    Very helpful video but the video made it seem much easier than it is. The front-3 plugs are easy. But the back-3 probably took me 3 hours. Be sure to use an integrated swiveling 5/8" spark-plug socket like the one in the video. Don't use a standard 5/8" spark-plug socket with a separate swivel-adapter because the swivel-adapter will likely detach and it will be extremely difficult to remove a straight spark-plug-socket on the back 3 plugs. (I bought a swiveling socket after a bad experience on #1.) I changed my OEM plugs and wires on my 2007 Equinox at 100k miles (after 15 years). It probably took me an hour (and some really sore, bruised forearms just to get the boots off of #3 & #5 because they were stuck so badly. I eventually got them off using a round-jaw pliers that I placed perpendicular to, and just below the hex-head of the silicone boot, pulling with both hands, several times. You can't see the back plugs so the work is completely blind unless you use an endoscope (like I did). I'm not sure if I could have done the back-3 plugs (especially re-inserting them) without an endoscope. If I had known the job would have been that difficult, I probably would have taken it to my mechanic (at least for the back 3 plugs). Not sure if it would be easier to do next time because the dielectric gel that I put on the boots might make them easier to remove. If I tried it again, I'd probably remove the coil pack and bracket as others have suggested here.
    FYI: After 100k miles, my original plugs were VERY worn (despite probably 85% highway driving), but there were no signs of any engine problems, like oil or carbon fouling. (I think they should be replaced at more like 75k miles.) Just prior to changing the plugs, the vehicle had started to sometimes stutter and buck on the highway. I thought that maybe the transmission was failing. Then it threw P404 (EGR valve) & P1779 (torque to TCM) engine codes-- even though I had just replaced the EGR valve (due to an earlier P404 code). But after I changed the plugs & wires, it started running well again-- no more stutter/buck on the highway and no engine codes so far.

      Changed out the spark plugs on my grandpas equinox with 120k. Spark plugs looked extremely worn, the parts were the originals. Only changed the plugs and not the wires, his choice not mine. Hopefully the dielectric gel will make it easier to change out the wires when they fail soon enough.
      Forearms are so bruised, getting the boots off or the rear ones was difficult.

    The firing order on the 3.4 is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 if you stand on the passenger side and face the engine the first spark plug against the fire wall which woul be on your left is Number 1. Number 2 is the first one on your right. Then 3 will be the second spark plug on the same side as 1. Then 4 would be the second plug on the same side as 2. 5 would be the last plug on the same side as 1. And 6 would be that last plug on the same side as 2 . the coil is numbered so you cant mix them up i typed it out like this to help anyone who is new to cars and eliminate confusion.

      @@katrinalindahl1293 you will have to take that bracket off as well to expose the plugs. 10mm for the 2 bolts under the coolant line. You will need to pry it up a lil bit to get the bolts out. Not much, just a lil bit. Then a 13mm for the 2 in the back. Use a short extension with a deep well socket. The back plugs are a pain but be patient. Lol

    My plugs ran well for 98,500 miles (since I bought the car) Still were ok but the car had a missing cylinder for a minute or two during morning start up so guess it's time to change them.
    Having a magnet socket really helps matters especially on the rear bank.

  • @oldgeezer68
    @oldgeezer68 8 років тому +2

    I found this to be very helpful. I really liked the old plug boot idea, worked well. However I waited until almost 150,000 miles to change plugs. The engine ran pretty good until about 140k. So the plug wires wouldn't twist and pull off. So in the back, the odd numbered plugs, I couldn't get the wires off, like shown here, so I had to go into major surgery mode. I removed the airbox on the left, engine mount, generator, the coil pack and it's bracket, and then I could get to my rear plug wires. Took about a week out in the nice Michigan spring weather after work, but I got it done (beats February anyway). Changed the serpentine belt while I was in there too, hence removing the engine mount.

      Okay, so, you don't need to disconnect anything and we changed the plugs from the top of the engine (not underneath).The hardest part was putting the plug wires back. Cylinder 5 plug wire just wouldn't click back into place. Persistence is key with the back wires. Also, we didn't use a torque wrench, we hand tightened and then did a ½ or ¼ turn I believe.

    Hey would bad wires and plugs cause spark knocking & even cause my engine to get overheated enough to cause antifreeze to boil over and spray out the reservoir bottle...
    I have replaced thermostat cooling censor relays to my fans cause they had shorts or bad connections and i noticed the number 3 plug boot on the cable had a cut and was dry rotten and i seen a thick red spark arcing on the block or exhaust manifold..
    It seems to overheat when its idling too long.. and even shakes motor then stalls..
    I can drive it once the motor is revved up it drives fine till i stop at lights or let it idle too long then it overheats and idles takes off with no power..

      I think the video didn't show a lot of important operations for job. First of all, you need to remove the ignition coil to reach the back plugs. However, that operation is not that easy because the required pull off force is high and and it's very hard to hold the boot with bare fingers or other hard tools. Having struggling for a day with them, I used a nylon paracord loop to pull off the rear plugs. I wrapped around the boots with the loop and pull them off. Wrapping is not easy but possible.

    I have never been compelled to send anyone making videos money ever no more so than I have the hairy krishnas Or the not hairy krishnas at the airport for giving me a flower only difference is laugh out loud you can't take the flower back see my thinking says if anyone's to stupid to figure out how to change spark plugs without a video the they have no business changing a flat let along a spark plug
