I got myself a Dominican purple thanks to your videos, and I love her so much. She just molted recently and has been much more out and about. I really appreciate your videos and the care you put into being helpful and honest.

She started out from a third of an inch and now she's right close to 3/4 of an inch I believe and I will probably be rehousing her within the next few weeks. I've been raising up three P. oriente and all three of mine have also been big time burrowers, more so than my other seven other species Phormictopus. They definitely act a bit different than the others but they are still a lot of fun.

Hi Tom, greetings from the UK. I enjoyed the video. I've watched earlier footage of yours on this species, picked one up as a sling and it's doing well. One is enough for me, and it's a favourite of mine. It's a juvie now and like you I'm interested to see how it develops 😊

I have a cancerides and a full green and it is one of my favourite species! Big, out on display a lot and great eaters! My cancerides just molted and I thought for sure he was going to hook out, but not yet… just got bigger and he is huge!!
Hey Tom! Awesome video as always. I was looking forward to an update on those actually! I have a male cancerides who should mature next moult (fun fact: he was the first T I handled!) and a female auratus. Would love a Dominican Purple one day! I struggle a bit with undescribed species just because it feels weird to have an animal that "science" doesn't know about yet, and I definitely don't judge others for doing so but it's just a weird personal thing for me. I have many undescribed species but it was always something I have in the back of my head.

I have an Auratus 😊 If you have a chance to get one, do it. They're so beautiful and I'm really enjoying watching it grow and change ❤ I'll probably be getting a couple more in the late spring. I love them.

The second one looks like a brown T with lighter colored lines on her legs. She is almost a rose gold or light purple and red hairs.

I got me a Phormictopus auratus a few months ago. I finally saw that huge molt you've spoken about. This guy went from about an inch and a smidgen to just over 2 inches! I was stunned. How do they even move before that transformation?
Isn't that insane? It's like the go from a sling to an adult in one molt!
I really enjoyed that. Also, I have a question that you could either possibly do a video on or do a small section of your podcast on when we're talking about the differences. What's the difference between the theraposa and the theraposaday and I'm very sure that I'm possibly spelling that wrong. I don't have my book with me at the moment I know that when I went on arachna boards talking about the theraphosa day rotan island purple that I got from fear not the first comment that I had received thought I had spelled the whole thing wrong which was a bit hilarious I guess my question is, are there real differences in size and care and what not between the two or did someone find a few different species linking them into the theraphosa found in somewhat of the same areas but they're still waiting to be researched would love to hear your thoughts. I have several of each or maybe it was just a spelling mistake on someone's part. I have no idea. Anyway, love the videos. Love the podcast. Have a nice day

This used to confuse me as well. Basically, Theraphosa is a genus of tarantulas that includes blondi, stirmi, apophysis, and spinipes. Theraphosadae is the family that includes all of the genera of tarantulas.
Theraphosinae is sometimes used as a genus "placeholder" for new, undescribed species. For example, Davus sp. "Panama" used to be called Theraphosinae sp. "Panama" until more research was done on them. Generally, anything labeled as "Theraphosinae species X" is a newer species that has yet to be described. Confusing, right? haha I hope that helps!
So, Theraphosinae species have littler to do with Theraphosa. As for species Roatan, I have one and have done a video on it. I LOVE this girl; she's become one of my favorites. Here's a link: ua-cam.com/video/-jWCJb1gQfE/v-deo.html
Hey Tom! Since this is about Phormictopus I have a question regarding Sp. Full green, I bought a sling few months ago at around 1.2" Inch! It was a really pretty bright blue sling when I got it, a few days ago it molted a third time since I got it, it's probably 2.5"+ now and her color is starting to darken I noticed though that whenever I shine my phones flash on it or take a photo with flash that it's carapace has a not so faint purple sheen to it, I was wondering If this was just an in between color before it turns green or may I was given a Dominican purple by mistake! Have you noticed this on your full green when they were slings? If I remember correctly you have two right?
Hey, Jem! Sorry for the super late reply. If I remember correctly, they did have a molt that brought a subtle purplish sheen. That SHOULD be an in between color!
i got a sp sierra last year. saw a phormictopus biyahibe or something. this genus just gets bigger and messier all the time.

Great video Tom, do you know anything about the Sierra de Boaruca locality?
As slings they have gorgeous red setae horse shoe shape on the abdomen, blueish color on the rest of the body like many other Phormictopus slings. They have typical Phormictopus confidence. Apparently as adult they are supposed to have coloring similar to a GBB or T. ockerti but I will see when the pair of slings I fell in love with mature. I've raised several other Phormictopus and hadn't seen any of them that looked like these as slings.

Hey Tom, not sure if you saw the recent animals at home podcast featuring Marshall’s arachnids but the bulk of the conversation focused on heating/basking spots for tarantulas with a little misting and tong feeding peppered in for added flair.. I really like Dylan from AAH but was disappointed to see him parrot and encourage this type of keeping /mentality rather than probe more deeply. I know you like to stay out of the drama but it might be worthwhile to offer some sort of rebuttal on your podcast because I’m afraid we’re about to see a bunch of cooked tarantulas
Hey, Parker! I didn't bother to listen to it, but I've heard from others as well. I've been putting a rebuttal together for this "new" type of keeping for a while, and that just lit a fire under me. I DO have to admit, though, that the last time I brought this stuff up, a bunch of people accused me of "attacking" the other folks. I'm not really looking forward to wading into another controversy, but the heat lamp stuff makes ZERO sense. I have old tarantula care books from the '90s that talk about the SAME THING these guys are trying to pass off as new keeping methods. We moved away from that as they do perfectly fine without it and many folks were frying their spiders. It's so annoying (and misleading). Stay tuned...

It looks like she is slate blue/gray. She has long butt hairs. Does she kick a lot of hairs? You are such a good spider daddy. Hey Billie. I heard there is a guy making a movie in California. He wants you to do the close up shots. A lot of stars do the same thing the T's do when they feel threatened and pose for you in the menacing way. You evoke the best reaction to close ups.
Different folks have different colors so why not T's?
