    Looking forward to your channel this 2021.

    NIce vid. Would like to see the FZ in action. Seeing these emulators makes me regret selling my EMU-ESI now but that was a long time ago.

      I've definitely got an FZ-1 video planned as this beast is also a seriously powerful (for a late 80s sampler) hybrid synth.

    Really cool, I might do this to my FZ-1. But I have to think about how to backup my floppies to disk images first.

    • @rejectedsynths
      @rejectedsynths  2 роки тому

      Usb Floppy Drives are readily available, I guess finding the right software to back up the disk images is the harder task here. Maybe anyone can recommend something?

      You can probably read the FZ-1 floppies on a PC with BUILT-IN/INTERNAL floppy drive (NOT external USB floppy) and software like OMNIFLOP. An internal drive has a full floppy controller to read the disks at low level, which a USB floppy drive cannot do.

    With mine, there's a folder where you can batch convert all files to hfe at once btw

    Never managed to get a DX7II FD (floppy disk!) to work with one of these...I've been through all the tutorials and firmwares - but it's never recognised by the DX7II. Can't be that hard to emulate whatever the DX7II is expecting to find on the end of the cable?

    • @rejectedsynths

      Actually there are quite a few parameters, that have to be just right for these to work properly. Took me quite some time to figure these out for the FZ1

      @@rejectedsynths Fair point, just struck me as funny/astonishing that a 720K floppy drive from 1988 could baffle us compatibility wise in 2024! We've lost so much!!!LOL

    Great Video! I am attempting the same with my FZ-1... I have the rotary oled gotek using flashfloppy and have matched your jumper settings and config file - I can load .hfe files into the FZ-1... but... when I sample a sound using the FZ-1 and try to Save Voice to the USB blank image I get a NO DISK SPACE error - any ideas on solving this would be really appreciated! Thanks!!

      @rejectedsynths  3 місяці тому

      Hmm, it's been a while but I think you can erase/format the virtual disk from the fz1s internal tools. Maybe try that. Just a dumb question, but is there a chance the samples are simply too big to fit on a single disk???

    • @GavinLittleEcholab
      @GavinLittleEcholab 3 місяці тому

      @@rejectedsynths Hey - Thanks for the quick reply!! Yup, I tried with a very short low rate sample and it gives the same - I'll try erase/format the virtual disk now, thanks for the suggestion! I'll let you know how I get on

    How about a video on connecting FZ-1/FZ-10M to a computer via the expansion port? (The later FZ-20M had SCSI instead.) It's been done with a custom cable, software has been written for PC-DOS and converted to Windows XP. Info online if you dig around...

    • @rejectedsynths
      @rejectedsynths  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Jeffrey, thank you for your idea, I'll see if I can get this up an running. Software can be emulated but finding a parallel port on a pc in 2021 might be the biggest challenge here though 🙈

    • @ShallRemainUnknown
      @ShallRemainUnknown 3 роки тому

      @@rejectedsynths Lots of retro-users keep old Win XP systems with built-in 3.5" floppy drives to read/write old format disks, and those likely have parallel ports, too. Since YOU'RE now officially a retro guy, maybe it's time to get one! They're easier to find than an FZ-1 these days, probably not much money, either. (Maybe even free...)
      Possibly there's a USB to parallel adapter that would work? If you Google and/or check online forums about this, you'll get the low-down...

    • @rejectedsynths
      @rejectedsynths  3 роки тому

      I've got to admit, as a retro guy, I have about half a dozen PCs from different ages stored away somewhere, but as someone living in the 21st century, I'd rather look into ways of making old stuff work on new stuff. The real bottleneck in this case being the parallel port, the rest can probably be emulated 🤔

    • @ShallRemainUnknown
      @ShallRemainUnknown 3 роки тому

      @@rejectedsynths There are 25-pin parallel to USB adapters for UD$3.50 shipped on Aliexpress and full 25-pin parallel to USB cables for US$13 shipped on Amazon. Whether those will work with modern PC and Win 10 directly or a Win XP emulator running under Win 10 needs to be worked out/researched.
      There are a bunch of other issues w modernizing/upgrading the FZ, but you can Google to find active forums discussing developing solutions, if you're interested. Also, archive.org can be used to access old, closed websites with info. Good luck and cheers!

    • @rejectedsynths
      @rejectedsynths  3 роки тому

      @@ShallRemainUnknown Once again, thank you for your input! I've already had a look at these usb to parallel cables and it looks like they are specifically built to work with printers only, other timing critical applications, like the one we're approaching here are probably bound to fail :(
