    Great comparison video. I have the RD-8 myself and love it. It definitely can't beat the TR-808.

      It doesn't beat it but RD-8 is still a fantastic analogue clone!

      @@juztinmullinz Oh for sure. I'm glad I have the RD-8. I love the way it sounds. I also own the RD-9 and RD-6 and recommend them both.

      let it cook for 40 years, then its the same

      @marius le You can cook its sounds right now in the mix. I make that kick punch and that snare snap. Of course all the other sounds just follow.

    The clap on the 808 is on another level...

  • @MrOuija-rr8kq

    Kick drums are super close.
    Rd 8 sounds “cleaner”. Especially on the snare and the clap.
    Probably what the TR sounded like when it originally released. I’m curious if that’s the case because that’s a crunchy ass snare. Nothing a bit crusher couldn’t emulate though.
    Also , the cowbell is always like a semitone difference with the original. I’ve noticed.

    I have the RD-8 and love it! While the TR sounds better, it’s not a game changing better. But for me, the modern conveniences of the RD-8 edge out the TR.

    The snare on the original sounds like the RD8 snare when you boost the compression on it.

      yeah the wave designer on the rd-8 can really bring out the tails of both the snare and clap

    I have an RD-8. The comparison with TR-808 was helpful. The original has a great "groove".

  • @anton8232

    Of course any original legendary machine that was made in the 80's will be hard to compare against anything fresh nowadays thats cheaper...
    But as a former Roland TR-909 owner, the pots will crackle and actual tune will deviate.
    Nowadays the aging TR-808 is being sold between 8-10 k which is just stupid.
    A New RD-8 retails @ £249
    I am not asking for some old wise mans comments, but even a purist will see sense.
    Either way, keep producing.
    ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

    The TR808 definitely has an edge on feel but the other one still sounds cool and usable. I found one for $250 is that worth it in today's market of drum machines?

    • @juztinmullinz
      @juztinmullinz  2 роки тому +1

      It's definitely worth it if it's in good condition with the box etc. and you might even be able to talk them down in the current market. Unbelievable value really for what you get.

      Actually you would probably not get the same sound out of two original TR-808s. Especially after 40 years.

    • @Andronicus2007
      @Andronicus2007 3 місяці тому

      @@derkernspalter That's true, for sure. Roland were always revising circuits back then too, and the tolerances on components were wildly different back then. So they were probably different even back then.

    Nice comparison. I own the RD-8 and to my ears, the TR-808's attack is a bit more snappy and punchy. That said, in the grander scheme of things in a mix you're unlikely to hear the differences...
    Further to that point, you get the modern connections and additional features of the RD-8 for a considerably cheaper price.

  • @tombrews

    Much more body in every sound of the TR compared to the Behringer. TR has more air and pop to it, whereas the RD sounds clamped and flat or something.

    Nice, but! Some instruments (Cowbell) don't have same volume or tuning (snappy snare) and decay (Kick)! and it's amazing how 808 sound like thru a reverb! Got both! 808 sounds wins!

  • @radiatingsun6056

    I don’t understand this comparison, you could have tuned each individual sound of the dr-8 to the same pitch of the 808 and then the comparison would be clearer?

    Sounds bit like behringer tried to match pretty bad samples of an 808, tbh, with samples of a good sounding 808 and a sampler, you get much better result even its not analog then..

    I’m also a Behringer user and for the money you pay you’ll get more than enough, probably the best clone out there including the new Roland digital recitations. However, I’ve upgraded myself from rd6 to tr 606, from ms1 to the sh 101, from td 3 to x0xb0x, and I’m currently waiting for a yocto to replace my rd8 mk2. I must say that the Behringer sounds great, but they’re lacking something musical. I can spend hours with the 101 every position is mind blowing, such an inspiring peace of gear, can’t say the same about the ms1, though it can reach almost the same sounds, it’s the little things that Behringer didn’t put their effort on, and it all sums up. Like here each voice is almost the same but when you hear it all together you’ll immediately notice the difference.

    • @juztinmullinz
      @juztinmullinz  4 місяці тому +1

      This is spot on! The clone never quite satisfies that itch for me either. In my case however I thought the TD-3 was an upgrade from the x0xb0x. Of course I'm on the hunt for a real TB-303 now! I was pretty happy with the RD-8 but the one track I made with it can't really sit alongside any done with the TR-808.

    • @adiyair2755
      @adiyair2755 4 місяці тому

      @@juztinmullinz I’ve never had a real 303 to compare with. My x0xb0x sound is really good to my ear, with all the corrections I wanted from the Behringer, the attacks, the square wave sound, and the envelope shape. I’m not so happy withe the sequencer which is quite annoying, and the random option is not doing it for me, I miss the original flow that Behinger wisely mimicked, not sure why they haven’t done the same thing with the ms1

    Eek. I cannot stand this RD-harshness. It's like ripping my ear drums. The TR-808 sounds both pleasing and DIRECT at the very same moment, while the RD tries hard, but fails miserably. And then there's also the groove / timing part. RD is stiff, TR just grooves for ages. Love the Roland TR-808, I simply love it. And yes, I hear the difference in the mix. And feel it, too. Cheers and please troll someone else, dear RD-fans. All I am saying is that I prefer the TR-808 by far. If you're happy and don't hear it in the mix 😀 ... CLAP YOUR HANDS and be happy like me.
