We have been busting out these projects with an end in sight. The end of the grind is nigh, but we're not there yet. We want more diesel for redundancy, safety and peace of mind. And we are keeping our water tank, because can you have too much of a good thing?
Did I mention that we got hit!? SV Turtle (‪@ForSunandStars‬) decided to pay us a visit up close and personal! This is the first and hopefully last time we get hit by a rogue boat!

Okay, I have read several of the comments and I might as well chime in. LOOSE the toolbox. Put your tools in smaller batches according to use. Electrical, plumbing, etc. Stow your tools in areas close to where you most likely will be needing them for repairs, e.g., engine area, electrical panel. That huge toolbox looks like it will not only be a lot of weight when it is full, it will be difficult to use and get into. You are basically adding a heavy place to store a large amount of air. The fuel could be added below the floor in a couple smaller tanks and that would actually help with the ballast rather than raising the center of gravity with the large tank. This is why you haven't seen anyone else do it the way you are trying to do it. Cut your losses and undo your project. Time will tell.

      This....... 100% agree

    • @CaptAdam500
      @CaptAdam500 2 роки тому +26

He's right. Cut your losses. That tool box is going to start rusting immediately and dissimilar metals will rust out your tools. Also, it's going to be really noisy. The locking mechanism on the drawers won't hold against sloshing back and forth so securing it will be a nightmare. If you ever need to open it to retrieve a tool in a seaway, you're going to see how quickly those roller bearings move. Even if you figure out how to secure it, at a minimum, you'll be listening to things rolling around and knocking all night long on the hook. Try small plastic tool boxes (and tubs as noted). Add a canvas rigging bag as your go to kit. It'll sit easily on the deck or wherever needed, resists rusting and keeps the tools quiet and safe. Is there no room under the bunk to place fuel tanks? You could harvest all the plumbing but get them down low to help your c.g. But better still is to just drum extra fuel the few times you need it. Three 25 gallon drums sit easily out of the way in the cockpit or laserette the few times really needed. A small 12v transfer pump is easy. Then no smell (and that tank WILL smell), no risk of leak, no blocking access. . . . ain't UA-cam comments fun. :)

Couldn't agree more. And those flimsy straps are not going to keep a heavy fuel tank secure during a storm. Bad idea. Please don't do this.

Those toolboxes are pretty light and the drawers are solid if locked. It will be nice to have tools in an area that's easily accessible. They should lightly oil the tools and drawers because of the corrosion threat. The toolbox will probably last a few years.

I was diagnosed with a highly agressive metastasized primary lymphoma of my thyroid about 2.5 years ago. After three rounds of chemo and some radiation it appears that the doctors cured my cancer. I will be boating solo through the Northwest Passage this summer. I am hoping your friends have a similar outcome.

I cannot express how incredible you two are and how lucky we feel to have you as our friends during these crazy times. Your video was so touching. Thank you for taking care of Turtle like she was your own. Sorry she's just like the puppies and likes to be right up in close with you guys! She's an extrovert and get rambunctious. You went above and beyond and there will be nothing we can do to repay you except make you a whole bunch of yummy food. Fantastic video as always. And one day, we will sail together again and swim with mermaids.

That poor woman fighting cancer at such a young age, in 2015 I lost both of my parents and my fathers brother my uncle to cancer all within 4 months of one another. I have an illness because of an operation that went wrong however this illness can turn into Pancreatic Cancer at any time so I basically live on a knife edge but I try and live a normal life. I’m retired now due to this illness I also have a Beneteau 54 which I love , it’s based in Liverpool marina
UK . Please pass on wishes to your dear friends and I hope she has a speedy and full recovery.

Another vote for rethinking the tool box. And as for the fuel tank. I'll hold off comments until I see how well it ends up being secured. When full that's a lot of weight to keep in place when you get out on the ocean in heavy seas.

