Welcome Richie! This song would become Jonesy's showpiece when performed live and could last 20 minutes or more. He would improv through a keys solo and add things like bits of classical, jazz, blues...whatever he felt. This definitely has a bit of prog-rock feel as they always tried to explore the obscure paths of music. They got the underwater-like piano sound by processing Jonesy's Hohner ElectraPiano through a synth. There are so many musical textures and techniques here including synth washes, synth soloing, Moog Taurus pedals and an uncharacteristically jazzy guitar solo from Jimmy. According to engineer Andy Johns, they got the buzzy guitar sound by using a couple of compressors and direct injection into the mixer; it was a technique similar to the one they used for Black Dog. The overall thick sound happened in part by Jimmy using vari-speed to slow it down. The lyrics touch on Robert's continued fondness for legends, lore, and battles fought both real and fantasy as he describes soldiers "wearing steel that's bright and true" travelling possibly through a mountain range (the "winds of Thor" could be Mount Thor, a Canadian mountain range) during a blizzard. They will show "no quarter" as they "carry news that must get through". This is a dark, moody masterpiece.

No Quarter. What a mesmerizing song. JPJ shines on this prog-rock song. It highlights his skills as an arranger, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. He played the bass pedal, EMS VCS3, and keyboards. The origins of this song can be traced back to John Paul Jones. He devised and recorded the chord progression, and had even written some rough arrangements in his home before playing the tape to the other band members during the sessions for the fourth album at Headley Grange. Jimmy, Robert, and Bonzo liked the mood of Jones’s composition, which at that time had a very fast rhythm, but they decided to put it aside and rework it for the next album instead. As with When the Levee Breaks, Jimmy dropped the whole song a quarter tone because “it made the track sound so much thicker and more intense.” No Quarter means showing no mercy, was used by pirates out on the high seas when they spotted a ship they wanted to raid. It was also used by the British Army when they encountered patriots during the American Revolution. No Quarter = No Prisoners. Robert’s lyrics used the phrase and wove a story about the Vikings. Led Zeppelin played this often in concert from 1973 onward.

@@ToMitoReacts1017 Believe it or not, its even greater live....and of any Zep track, its the song that has been played the most number of different ways over time. Some nights, Jones would do a keyboard solo and go in this direction, and the next night he would go in a completely different direction. Jimmy and Bonzo would follow Jones and play off him wherever he went, and the song would be completely different from night to night. Once you're done with all the album tracks, you can go off and find live shows, and listen to/collect bootlegs, and hear how different they were, live. One night they might play a setlist that was three hours. The next night with the same setlist, they might play 3-1/2 hours....or 4 hours. I'm still finding stuff 5 decades later that amazes me, and new stuff is always being found and restored.

You think this is insane, you have to see and hear this live version from Earl's Court in London two years later. The long instrumental trio that expands the song well past twenty minutes is a thing of otherworldly beauty, and reveals the band at its' jazziest... And with that telepathic mental and musical closeness between Page, Jones and Bonham: the trio is all improvised, only some very general outlines of it remained the same from one show to another! (plus, the sound quality is phenomenal)

When you finish the album, this song & The Song Remains The Same/Rain Song, need to be what you do live. These three songs live are crazy mind blowing. Mito loved seeing that smile on your face, & I knew you would love this song. As always thanks again hun. JPJ really shines in this one, piano synthesizer & bass foot pedals. If you feel like it, can totally relax and immerse yourself, then I recommend the 25-minute Earl's Court Version 1975 (May 25th or one of the 6 evenings), the big solo performance by JPJ with over 10 minutes of “alone
Piano Concerto”. In German there is the expression "hard tobacco", which could be understood here in two ways (you can also use something soft), because at this legendary 3 1/2 hour concert there is a one-hour song sequence The Rain Song+Kashmir (on next album; I'm not a fan of it, but when then live it's better mixed)+No Quarter, a total musical journey.
