When In Doubt, GRINDERS Out...(again!) | Expedition Evans 58

  • There's nothing like busting out the grinder to bust through a big project. We decided to make the leap to LiFePO4 batteries and they needed a place to go. Last summer Jade finished the fairing and painting of the bilge solo - with the exception of the battery areas because too many heavy batteries were in the way. Taking the batteries out for the big switch provided the perfect opportunity to finish what we started last summer. We armed ourselves with grinders, epoxy, squeegees, and this time around - gel coat. And then we got it done!

Here's what we think we know about her past. Keep in mind we bought her at auction without ever meeting the owner! The owner was sailing along and ran aground - hard. Hard enough that the keel pivoted and pushed the aft end up into the hull. This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made. See • We Buy a SALVAGE SAILB... for how we came to own her!

So glad to see you two using harness, tethers and jack-lines even on a nice day like that. Keep it up, don't want to lose you two. Thanks for the great adventure so far. Having owned several sailboats and having done much maintenance on them, I fully appreciate the tremendous effort you guys put in, but in the end the result is a beautiful yacht you'll enjoy for a long time. So. keep using the tethers!

But did you know that composite lightweight approved safety shoes ($55 At Costco) can take a weight of 1.1 tonnes, which is more than ten of those large batteries, resting on your toes. Human bare feet don't do so good with just a single 75 kg battery. So my wife tells me.

"Ferret..not the animal " ...you guys are awesome! I appreciate you! Jade, I would have cried too. Thanks for including that and keeping it real and raw :). I watched your most current video (in Guatemala) before I watched this and then got myself confused. I was like "they had batteries delivered to Guat! Wow.". Then I realized you were still back in the US. Great job, y'all!! Smile amd have a blessed day!

Wow. Yet again , well done you two. You will have the most immaculate bilges ever seen.
One small alarm bell I have going off though . At 21.20 in this vid I see you put that 25hp engine in gear and move off slowly. But the Red Bungy Kill Switch cord is left dangling. It SHOULD BE as automatic as putting on a car seat belt! Loop it round a thumb. Automatic, every time. If the skipper falls out ,the torque of the engine will turn it hard left and the boat will go hard right at whatever speed already set. And come right back and over the skipper in the water .
Sadly did once see the aftermath of just this in Trinidad. The skipper stopped the propellor with his face! Yachtie friends, including a nurse , got him to the hospital in a taxi . He survived, but it was a very long time till he went cruising again,,,,,

Agee, my ex, a very experienced pro fisherman, needed to use someone else’s dinghy, the motor started in gear, which it shouldn’t do, he didn’t have the kill cord on, he was thrown overboard and the prop cut him really badly on his back and head. He was an hour away from medical help, plus over 4WD tracks.

    • @farout1220
      @farout1220 2 роки тому

Agree 100% about fastening the kill cord. The best outcome you can hope for if you fall out is several hours of diving to miss getting hit by the dingy while waiting for the fuel to run out, and the worst is getting hit and being badly injured or killed...

I always bring my dink with the beam to the boat... for boarding or deboarding. I tie the bow eye line and one of the two stern lines to hold it beam to the transom. I have a boarding ladder however.
Easy for loff loading stuff too.

Your skill with layers glass is getting way better than mine will e er be. Good work. I cant wait to critique your new battery wires. I have half a century of electrical and electronic experience. Your new batteries will fail early if you use slap-dazzle cable lengths between lithium batteries. They are way more critical especially with hybrid serial/parallel circuits. The cable lengths need to be exactly the same. If not one battery or more will take all the load and recharge cycles and fail early. Make sure you know about cable length idiosyncrasies of lithium batteries. Good luck.

Wow more boat projects. Funny, someone this week asked me what it is like owning a sailboat. My answer was, "boat projects". I think they were confused. However ever weekend there seems to be boat projects that need to be done, we just find time to sail between, boat projects. Last week whole walking down the marina there was a guy bring down fresh wood to his companion way, boat projects. Yep more boat projects, just measured for new halyard. I do not know if we love sailing, or just love boat projects.

I'm also becoming aware of this, having seen many boats for sale with a list of items to do.
I think as a toy this would be too much: but as a home, you have the time, money and focus because you are not diluted among other projects.
I.e. it's a way of life, rather than a casual use item.

Hiya Mr & Mrs Evans, what wonderful teamwork. You two are a great couple, from the way Jade described the work, she was to do the prep alone while her other half went for the battery bank. Here let me say how brave you are Jade to show the mishap and the extent of how it affected you. I would have cried too, and I'm a 6'4" 250lb ex-electrician. The mummified cables? If there is a next time just use saran wrap, so much easier. Sorry for calling you Jades' "Other Half" but I'm very bad with names, and Jades' was written in the notes. Could you put your names there to help those of us who struggle? Setbacks like that are indeed part of life, and you show your depth of character by how you recover, and how quickly. If I was right and Jade was to do the work alone then it showed his love that he just got on and helped.
Thank you to you both for a very wonderful, and revealing film. I worked for years doing lighting and power for film & TV, and your videos are beautifully lit, filmed, edited, the sound is good, wind allowing, in other words, very professional films!!!
    Stay safe, Steve...

Hi, love your channel. But why go to all this trouble for a battery box, just take the rough off and use bilge paint the batteries don't mind. Flocoat over epoxy isn't ideal, hope it sticks!! MEK and epoxy dust are pretty toxic then mix acetone thinners, not nice and bad for your health. Look forward to next part of your battery conversion as we are going the same route in the future, bye, bye lead acid!! Good sailing!!!

lead acid can produce a huge amperage, good for starting diesels. good for ballast, too. have u, considered a dual system--- its the inverters that have come down on price most. electricity is so vital to navigation regimes-- a redundancy system in an off grid system is nice to have. esp. one that will crank that diesel.

I really enjoy these videos ! Quick tip from a non expert but a lazy man if you want to mask cable’s use aluminium foil. It comes right of after the job masking tape is not easy to get it off. Keep up the good work!
