    I only have 32, but most are terrestrial. 27 to be exact. Every single one made a burrow when given enough substrate. Out of that 27, only 3 hide in their burrow constantly. Everyone else tends to stay on the surface, yet every single one still made a burrow. I can personally say in my experience even the bad hair flingers rather run to their burrow then stand their ground. On a side note, when my well established turantula burrows around the side of the enclosure, I actually tape that off. It sucks because you can't see them in their burrow, but I feel it makes them calmer and more relaxed. Like just having that place to escape a potential threat makes a huge difference. I feel if a turantula tries to hide in its burrow only for it to be lit up by outside light just adds more stress to them. I'm a huge supporter for more space and more substrate for adult turantula.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  4 місяці тому

      I agree completely. I'm finding that more and more of my adult spiders will do a bit of digging if given the space. And, like you said, this can REALLY cut down on the hair kicking. Thanks for chiming in!

    Hi Tom and Billie (Happy Mother’s Day for yesterday) hope you’re both doing well.
    Smashing video Tom! And what a beautiful big Tarantula you’ve got there. That’s some enclosure for her, nice and roomy, It actually makes her look small 😝.
    As per usual Billie’s done a fabulous job.
    I especially enjoyed seeing your spider lifting her butt in the air, like she didn’t care 😂😂
    Thanks for sharing this Tom. Take care and have a great week ahead 🕷️🕷️😊😊

    Hey Tom & Billie! Great video! 🤟
    Totally agree with your move of moving your terrestrials to enclosures with deeper substrate. I think most 'terrestrials' just need to have a burrow to feel safe. Essentially, they're just burrowers who hunt further away from their lair (probably a few inches away, not much more; they rely on the web laid outside to feel the preys) than specifically, obligatory burrowers, and that's why they can tolerate an enclosure with no option for burrowing. I doubt you'd find any terrestrial in habitat with no burrow.
    I could see the difference between 1" substrate and 4" with my Sazimai blue, as a sling, no molt inbetween. In lower substrate, no burrowing. After rehousing, burrowed right away. Still spends the majority of its time on the ground, but retreats when feeling discomfort. I've got another 2 Sazimais to rehouse (same sac) and I'm sure they'll do the same. ;)
    Oh myyyy... that old Pampho lady is so pretty. ❤ I'm glad you've been so gentle with her and didn't startle her too much... Age commands respect, right? 😜
    Keep it up guys, have a great weekend! 🤟

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  4 місяці тому +1

      Hey, Thomas! I agree completely, and I'm moving a lot of my spiders into deeper enclosures with more sub. I DO have some that don't seem to use it (my adult Phormictopus species don't seem to care), but MANY of my so-called terrestrials will dig if given the room. It just leads to calmer spiders overall, and that's what this is about.
      My P. sazimais both went through psycho stages where they were the two most defensive spides in my collection. haha They have finally calmed down though.
      I hope all is well with you!

    These are a mess even among Pamphobeteus. None of the ones in the trade are the actual antinous, and we have 4-5 different undescribed species from Peru being bred (and undoubtedly at times hybridized) in the hobby.
    My girl is what’s usually traded as a “Big Black” but that could include more than one population, so I might try picking up “Rio Urbamba” (possibly the species my specimen belongs to) to be sure I know what I have; there’s also P. sp. “Pucallpa” which (at least according to the breeder I asked, and he also had photographic evidence for the two being different) apparently has much slimmer femurs.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  Місяць тому

      Pamphobeteus, Phormictopus, and Xenesthis are all a disaster. And I, too, worry about the different species being paired together. The gene pool is going to be a muddled mess. And I will keep a lookout for those species.

