I find lightbox absolutely essential when working on large project, any 40min+ project I work on I make extensive use of it. If you use resolve in a multiscreen setup, default behavior will be to send lightbox on your secondary monitor which means you don't need to toggle it on and off, in fact that is how I discovered it, because otherwise in single screen it is hidden away behind that button... also worth pointing that the clip view can behave in a similar way as lightbox, if you right click on the clip view icon at the top you will get all the same filtering options you get inside of lightbox, which I find is also useful for smaller project, or when I am working single screen on the go and don't want to bother switching interface views.
Yes, I have been telling people for years to use Lightbox. It really is under reported on youTube. Especially useful to see in context scenes. Not really related, but I wish Resolve had subgroups. It seems people use groups for grouping camera types and/or scenes for add Looks or master CST inputs etc. Would be great if you could organize the camera types seperate from the scenes. I once had a 1 hour interview that was pulled from a scene detect of two people in different locations. By cmd-clicking I clicked through and added one of the people and added him to a group then was able to filter for the other guy and assign him to his own group. Was a lot easier in Lightbox. Good topic and choice for a tutorial. cheers
Thanks Jim. Yes seeing the groups in lightbox is easier for me on big docs. Its almost a spreadsheet. If I get permission after it airs I'll share the doc as it has many more groups than this which help show just how useful it is. Thanks as ever your comments. D.

What are additional outputs in deliver page & why we can't apply other preset to toggle other settings in 2nd format? 3. What are smart filters in the deliver page? How are they being helpful? Really enjoyable episode. I'd love to see an in-depth video on the use of the Advanced Panel V2. Your first overview of the V2 panels was very helpful, but other than that there is really no training resource for them. You could ever charge a fee to view them. I'm sure some colorists or assistants would love to get more familiar with the panels and workflow before a session. I happen to own the panels only because I bought them just before the mini panel was announced, but with the V2 it seems like there is so much more power, I wish I could get the full benefit and techniques.
Hi Johnny I think the advanced Panel 2 is far too niche for me to be able to do as an episode. There really are not that many of them out there for me to spend maybe 12 hours making a video. Hard to justify but appreciate your input all the same. Thanks, darren
Worth mentioning, if nobody else has, that the lightbox function isn't available if you have a dual monitor setup. But you can pull up the standard media pool.
Workspace/Show Panel in Workspace and Ctrl+Shift+F do throw the thumbnail timeline across to the secondary monitor, but in timeline mode without the possibility of scrolling. It doesn't come as a usable grid. It has the filters in a scrollable sidepanel, which is also fairly unusable. The fact that dual monitor mode causes the interface to drop the Lightbox icon probably shows that BM doesn't really think this is the thing to be doing! (Could be because I have a lower res second monitor which I have vertical - great for media pool or a script but maybe confusing to DVR.) Anyway, I can do most things bar the filtering with the media pool...
Can you make a tutorial that covers the group feature and what’s your approach to them? I feel like that this is a powerful feature that gets also overlooked quite often which is why there aren’t many tutorials online.
I use light box and groups all the time. Standout feature for sure. I wish there was a way to program keyboard shortcuts/stream deck keys to switch groups. That make the process so much smoother. Anyone know of a way? Haha
Question, what happens to that project once closed now that some clips have been toyed with for the sake of demonstration? Without doing an edit undo, wouldn't the clip you adjusted @ 3:19 be un revertible to the grade you initially gave it? One of the cons of autosave I guess.
Good question JT. So I made a back up of the project first so original not affected, but TBH...The jobs finished...the video has been out for months. I think that once you've closed the project the save history is gone...but I'll check! Or maybe you can check and answer me your own question ? UA-camR TURNS QUESTION AROUND TO SHOW HOW MUCH TIME GOES INTO ANSWERING THESE THINGS !! Well, seriously...check it out and let me know! Appreciated.
That explained nicely, Thanks. I tried the lightbox, but the footage looks contrasty and pixelated in the lightbox only. No solution on the web that I could find. What I might be doing wrong?
i cannot see a Lightbox option on my pc in dual screen mode. when in single screen mode it shows up. resetting ui in dual does not make it hsow up again... Any suggestions??
Isn't this default in Dual screen layout? it's been so long since i've worked WITHOUT this..groupin/comparing/copying..i don't know how people work any other way. I do wish there were more options for the INFO under the clip.. codec info isnt very helpful when grading. know what i mean..
Hi Darren, whenever I used two monitors, the lightbox thumbnail disappears, I have to turn off clip icon, gallery, waveform icon...in order to view the lightbox contents😅a bit inconvenient. Is there any easy ways to show it easier when using dual monitor?
Ive seen it before - I think you have to toggle between Lightbox and gallery (or scopes?) on 2 monitors - I dont run 2 monitors so cant check. maybe someone can chime in here and help/confirm. Thanks
@@DarrenMostyn Thanks Darren! I love this feature, when I editing film essays, I have to watch so many films and cut them into one short videos. So I normally would scene cut detect them all in once and look for my favorite shots in the lightbox. This feature saves my life!
I had the same problem, I love my dual screen setup but wanted to use Lightbox as well. The answer is to set a keyboard shortcut under, keyboard customisation, workspace, dual screen then goto ‘on’. I use my stream deck with a shortcut for this and I just hit it when I want the lightbox to appear and hit the same key again to go back to dual screen. Works like a charm but just remember when setting this up, make sure that the single screen is on Lightbox.
