    That woman who had to turn back should look at it this way-there are a hell of a lot of people who are blinded by ambition who end up getting killed or killing others in the process, and the fact that she has the wisdom to put her obviously very strong desires on hold shows how strong she really is. What she did was not fail to make the journey. She triumphed in overcoming desire and ambition, and choosing to turn back got her closer to "enlightenment" than the people who get to the end of the trip.

    I did this trek in 2017 at the age of 60. I did it with intrepid travel with a group of 16. I had never done any hiking anywhere so didn’t really know what I was getting myself into. Everyone I asked just said it was great so I thought what the heck. From lukla and back we were allotted 13 days. Only 1 of our group did not complete the trek. I am happy to say that I did complete it. I won’t say I didn’t complain but the experience was like nothing else I had ever done in my life time and I’m really glad I did it. I love watching your video brings back great memories. Good on you guys doing it on your own.

    Lately I've watched and read a ton of stories about alpinism, climbing and mountaineering from Reinhold Messner to Alex Honnold, and all kinds of heroic feats of humanity. And yet, I gotta admit your "simple" story was a highlight for me and among the most captivating to follow. I guess, because you are regular hikers like the rest of us, and yet you pushed yourselves by having no help on this high altitude trip, you suffered and overcame difficult challenges and made your adventures very inspirational for everyone. I salute you, brothers!... THE YAKS ARE COMING!!!

      Hi! This is a very nice compliment -- I really appreciate it. I think Free Solo, The Dawn Wall, Meru, are incredible films that everyone into adventure movies should watch. But, that said, I also agree that only so many of those kinds of movies can be made, and I think there's lots of other space for more subtle, normal-people stuff, and I glad you appreciated this for that reason. If you have any questions about how to plan this trip, let me know! -Hank

      Thank you so much for your time. I'm very fun of mountains and I have some experience here in Brazil, trekking in Rio de Janeiro, but nothing compares to yours, of course. I want to now everything like for exemple: the best season, is necessary to have a time before to acclimate, how much money can be involved once I'm going alone. Is it really necessary a guide, in my case, for example? I'll have all the time to do that with no worries, and I even think to have a volunteer program named "worldpackers" to help me more. I want to know the more I can from you.Thank you so much and saty safe.

    • @HankLeukart
      @HankLeukart  4 роки тому +1

      best season is probably sept-oct, though the weather is clearer i think in nov-dec (but it's much colder). yeah, you need to be very careful about acclimatization because the altitudes are so high. you'll either need to hire a guide or read a detailed guidebook to make sure you follow a hiking schedule that gives you enough time to acclimatize. You can see the itinerary we used here: withoutbaggage.com/mission-everest/ A guide can help to make sure you do everything correctly in terms of altitude, make sure you don't get lost, help you get out of bed in the morning, and always make sure you have a place to sleep that's convenient. But we did it without a guide and it worked out fine -- we just read a lot of stuff and a guidebook in advance to make sure we were doing it right. Hope that helps! -Hank

    Nice to hear your perspective of this amazing trekking. It reminds me my time there in 2014. feeling good most of the time, except the day we were suppose to get Everest base camp. I felt an amazing strong head ache ever. cried in pain. My guide was amazing to help me to get better, with his support and my desire to be there in the base camp I made it.
    Nice to see your brotherhood. All best travels to you...
    Just a small observation: Most of the time people don't have food poising. Remember your whole body system are exposed to altitude and that changes everything in your body, including the number and reaction of your own "good bacterias" that lived in your body forever. They are good friends of yo, by the way. Your whole intestine and stomach process changes in altitude. That's why, as well, some people get diarreia and nauseas.
    Of course, the conditions prevent us to have our own higiene as our body system are used too. That ,as well, can play a part on how we may feel there. Then we have the difference in spices, you may be allergic to some.
    plus, yes, in some occasion we can have, as anywhere in the world, food poising. We know that may happen, that why we go all prepared to that.
    The whole EXPERIENCE is what it counts. The contact with the Nepalese people, their culture it worth all, of course being there in those mountains make us really feel the presence of GOD. Our love and mind is there forever.

I have watched numerous Everest base camp treks whose scenery was as good as this video but that had no narration. Without narration one is only getting part of the story. Thanks Hank for sharing your movie, I find an important part of trecking/traveling is the people and the stories they share,enriching our experiences. You captured that by bringing other peoples stories of successes and fails which in turn, felt like we were on the journey with you.Also the bedroom scene was important as the conversation set up the daily challenges you (and we all ) face,it's very relatable and gain our empathy. Awesome stuff!

    This was an excellent video, unfortunately I wish that it had been longer. Great video scenery, excellent narration and dialog, great cultural and logistical information. Loved the accommodations and food segments, liked seeing someone not feeling well on a trip like this (unlike other EBC videos where nobody is shown getting sick). Note to all - Cipro is a miracle drug.
    Your video was entertaining , very enjoyable, and I like your sense of humor. I also like that you brought a game with you to use as an ice breaker. The two of you seem like a couple of nice guys who would be a lot of fun to travel with. Thanks for sharing and good luck in your future outings.

      Thanks for the kind words, Chuck! Glad you liked the video! The bad news is that we did try taking broad-spectrum antibiotics while we were there to get better faster, but in the Khumbu Valley there were bugs with resistance to the antibiotics, so they didn't help. We felt way better on the way down though, probably partly due to the increase in oxygen and partly due to the stomach bug subsiding. If you like watching our disastrous trips, you must also like our Superstition Wilderness video... that one is also full of our incompetence. :)

    Apparently you're not familiar with the alternate high trail which goes from Mong La to Photse and then Pangpoche. Many big name agencies have started to use that on the way up, for better views, empty trails and a lot of wildlife. Also the first Dingpoche acclimatisation night can be replaced by a scenic hike to Ama Dablam Base Camp and staying there for one night before continuing to Dingpoche. Same altitude both, so no extra risks and no time penalty. There is on lodge at Mingbo pasture few hundred meters south from ADBC.

    Did this in April, arrived in Lukla at 10:00 am and walked up to Namche that same day, arriving just after dark. It was heavy..espacially the part from the last bridge before Namche where the climb to Namche begins....
    The next day i walked up from Namche to EBC, in my opinion the easy part....but after a while you notice the low oxygen level...and walking feels a little like running.
    I was to heavy packed, about 19 kg backpack and walked on mountain boots type D ...but had rather taken just a pair of nike running shoes...allmost all sherpa’s walk around on running shoes...or slippers.
    I did the trip from EBC to Lukla in just a 18 hours and walked through the night...a lot of Sherpa’s walk through the night as well to avoid daytime traffic.
    So, do not “over prepare”...when you are in good condition just see it as a long walk...with a steep climb now and then.
    Have fun!!

    Actually you really don't need a guide as the trail is so well marked out. However, a good guide can teach you so much about Nepal and the Mountains. Porters are another story. They can help so much with carrying equipment etc. Most of them that I have met are lovely people and are just hard working people trying to support their family.

    • @HankLeukart
      @HankLeukart  3 роки тому

      I agree that, especially in Nepal, the guides and porters can add a lot to your hiking trip. My brother and I prefer to go it alone usually, but I did hire a guide for the Three Passes Trek in Nepal and enjoyed having him lead very much.
