I just need to say I love both Grimm and The Child with all my heart and I will never banish the troupe on a casual run. I'll do it once for completionists sake, but any other time I'm completing the ritual. I'm actually doing a run where I obtain companion charms asap and never take them off, even if it overcharms me. I've never felt so attached to a fictional character before
I accidentally banished the troupe first time round out of curiosity, and at this point I’ve gotten so used to having Carefree Melody that I don’t know what I’ll do in a run without it. Still mourn for Grimmchild though, thought they’d stay with me :(
One of my theories about Grimm is that when he does his stagger, each of the grimm children that we see represent a kingdom that the troupe has both visited and had a completed ritual. Since you can choose to banish the troupe and end the ritual early in the game, there might be other kingdoms where the ritual wasn't completed
Ooh that's cool! And seems logical They are the other Grimm children that matured And some kingdoms didn't complete the ritual, so they never got a new Grimmchild and Grimm became older (and maybe weaker?) Love this theory!!!
There's a problem here. The ritual is ended because the knight is not controlled by the nightmare heart and is free to decide for itself despite the lack of a mind and brumm seeing hallownest and deciding it should "be allowed to rest" and rebeling. He also says he will only make the exception just this once. Unless members rebel alot I don't see that being the case. However the grimmchild group in the stagger could be other grimmchildren that did complete the ritual as the red eyes only apply to the grimmchild when it has the nightmare heart and only one grimmchild, who can be hit and so is most likely grimm, has those red eyes in the stagger
@@robert.7230 it could just be that the person who they tasked with raising the grimmchild failed their mission with the grimm troupe, by dying for example
8:30 Rain and thunder don't necessarily indicate the surface. For example, there was a NASA building that was so large it started to have its own weather conditions inside.
In grimm's stagger state he turns into a bat and when he is found sleeping upside down hanging from the ceiling. He is definitely supposed to be a bat.
9:40 I actually think he's a batwing butterfly, specifically a red-bodied swallowtail. (It looks a lot more like him). The vampire connection might be that bug pinners find them harder to kill without ruining their wings than other butterflies. Pinching their thorax, which kills most butterflies, just stuns them. Their caterpillars also eat a plant called birthwort, that looks a lot like the Nightmare heart.
Grimm is absolutelty one of my favorite characters of all time! He looks hot literally, Best boss fight ever, Perfect OST, looks cool, and the Lore and story
The idea of the Grimmkin using their masks as conduits actually does make sense, as all the warrior dreams have something physically existent that tie their ghosts- that don't know they're dead- to the real world Markoth has his body and Dreamshield, No Eyes, Gorb, and Marmu have stone statues in honor of them, Galien has his old weapon, Elder Hu has an altar and necklace, Xero has a grave. Since all those bosses were once alive, and relatively powerful, they are able to interact with the physical world but require something to project from, right? So maybe the Grimmkin ghost things were never really alive to begin with, and are just Nightmare constructs that lack anything physical to anchor them, so they use the masks as their mediums.
Has no one ever thought that Zote, pronounced Zo-te, could be a reference to Don Quixote( I have seen many different ways of writing the characters' name) , with the whole knight of great renown thing?
I wonder... did the Nightmare Heart was able to see into the Knight true form? I mean as a Void being, cause if it can subjugate bugs will to it bindings, why didnt he do it to the Knight? Here is what I think, every member we see in the audience was actually someone who had done the ritual before hand, but never had the troupe being able to fully finish the ritual last dance, so they all get trapped in the nightmare, but when Grimm saw the Knight, he saw the golden opportunity, a being of Void, able to exist in both reality and dream and influence both, and someone able to complete the last dance, the troupe didnt disappear because the cycle repeated again, but rather, because it finally got completed, Grimm Child is no longer bound to the nightmare relm, but through the Knight, became a real being, HE is the troupe now, it is now all in him, in complete physical vessel created thanks to the ritual with the unknowing help of Void
LOVE the scene at 19:18 - 19:26 . Considering that The Knight & The White lady are Son & Mother technically. When One dose that “Equip all Badges” Hack which includes the various Partners that can assist the Knight. It makes it look like a Small Family gathering with the Knight introducing his “Mother” to all Her new “Grandkids” that he adopted. C:
Maybe a vid about steel soul mode, with its changes and new npc (Jinn) could be next And also I heard once that Grimm is supposed to be a moth because of his dream/nightmare connection, but also a bat because what scary night animal both connects to vampires and eats bugs? Bats. And the Grimm Troupe uses fire themes a lot because of the phrase “a moth to a flame”... that’s it for me.
I've always thought is was weird that the ritual with the Grimm troupe has no real downsides. I mean sure, Grimm could kill you, but anyone who's a decent fighter can beat him. And once you're done, you have an angry murder child who fights for you. It just seems odd that a higher being such as the nightmare heart, which binds it's members to it and has one of them basically kill himself, doesn't take more from the bugs that participate in the ritual
Good point; I figure the knight, being a void creature, doesn't have much to take. It has no soul, no dreams, no nightmares, and seems resistant to the control of higher beings, so idk what use the heart would have for it beyond completing another cycle.
the nightmare heart wants the flame from the dead kingdom, there isn't really anything it would take from the knight, even if there was it would be a bad idea for the heart to handicap some one bound to the grimmchild (the heart's vessel). Plus if void creatures can contain and kill the radiance they might be able to do the same to the nightmare heart if they tried so it might no be a good idea for it to pick a fight
all the ritual takes is the energy of a dead or dying kingdom, that seems more like recycling than evil doing to me, and why does grimm even kill you? He's probably not going full strenght in his fights but still seems ok with the potential killing the centerpiece of the nightmare ritual wich seems stupid
@@An_Entire_Lime he says the passion of the fight is what fuels the grimmchild to mature, if he went too easy on you it probably wouldn't work, so he either goes easy and certainly fails or goes hard and maybe kills you but maybe succeeds