I wish you could output a pdf from the lightbox. Perhaps all here could request it:), would also be cool to be able to export a pdf from the ordinary viewer aswell. For example you could do a four looks on one clip and show all four and just spit out an pdf of it.
@@DarrenMostyn hmmmm, really? I have a four monitor system; 2 27” for GUI, one grading monitor and large screen for clients. I wonder why I don’t have the button? I’m on 18.6.
Once the material is in where is the original material kept? Can you keep all that you have done on the show for many years so that when you call the project up is all of lightbox information still there? Is it the same as lightroom in respect?
Amazing tutorial Darren, i never used that tool. May I ask you something? I have a MB Pro M1, an external display and an iPad Pro, is it possible to use the two physical displays for editing and the iPad for the clean output? So you can check the results in the iPad? (Could be because I have a lower res second monitor which I have vertical - great for media pool or a script but maybe confusing to DVR.) Anyway, I can do most things bar the filtering with the media pool...
It won't show if you have 'Clips' enabled ( on the top right ) on the Timeline page. Disable Clips and it will show on the other monitor
May I ask, if you were to purchase a new reference monitor today, what would you choose? Thank you for helpful videos! The best!
Thanks Darren. Good stuff :)
Can you make a tutorial that covers the group feature and what’s your approach to them? I feel like that this is a powerful feature that gets also overlooked quite often which is why there aren’t many tutorials online.
Yes sure. Good idea.
Love your videos! Thank you!
Glad you like them Julia ,appreciated.
I use light box and groups all the time. Standout feature for sure. I wish there was a way to program keyboard shortcuts/stream deck keys to switch groups. That make the process so much smoother. Anyone know of a way? Haha
Not that I know of.
Thank you for great tips.
Bless you!
And you succeeded again to suprise ( me ) Thnak you for adding this tool to use 🙂
You are Welcome my friend
@@DarrenMostyn thanks for the feedback and that makes sense! Keep up the great work ;)
That explained nicely, Thanks. I tried the lightbox, but the footage looks contrasty and pixelated in the lightbox only. No solution on the web that I could find. What I might be doing wrong?
Delta Sleep! Great band! 🥁🎵
Was a pleasure grading that one!
@@DarrenMostyn I bet! 🙂
Great tip. Is there a keyboard shortcut to open lightbox, if not can I set one?
HI Sir, Your videos are jam packed with knowledge,
Can you plz make a video on - HOW TO DO GOOD KEYING IN A COLOR-MANAGED ENVIRONMENT?
Thank You.
Hi Chirayu, Ill make a note of it yes. thanks for the suggestion.
Excellent video, thank you x
Glad it was helpful!
i cannot see a Lightbox option on my pc in dual screen mode. when in single screen mode it shows up. resetting ui in dual does not make it hsow up again... Any suggestions??
It won't show if you have 'Clips' enabled ( on the top right ) on the Timeline page. Disable Clips and it will show on the other monitor
Works like a charm but just remember when setting this up, make sure that the single screen is on Lightbox.
ctrl shift +F😉
I wish you could output a pdf from the lightbox. Perhaps all here could request it:), would also be cool to be able to export a pdf from the ordinary viewer aswell. For example you could do a four looks on one clip and show all four and just spit out an pdf of it.
screen grab it and export as pdf is a workaround. To do 4 looks use the 'split viewer' and grab that. Another episode maybe.
lovely setup

@@DarrenMostyn i saw ur every vdo i m a big fan urs
Btw, Lightbox doesn't exist as a button/tab, you have to turn off Clips on the left and Lightbox appears.
Not on my system. It depends on your screen resolution. You have less screen resolution I suspect.
@@DarrenMostyn hmmmm, really? I have a four monitor system; 2 27” for GUI, one grading monitor and large screen for clients.
I wonder why I don’t have the button? I’m on 18.6.
@@pxlmvr7 yes really!
Awesome video Darren, I'm going to use Lightbox a lot more now. Is there a way to update the thumbnail that Lightbox uses for each clip?
Not that I know of but you can scrub as I showed. Thank you.
Does anyone know, how I can export the complete Lightbox with all selected pictures/cuts of a film (first frame), as stills or pdf? Is it possible?
No. Use gallery for that.
Once the material is in where is the original material kept? Can you keep all that you have done on the show for many years so that when you call the project up is all of lightbox information still there? Is it the same as lightroom in respect?
Hi chuck. No this is just an extension of the clip thumbnails. If media isnt present it will be lots of Media Offline icons
really good video. We can talk hours about lightbox.
Glad you liked it.
Great tip - it doesnt seem to work on dual GUI screen setups?
Yes it does.
Wow! Who knew!
Amazing tutorial Darren, i never used that tool. May I ask you something? I have a MB Pro M1, an external display and an iPad Pro, is it possible to use the two physical displays for editing and the iPad for the clean output? So you can check the results in the iPad? I can't do it and tried everything. If it is complicated could you make a show video? Would be really appreciated! Thanks!
Hmmm...not sure. I know you can use iPad using the MAC 'sidecar' feature so that may do it. Not got time to try for you Im afraid. let me know if it works ??
@@DarrenMostyn I did it, in settings I added the iPad for mirroring the MBP display, then In Davinci I can see 3 "Monitors" two for editing and the other por the clean signal. Thanks!