I wouldn’t put your gas tank and water together. The VOC (benzine) vapors from the gas can get into your drinking water or if it spills it can dissolve the plastic of your drinking water tank or water lines. I’ve seen it many times.

OK, that tool box is way overkill! Like others have said, split them into smaller groups according to their usage. There are some great smaller canvas tool bags that would be perfect, Craftsman I think. More important point of your posting is the fact that your friends are having to fight the cancer discovered! God Bless you for taking care of their boat while they get situated near the hospital treating her!

Tool box is a big mistake, better to get tool rolls and keep them close to where you will need them. We have some under the starboard seat by the wheel, we have our handheld dewalts under my half of the main bed. Be aware of how you are distributing the weight around your boat. We have most of the tools we need for the engine in by the engine. We also have some tools in our Center table in the cockpit. We have plenty of redundancy, nothing like your 12mm spanner dropping over the side of the boat.

Hi Guys, love your videos. Just a bit concern about the fuel tank being that high. They should be as low as possible as far as I know. Also afraid that with the fuel tank and the tool box, if you need to access the hull in an emergency in rolling seas, to take all of this out of the cabin.
We keep nothing in the boat that could hurt us in an emergency and make sure access to the hull is available as much as possible, since in rolling seas will no be possible to dive under the boat. This is just concern truly from our hearts. We love you and keep up the videos and such a good work. You are a true loving couple. All the best from the crew @ Sailing SV CUBA Enrique and Sarah 🥰

I use my Leatherman nearly every single day, I know what you mean. I lost my first one during a move and could not wait until the new one came, now it is on my belt 24/7.

I love what you guys are doing but I also hope that you reconsider the fuel tank and tool box in that aft cabin before you put to sea again. Aside from any trim and stability concerns (those items will add quite a lot if weight in a somewhat extreme position) I can attest from experience just how violent the motion can be in that aft cabin in even moderately rough seas on a Beneteau 54. It’s a long way from the pivot point of the keel and mast.......

Foam spacers around and under the tank. Under you could use a yoga matt an similarly under straps to protect against chafing.

It is possible to put too much crap and weight In a boat...keeping it simple often has virtue...turn the project tap off and sail is a good idea

Use a roll of tape pulled backwards to get rid of the fiberglass itches, or a lint roller. I worked in a fiberglass factory and literally the only thing I found to help

Good job on turtles water maker. I would also stow it's dingy on board and drain it's fuel tank. Way easier to start back with fresh fuel than to fight bad gas. I would also make sure that um the waste tank is empty. Maybe some antifreeze??? Your thinking up to what 9 months? So yeah she is possibly going to sit over the winter unless they continue to live aboard. Which I would do $$ is tight enough.

It was great seeing you guys today. Safe journeys to the Bahamas! Good thing you didn’t join me on the sandbar. I drug anchor. Yikes.

Where ever and however you end up installing an auxiliary fuel tank, might consider adding thermal insulation around the tank. Fuel returning from the engine will be hot. It will heat up the fuel in the tank and radiate the heat into your cabin..

I use Sodium Metabisulfite or "Campden Tabs" in wine making. It is used in most wines as a preservative and in cleaning and decontaminating equipment, similar to bleach, but no nasty smell, and throughout the fermentation and racking process before either bulk or bottle aging. It's used as a preservative in many food products as well.
It is also used as a bleaching agent in processes like paper making. It is relatively safe in low concentrations like you were working with, but it is an irritant, and a salt so a dessicant. Luckily you broke the tablets wet because the powder is especially harsh and irritating when inhaled. It is also rough on your digestive tract in high dosages because it increases the acidity of your gi tract, and like any sulfite can be fatal if enough is ingested. But at doses of like 10 grams or more. Shouldn't cause any lasting irritation on skin as quickly as you diluted that few of tablets in 5 gallons of water, but in the future definitely take precautions not to inhale it or get it in your eyes, as it can cause permanent eye damage.
