A lecture by Antoon De Baets (University of Groningen) organised by the Trinity Centre for Resistance Studies in partnership with the Trinity Long Room Hub.
Antoon De Baets is Emeritus Professor of History, Ethics and Human Rights at the University of Groningen, and coordinator of the Network of Concerned Historians. He has worked extensively on academic freedom, censorship and abuses of history, and the ethical implications of writing history.
Professor De Baets' lecture explores the various strategies historians have developed to resist attacks on - and abuses of - their profession. It provides an analysis of the repertoires of resistance historians adopted in dictatorships and will reflect on the possibilities of safeguarding academic freedom in democracies.
