Watched this as a young kid and missed a lot, but as I watched the movie multiple times getting older, it changed my view on it. First time I watched it, I thought Jenny was evil, but then I realized that because of her abuse, she gravitated towards abusive men and was trying to keep Gump away since she didn't feel worthy of his love. I also really noticed how much Lt. Dan really made his peace with God and moved on from the war, even marrying a Vietnamese woman. Also had no idea why Jenny was dying and later realized it was in the middle of the AIDS epidemic when it was still pretty unknown.
Couldn't have been AIDS, though. That would've mean Forrest Jr. had it too. It was the early days of it, doctors didn't know what it was, so Jenny would've passed it on the baby, 100%. No medication to help with that. Plus, she most probably would've passed it on Forrest himself. They had no idea how to mitigate it, so probably no condoms. I believe the autor of the book said it has Hepatitis C.
A lot of people miss that Jenny was just damaged, traumatized. She was always telling Forrest to "Run". And what did she do? She just kept running. She couldn't love Forrest because she didn't love herself. I enjoyed your reaction MJ.

Jenny's problem is how she was used and abused, 1st by her father, then by every man she met except Forrest. She felt like she was worth nothing and was never going to be worth anything and would just bring Forrest down with her , she had no idea how to love anyone. It wasn't until she had little Forrest and was given one pure good thing in her life she was able to find her self worth to a point and then accepted that she loved Forrest and always had and it was OK to love someone and not expect them to hurt her. It is very complicated and you get snippets of it in every scene she is in. The first thing you see is all she knows how to do is run from anything as she keeps telling Forrest to do , she doesn't know any other way to deal with the pain and bad and it takes her so long to finally figure it out ( unfortunately this is true for too many and some never get to figure anything out) , Jenny deserves pity not hate , she didn't know how to love until it was too late but she gave Forrest 2 gifts before she left, true love and what it feels like , and someone to love and give his life meaning in Forrest Jr. . Forrest might not be a genius but I would lay any bet he is an incredibly loving and good father.
Jenny loved Forest this whole time, but she didn't feel she was good enough for him. She was so broken by her father, she couldn't believe he would want her. She had Aids, after all those years of drugs and sleeping around that's what happens. Fun fact: the man who killed John Lennon was imprisoned in Attica Correctional Facility for years which is about a 20 minute drive from my house. He has since been moved to a different prison about an hour farther away.
@@CoastalNomadYeah, but in the 80's, they knew what Hep C was. Jenny says the doctors don't know what the virus is, which at the time was when HIV was starting to get recognition in the medical community.
@@Hal2718they did NOT know what hepatitis c was in the 80s. Wasn’t identified until 89. They literally called it “unidentifiable”when diagnosed because it wasn’t a or b. And it can cause cirrhosis which is fatal. And the way she knew she was sick then went pretty quickly actually lines up with cirrhosis. You’ll seem fine when diagnosed but that wont last or end well.
Jenny felt tainted from her horrible childhood and that's why she only dated abusive, awful guys... She didn't want to be a burden to Forrest, and she knew during that tough time she would only bring him down..
I always kinda feel bad for Jenny. She had such a terrible upbringing that it traumatized her to the point she felt like she didn't deserve Forrest. What infuriates me is how she couldn't see that Forrest didn't understand that and basically treated him like crap intentionally in hopes he just stopped talking to her for good.
I know this was a period piece set over a few decades. But the movie-making and storytelling of the 90's was undefeated. This movie is a prime example.
Watching this film as an adult hits differently than watching it as a kid. I thoroughly enjoyed watching your reaction to this incredible film. Especially since this was your first time watching it. It's truly a classic. 😊
Forrest's speech at the peace rally was "Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don't go home at all. That's a bad thing. That's all I have to say about that."
