Budget suspension upgrades for Corvair | Adjustable rear suspension for under $200

  • We're back on the Corvair and so happy we decided to keep it around for a little longer! The rear suspension bushings were TOTALLY gone and needed to be replaced a long time ago. But instead of stock replacements we're making a budget improvement and putting adjustable rear arms on the 1965 Corvair. Using C4 Corvette parts we are able to make a very inexpensive, very noticeable improvement in the handling and safety of the car for only a couple hours work.

      They’re such neat cars. We had a ‘67 Marina blue convertible when I was a kid, and I guess it made an impression on me!

    Corvair's are an illness and there is no cure. You may sell it and the urge to own one may lie dormant for awhile but it never dies. As you have discovered they are a bag of fun to drive and will out handle most cars on the road. Living in West Virginia I have over the years carved up many a mountain road. I just finished rebuilding the complete front suspension on my 66 Vert plus all new brake and fuel systems. Presently replacing all the interior. I'm on a first name basis with Clark's! GG!

    I love Corvairs...they have been my favorite for over 56 years. I saw my first Corvair in 1966 LOL...yes I am an old guy. I like the way you did the spacers. Did you see the problem with those new arms? The inside eyelet is angled which is not angled on the old ones. I myself would put the original style camber adjustment "washer" back on as that would give me a rod that stays closer to the length it really needs to be( the less you change the rod length the better). I would also use the improved inside mount with modified mount holes and get better handling with no ride deterioration. Check your toe in at the rear and front and use no more than 20psi on the front tires. Good idea to change out the ujoints. Loving this so far.

    When I had my Street/autocross 'Vair, back about 50 years ago, I considered cutting and threading the inner ends of my control arms for 7/8" female Heim joints, now available from Summit Racing, among other places.

    Sean, I just fixed a similar misfire with my `65 Monza and it also had that same issue where I had to crank up my driver's side carb more than the passenger side to make them equalize. The answer turned out to be that my passenger side carb was dripping fuel into the intake. With the engine running, I could see a drop of fuel down inside the carb about every second. After a rebuild, it's not dripping anymore, the engine runs smooth without the surge from each drip and the carbs balance with the same settings left and right. It may not be your issue, but I figured I'd chime in just in case.

    Replacing the lower strut rods with adjustable Heim jointed rods is common on the race cars but works on the street. The inside bushings are subjected to hot oil and tranny fluid which hastens the deterioration of the rubber plus the stuff in over 50 years old!

      So far, they're doing great. The car is much more stable around corners and has no bad manners with the stiffer bushings. Definitely a good upgrade

    When you sell the car, include the old control rods and the dash paint.

    Dang it is always the Gen 2 cars people are upgrading, it's kinda hard to find stuff for the Gen 1 cars

      Lot's of stuff out there for the early model cars, just check out Seth Emerson's book on hot rodding the Corvair.

    I would really like to ask about my suspension. I know what you mean when you said it feels more firmly set on the ground.
    You see many years ago I hit a curb on my early model and it really screwed things up. I replaced many parts and it still saggs to the drivers side. It actually healed its self lately and is only slightly off. I took it to a suspension shop and they want to put spacers pads under the front and rear springs. What do you think of this?

      You shouldn't need spacers under the springs. Something has failed and spacers would only be a band-aid. Address what actually broke, which is likely a spring or bushing.

    Hey Sean, a tip for next time using your micrometer calipers, you can use the other end of the calipers to measure the plunge out the end of the caliper, instead of trying to use your "inside" calipers for the length to cut off the round stock. Thanks for your videos, this and the porsche have been really fun to catch up on
