- On this outing, I go looking for Short-eared Owls in one of their Ohio winter spots. It's a cold February day, and the sun is setting. Will any owls show up? There are highs and lows, but the owls come out to play! Filmed on February 24, 2024 in Wyandot County, Ohio.

I just got started with short eared owls . They are seasonal here so I’m planning to work on my photography of them this fall. They do fly erratically! You got some awesome shots!!

We went out a couple of weeks ago in search of our Lifer Short-eared at our local hotspot, but the owls didn't show. I had decided not to try again, as it is a full two hour drive from home, but all your videos reinspired me. We drove down yesterday, and just when I was sure we were going to miss out again, there one was! And another! And another! Five in total!
Awesome! Major congratulations. Yes, sometimes they don't come out until after dark. I can sure understand your initial disappointment. I'm very happy persistence paid off for you Big Time.

How do you know what field to go to, to find owls?
Usually, I learn about owl sightings from friends, by word of mouth, social media and eBird. When I go to a location where owls have been seen, I also like to explore other areas nearby that have a similar habitat. Often the owls are there too, but you are the only person there. That's pretty neat.