1. The music rights alone must have cost a small fortune 2. Kurt Russell did the voice for Elvis. 3. IRL Sally Fields is only 10 years older than Tom Hanks. 4. Having gotten his degree Forrest could have gone into the Army as an officer like Lt. Dan. His ASVAB kills that. 5. He actually saved Lt Dan twice. Once in the field and again to get him out of his post war funk and Dan turned his life around. 6. Normally an enlisted Army person would be fully aware of his/her separation date. 5. Jenny did indeed give him the best gift ever (it wasn't the shoes) 8. Jenny died of Hep-C from dirty needles when she was in Caliphony. 9. It's ironic that Lt. Dan told the guys to take care of their feet because he loses his. 10. At the rally Forrest says, "Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don't go home at all. That's a bad thing. That's all I have to say about that." 11. You have had a ride through recent US history and culture. From Elvis, John Lennon, Abby Hoffman to Vietnam and Watergate. Even the jogging craze of the 70's. About the only thing left out was streaking. 13. "Sometimes I guess there're just aren't enough rocks" 14. Haley Joel Osmentt/Forrest Jr. steals the show in "The Sixth Sense" with Bruce Willis. 15. Often when he's finishing a segment about death, he ends it by saying "That's all I have to say about that" 16 Keep in mind if Jenny wasn't wasting her life seeking men like her father and was with Forrest he/we wouldn't have had this incredible journey.
The most poetic thing in this whole movie, I think you missed it (I did too the first time), was the feather. The movie started with the feather blowing on the breeze, and ended with the same feather blowing on a breeze, no control, just going where life takes it. Forrest's life was like that. Everything happened in his life and he didn't have any control over it. High school, college, army, Viet Nam, the hurricane, getting rich with the shrimp then richer when Lieutenant Dan invested in Apple stocks, Jenny, little Forrest, all of it. Forrest IS that feather in the wind. He even said so: 54:55 "We're all just floating around accidental-like on a breeze".
Drives me crazy how easily everyone always judges Jenny. Of course Forrest didn't deserve how she treated him but you have to understand deep rooted trauma to understand Jenny's life. When Jenny was a child all she ever wanted was to be able to run away and as an adult that's all she ever did. She knew Forrest loved her and she loved Forrest back, but she didn't know how to receive love. It took her many years, pretty much her whole life to work through her childhood trauma. Loved your reaction, thank you for sharing it with us! Wishing you an awesome week!
@@zaqueenzhane7744 true but empathy is a thing. People are far too quick to judge anymore without even trying to understand why a person is the way they are. Far too much judgement in the world.
41:30 - Jenny's even sadder than that. All of her pushing Forrest away and indulging in all manner of drugs, etc. is psychological fallout from the mistreatment her father heaped on her when she was little. The character of Jenny is the textbook definition of "damaged goods".
According to Tom Hanks, Forrest’s speech was as follows: “Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don’t go home at all. That’s a bad thing.
I’ve said this for and I’ll say it again I never ever thought forest was Slow or special needs I just believe he’s a very simple man Who looks at the world with love and innocent eyes. He’s a better person than me and over half the people on this planet. I believe God made Forest exactly how he is damn near perfect.
I like to believe that after the events of the movie, Forrest went on to do more awesome stuff, meet a girl that actually loved him back for real and eventually becoming the president.
22:00 "I don't think Charlie is a guy. Are they talking about Alpha Beta Charlie or something?" Pretty close. Victor Charlie, which stands for V.C. which in turn is the initials of the Viet Cong, the enemy. The army likes to talk in code as much as possible, so instead of saying "Let's hunt Viet Cong" it became "Let's hunt Victor Charlie" which is just way too long to say, so that became "Let's hunt Charlie".
