In one second of listening i am like "what am i hearing"!!!!!!! I could not believe my ears...honestly my ears have never heard anything like this before..thank you God for giving me the gift of hearing!!! Thank you
If this be the speed at which he executes his music on the violin, I can only wonder at the speed at which the notes play in his head. Raw, pure, true unadulterated, mind-f***ing-blowing genius! This guy was born for the violin and the violin was invented so he could play it. They are made for each other.
This is the best video description on YT, period. With one (unimportant) thing missing - L.Shankar is also known for Lestat's violin solos from Queen of the Damned. Kudos to the uploader, I feel the same about Shenkars oeuvre
Thank you so much for posting this segment! I'm a trained carnatic musician and a theoretical physicist. I play the Mridangam, Ghatam and a host of other percussion instruments. My obsession with Shakti and the music of Dr.L.Shankar and Dr.L.Subramaniam began about a good 9 yrs back. :) I've listened to almost every album of Dr.L.Shankar and Dr.L.Subramaniam. Abheri by Shankar is the crowning glory of all forms of music this crazy music lover has ever heard.
I discovered L. Shankar years ago and I could not agree more with the description... ""the guy who does the Heroes title theme." But before he (presumably) burned out and began degrading himself making shitty pop and new age music, L. Shankar was one of most brilliant musicians of the century. " Amen brother
No word in any language in the world is sufficient to describe the beauty of this Shankars legendry aubum. My regards to the grate Artist shri Shankar as well as to the person who frist uploaded this album....
@MrAmenx I have first heard him in the secret world live peter gabriel show, at the end of Blood of Eden song. He did such an efect I immediately started looking for some music of him. It was before internet and I had to place a special order on the Raga Abheri album. I never got bored and listened to it hundreds of times.
God Bless Shankar for giving me countless hours of ecstasy, peace, bliss and sheer joy. People like him are born few and far between to show the rest of the world what music actually is - A bridge between the real and the Surreal. Dear Dr.L.Shankar, If you ever happen to read this, please know that I have recommended your music to a helluva lot of people and crazy music lovers like myself and continue to do so. Contd...
Just wanna tell you that, the music that comes out of your violin is mindblowing, arresting and spiritually uplifting! On behalf of many crazy people like myself, it is a request that you perform atleast once in India in the coming years, preferrably in Bangalore(my home city) :) Peace, A Crazy music lover.
If you think he degraded himself by doing some modern music, you are wrong! He's opened up a whole new world in music. Introduced the sound to people who may never have heard it before. I know I wouldn't have searched him out if it were not for that shitty music you referred too.... I love the fact that KoRn and JD embraces different music and cultures... open your mind, enjoy the music!!
Brilliant, but the most brilliant is his cooperation - interplay - with Jan Garbarek and Trilok Gurtu on the Song for Everyone album. Check it out, you will fly away!
awesome piece. been hearing it continuously for over two hours. is there a piano between 1:25 and 1:40 or did he do it all with his double violin? After 3:30 it almost feels like someone were singing. he plays it so well.
There's no piano. The technique is called pizzicato. L. Shankar's extremely dexterous and he can perform tough left hand pizzicatos with amazing speed and precision simultaneously while bowing. He does play his creation, the double violin so well. I couldn't agree more.
Not sure if its overdubbing or not.. I do not care.. The end result is mind blowing. Tears swelled in my eyes listening to this beautiful rendering of Raga Abheri. Pure bliss.
thank you m3psi this is l.shankar at his best. his command over the instrument is bar none. then give him a double violin. savitri on Who's to Know is my favorite, his ragamalika unmatched. he was an imspiration in my music. -arunnj25
my favorite album so far was Vision with Jan Garbarek accompanying Shankar with saxaphone. man it sounds like whales under the ocean. good stuff. this is killer too.
lucky you! pancha nadai pallavi is one of my top 3 favorite "stranded on a desert island" recordings. funny that i bought the CD used for $5 where it had seemingly been rejected and unappreciated.
***** You, sir, are a true gentleman. Thanks! I'm going to check them all out. I've been searching for goosebumps-inducing music for quite some time now. Greetings from Ukraine
I was just wondering exactly how he uses the double violin, because you hear him play some really fast intricate stuff in unison, and a few harmonies so it sounds like 2 people playing and the only possible explanation just from hearing it is that he's either dubbed himself over or has some sort of pedal where it plays an octave down, it sounds impossible to play what he does on two necks with 2 arms. I couldnt find any vids on youtube, but I was hoping for an explanation on how he does that.
@mufty1qwer33 As opposed to vibrato, the technique employed here is one of bouncing the bow on the strings while drawing it across. This requires an amazing amount of bow control.
Could you please explain what's the purpose of indian music? It would help a lot to understand your opinion, which as you see is opposite to most of the others, and for this reason i'd love if you could share it and help to understand the piece in itself :)
check out pancha nadai pallavi on ECM records. i think it's his best work in this style. the recording quality and tone of his violin is the best of any recording i've ever heard of him. i was blissfully unaware that he was doing crappy commercial themes now, and plan to stay that way! thank god i got to see him live maybe 6 or 7 years ago playing with zakir hussein in this style.
That makes sense. However, that is the case, why create a double violin to begin with? Why not use two violins - one with normal strings and the other with the lower pitched ones.
This sounds very much like who´s to know, only shankar record i´ve got, really, a great album in my opinion, but yet it´s 15 years gap between the two...at what point did the artist fall into newage stuff? his 2000 release eternal light, his last album, as far as i know, is still serious stuff.
@flamingisland he is everywhere...i would estimate about 70 diffrent albums ,from talking heads to zappa....this album is the deepest statment i know....sometimes it vivaldi.....only three players..... this is the difinitive jazz........ improvisation.........laxshmi shankar....eight limbs....
In one second of listening i am like "what am i hearing"!!!!!!! I could not believe my ears...honestly my ears have never heard anything like this before..thank you God for giving me the gift of hearing!!! Thank you
THE VERY FINEST ON EARTH THAT IS POSSIBLE.
This is the first time i have listened to Shankar's music and is is so enchanting 2 hear! He's a true musical genius.
I had never heard such a beautiful rendering of rag ABHERI.

Can abheri rendition be so electrified!? Amazing!!!
It can be. L Shankar proved it 🙏🙏
This is the best video description on YT, period. With one (unimportant) thing missing - L.Shankar is also known for Lestat's violin solos from Queen of the Damned. Kudos to the uploader, I feel the same about Shenkars oeuvre
That's how I discovered L. Shankar's music. :D Through Queen of the Damned.. especially the part at the beach when Lestat played the violin solo.

A very apt video description. Shankar is an eccentric genius, for sure.
Majestuosic.
Agree with you that, this is divine music. My wish for 2009 is that, L Shankar will return to his roots
Is it fulfilled now? :)

Really world is missing u,
Eargasm!
Amazing
DIVINE...
Divine!
Genius 🙏🙏
I wonder what he does now ... Somehow disappeared from the music scene ?
Genius
Soulful
does he play all togheter?
Though he's a genius, it's not humanly possible. He plays on two necks separately and then mixes the tracks.
Incroyable
Divine.
