- He is my first review of the new RD-8 MkII.
This video is not a tutorial or a detailed feature run through. As a live Acid Techno improvisor and performer for almost 30 years, I wanted to go through some features I loved and how the RD-8 MKII builds on the spirit of the TR-808 with some nice new sound enhancements and sequencer/performance features. Behringer have said they redesigned some of the key components in an effort to get an authentic 808 sound. The firmware has also been revised.

All audio was recorded without any pre/post processing whatsoever, all audio is coming directly out of an old Mackie 24•8 mixer with no EQ. What you are hearing is as raw as possible, with no embellishments.
We all know the 808 sound and it’s hard to not to know it these days as this legendary drum machine has informed a variety of electronic dance music genres from Hip Hop to pop music. Owning an original TR-808 is a rarity these days, I purchased mine over 20 years ago at time before prices went crazy. These days owning vintage drum machines and synths are the fare of privileged people, like old men with ponytails collecting vintage guitars. The RD-8MkII is great riff on the original. The new additions such as filter, wave designer, tuning on the kick, clap offset and the added sequencer features make a great drum machine. I applaud Behringer for producing an affordable, like-for-like clone. This gives more people access and it can only promote more music making! Hope this video provides some insight into this new machine.
Disclaimer: I was a beta-tester on the RD-8 MkII although I do not work for Behringer and they have nothing to do with the making of this video.

Actually this really speaks for Behringer, they actually listened to the critics, invested time and money and this sounds absolutely stunning. Can't wait for the reviews :)
This will be my first drum machine
I think you just answered by previous unanswered question, replete with nice editing. Thank you Sir.
I just love the way you explain things and the examples are really useful! :)
A very pleasant moment with positive attitude !
Thanks for the knowledges base !
Peace !
Great review, funny and informative!
Good on you man. Great review.
Thanks a lot for sharing! As a non-native speaker, I enjoy this accent. Good memories :)
My pleasure!
Great demo mate.
Thanks for the subtitles :)
exelente explicaçao como funciona a RD-8 !!! A função de transformar os ritmos drum em synth é MÁGICA!
Cant wait to check out the RD8 2!!!
Excellent video. Demonstrates well why to buy one of these rather than just dropping samples into one's MPC.
@3.37 spot on mate that's a classic haha! Plenty of them around on here and the forums.. The know it alls are everywhere ;-) Great video subbed!
thanks!
Can't wait for the RD-8 mk4 !!!
Basically, this is the Mk4! ;)
Behringer Rd8 Rev1 (Rimzilla) then came the revised Rev 2 without the too loud rim shot and then the Rev 3 where the mainboard was modified (Rev2 mainboard yellow / Rev3 mainboard green)!
Behringer Rd8 Mk2 (Rev4)
Greetings from Germany
@@mareikemacinnes7764 OK, rev 6 mk 5 !
Lmaooooo thrown out of the 808 club omg you are my new favorite
👍🍻 Mine should finally drop tomorrow from Andertons- super stoked if the new chip makes Snare sound just like that original snap tone!! 😎🎵🇬🇧
interesting informative, to the point. Thank you. Enjoy your day! Rolf
🤠 That's a phat sounding filter.
Amazing!! Thankyou !!
Great video! Quick question can it transmit midi notes? So I can use a few unused voices to trigger my Akai sampler? I don’t want to go down a hardware sequencer rabbit hole 😂
A great short and sweet demo that covers quite a bit of ground, thanks. It's really not much of a clone at this point. It could be argued that this is what Roland might have done had they continued development of the 808 but they didn't, Behringer did. Behringer should get big ups for this all round but there will no doubt be detractors. I'm interested to see how these features sound on the RD-9. We're truly in a golden age of electronic music instruments.
Golden age was the 70's and 80's imo.
@@fawkkyutuu8851 Hell yes!!🤘
Mines on its way!😤
I really want to hear about this PhD work on the x0x sequencer. It sounds super interesting.
I heard interesting things about the original sequencer from this producer in Detroit. It wasn't digital and it would often stray in time. This, to me, seems like the real meat of the original spirit. Please, make a video or share your paper on this! It's difficult to find any info.
@@JoeWisniewski From what I understand the 606 and the 303 were also really important to the Detroit sound. Both have very interesting quirks.
> it would often stray in time
@@JoeWisniewski rhythmwolf managed to recreate it even with a digital sequencer
@@AndrossUT Most of the 303s fame is because the way the sequencer in it interacts with the sound. The Glide and Accent is notorious hard to recreate on a DAW.
