  • Despite many operations and updates, the mappool for CS:GO remains largely unchanged since 1.6. Why? And what would it take to change that? This is what I think of the matter.
    0:20 - Current mappool
1:32 - Why stick to the same maps?
    2:41 - Maps since 1.6... why?
    3:52 - Valve's influence
6:05 - What about the new maps? How did they manage it?
    7:42 - Brute-force of removing old maps
9:15 - How to make new maps valuable and conclusion

Isn’t it weird how the cs community is? Every other FPS community love new maps and would even pay $15-20 for them. While the cs community gets them for free and completely ignores it.

When inserting a new map, they should also add a corresponding Valve made skin collection such as the ones we saw for overpass and cobblestone, and add skin drops from the map collection or even an xp boost from playing on the new maps when added to the game.
I don’t personally play cs that much anymore but I think those aspects were ones that could potentially attract new players as they were similar to what attracted us to the maps that were added in 2014 that we know and love today

If a map has night time, id play the shit out of it. Sort of like Tulip. A map that isn't just day time. Maybe if they added day/night time maps that would go from day to night time after a set amount of rounds. That'd be interesting.

I really think they need to add 1 map at a time. Maker it an event. If you win 20 Competitive games on that map you get an exclusive skin that can't be traded or sold. This will make people grind the new maps and learn them. If they learn them they can actually good feedback instead of people saying "the operation maps are trash!". At the end of the event (I'd say one month) the map will get a final update and a new map would be the focus.
I'm really disappointed that Canals has had barely any updates. I really wanted Canals to be a good competitive map overtime. Just like Overpass.

I feel like if map makers released "standard smokes" for each map it would really help give them popularity. Grenades are such a massive part of the game that entering round 1 without any pre-existing knowledge of where to throw meaningful, strategy influencing smokes is such a disadvantage it can throw push people away from trying maps they've never played before -- especially knowing the other team may know some.
Shit, I don't even know that many smokes for the major maps I've played before, but the ones I do make all the difference. If the map creators gave everyone some of the same baseline knowledge, then it could make the maps playable for all while rewarding those who decide to spend some time and discover new ones.

    • @RobDYT
      @RobDYT 6 років тому +8

Also, when new maps are added a lot of youtubers make smoke tutorials. What would be good though is if valve added a community discusions to the home page of csgo, (rather than the tab thing) and then pinned tutorials and usefuly community informations, that way people would have better access to these sorts of things.

    • @dankwarmouse6248
      @dankwarmouse6248 6 років тому +10

@HaM, lol I'm not saying I want to win every game, but you can get stomped by people who know smokes that you don't, and getting stomped is the opposite of fun.
Also my original idea was to address the general population of Counter Strike, and most people (at least that I've encountered in my games) are pretty much only interested in winning.

    • @zgaminggallery9910
      @zgaminggallery9910 6 років тому +4

why don't you invent your own smokes?
I had trouble remembering the smoke spots on several maps so I just tried them out keeping the minimap in view and I gradually perfected it. I didn't even need to watch tutorials for that.
This is called learning instead of copying.

The problem, as I see it, with new maps, are that they often are too complicated, visually and layout-wise. Take a look at cache. There really isnt much going on there visually, besides maybe some stuff in the background. Simple colors and easy-to-learn paths. Some additional paths to open for variable strats (boost mid, vents). I also believe maps are better when you can «feel» the edges of it, like you’re in a box, makes it a lot easier to navigate. The same goes for elevation. If there’s going to be a lot of elevation, it better damn be well thought through and have a specific purpose, otherwise it is easy to get confused by where sounds are coming from etc. I believe the reason maps like Canals failed so horribly (other than the complete design flaw on the A site as well as mid) is that the map is really hard to get a good feeling on, of where pressure is being added to the map, of where the enemies can be (on both sides) with all the corridors and elevation diversities. In conclusion: Don’t try to make it so damn fancy! Make a solid mid, b and a template, make paths for each, and then add some cover and other nessescary elements. Look at Shipped, all those yellow railings are nothing but distracting and annoying!

