a MK1 granada in the 80's. I wrote "SWEENEY" on the front mudflaps but I spelt it wrong. SWEENY ! whoops.
great car which drank petrol like Regan drank scotch !
Loved the line..
You nicked you slaaaag...and hes just a back street slaaaag...but it's not shown now...
JOHN THAW THE SWEENEY IS 10/10
RAY WINSTONE THE SWEENEY IS 5/10
BRILL
I'm Regan flying squad Arthur Dale your under arrest Legend
Sat in a BIG Granada 'Obs Car' near a schoolyard where leggy young girls played netball. Honest hardnut Regan to wet Carter: "Whoever invented the gymslip should get a bloody medal!"
Shocked Carter: "Here hold on Guv..."
Blunt Regan: "Shut it!"
Brilliant show!! Whats with Waterman's teeth tho???
52 Episodes. probably about half a dozen poor ones- the rest still stand up today
OI, leave it out my son - any more of this caper and you'll be back on the streets, directing traffic and wearing a tall hat.
Bleedin woodentop.
Great Clips - Somewhat spoiled by the Squeeze background music.
PROPER !!!g
Well they did have real police advisors on the series.
oh why no part 2 bumber
GEEZERS !!!g
TRIPE HOUND ! Cyril reckons you've been paying him with snide fivers? You've blown it sunbeam - no more quick friction for you...
at 5.00 geezer from Brush Strokes!
In the era when many workers were still paid is cash, armed robberies were more common compared to now. The Sweeney did draw arms when needed, after signing for them and the ammo. Since the late 80's British armed police are almost exclusively specialist firearms officers not detectives who sometimes carried revolvers. Most criminals used swan off shotguns rather than military style guns. The pistols used by them were often from WW2, captured or 'lost' pistols.
My favourite episodes were Nightmare, Pay Off and Taste of Fear....
Check Dennis's new nashers out.
look slag i don't care who you have in your bed-but don't try and run your numbers on me"...john thaw was born to be Regan. Him and Waterman just total class.
Makes the cop shows of today look like what they are- total crap.
The Sweeney still numero uno.
Inspector Morse
i'd say the recent Sweeney film was made to order by Nick Love after the total flop of his film Outlaw, same with his remake of The Firm. Both were lazy and predictable and didn't have the love that went into The Business. It would be hard to do justice to the original series but the film just failed completely. Ray Winstone left the production early on and had to be persuaded back.
@@toddblanks I felt the same, it was never going to more than a tribute to the series, with very little of the spirit of it. Fairplay for getting through half of it.
Where's the second part?
I'm looking for that too.
"Nicked"? I guess that's British slang for "arrested", like how some of us Yanks would say "pinched"?
Seems funny that the police ' nicked ' villains - for ' nicking' (stealing).
@@electricleg207That's because they end up in The Nick, e.g. Wandsworth.
HAS ANYONE GOT TIME FOR A RATEPAYER? Gordon Bennett, what you did, what you are turns my stomach. Every copper on every beat has to live you down. You'll be better off guarding some old boiler's jewellery in the South of France because you've got about as much bottle as Jimmy Dancer.
Jack Regan's character reminds one strongly of 'Guv' in Life on Mars, no?
Hardly surprising, as Gene Hunt ("Guv") was based upon him!
Your Nicked! get me Govern! thanks for the compilation! ROFL
So where's Part Two Guv ?
@johncopey i met someone who knew thaw and they said he was a terrible worrier who took life very serious-hence the premature ageing
Look at Dennis's "Hampteads" f00kin hilarious :D
He looks like Mike Smash !!
whats happened to waterman's teeth these days???
I hear that your good mate Hyphen Jones is prone to calling you.CUDDLES?
In a bare knuckle fight between you and Bob Hargreaves my money's on the bottler !
get your trousers on your nicked
I knew it - selection board? You've got 5th floor written all over you.
ON YER BIKE and count yer paperclips.
I'm utterly and abjectly pissed off with this little lot.
Is this realistic? Shoot-outs in London?
Ben A Yes, very realistic as most events were based on real life incidents & both cops & villains. The Flying Squad in those days were primarily in the main AFO detectives, who carried guns on duty as the crimes they dealt with consisted of armed robberies & gangland crimes. Later on in late 70s D11 The Firearms Department assisted the Squad in chasing heavily armed criminals, whom the Flying Squad couldn't capture on their own.
You're off your chump!
You may put the time in at Pop's gym but you couldn't even go two rounds with Frank "paperclips" Haskins. When I've finished throwing alsatians around and sorting out gypo's with ear-rings I coming around to have a word in your shell-like.
@twoface0 Danny Dyers plays Jack Carter .
What's up with the guv? Hang about!
Dennis needs to sort out those gnashers pronto.
That's unless he's taken up boxing again and he's wearing a gum shield ?
They must be NHS dentures....... or he's wearing them in for his grandad ......groan......that sounded like one of Eric Morecombe's jokes ( arguably the unfunniest man ever to grace British t.v. screens ). Anyway, as Jack would say....ON YER BIKE !!!!!!!
Waterman rumoured to have bought at auction Dick Emery's naughty Vicar's false teeth which were original used by Alec Guiness in The Lady Killers
My God. Dennis Waterman has has a face lift, I'd say, and it looks ridiculous. Not so tough after all.
I like Yu tube
Shut it
Shame the real-life Sweeney were just another bunch of bent coppers!
police practice has changed little from my experience, still thugs who like violence with the comfort of knowing they face no consequences.
MMM, Taking things a little too seriously old boy! I'm commenting on a fictitious television show, try taking life a little less seriously! Karma.
scratchy catte Lol, I think things have changed considerably since the 1970s, starting with the creation of the PACE Act 1984 & the CPS Act 1986 & the reduction of basic authorised firearms officers within the Flying Squad. Different era to today’s world & you’re talking utter tosh. Regan used to beat up suspects & drink casually in his office, two things which would see him sacked or jailed in today’s Met police.

@sussexmews -Quality comment!
There were only three channels when this shite was on, and no Internet or computers.
now with multi-channeled tv and the internet there shite all over the place
Harold Jameson And?? If you didn’t like it, you watched one of the other two. Oh & by the way, this shite was ground-breaking & was made by the same brothers who made the original ‘Italian Job’ film & its held its own over 40 years or so.
some of the episodes were just plain boring.
The Sweeney was crap.
your're nicked!