Alright, I'm sold! As of now, I plan on acquiring the RD-8 and RD-9. I'm not a hardware guy since I produce in DAW, but for live performances, i'd _definitely_ create another side project that would consist of me playing the RD-8 and RD-9 alongside my old microKORG.
Maybe even dust off the old OG Launchpad and run that through Ableton for samples? This is exciting!
I’m getting one as soon as the shop opens up
I really appreciate that the instrument select buttons have the respective instrument names on it on the RD9... especially when the light is dim i get lost on the RD8, because they only say "select". I wonder why they didnt put the names on the MK2...
Great video. Even better to hear someone who knows the gear and calls out the whingers that bash on the clones. These clones can actually be bought. You can walk in to a shop and buy one, even two. Just stumbled on your videos and really loving them.
This does sound better than the other one. Hard to complain now. But is there any velocity changes over midi like on the 909? The sequencer is actually not the kind I use for drum programming.
I don't make music but i find reviews like this interesting would love to see more stuff like this
I like that you kept this simple enough people who know fuck all can understand cheers
making music is life changing
Awesome!
when you save a pattern, will it also save all the knob paramiters, including the wave designer, and filters ??
Do the 808 and RD-8 CV Gate outputs sound different?
how do you make the synth sound at 8:10 ? with looping and hardware distortion?
Firstly, thanks for all the bangers over the years. Secondly congrats on the Phd. Thirdly, how would the RD9 and RD8 vs TR8s rate for live performance?
All very capable machines for live and studio, lots of fun!!
@@Honeysmack
What would you say the main difference between the rd8 & mkII is??
I’m kinda mad I sold my tr8s seeing how it samples and the rd8 doesn’t
Can you do a side by side comparison of the same drum patterns on the mkI vs mkII, interested in how different they sound. I already enjoy the mkI so would be interested to hear the difference.
i also want this
Did you hear what he said at the start of the video?
😜
@@junlimited he says NOTHING about the differences between MKI and MKII. He is comparing it to the original TR808.
I suspect there is little or no difference other than the black buttons. Behringer mention something about a chip, but whether or not that chip is in the MKI, I don't know. They sound the same to me. There are some serious bugs in the RD8, particularly the sequencer. Rather than a revision in the sound, it seems this is a hardware update that fixes the bugs present in the MKI which are hardware related and cannot be remedied via a firmware update. I suspect the MKII is what the RD8 MKI was SUPPOSED to be, i.e. A PROPERLY WORKING DRUM MACHINE.
It took me a wee while to save up for the TR8 and I think you have used one as well. Do you think I would be better to get this MkII? I use the TR8 as a controller as well so it has other uses. After seeing you use this new one and also Kink it has got me thinking. Anyway, Thanks!!!
TR-8 is great, different again. There is never one over another - the machine that is better is the one that you find works in your approach. I know that's not the answer you want, but really just because someone says "x" is great doesn't necessarily mean it will be great for you! 😉
does the og rd808 have flam amount, per step per instrument?
You make a good point about the question asked a million times. P.s. remember you playing a great set at a warehouse in Adelaide. Queens theatre maybe??
Very likely to become collectable in their own right. I want one
Oh Jeez you had me laughing so hard and loud at 2:55 - I woke up the entire house + the neighbours, everyone hates me now but I'm still laughng -- oh my dam
Would be nice if the cowbell had tone and decay like the cymbals; the cowbell is on the short side.
Sounds Damn good. When will this version be released to the public?
You can already order it on Thomann. Don't know when it will be shipped.
www.thomann.de/fr/behringer_rd_8_mkii.htm
probably december ,along with the rd9
Did they address the trigger outputs with MKII ?
Im debating if I should wait for the mk2 or just get the mk1 and save 60 pounds. Any thoughts?
MK2 all the way!
hey honey so what’s the difference between the rd8 and the rd8 mark2? other than the black buttons and the metal case!
Sound, the real mojo chips
@@el_dani apparently how close it sounds to the original doesn't matter because all the originals sounded different from eachother (joking, but that's what Honey said)
The new version has reverse engineered chips that are very similar to the original ones used by Roland and long out of production. The MkI RD-8 is pretty good sounding. I don't plan to upgrade, I like my original RD-8 just fine.
@@caktalfraktal it's abou the BA662A chip, but I don't know any of the machines, first I need an 909
They claim better headroom on the outputs (mix and individual outs) also some additions/improvements regarding the sequencer aimed at live performance and live recording
GR8. thx. 👍
is that gigantic watch you have a new midi controller for the RD8?
I love this vid
Ready fun!
can tune parameters be automated ?
sounds better than the orignal XD
Is the bass drum sequencable via midi?