I never get tired to see this movie. it's got a perfect mix of humor, ternderness, sadnes, everything!! also a piece of US recent history seen through Forrest eyes. In a certain way, Jenny is also a victom of the circumstances so I don't blame her. As she said at the end: her life was a mess. Great reaction. and have a wonderfull weckend. Regards from Mexico to yuu pretty girl. See you
I watch this when i was younger lots of the hestoric events when over my head , but growing up and finding out that theses events happened in real life just makes this show more amazing
Jenny was broken because of her childhood abuse. She felt she didn’t deserve someone as nice as Forrest. They were both “ running” thru the whole money. That’s the central theme of the movie.
Dan tells Forrest in the bar, u become a captain and I'm an astronaut! Later when he's walking, he tells Forrest his legs are made of Space Shuttle material! Then they both star in Apollo 13!!! Type in here Forrest Gump speech!! Irony... Kurt Russell met Elvis as a kid, then did a movie with him a few years later, then did John Carpenter first TV movie about Elvis, then played Elvis a couple times like in 3000 miles to Graceland, then does Elvis voice, here! Pro tip...the kid, grew up, joined the military, and was in some hardcore units!
I like how the abbreviation "Victor Charlie" is actually longer than the full "Viet Cong", in number of letters as well as in number of syllables. Kinda defeats the purpose.
Every time i watch this movie i get all teary-eyed and sn my film teacher from hs is in this movie and it's always funny seeing a younger her! Greatest teacher!!!
@@tariqyousaf8635whats messed up about Jenny sleeping with Forrest? If you mean to infantilize him because of his mental condition then you terribly misunderstand his character and Jenny's
@@mcgfn she took an advantage over a guy with no experience with women and was given the cold shoulder bet since she was at peace now she thinks it’s fair to sleep with him she should have just stayed away from him like she always has
Good reaction....but a lot of people (you included) don't seem to understand why Jenny is so toxic. Her character is that way because she is broken after years of physical and 'SA' abuse at the hands of her father as a child. She never healed from that so she's been carrying around that trauma throughout her entire life. And the only way she knows how to deal with her problems is to run away and hide, just like when she was a little girl who used to run away and hide in the cornfield, or run away at night and hide in Forest Gump's bedroom. She also doesn't think that she's capable of being loved...she thinks she's trash and hates that she exists. This is why she treats Forest Gump so harshly. She's not lashing out at him....she's really lashing out at herself. The filmmakers did a great job of portraying a victim of child abuse who's now an adult. In a lesser film (like most films today), after the scene of Jenny being removed from her father's house and put into the care of her grandmother, the adult version of Jenny would've been totally fine. But this movie took a braver route by saying that people take these traumatic experiences with them throughout their lives, and are in a constant state of a work-in-progress.
I definitely understood that. I think anyone can understand that. But Jenny was an adult. Forrest was going through stuff too and he didn’t let it affect him negatively. This is applied to real life as well. We are ALL going through some tough stuff. Or in her case when through tough stuff as a kid. That doesn’t give us the right to be crappy people and do crappy things or treat other people crappy. If anything that should’ve made her want to be a better person towards people. Or even a better parent since her father never was. You can feel for her and understand… but you can’t make that an excuse. The same way she did at the end where she picked herself up and realized what she’s worth, she could’ve did throughout the entire film. I feel for her though. I really do.
@@MJWITHOUTSPIDERMAN - Everything you just wrote indicates that you don't understand her character, the character's trauma and suicidal tendencies, and the fact that while it may seem that she's being 'crappy' to Forest, she was actually trying to protect him from HER. She didn't want to bring her trauma into Forest's life, which is why she kept pushing him away. She didn't want to infect him with her issues. It was her way of protecting the only person she loves. She wanted to insulate him from her dysfunction. This isn't an excuse for her or for anyone to treat other people harshly. It is simply an explanation of why she is the way she is. Again...not many people get that which is why the 'Jenny' character in this movie is one of the most misunderstood characters.
Sooo protecting him from her means sleeping with him even tho she doesn’t wanna be w him so therefore hurting his feelings then not telling him about his child until she had no other choice because she was dying? That doesn’t make sense. Like I said, I’m sure we’ve all felt like Jenny at some point but that’s not an excuse.