I think competitive community maps being another section that can be played and have a seperate rank from your actual competitive rank so that youll have a rank for the classics (dust 2, inferno, chache, etc) and then a rank for community maps, I think it'll be good for players who haved played a lot and are getting bored of the same maps, and it would also allow people to give love to community made maps. It could also mean if you want to play competitive but dont want to risk deranking on the classics, then you could just play the community made section.
    Just some thoughts.

  • @Hyderomastgroningem0
    @Hyderomastgroningem0 6 років тому +14

I do, I always have in the 2200 hrs of CSGO I've played and I have always hated the apathetic mindset of the playerbase towards new maps. From the beginning of every Operation to the end of every Operation I almost exclusively play the new maps because I know that it's a game experience I'll never be able to relive again once it's gone forever. I have no regrets sinking heaps of time into sick maps like Mist and Empire and it's so painful to have to wait 30 minutes at peak hour just to get a match on them, only to be matched with people who didn't realise they had the map ticked and get frustrated within a couple rounds and can't be communicated with because they don't know any calls. My rank also got inflated so playing on AD maps was a massive struggle.
Agency getting into the competitive pool really blows my mind. There's no good reason for Agency to be the most popular Operation map besides Cache. It's terribly unbalanced, has almost never been updated, and gives extremely few options for CTs to work with. I have no doubt in my mind that if there had never been Operations, and every Operation map was introduced to the playerbase at once and a popularity contest was run to boil it down to just one favourite map, Agency would be one of the most disliked. It's pure chance that it got played, and thus learned (partly owing to how simple it is) by enough people to become a "favourite", and then it being re-voted into Phoenix and Bloodhound certainly didn't help. It goes to show just how little the community is willing to try out new maps - and so Agency, for me, stands as a symbol of everything wrong with Operations and the mindset of the playerbase and how these things completely ruined the potential of community maps.
Put it this way - if Santorini can't become popular, nothing can.

Case in point - scroll down the comments section (or any Reddit thread talking about community maps) and see how everyone very strongly wants just one particular map to be reintroduced from an Operation. There's no pattern to the popularity of the maps, some people will want Bazaar, some want Season, some want Ali, but nothing seems to be the most popular because so few players ever even played more than one or two.

If valve hyped the workshop more. There is no incentive for me to look through the workshop at up and coming maps. I do it anyways because I enjoy keeping up with the map making community and exploring new maps is fun for me. But most people aren't like that. It's not the players fault either.
Let's say valve were to reward the player for looking through the workshop in some way and upvoting/ downvoting maps then more people would interact with the map making side of the community. For most people the only memorable map maker is FMPONE when there are many others that make beautiful work. The difference is that Mr. ONE was supported by valve and the competitive community. Casters, players, even Thorin refer to him with some kind of great legacy even though Volcano had most of the ideas and spent the most time working. Not to discredit FMPONE, he does a great job and I'm looking forward to Subzero but most people couldn't care less about map makers in general. The map core contest going on now is probably the most hyped map making event the community has ever cared about and most people still don't know about it.
Now that I've rambled for 5 minutes let me get to the point. If valve were to reward people for playing new maps then people would actually care. If you win 100 rounds on seaside then you get a pirate sticker and glock skin. If you play 50 matches on de_sparity then you get a special tombstone with your name on it, to attach to one gun like a name tag. People would enjoy these and search them out. If valve also made them non-tradable (never going to happen) then people would care even more about playing them.
But hey, that's just the 2 cents of a kid that plays too many video games.