Theory: the bats in the grim fight are all the past grimchildren/vessels for the nightmare heart and represent every ritual completed If there is evidence pointing away from this can you point it out in the comments
I counted the bats and, assuming I didn't miss anything, there are 16 of them. The same number as orbs in that chart thing. So if the theory that those are the places the Troupe visited before is true, then yours might be plausible

6:12 *Nightmare Essence Theory* A theory of mine is that well-according to this hint here of some sort provided by NKG, I’m thinking that the line ‘Nightmare Binds all’ means that there is Nightmare essence everywhere. Lighting the Nightmare lantern possibly causes the essence to show itself, and allow the Grimm Troupe to harvest it for the Nightmare’s Heart. I don’t have much evidence from this one line and my theory isn’t a solid claim, but I just wanted to share what I have so far :D Thank you for reading up to this point ^^
I've gotten into Hollow Knight recently and when I saw Grimm I just can't help but think of Stolas from Helluva Boss. I know Vivzie's art style is inspired by Hollow Knight and Invader Zim. Among other things I bet. But I can't help it. Same eyes, same head shape, wears a cloke and has demonic powers. I wonder if others experience this but vice versa.
@kasetrey3156 yes. But did Stolas exist before or after Hollow Knight. I've been following her since her Timber(her school project animation) video. Also, you can still take inspiration from other artists even when you already have a established art style. It's about improving it and applying things you really liked from them. Or just plain fan art. Vivis art style while the same since her first video, it definitely improved in quality that it honestly looks like two different styles when you compare her oldest video to her newest.
@@Padre_des_los_penitentes i remember watching a video documentary esc of her showing off her old sketch book and explaining her inspirations and such. I don't have the best memory but I'm pretty sure Hollow Knight was brought up in discussion
That's not void. That's just stylistic. Not every single pixel is a clue. There are also no other signs or text based clues etc. that suggest that the Grimm Troupe is connected to void.
@@LuperisNone What about the fact that, according to his Dream Nail dialogue after the first fight, Grimm knows of the Pale King and the Vessels? Not to mention that the Void is the archnemesis of the Radiance, who probably had a large influence on the Dream Realm the Nightmare Heart was once bound to. I don't think the liquid in the tents is necessarily Void, but I think it's safe to say Grimm and the Heart are at least aware of its existence.
@@Dinoman972, of course, as a higher being Grimm aka the nightmare heart would know that void and other higher beings like the pale king etc. exist. But I don't think Grimm is an ally to the void or something.
Did you know: While the Knight is able to have light shine off of them, Grimm is not. You can see this in the official Grimm Troupe artwork. Does this make Grimm... Super Void???????.?.?.?.?.?.?.?.????????.?..?.???..
Since Divine specializes in charms, (well she doesnt really specialize in them she just kind of shits them out), maybe her role is to convert the grimmchild into charm form for the convenience of whoever is helping them. Idk why shes left behind when the ritual is completed though.
Shes left behind so that you dont find out too late that you screwed yourself out of getting the unbreakable strength charm. I mean, maybe they came up with a lore reason to hold it together, but that's 100% a gameplay concession.
I actually belive that the Grim Troupe is inspired by the 1950ish novel 'Somthing wicked this way comes.' I'm which there is a traveling Carnival similar to the Troupe, and better yet... the leader, named Mr Dark, feeds off of the fears and nightmares of the towns they travel to. So I thought that was a little interesting.
5:24 That's just how wind works. Warm places have hot air, which goes up, but something has to fill in the gap - so colder air rushes in from all directions and you get wind. It's literally normal for it to blow towards one specific spot, it's just that there are so many "specific spots" that you don't notice. The question should be, how is Hallownest hot enough for the wind going there to be enough to guide travelers across the entire desert around it.
2:35 as someone who was once studying to be a theoretical physicist specializing in cosmology, that hurt. "Once studying" because I quit after 6 years of struggling. That was more brutal than attempting Pantheon on Hallownest of Steel Soul.
@William King She was during the alt-rlght era, so no more for a couple years, I feel like mossbag is either discovering this lore or starting to assume using it in an ironic fashion. The hollow knight community seems to be quite a dominance of "woke nerds", that means we understand and appreciate the form of this post-alt-rlght internet culture, it talks to us at the "autism" level, and shyly we start to feel we have a right to return and reuse this humor even if more orthodox extrovert Twitter or RL left won't really understand it. Also the influences of global postmodernity of these absurd times, the rebirth of the qveer leftism on the internet by the Trump era, some feelings of existential nihilism and postmodern humor... all that stuff had a lot of young insecure right-wingish manosphere guys and eggs of 2015 find out they were depressed closeted qveers themselves, notably trans women, some gay, bi, sub and/or femmy guys; so this form of humor became pretty much of a cultural identity in broader gaming or anime subcultures, probably more than anywhere in metroidvania's fandoms and speedrunning communities.
Re: the map and the game being outside or not: I remember Leth saying in a stream chat that the official lore was that the entire game takes place underground. Relyea or Rusty had said that it all took place in one night because you never saw the sun, and then Leth said his piece. I couldn't tell you which stream that was in or how serious Leth was about it. But maybe just message him?
I somewhat disagree with your reasoning behind why Brumm rebelled. His dialogue makes it seem like he believe Grimm is also trapped in the endless cycle, and it is his desire to free his master.
@@Padre_des_los_penitentes Grimm obviously wont, but Brumm's specific wording when dream nailing him at the Distant Village is interesting, claiming that they are all "vessels", and wondering if they could be more, which could partially be referring to how Grimm is a vessel for the Nightmare Heart
I love the fact that he either wanted a longer WARNING text at the beginning or knew that many people would read all the way through and did it on a whim.
The beginning of the game is in King's Pass, but if you take a specific route in the Howling Cliffs, if you jump down, you go to the same place as you start the game. If you go to the top of the Howling Cliffs and try to crystal heart through to escape Hallownest, the WINDS blow you away so you can't escape. It blows to DIRTMOUTH, where the Grimm Troupe arrives, and it leads to HALLOWNEST, just like how they say the wind led them to Hallownest.