Does the Roland sound like the Behringer?
I don't have a pony tail either. I used to.
hahahahahahahahhahahaha
Great rundown. Also your Facebook link isn’t working for me FYI. But found you fine in the app. Not sure if just cuz I’m not logged in in browser.
Got mine coming tomorrow from andertons woohoo
I just noticed. Did Loopop's hands guest star in this??? Kidding aside, I'd be curious to hear the RD 8 MKII then an RD-9 swapped out with each other on the same track. You appear to have both, soooo...
What's the difference between tone and tuning on the BD?
Tone is like a lp/hp cutoff with resonance, tune is pitch tuning
Mr. Honeysmack
Ignoring the sound of the TR and the RD series, what machines work flow do you prefer the most? I don’t care about how they compare to each other. Also on that note what else has a workflow you prefer over these?
Thanks for the years of Techno study and synth jamming.
The workflow of the TR-808/909/707/606 is the one that is most familiar as I've been using them for the past 3 decades. Although the RD series are very immediate and have never referred to the manual. I feel Behringer have evolved the workflow of the originals and added new features without complicating the interface. The main focus for me, is how any piece of hardware can be performed, and the RDs have the immediacy of the originals. The discussion around 'how it sounds' I find boring, everyone can source a x0x sound these days - its the performance interface and immediacy of its controls that can be tricky to get to get right. Behringer have done a great job here.
@@Honeysmack thank you. I look forward to jamming on my RD series machines, even more. I knew I made a good choice.
How this one compares to the miami acid labs?
When is the release date?
Wow, thats one of the cleanest looking 808s ive seen. looks like new
nice demo...ruuuun! xD ;)
Hi Honeysmack, I see it has only a mono output, how do you have it connected?
Mono! There's no stereo effects, so mono it is. Although there are individual outputs per sound.
@@Honeysmack Ah, Thanks a lot man.
So how does it sound compared to the original rd8. How about that Bloody question
..:)
@ Don Chilner Junior
Buy the machines and find out for yourself. They’re cheap AF and I’m assuming you have working ears.
They technically gave the rd 8 mkii some features that the rd 9 has and for 350 usd... that's a steal!
I have the first one ,, I still have time to return it within the “30 days” Mark, but have to wait until October until MK 2 is available. With that being said, the ONLY way I would return the 1 is if the 2 has “closer to the original 808 sounds” as people claim,,, to the human ears of you can’t tell the difference,, then why part with my 1? I have an original 808 and I’m pretty happy with my RD8 1 as i don’t think you can get any closer,, I’ve never cared for 808 kits that Roland Corp THEMSELVES have made, like the R8 and R8M or Boss drum machines, Behringer has exceeded that with their RD8
Interesting... so post back if you think your Mk.II on test is even closer to your 'flavour' of 808 original you luckily have 👍🍻🎵
How does the mk2 compare to the mk1?
MK2 is more advanced.
@@oskie66skye The only diffence is the 662 chip and black keys instead of white.
@@oskie66skye the sequencer functions are exact the same on the mark one
I agree
@@NTRSN-Archive The reverb and the more enhanced wave designer are all new in MK2. I got the MK1 and it's a bit different than the new one...ask the proper purists and they'll know what they're talking about.
3:01 truth! 👍
I don't have a ponytail...but i have an 808 and all that 😂😂😂😂😂😂 great!
I like that you demonstrate the types of things that would actually be used, not just a list of "cool features" without any context. That "synth" thing was very cool. Just one question: How does this compare to the original? lol Can't wait to watch your RD9 review. Thanks!
Hahaha did you seriously just ask how it compares to the original. I guess you skipped through the first part of the video
@@koreanfriedchildren Lol, no, I was being sarcastic. Even the originals don't sound like each other or the same after repairs. I think Honeysmack knew that.
so, does this revision make the rd-8 CLOSER in sound and behavior to the tr808?
Dave you RoCk!
Imagine if this replaces the RD8 MKI, but overall consensus is that it sounds inferior, and the MKI units become sought after
Hahaha in a distant parallel universe. One has to get the market metrics and respective history right. Is your Mki1 still working tightly?
🎶💥⚡💣⚡💥🎶
Did you miss the switch ? 🙂
You're one of the few people with both the mk2 and an og 808 and you didn't do an A/B comparison :(
"ponytail envy" 🤣
Love your vids Dave. You’ve convinced me.
How to pronounce "Behringer" (by Uli Behringer):
ua-cam.com/video/Zq8SPxJgHVs/v-deo.html
Came for the RD-8 MkII, stayed and subscribed for the absolutely fucking hilarious skewering of authenticity snobs
Also small thing but I love the clap offset feature....I can already hear it in the couple bars before a drop
why the picture from the watermelon man?
