  • In this adventure, I go searching for Short-eared Owls. I not only find them, I also share my best tip for finding them! These owls are found, not only in America, but also in Europe, Asia and in many other places around the world. I hope my tip helps you find more owls. This outing takes place in Wyandot County, Ohio, and it was filmed on February 29, 2024. Let's go find some owls! Seriously. "C'mon! Let's Go Birding!"

Short-eared owls are one of my favorite winter birds up here in New England too. Usually I just see them around sunset, but this year I experience them out all late morning and early afternoon. I was puzzled, but I think what you said about them coming out on the first calm day after a lot of wind might be right, because that was the scenario I had going on that day. We had several very windy/rainy days from noreaster. Thanks for shedding some light on that. Nice videos!

Got a tip of about five short eared owls ten minutes from where I live. Big fields with rows upon rows of fence posts. Showed up right at sunset tonight and saw one, but it was pretty dark by then. How long before sunset would you recommend seeing them, we had some decent rain this morning, so would they be more active tomorrow from it? It’s my first time shooting short eared owls, only other ones I’ve ever shot are screech owls, so anyone with tips please let me know! Thanks!

I would go looking the day after bad weather. By bad weather, I mean a hard rain and high wind. The chaos and noise from the storm, I believe, hinders the owls ability to locate prey. Prey, like voles, likely hole up and are not as active. Short-eared Owls are sensitive to wind and foul weather. They shut down as well. A soft rain, in contrast, wouldn't likely cause such a disruption in the owls feeding pattern. If you had a storm this morning, I would go looking this evening, if it's calm again. I'd also head out tomorrow.
As far as how long before sunset to show up - in my recent video they were out between 2:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. The day before that outing, we had hard rain and high wind. I think the owls were out because they shut down during the storm. They were hungry. Usually, they seem to be the most active in that last hour before sunset. But if the wind is over 12 mph, I'd stay home. They don't like to hunt in wind faster than that. Hope I've helped you out. I wish you the best of luck and would love to see your photos!

@@BirdingWithDan Thanks so much for the advice, didn’t have much of a chance to go at a good time today, going to go tomorrow to try and get there about an hour before sunset, and get some shots. Thanks for the advice, I’ve been watching all your videos on them to try and get an idea what I’ll hopefully be working with. Thank you for all the help!

I was just in this area on 3/3/24 and didn't see a single owl. Mind you I did stay by the side of the road. Where did you go to find all of these lovelies? Thanks

There are several large fields of tall grass within the wildlife area, which is over 9,000 acres. It's the same habitat as along that road. I simply roamed on foot and explored some of those fields. Thankfully, owls were there.