@@MJWITHOUTSPIDERMANNo offense but how was she supposed to tell him about the child…. Last time I checked they didn’t have phones to call each other and even so he was on the run for three years with no real address. You’re very ignorant.

Most people assume (fairly enough) that she had AIDS since thst was the big thing in the 80s. From what I understand, the timing is a bit different in the book and the implication is more likely Hepatitis C or something.
@@deanahicks6744 yeah, presumably, soecially after getting married, Forrest and Jenny got busy more times. If it were AIDS then he surely would have caught it to. Hep C is much less likely to spread through sex.
The Green Mile is a novel by Steven King. I hope you'll consider other movies based on his novels. For those who don't know Shawshank Redemption, Misery and Delores Claiborne are definitely worth the watch.

A lot of people including me, really didn't like Jenny but without Jenny he'd have been screwed. She told him to run if he's ever in trouble and he survived on those words. He was on the straight and narrow with tunnel vision to be with her one day, when so many other women would have taken advantage of him, just taken his money and broke his heart. She never wanted a dime and gave him a child. After watching it a few times, Jenny kept a distance, but she was screwed up and he was out there doing really well and she didn't want to mess that up for him. People like to try and force that relationship, but I don't think that's fair. What's neat is Forrest and Lt. Dan talk about his legs being made of the same metal used in the space shuttle and like a year later they're both playing astronauts together. The stories Tom Hanks could tell about all the movies he's been in. That would be one great book.
Something i just kinda realized after watching this movie and reactions so much. Forrest usually doesn't talk much during his life. But he talks to strangers on a bench with no problem. I think thats Bubba living through him in a special way since he was always talking to Forrest
"it's so sweet how much he cares for that girl but she don't even pay him no mind. that's messed up" - Honestly this happens to SO many of us guys. We find a girl we'd do anything for just to make her happy, or to make her smile and that girl won't even acknowledge us.
Jenny did love Forrest. She just knew that being with him would hurt him because of her issues. She knew she had to stay away from him, for his sake, until she got over her issues.
The saddest part of the movie is losing his best friend Bubba. Mykelti Williamson is also a helluva actor, he played a stellar performance as a recurring character as Elstin Limehouse in my favorite show, Justified.
I've watched several of your reactions recently, and I have become impressed with your authenticity and perception. I am charmed by your cute mannerisms and the fact that "you are just the sweetest thing in the world." I wish that you were my great granddaughter.
The movie is about simple unconditional love, something we all should strive for. Jenny was just the vehicle for which to take you there. It's great that you caught most of the historical references -- it's very rare for the younger generation.
"Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it." -Bubba
I used to watch this movie every year visiting my great grandma in Oklahoma. I always thought it was a cheerful movie. Then I grew up and realized how dark it is 😭😭
Yes, I had a friend who died of AIDS and it was very early in the pandemic, and that was 1991. The year that Jenny is supposed to have died would have been really early for her to die of AIDS, but it was fairly common for people to get hepatitis C and die from it, as they didn’t have any effective treatments at the time. The most common way to get hepatitis C was through needles.
There is a meaning behind Lt Dan's magic legs. Lt Dan told Forrest if he was ever a shimp boat captain he would be an astronaut. His legs were made from material that was uses on the space shuttle. Im also glad you picked up Jenny becoming a bird so she could fly far far away.
As far as an education, if you remember, Forest got a college degree, and the smartest person I met in the Army was a 2 star general with 3 count them 3 master degrees.
Tremendous movie that doesn't get enough love and a lot of people consider it wildly overrated because of the melodrama. A lot of people don't like Jenny because of the way she abandons Forrest, but she's going through her own issues. Being abused like that by your father would mess any kid up. The whole Run Forrest Run thing is all about Jenny running away from her problems and that's instinctually the only advice she can really give him. For me, the biggest moment of the film is when he's visiting Jenny and discovers that her son is his. So many people miss that bit where Forrest gets emotional about whether or not his kid is smart. Forrest knows the challenges of having a learning disability and how hard his life has been because of it, and knowing that his son is smart academically and won't have to face those challenges overwhelms him with happiness.