I have been trying to justify buying it for the last 24hours and I can't make up my mind. I have way more power in the DAW, so can someone give me a speech that can sway me.
Have more fun.🎉
I ended up getting it and it works quite well with the DAW. I import and export MIDI back and forth to get the performance I need.
First Behringer product with true analog sound
the mkI has the same sequencer functions..
for me , no need to get the mk 2
rocks solid!
But isn't that the whole point - to sound as close to the original ? Probably the most important question of all.
Who and what is your point aimed at?
(Honest ?)
No analog drum machine (and probably emulation) will ever sound exactly like the original TR 808.
Roland has stated themselves the original units used a defective part that they specifically bought from the chip manufacturer. They were basically factory defects.
Once the defect was corrected and the stock of bad ones ran out...
No more TR-808's
@@BendApparatus I said as close - cause it won't sound like the original, but the whole point is to sounds as close
What the hell is flam?
:)
Dude: don't sweat the ponytail. It is my privilege to have The Hair so you, Yul Brynner, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Bruce Willis, Patrick Stewart, Moby and Vin Diesel don't ever have to feel that a light has gone out in the world. Besides, your watch and ring are really big.
This is a tribute to the Roland 808... and that's awesome. Clones... meh... but with this added functionality ot feels like an 808 mk2. Behringer is starting to tilt towards direct clones and it's losing that wish list charm of modern interpretations.
i don't hear any difference between mk1 and mk2
a million $40 effects pedals exist - a 4bit vic20 can sound like an 808 with the right pedal ! Today's kids are lazy want plug & play. Alot of good earning rap songs used a 400 Hz test tone on 1/2" tape cause they couldn't afford a drum machine !
Didn't hear any flam paradiddle diddle examples. Instant down-vote. I'm kidding of course. Your performance demo sold me on it. I miss "playing" a drum machine. Thanks!
not sure why the people that expect this to sound exactly like the tr808 annoy you.... after all, that IS the premise of this instrument. its SUPPOSED to sound exactly like the OG 808.... conversely, I am not annoyed when my tanzmaus doesnt sound like an 808, or a 909 or whatever, because, its not MEANT to sound like anything, other than exactly what it is.
its a tanzmaus, the only requirement is that it is a good sounding drum machine.
the manufacturer claims it is an exact sounding clone of the tr808, which is precisely WHY people are buying it.
My 808 doesn't sound like his 808. My 808 doesn't even sound like it did when I bought it.
The way they've been treated / how they've been stored / humidity / temperature and the tolerances allowed on original components all have a huge effect over time.
Restored 808's with new components that (supposedly) match the originals sound like the Behringer.
@@Gainn that is true. another point, is the TD3, people claiming it is not quite like the TB303 it is supposed to emulate perfectly in all respects. the original ones dont even all sound like each other, and depending on their condition, dont necessarily sound very good.
How does it compare to a real 808? Who f'ng cares? A vintage 808 goes for $6,000 these days. For 1/20 of that price I get a unit that works great, sounds nice, and I can replace cheaply when it fails. If I was making an album, I'd rent a vintage one, otherwise this is just fine.
6k?? I think I'll be okay with pictures
The price on the 808 is insane.
I think I paid about 200 for mine in the early 90's.
Sorry..but you wrong..it doesn't sound like a 808
Sorry, but it does sound like a 808!
@@-xoilox-stefan2604 nope
It does to mine, have the mk1,so don't be a Jxxx and spoil things for other people.
@@-xoilox-stefan2604 I have all of them and two TR 808, 3 TB 303 and much more...stop spreading misinformation....It doesn't sound like a TR 808...It sounds like a 808 light...
No it sounds like fm synthesis
BEHRINGER CAN'T KEEP UP WITH THEIR OWN $HIT. It'll take over year before we'll see this in the stores. By that time MkIII. Flow 8 not available, RD-9 not available, this one, not available
I should not sold my mint Kenton 808 by only 1800 euros in 2011, this copy is as almost all B copies absolute crap.
People want to know how it sounds compared to the original because it's marketed as a Clone of the original. I appreciate the video but obviously people want to know how the Clone sounds compared to the original. Otherwise we'd just buy any random drum machine.
Even two originals would "fail" an A/B test.
@@oldunclemick I agree; but isn't the whole point of the Mk2 to sound more authentic to the originals? That is it's main selling point over the mk1; so it's just moot to get upset over people asking about it lol.
Hold the fck up , at 3:20 on your video is that a white man dressed up with black face?
