Omg i cant believe how much you just leveled up my understanding of these terms with the diagram and explaination with it. You are the MAN!! Definitely subscribed. Thank you so much
I've been working with computers a long time....don't think I've ever heard it explained better...especially when it comes to video editing...thank you!
I have a desktop computer with an i5-4590, a GTX 1060 6GB, and 12GB of ram. All the parts are relatively old but it edits wonderfully. You definitely don't need the newest shiniest computer parts for editing. My CPU has 4 cores and was released in 2013, and my RAM runs at 1600MHz when the current standard is nearly double that now. I have a 500GB SSD and a 1TB HDD, and most of the time I edit footage from the 1TB without issues.
I've been involved in computers since 1965. Operated an IBM 7070 and 7090, also the IBM 1400 series of cpu's and printers. My last purchase of a computer was a Toshiba Satellite, C855 SERIES WITH about 640 gb hdd, 64 bit hd graphics, 4gb ram. Am video editing 1 hour videos and I can take a vacation during the time it takes me to upload to youtube or to convert from mini-cam to mpr. HOURS! I SAY ALL THIS TO, NR. thank you for the best video tutorial on how to shop for my new video-editing machine, which I probable wont be able to afford if I can find one with the specs you just so beautifully presented. THANK YOU BUNCHES.
WOW. Excellent content. I’ve been searching for this but all the other videos assume I know what everything means. Way to bring it back to the basics and give clear, knowledgeable advice. Thank you so much!
Processor: Intel Core i5 (as of August 2021, I recommend the 11th Gen, but anything above 8th gen is okay) RAM: 8 GB GPU: 4GB Storage: 512GB SSD (I don't recommend HDDs) [If you have a low budget, get a 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD]
Writing this second time. First while watching video. Now after completing to watch video. I needed video editing laptop. After going through dozens of buying guide articles and watching another dozen of videos I was still not sure what to buy. After watching this video I now have made mind what to buy. Such simple video that each word has gone inside my head. Thank you so much.
Thank you, such a clear explanation! I'm moving from professional photography to video and it's such a scary leap, so confusing about what a proper video editing workstation should be. Your "lesson" was very illuminating, thanks so much!
This is the best explanation i’v ever seen about computer technology, i needed someone to explain the basics that simple and you just did it in a great way, huge thank you for this excellent job 🌷
This is the best explanation I have ever seen. Salesman, people who know about computers, etc, they always make everything so difficult. Now I understand it. I know about Film and Photo's. I do not want to know about computers. You helped me very much!!!
Took a lot away from this 11 min video. cleared up a number of grey areas, so thank you! Could you tell me where to determine if you iMac/MBP has an integrated or dedicated GPU please?
I love the analogies used to explain how each of the PC components work, it was really easy for me to understand, and that's coming from somebody who has never built a computer before
You, Sir, are at the very top when it comes to technical expertise around computing procedures as well as tremendous communication skills. Professional posture, spotless wording and a sharply organized mind, you certainly display a perfect notion of what your target audience WANTS and NEEDS to learn. It has been a pleasure to follow your cristal clear teachings, not only about the subject presented here but also about the series on the DaVinci Resolve editing abilities which, I confess, have been of a great help to my line of work. Thank you very much, and bring us more.
I found this to be more directed toward laptops... My suggestion is that you go with, at minimum, an 8-core 16-thread CPU like Ryzen 2700x or I9 9900K, and go with either a Vega 64 or RTX 2080, both of which have 8GB of VRAM. For RAM, 32GB seems to be the sweet spot - but at least 64GB if you plan to use heavy After Effects. Sure, you could buy less and get by okay, but you're going to have to deal with proxies on some formats and such --- and the cost difference really isn't that massive. Also, you don't really get to choose rather you want DDR4 or DDR3 ram - your processor selection will determine that; all modern processors like i7s and Ryzens use DDR4 only.
For 1080 up to 60 fps, that is overkill. But for 4k, your specifications are recommended... Also you need ssds to get quicker access and smaller render times.
@Aug 18 any gaming PC or Laptop with the mentioned specs at a minimum is perfect. If it has more, great! You can also buy workstation Laptops or PCs with said specs but they are way more expensive due to more professional type CPU, RAM and GPU. They are not needed for any home made videos.
After 20days of thorough research regarding the specs that are required for best video editing software, I think all my doubts are pretty cleared now, Thank you very much it was very helpful
I am in the market for a laptop for video editing and had no clue about computers or what I needed. Thank you for sharing your knowledge... people like me who don't understand at all in the beginning, must really appreciate a lot your brief and not complicated explanation like other youtubers..Good JOB!!!
I just watched a free masterclass. I don't even do video editing. Nor can I afford a laptop. But the explanation was so elegant that I couldn't stop watching.
So, I have MacBook Pro 2018 with i7 6 core up to 4GHz, 32GB ram, Radeon 560x 4GB, 512Gb SSD should be ok ? Sometimes CPU acts like crazy burning while even playing clips in DaVinci Resolve 16 Studio. Is it configuration I should change?

WOW! Thank you for this brief tutorial. Your simplified explanation to the computer compartments did not make me feel intimidated. And you presented yourself with humbleness. Thanks again.
Nice👍. One thing that I found makes a huge difference is the software. With FCP X you can do a lot with mimimum specs, Edius is also relatively easy on processing particularly because it a smart buffer that looks ahead in the timeline and uses available resources to calculate more complex parts of the timeline before it gets there. Premiere is average and Resolve needs really heavy equipment. Do you agree?
Laptop specs $800 - $1399 4 cores or 6 cores i7 850h or i7 950h Gtx 1650 or gtx1660ti 16gb ram or 32ram (you can start off with 8gb and upgrade) 256 ssd or 500gb ssd for programs and 1tb hdd for storage
For a laptop, is it a better idea, for a GPU, if it is intergrated, to have more RAM? So a Intergrated GPU, but 12GB of RAM? Specs such as this: 12GB DDR4 RAM//Integrated Intel® UHD Graphics 620, DirectX 12 Support
Would love for you to revisit this subject. GPUs and CPUs have changed a LOT in the past 2 years and now we have the M1 to consider too. The "old" perspective was that you had to have a powerful GPU to get great performance. The M1 shows this is no longer a universal truth.
