THE GAEL - Theme from Last of the Mohicans ~ Composed by Dougie MacLean | Katy Adelson

- I've had a lot of requests to play the main theme song from Last of the Mohicans (also called "The Gael," and "Promentory"), so here is my version! I hope that you like it! It was composed by Dougie MacLean, a Scottish songwriter, musician, composer, and producer who has written several famous songs.
I actually have a Dougie MacLean music book published in 1994 that has The Gael written in A-Dorian with three parts (instead of the 2 that we normally hear from movie soundtrack). I included the third part just for fun. The A-Dorian key is also different from many of the versions I've heard -- so I played it in that key. It's a fun Scottish jig.
I played this on my violin and a C-major Susato Irish whistle. I'm new to the whistle (I started learning the penny whistle during the pandemic...), but I really like this Susato whistle! It's plastic but has a clear and sweet sound, which is awesome - I'm allergic to nickel, and I've learned that a lot of whistles are made out of nickel...I'm so glad plastic whistles can sound nice!
This was filmed right before that terrible cold snap came and froze most of the USA. The wind really started picking up towards the end, and the temperature dropped about 17 degrees Fahrenheit after about 6 minutes. It's crazy how fast the weather can change sometimes. It ended up having to be a pretty short filming session with the instrument parts, but I hope this video is still interesting to watch.
I hope you are well and staying healthy during the pandemic. I'm so excited for a vaccine! I still have to wait to get it, but I'm glad it's coming.
Thank you for watching, and I hope you have a good rest of the week! =)
~ Katy

Oh My Goodness. Daniel Day Lewis approves of this video. I have 8 versions of this on my playlist, and now a new favorite. We used this song in our dance class and combined native american dance, celtic folk dance and even a touch of maypole with a dash square dance and a sprinkle of courtyard steps. We got an A and so do you.
I loved that movie, "The Last of the Mohicans". It was filmed not too many miles from me. :)
The Dougie MacLean song that always made me cry when I was displaced is "Caledonia" , track 8 on Celtic Tides. Take care
the environment in Colorado is so beautiful! You're lucky living near those places
Racing through the woodlands, flintlock in hand . Absolutely lovely, dear girl.
I love it, it’s so beautiful there. I wish I could go there too.
Scott Highlands are The Most Beautiful Paradise in the world
Greetings from Glasgow Scotland Katie (and everyone else enjoying this too)!! I always love hearing your cover of Scottish music.
You must have a bit of the highlands in your blood!!
Thank you - I do have some Scottish ancestors! 🙂 But they were banished from Scotland for being Jacobites...oops...
@@KatyAdelson Absolutely nothing to be ashamed of in anyway there Katy. You are a descendant of very proud and brave people.
Katy's performance is nothing short of extraordinary! Her Irish and Scottish fiddle tunes are unequalled; bravo!!! May God bless.
Another great job and such terrific scenery too! Your video skills are also really taking off. So enjoyable - thanks!!
This was nice Katy my friend. Thanks for sharing. Have a good one. …
I love this! Learning Irish whistle was my pandemic project too. I'm also allergic to nickel, but I've found I can play the brass and aluminum whistles, along with the polymer whistles like yours, without a problem.
She always chooses such a beautiful background!!💚
The music and visuals are lovely. I got to see Dougie in concert about 20 years ago playing in a church in Pasadena, it was great. Your efforts in recording in that weather are appreciated...wind is not conducive to playing whistle :-)
I love listening to your music while studying. Great vid keep the smiles up
This whole production is masterful. Magnificent.
Everything is wonderful. This music reminds me a sense of pride and freedom. All the best 👍🌈🍀❤🎶
Awesome. This is the tune that motivated me to start learning fiddle. (Can't play it yet, but I'm getting there)
You can do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Katy you did another simply amazing job given the weather you had to contend with darling. You played that so beautifully and looked just as awesome so thank you for sharing with us at this time. Sucks we have to wait a tad for the vaccine though its a positive start in the right direction. Happy ST Pat's day Katy. In the meantime darling stay healthy and happy for now.
Brilliant, truly the flow and to my ear perfect harmony. Lovely thank you ...love from New York City ...trust me we need music to fill our souls back with love and hope.