Jenny did love Forrest But she didn't love herself and felt that she wasn't good enough for him and that she would be distruction for him and his life. Hurt people hurt people 🤷🏾♀️ Unfortunately low self esteem can distroy you and can cause you to mistreat the people you love and the people that the to help you, if you don't learn to deal with it
Although it is never mentioned, it is possible Jenny's dad killed her sisters. It would make sense seeing as though they are never mentioned again. It's a very dark theory, i know 😥
Charlie is a radio phonetic for the letter "C". In Vietnam the "Viet Cong" was the enemy, therefore the radio call sign would be Victor Charlie, but shortened to just Charlie. A lot of theories are that Jenny died of HIV/Aids, however the author of the book said she died of Hepatitis C.

I read an article where they said the Author said Jenny had Hepetits C...... Both fit the time-frame of the 1980's.......
@@CoastalNomadYeah, but in the 80's, they knew what Hep C was. Jenny says the doctors don't know what the virus is, which at the time was when HIV was starting to get recognition in the medical community.
@@Hal2718 I've always leaned toward HIV/AIDS myself..... Just repeating what was reported in the article about what the Writer had "said".........
HepC was discovered in '89.
The virus Jenny had was Aids, at that time a death sentence, like 6 months of life or something.
Arguably the greatest movie of all time.
Honestly bro it’s prob not even arguable
I know this was a period piece set over a few decades. But the movie-making and storytelling of the 90's was undefeated. This movie is a prime example.
Watching this film as an adult hits differently than watching it as a kid. I thoroughly enjoyed watching your reaction to this incredible film. Especially since this was your first time watching it. It's truly a classic. 😊
Forrest's speech at the peace rally was "Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don't go home at all. That's a bad thing. That's all I have to say about that."
"but you aint got no legs lt. dan" classic line :D
Fun fact, Dave Chappelle was supposed to play the role of Bubba.
Ice Cube as well but he rejected the Role
@@G3MiNiOfficial I honestly could not see either of them playing Bubba, maybe they’d pull it off, but I think the casting here is perfect.

Great notes! But in the book Jenny dies of Hep C, but for the movie her cause of death was changed HIV/AIDS
She for the streets
She gave him aids and that probably not even his kid but anywa he deserved better Jenny needed therapy
It's nobody's job to heal ur trauma for u but yours
@@zaqueenzhane7744 true but empathy is a thing. People are far too quick to judge anymore without even trying to understand why a person is the way they are. Far too much judgement in the world.
41:30 - Jenny's even sadder than that. All of her pushing Forrest away and indulging in all manner of drugs, etc. is psychological fallout from the mistreatment her father heaped on her when she was little. The character of Jenny is the textbook definition of "damaged goods".
One of my favourite movies of all time. Used to watch this on repeat as a kid. Such a masterpiece
Jenny loved him the whole time, she thought she might ruin him
Yet she slept with him because of her own selfishness
John lennon part was genius. Lyrics of imagine. Lol
Unfortunately, Jenny equated being used and abused to love due her father abusing her, which is why she told Forrest he doesn’t know what love is.
According to Tom Hanks, Forrest’s speech was as follows: “Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don’t go home at all. That’s a bad thing.
I’ve said this for and I’ll say it again
I never ever thought forest was
Slow or special needs
I just believe he’s a very simple man
Who looks at the world with love and innocent eyes.
He’s a better person than me and over half the people on this planet.
I believe God made Forest exactly how he is damn near perfect.
The little boy who plays Forrest son plays in a movie called the sixth sense with Bruce Willis , u should definitely check that out. Very good film
NOOOOOO. That movie is really good but way too sad for me.