And seems logical
They are the other Grimm children that matured
And some kingdoms didn't complete the ritual, so they never got a new Grimmchild and Grimm became older (and maybe weaker?)
Love this theory!!!
Copied comment

The idea of the Grimmkin using their masks as conduits actually does make sense, as all the warrior dreams have something physically existent that tie their ghosts- that don't know they're dead- to the real world
Markoth has his body and Dreamshield,
No Eyes, Gorb, and Marmu have stone statues in honor of them,
Galien has his old weapon,
Elder Hu has an altar and necklace,
Xero has a grave.

And also I heard once that Grimm is supposed to be a moth because of his dream/nightmare connection, but also a bat because what scary night animal both connects to vampires and eats bugs?

Terrestrial isopods, like pill bugs, do possess gills through which they're able to breathe. But despite the fact that these gills must remain humid for the bug to live, they don't allow for the bug to survive underwater. So.... sad fact. Although I did hear that they *could* be able to live for a short while before drowning, but I'm no entomologist lol and that would mean Quirrel has been holding his breath and chilling at the bottom of the lake for a long while now. A theory of mine is that well-according to this hint here of some sort provided by NKG, I’m thinking that the line ‘Nightmare Binds all’ means that there is Nightmare essence everywhere. Lighting the Nightmare lantern possibly causes the essence to show itself, and allow the Grimm Troupe to harvest it for the Nightmare’s Heart.

Or it could be another liquid.
@@Dinoman972, of course, as a higher being Grimm aka the nightmare heart would know that void and other higher beings like the pale king etc. exist.
I don't know however how Grimm knows of the vessels. Maybe he just knows because he's a higher being and keeps tabs on kingdoms that may fall to ruin.
Maybe she's the one waiting for the Grimmchild to grow completely and take over the nighttime troupe so they can continue the cycle again and again
Like you said she's technically "specialized" in charmd
Does that mean she eats the Grimmchild and shits it out as a charm
Shes left behind so that you dont find out too late that you screwed yourself out of getting the unbreakable strength charm. I mean, maybe they came up with a lore reason to hold it together, but that's 100% a gameplay concession.
I actually belive that the Grim Troupe is inspired by the 1950ish novel 'Somthing wicked this way comes.' Warm places have hot air, which goes up, but something has to fill in the gap - so colder air rushes in from all directions and you get wind. It's literally normal for it to blow towards one specific spot, it's just that there are so many "specific spots" that you don't notice.
The question should be, how is Hallownest hot enough for the wind going there to be enough to guide travelers across the entire desert around it.

She was during the alt-rlght era, so no more for a couple years, I feel like mossbag is either discovering this lore or starting to assume using it in an ironic fashion.
