FYI - the only reason you hear traffic from other talkgroups on the same timeslot is because the radio has been configured to have multiple contacts in the Receiving Group List used on that channel. You could certainly program the radio to only receive WW English on the WW English channel if you wanted. Hearing the other talkgroups is useful in that it tells you the timeslot is busy.
I'm not sure if he's talking about duplex channel (i.e. repeater mode). If the channel is simplex (i.e. Tx freq = Rx freq), time slot 1 or 2 doesn't matter. The receiving radio will always receive it.
I just ordered one of these. While it is a nice radio, the tetera MD-2017 is a great value as it is dual band and can do analog very well. With a firmware update you can have over 100,000 contacts in it. The audio however is not as good as the Motorola.
Hi, I have bought a second hand DP4800EX not long ago. I plugged my radio into computer which is running Windows 10, however it is not registering the radio. Is i because of the Windows 10 not registering the radio? or is there something else? Also, i am not sure why when i turn on my radio the options are the same as the default, such as i am not getting the GPS and Bluetooth option, unless the previous owner has programmed the menu. I am aware that this model has built in CPS and need to go to the Device Manager, then the network connection to install the CPS, but i can't see it registering the device. I really need advice on this please. Thank you in advance.
I think the Ventura Bus company here in Melbourne may use Motorola DMR transceivers on their busses. I say this because the other day I was riding on a bus and the driver had to turn the bus completely off then on again. When he restarted the bus, I heard a melody playing that sounded very much like the melody this radio played when you switched it on. Also, occasionally when I've been on the bus, I've heard a beeping sound that sounds like the noise this radio plays when you try to transmit and it can't communicate with the repeater, so I wonder if the bus company uses some kind of vehicle installed DMR transceivers. I can't see any reason why the bus drivers would need to use a portable battery operated transceiver.
In the mobile phone world you have many base stations in a city, so if you're travelling around from suburb to suburb your phone is handed off from tower to tower as your signal strength changes. Is the same thing true on DMR? That is, does a city or town have more than one repeater per talk group? So if you're driving a truck around making deliveries or something and you use your DMR transceiver for your job and maybe you're on the other side of town from your repeater, would another repeater on the same talk group pick up your signal?
I'm not sure if commercial installations have that capability, but I know as far as DMR-MARC is concerned, no, you must manually select the repeater you want to use.

Let's say you work for DHL and you have a DMR transceiver in your van and you only want others from DHL to hear your conversation, can a talk group be set up for use by DHL in such a way that people with other DMR transceivers that don't have the DHL talk group programmed into them can't hear you or communicate with you via DMR?
It's an interesting system, but unfortunately I think it's a decade too late to really have any success. In the pre-smartphone, pre-voice-chat era it really would've been something new and exciting, but now it may be too late to make ham radio act more like the Internet... especially since for the past 15-20 years the one big advantage that hams promote is that amateur radio is decentralized and doesn't rely upon the Internet or phone network, so now doesn't this go directly against that?
I'm not so sure about that; DMR-MARC has exploded in popularity in the past few years, now that the Chinese are turning out affordable and good quality radios. Five years ago there were no repeaters in Canada, and now there are dozens, maybe hundreds. You're totally right though - I had a QSO with a guy who said "it's only radio to a point," before it's just VOIP. And as you said, it's not very useful for emergency communications. So while I think it will continue to rise in popularity, I don't think it will replace microwave-linked analog VHF/UHF repeater networks. At least not for many years.
Thats the only thing I dont like. Even though its the same time slot, I should just be hearing the talk group I selected. Not other channels butting in on the one I'm monitoring. I thought I had programmed it wrong or an autoscan was turned on.
But I've never experienced that............ I have two MOTOTRBO radios which are programmed to have the same digital channel. The only difference of those radios is that: One of them has the group ID: 1234 while another one is 1235. Both radios obviously have the same Tx and Rx frequencies, same time slot and same colour code. Under such configuration, both radios can't talk to each other. This personal experience tells me that even I have the same time slot (and colour code as well), I can ONLY hear the talk group with the programmed group ID. Anything other than that is not hear-able.

Motorola indeed makes mobile DMR transceivers meant for mounting in a vehicle. That's probably what you heard.

Check for the codeplug of your radio, especially the Min Speaker Volume Level (dB) and the Fixed Volume under the general settings.

There is a Sask. talkgroup, but our repeater is not subscribed to it.

It depends on what mode they are using. Most departments use P25.
Stop thinking about it. They use TETRA or P25, not DMR!