Yep. That's Haley Joel Osment.
I like to believe that after the events of the movie, Forrest went on to do more awesome stuff, meet a girl that actually loved him back for real and eventually becoming the president.
55:36 "Please let that little boy be so happy."
He will be.
Until he starts seeing ghosts in about 5 years. He seems pretty traumatized then...

But I refrained from making any comments about “Tusk.”
22:00 "I don't think Charlie is a guy. Are they talking about Alpha Beta Charlie or something?"
Pretty close.
My uncle served in Vietnam did 2 tours he also was a tunnel rat because he was small and skinny
A whole symbolism & theme of Nostalgia, Disability, Heroism, Destiny.
The guy who showed Forest Ping Pong dressed in Blue was Ray Ray in South Central.
Jenny was broken because of her childhood abuse. She felt she didn’t deserve someone as nice as Forrest. They were both “ running” thru the whole money. That’s the central theme of the movie.
“It’s the sweetest thing in the world!”
The main enemy in Vietnam was the Viet Cong, shortened to VC. In the NATO alphabet VC is Victor Charlie, shortened to Charlie.
I like how the abbreviation "Victor Charlie" is actually longer than the full "Viet Cong", in number of letters as well as in number of syllables. Kinda defeats the purpose.
@rschroev if it makes sense you're doing it wrong. - pretty much everything in the military.
Forrest Gump a history lesson.
Every time i watch this movie i get all teary-eyed and sn my film teacher from hs is in this movie and it's always funny seeing a younger her! Greatest teacher!!!
Oh Jenny….one of the great villains in movie history. 😂😂😂😂
I feel like this movie is emotional for me and I love the ending of the blonde girl getting married with Forrest
So promoting men to be simps and take whatever is good she should have left him alone she took advantage of him
It's ashame Jenny was to damaged to love Forrest back till the end,he just wanted to love a protect her.

Forrest lived a life full enough for 5 people
Good reaction....but a lot of people (you included) don't seem to understand why Jenny is so toxic.
@@ess6566 so no offense but continues to offend me by calling me ignorant? lol ok. also, if she really wanted to tell him, she would have. you would find a way. there was thousands of people followinghim on that run, she couldve found him lol
Most people assume (fairly enough) that she had AIDS since thst was the big thing in the 80s. From what I understand, the timing is a bit different in the book and the implication is more likely Hepatitis C or something.
That’s what director said that it was Hep C
@@deanahicks6744 yeah, presumably, soecially after getting married, Forrest and Jenny got busy more times. If it were AIDS then he surely would have caught it to. Hep C is much less likely to spread through sex.

You are correct about the Viet Cong soldiers being referred to as Charlie because of the phonetic alphabet. “V.C.” or “Victor Charlie”
Bubba gump shrimp restaurant a hit here in San Antonio Texas ❤
I get the Jenny hate I do, BUT from her perspective, she feels like Forrest deserves someone better than her and that she doesn't deserve love.
She doesn't believe she's worthy of love. So she rejects him.

Jenny had the hepatitis C virus according to the book's author.
Seeing it with a thousand people in a theatre on opening weekend was really something.
Love your reactions! THANK YOU ! ❤️
During the Vietnam war the Viet Cong were nicknamed "Charlie" 👍🏼
That was epic I knew you would love it and I loved watching it wit you ❤❤❤100

Jenny did love Forrest
But she didn't love herself and felt that she wasn't good enough for him and that she would be distruction for him and his life. Hurt people hurt people 🤷🏾♀️
Unfortunately low self esteem can distroy you and can cause you to mistreat the people you love and the people that the to help you, if you don't learn to deal with it
Although it is never mentioned, it is possible Jenny's dad killed her sisters.
Yeah it was Hep C, wasn't known back then and no vaccine/cure. Was right before the AIDS pandemic in the 80s too, probably didn't help.