I wish csgo had unranked mm for all these 'clutter-maps' that were cut (burned) away. No i mean not the casual mode or some modified version of mm, but a mm that doesnt affect ranks but uses the current ranks to find the most fitting enemys. Maybe this unranked keeps your rank updated (so you wont lose it due to inactivity) but you cant evolve from there without the 'real' maps. For ranked mm you could have a reserve group again and all the maps cycle through active and reserve. Again reserve group maps should then have only half as much impact on your rank regarding up and downranks. Operations would take place just as before adding the operation maps to the active group. Then if any map gets cut out after any operation it gets removed from ranked mm and put into unranked. I know this system has its faults - its complicated and slow - but it would keep the tactical gameplay of a 5v5 on cut maps at least in the game for some fun rounds. When you totally want to confuse your enemy on vertigo by steping right below them or try to get knifekills in z on italy or have some sick wallbangs on assault or ... -you name it. Just for some light hearted fun on those maps. And no one risks his precious rank with this. I left out the part about trolls - I know they will flood unranked but I want to see the bright side. I hope at least some will read this and maybe someone takes notes and sends them to valve.

I nearly never play mm, get global, then stop playing 1-2 Months, lose it, have to rank up again and so far and so furth. In the time between I don't play or play faceit/dm, I would play unranked mm way more often. Communityservers are not the same.

That's what it should be. Casual is a shit gamemode for all players but hackers. In Rocket League they have casual as the "unranked competitive mode" as you can play on the exact same ground, but there's no rank. That's what VALVe should do with Casual, and I hope they do.

I also mean fluidity with the map list, so that the community could actually stand a chance. Perhaps they should remove and add maps every month, depending on which ones are more popular? But then the op ended, it was removed to never be played again. Sometimes we play it 2v2 sometime, but its sad to not be able to properly play it anymore.

  • @migueeeelet

What would make me play a new map? A different game.
CS is too goddamn competitive. A more casual game like CoD will benefeit a lot more from a bigger, changing pool of maps.
It's mainly because of how the Competitive mode works. No respawns and a lot of punishment if you don't know what you're doing (which applies to you knowing the map) is infuriating when you try a new map. This is what forces the pros, as you've said, to learn every nook and cranny of dust_2 instead of try out canals, for example.
And annoyingly, this is why tournaments use dust_2 instead of canals. Which also leads to pros learning dust_2. Cause canals doesn't have 500k$ tournaments.
However, Deathmatch and Arms Race are two modes that can benefeit from more maps. Or your prototype "capture points"! Respawns, a more forgiving gameplay, a constant push-and-pull feel, etc. While Competitive is a game of penalty shots in Football, Deathmatch is the entirety of the match.

i think familiarity plays a part, but also like you said, experience.
first you learn the map itself. then you learn how it plays, meet points, good angles, camp spots, lurk routes etc.
then you learn the nades to counter them, how to take sites, common strats and plays, the meat of the csgo experience.
starting from scratch on a new map is a huge investment of time into something that might just not be as good as mirage.

The thing is I like playing other/new maps, but there are some problems.
First, I like being competitive. You talked about the disadvantage of not knowing the map. That happens to me a lot, but not in the same way. Me and my friends that I hopped in a game with know the map pretty well, even some smoke and grenade spots. But the other team doesn't know the map which makes us win 16-3 or even lower rounds for the other teams. That makes us feel like we are playing with bots as the enemy team is running around trying to figure out the map.
Secondly, queue time is pretty long for some maps. In order to play canals with my friends the other day (I am master guardian 1) we waited about 22 minutes in queue, and people didn't even accept the game so we just played dust 2.
Thirdly, if I feel uncomfortable in a map I can never play it even though when I like the design. Like nuke, I can never play it. For me to play a new map I need to feel comfortable, which a map developer can't do, its my problem.
And lastly, as everyone else, I like to focus on a few maps and play them as well as I can. I mainly/mostly play Mirage and Inferno, then Dust2 and Nuke sometimes to try to get good at it. I don't usually play Overpass but other than that I don't play any maps beacuse of the reasons I stated. Its too much effort to put in like Canals call outs and etc. As nobody plays the map and I get an unfair advantage there is no need to waste time.
For me to play a map it needs to be balanced in teamwise(ct sided-t sides wise). Thats it. I don't need anything else to try out a map and like it and keep playing it.