    Hey Tom! Awesome video as always! I don't have any Pamphos and honestly I don't really feel like I need one. I buy trophy old worlds, not trophy new worlds. Not slamming anyone who does that's just my preference. Love getting to see yours! She is stunning! I packed up 3 males today, my P. subfusca Lowland, E. cyanognathus, and O. Marinduque Purple, as well as rehousing my Dolomedes albineus. Overall everyone was pretty well behaved and the poor Pokie just kept scrunching up and trying to hide. It's always so sad because they really do NOT want to fight you and they get SUCH a bad rap! Eventually I had to just coax him out into the catch basin and he just immediately pulled his legs over his carapace and tried to disappear. Speaking of Pokies, I definitely need one in my collection and I'm trying to decide between vittata, miranda, and another subfusca LL, or maybe HL. Which would you pick? (I know how hard an ask that is for you!)
    Also, to answer your question from the podcast a few weeks ago, this is definitely more of a "fun" thing but I LOVE sorting things by colour and I really enjoyed the Orange Tarantula Halloween Special and the Blue Tarantulas podcasts! It's a fun and awesome way to group tarantulas of different genera together and talk about spiders you wouldn't normally group together due to geographical differences, ways of life, etc. Like, G. pulchra and P. arboricola are both big beautiful black tarantulas but no one would ever COMPARE them in any other way because you really can't get more opposite than those two and I just LOVE that juxtaposition. It's also a cool way to throw some underappreciated/unknown species some love and give them the spotlight. Would love a one on black, purple, and honestly grey because there are NOT enough grey tarantulas and you like research so go find me some :D in all seriousness, I really would love some podcasts covering your experiences with spiders of certain colours.
    I also LOVE the vs. podcasts. T. albo and N. tripepii could be a really interesting one because they're both SUPER fluffy and people tend to love that look but most of the time you’re going to probably get some different behaviours. I'd also really love for you to get Luis back on at some point. Y'all had amazing chemistry and I love his hot takes. I would also love an updated podcast/video on obscure species you keep because your collection is ever-evolving and it's been a hot minute since you did that video/podcast. What cool new things have you grown up since then? And I think I mentioned this before but I would ABSOLUTELY adore a podcast about other non-tarantula inverts you keep. I know you said those tend to not do as well cause people come to you for tarantula stuff but I think a lot of people who start with tarantulas do eventually branch out into other arthropods and I think hearing you talk about them- even just your observations, not necessarily as a "care guide" but just "hey I have these blue death feigning beetles too they're super cute I love feeding them dead crickets" would be awesome!
    Happy Mother's Day to Billie! Keep up the awesome work, really looking forward to your summer vacation because things go crazy at work and I'd love to see some longer videos!

    Quick question about the tarantula crib XL you showed in this video...in your opinion, do you think that would be large enough for a T. stirmi adult? I have a sling right now and I've been thinking about what kind of special jumbo enclosure I'll need in 2-5 years. I currently use stackable InterDesign sweater boxes (roughly 15 X 13 X 7 inches) for my adult terrestrials, but I know that a Theraphosa is almost certainly going to need more. Thanks Tom!

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  4 місяці тому

      Hello! That's a great question! T. stirmis can reach 9" or larger, so that might be a bit cramped for one. I have my T. blondi on the shelf above one of these cubes, and she would definitely be a bit large for it. Right now, she's in an enclosure that is about 10 x 10 x 24", and she looks to have enough room. I hope that helps!

      If it's one fang, they can usually still hunt and eat using the other. If it's both, you would have to prekill the prey and mush it up with a couple drops of water and give it to the spider that way.

    Open question: I worked at pet stores in the 1980s so that’s my perspective I’m wondering why people aren’t just using a 10 gallon aquarium or a 20 long for housing the tarantulas all the habitats seem too small to me. Nothing against Tom this is a great channel.

    • @nicodimus2222
      @nicodimus2222 4 місяці тому +5

      Well, aquariums have some issues.
      1) It's nearly impossible to get good cross ventilation in an aquarium unless you're good at drilling holes in glass without causing cracks.
      2) The screen lids they usually come with are unsafe because tarsal claws get stuck in them fairly easily, so you have to make or buy some other kind of lid.
      3) The vertical distance from the substrate to the lid is often too high to be safe, so you have to fill the tank with a lot of substrate to lower the danger of Ts falling from a height.
      4) They're quite heavy to pull off the shelf and do maintenance on regularly.
      I think the consensus among most keepers is that they require so much modding to make them ideal for tarantulas that it's not really worth the trouble.

      Nicodimus explained it very well! Back in the '80s, we didn't have specialized tarantula enclosures, so many folks used 10-gallon aquariums. They can work if put enough substrate in them and use drilled plexiglass on the top. But, the lack of cross ventillation can be an issue. Thanks!