Wuuuuu!!!! 💪💪💪👏👏👏👏
Love it, Katy!!
Thank you!!!🙂🎻🎵🎶🎵🎶
Great Job Katy ...as always... Your Dougie McLean book must be worth its weight in gold.... I can't find it anywhere... I am trying to learn this piece for Mandolin and cant find accurate sheet music anywhere. It looks like I am going to be slowing down your piece and have to figure it out by ear. Sounds like 12/8 time...maybe 6/8 any hint to get me started. Looks like you play the main riff all in first position.
Beautiful!! Love your attire!! You were probably freezing with the wind.. You have such a great personality! Thanks from Dennis
Merci et bravo Katy. Bonjour de France
I love your music
Always love your vide efforts- so much work involved bravo!👏👏👏👏🎼💕
You play this so beautifully. I love the higher key, plus the addition of the tin whistle and bodhran. You should consider touring some day, here in New England we have many places that host session music as well as ballad groups. God bless. 😊
You did wonderful ❤️❤️
Beautiful. Ready to fight for our freedoms
Amazing video.

Music Video Goals!!!! I love everything you post here!!! 😍🎼🎶🎵🎻🏴💙
Merci pour cet air que je connais bien....tu le joues très bien ....Bravo!!!😍
👏 Bravo! This tune always plays exceptionally well on the violin and with the tin whistle. I also make it a point to play it on the concertina too - just for the added affect. 👍 😊 🎻♫
I am in awe!!! I admit I used to dislike violin music, finding it dreary and sad, but you have changed that view to knowing the beauty and fun of it. Your video on how you make the videos was so impressive. I had no idea of the intricacies involved. And your outfits, drone work, I could go on and on!!!! Thank you! P..S. I thank Shirley the parody-making high school principal from New Zealand for mentioning you in one of her videos. She is also incredibly talented.
That is CO for sure.
You did an incredible job once again with both the music and through scenes. Love your work!
JW
Brilliant
Both the music and the landscape are beautiful! You must have had lots of request for this particular song :)
Köszönöm szèpen ezt a remek előadàst. Gratulàlok Magyarorszàgròl!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this!!! Thank you so much for doing this song! It’s all so beautiful... the whistle, the violin, and that stunning. scenery. We’re playing it almost 24/7 haha. My sisters and mom are learning the whistle and violin parts now, and I’m attempting to copy the best on a bodhran.... I’m beyond grateful that you chose this song... I never watched the movie but having read the book, it plays in my head now whenever I think of the book scenes.
Lol I was just working on this myself! I was almost creepy to get the alert on my phone...😆
G-DAY!! One of my favorite songs..and you created a masterpiece cover of it!!
Awesome!!
New sub!!!!!

Could you please cover ‘King of the Fairies’? I’ve been playing it for over a year now but I feel like there’s so much more you could do with it!

Glad you survived the storm
your a sweetheart.. and extremley talented....
Do you happen to have a musical arrangement written down for this? It's the best version I've heard so far for the fiddle.
🎻🎻🎻🎶🎶🎶👍👍👍❤️
Love this! What flute is that? 😊
Dear Katy, wanted to ask if you was planning to create the sheet music of this beautiful song, planning to play it with my wife will be really helpful. Congratulations for the beautiful video!
Your version of this is a favorite of mine. Can you do a lesson for this tune?
Nice energetic beat and well done!
It seems you placed the Pulse, Accents in the song just right.
Impeccable timing too.
Katy, how large are the Tripod tips? Somewhere around 2 or 3”?
Get something solid and cut out 3 squares. The larger surface area should keep the feet from sinking into the soft mud. Maybe Plywood or something rigid. The larger surface area should distribute the weight better. Ugh Oh, I’m beginning to sound like MacGyver!
Just a suggestion to protect your precious Camera.
P.S. Nice playing on the Flute!

Lovely but chilly rendition! If you get the chance, check out the albums by Chelsea House Orchestra, especially "Around the Room" have some great tunes and arrangements. Calliope House, John Ryan's Polka etc. (those are some seriously talented kids!) Also, the album "Chameleon" by Sara Johnson over at the Kitchen Musician (her website) has some seldom heard tunes you might absolutely love.