I loved to play new maps with 4 other people that i knew, becouse it was so funny and we had great time learning the map especialy with multiple funny situations happening becouse of lack of knowledge. If you play with randoms you can get some non-english russians or child griffer and that will make your time a lot worse comparing to normal maps becouse you can easly mute them on dust2 and still play pretty efficient but on new maps, communication is the key to success. My favorite maps from operations are Agency and Zoo

As you said, it's nice to play maps that you know. Having a sense of timings, knowing a few tricks and strategies, and being able to pre-aim angles makes play more fun and satisfying for me.
I always at least try all the operation maps and will continue to play the ones I like. For the most part, I'd say I prefer the simpler maps with less clutter and gimmicks (though these can be alright in moderation). The previous operation I really liked Austria, but I'd say my favourite operation map was Bazaar, which was basically a big ol' Dust2 (if I remember correctly).
Hard to say what would really make me or anyone else continue to play a new map, because it comes down to if you 'like' it or not, which is often a very mysterious feeling.

when new maps come out, we're all surprised by how beautiful they are, which is how the maps mainly make it into the operation releases. thats great and all, im all about bringing beauty out of an old engine, but thats simply all the maps are good for. in the current map pool, with the exception of canals, all of the maps dont have much detail or fluff. when playing canals its so easy to not know if youre looking at someone or a wall until the name pops up simply because they blend in. mirage is such a loved map because the player models contrast fairly well with the textures, which gives for great response time and most importantly putting you at fault for getting/not getting a kill. if new maps had familiar layouts (b main, a main, mid, maybe an alt mid, ect) itd be easy to play and learn. canals was the exact opposite of that. mid is, well, i really dont know, bombsites have no fall back positions/good cover, and theres a bunch of meaningless walkways. we need to be able to make adaptive plays and create smokes and pop flashes that dont come out of one specific way.

Also, I'd very much like a bigger incentive to play the lesser played maps, such as higher droprate for cases and even skins.

I think that if Valve fixed casual and made it actually fun for beginner and advanced players it would be much easier for new maps to be played. If players had a mode where they could learn new maps it would be very possible for the active duty group to change over time. Valve began to make changes in the latest update to casual by mixing what used to be the "active" and "reserve" pools. This makes it so any player queuing for casual will have a chance at playing a non-active map. So with this system kept in place and a change to the integrity of casual I think that new maps could be accepted by the community.
Some ways that Valve could improve player's attitude in casual are:
-Matching you with players close to your level but not as close as normal matchmaking
-Placing the 10v10 format into the "war games" section that was added in the recent update
-Give players some kind of minor punishment for leaving such as a 30 min cooldown
-Instead of playing only 1 side to 10 points maybe have it played like wingman and have it be to 9 rounds
Just an idea but I really think this could help

I know It may sound dumb, but a practice mode. Something with callouts written on the map or perhaps the play could say them as you walk there so you could hear it. Then make walls you cant shoot though make a funny noise when shot.
Maybe best of 6 with a side swap on round 3 and tie on 3,3. Then you would know the callouts, the bangable walls, and you wouldn't have it instalock the winingest side to practice it.

Season was quite popular , and was longtime member of faceit mappool .... i think it was just a simple map and therefore more likely to play competetive than e.g. vertigo

I'll play maps that have been tweaked from the competitive map pool right now. Like if someone changed nuke and cobble to test out I would love to play it.

I loved csgo, then it got repetitive and felt like every round started and ended the same way. Me screaming Cyka Blaaaaaat, and me dying a shit ton. Havn't booted the game up in weeks. I want new maps to switch it up

I loved all the maps like Aztec and militia that no one ever played, whenever community maps or operations come out, I always find myself playing the new maps rather than the old ones, and I usually like them more, even now, I mostly play office and agency

Something that I think would make me personally play more of not only new maps, but CSGO in general, is a competitive game mode with fewer rounds. I imagine this would be possible if they rebalanced all the equipment costs, cash rewards for winning/losing/killing and stuff. This would result in shorter matches which makes would make me play more, because I don't want to be stuck on the same map for such a long time when I just want to "play a round of CS".
The shorter matches would also mean I'd be more comfortable trying out unfamiliar maps, because unbalanced matches would be less of a pain to sit through.

i play the same maps not becouse i love them so much, i play´em bc my friends like to play them. I´d love to play new ones, community or Valve made, but the time you have to wait is mostly really long and you choose a map where you just have to search for a few seconds.

I love every maps to be honest,I go to the workshop every month to search some news interestings maps to play it with my friends. In MM I play all competitive map, depend times (sometimes I'm good on such map and an another day I'm feeling more confident on an another one),but when we want to play for fun we used to play on Vertigo or any "uncompetitive" map.And to be honest I love when a new operation comes on cause there is some intersting maps to discover and unlikeky as Vertigo,Aztec,Assault or any "uncompetitive" permanent maps (who have been retired) sometimes there're some good potential competitive map where you could see one action from Coldzera.Unfortunately I missed the best era of OP map cause I play since 2014 only ,but I noticed some good map, like "Log".but I still don't understand why they removed "Season" which was even play in Online pro games and which has been remastered. This map was awsome...Same for Tuscan, many pros miss Tuscan and un remastered and a new chance would be insane for this map (by the way this is not really a new map but It would add something fresh).By the way If valve wants to test new maps thay can count on me.But I just wanna say that playing on unconventionnal map doesn't deprive me to be good and knowing stuff and Overpass,Mirage or Inferno for example, just man stop play only dust 2,you can learn more about the game from others competitives map ;)

Community tournaments(kind of like how epic games has creator codes) the map maker would have to be verified, they could start a tournament and choose a verified community map and the winner gets a skin from a case or something , I feel like that would make people try new maps

I play old maps because I've given the effort to learn them, and I don't want that effort to be in vain. But once, every map was new for me. And I'd play it simply because it was new and I enjoy different experiences sometimes, that's also why I play new maps, because they're new and I want to see if I will like it.

All the maps we love such as Dust 2, Mirage, Inferno, Overpass and Cache have a simple layout but are yet very complex. I personally feel like the maps needs to be suitable for a competetive environment; require alot of teamplay and tactics. Smoke strats are important imo and all the maps we love are great for smoke strats and exploding onto a site. Maps such as Aztec, Vertigo and Canals don't have that same competetive feel with the smoke strats

This is a very old video, but I still like to think about it from time to time. I think what keeps ME from playing new maps is similar to yours. I'm not very good at CS, so I think my time would be better spent on the maps that I play with my friends all the time so I can get better and become a better teammate. But now, I'm going to give new maps a chance, at least in botmatches to learn the layout a bit and try something different. The new(as of Operation Riptide) Wingman map, Ravine, was great fun when I played it for one of the missions. I think it works...some of the time. With Broken Fang, they got too overzealous with Ancient and most of the people I talk to say that it was pushed too hard in that Operation and that they now avoid it. It's a balancing act and I believe Valve is getting close to perfection.
Although, they're still trying to force Danger Zone down our throats with those missions even though to do the missions, you need to be on a specific map. But if it isn't in the rotation or you failed to complete the mission, then you have to wait for it to rotate around again. I feel like they should probably have a look at that and either allow players to queue for the map they want, or make missions apply to all maps. But now I'm getting away from the initial point. I digress.

If I am being honest here, theres nothing that going to get me to play a new map if I know that if I play it I'll lose because other people might know it already, but a loss isn't the actual deterrent, it's the fact that you might derank or get closer dranking if you do lose. The obvious solution to this is, and I've been advocating for this for years, an unranked matchmaking alternative. A proper 5v5 with all the penalties of comp except for the elo loss or gain. This would also lower A lot of the toxicity thats associated with csgo.
