The 9 foot Steinway sample is incredible! I had three of these until recently, but I still have one and hundreds.. HUNDREDS.. of sounds for it. I wanted one for decades! I can't imagine parting with my current one. I also have the VZ-1, VZ-10M, and the VZ-8M which is designed for the MIDI guitar I also have. LOVE Casio equipment!
Thanks for this video! The FZ series are a wonderful example of the early vintage samplers, and as you said, they were actually more powerful than many of their more expensive contemporaries. Other famous users were producer duo Coldcut, who also collaborated with UK singer Yaz, EMF (possibly used it on their hit "Unbelievable"), Japanese composer Kitaro. and an FZ-10M was used extensively by the legendary Aphex Twin in his early work. It was also popular in recording studios thanks to its affordable price and great feature set. Anyway, your video has reminded me as to how good they can sound. I must dust down my FZ-20M and get exploring it again!
Sorry for not following this up sooner. It's definitely still planned. I've made the mistake to start work on multiple video ideas at the same time and now I'm torn between these projects, actual paid work duties and familiy obligations 😅

I do love my Emax and DSS-1, but I’ve always wanted an FZ-1. They can do interesting things to samples that modern samplers still can’t do. Unfortunately, like the DSS-1, it suffers from its convoluted UI and sample storage hierarchy.
Can you chop up samples (like the amen break) and have the chops set on different keys? Or can you modulate start point of the samples using the key tracking/note number? Also is it multitimbral? Just asking for a friend ;)
I hope to find out soon, as I will do another video on sample editing with the FZ1 next. I can already tell you it's multitimbral in the sense that you can set different midi channels for individual patches that are combined in a bank. The 8 voice limit might be an issue though
If you're still interested here is the aswer 😁: 1. There is no autochop on this machine. At the time this sampler was released there was no autochop. Even on computers it wasn't a feature until Zero-X was released for the AtariST (at least this is the first one I know). When you want to have multiple single drumsounds of a drumloop on your keys you'll either have to sample the drumloop a few times and trim those according to the drums you want or you can sample the drumloop only once but copy it as many times as you want. BTW these copies don't fill up the memory cause they are just links to the original sample. You can process them independently (trim, filter etc). Tip: before you copy make sure you set the start and endpoint of the original and discard the before&after cause as soon as you copy you won't be able to do that. Oh. A thrid way to do it (the way I do it most of the time): Sample the drumloop, set start and end of the part, discard before/after, save the loop, load the loop as many times you want. I prefer this way because I mostly use only the 4-6 best drumsounds of the loop so keeping the rest of the loop would waste samplingtime. After trimming the sounds you can place them on the keyboard as you like. 2. No modulation of startpoints. Not in 1987. 1988 the MPC60 was released but I don't know for sure if it has the feature (the MPC2000 can moulate the startpoint but that feature is only useful for 'experimental stuff' but not chopping a loop precisely). The E-mu EOS series can do it to but only 127 steps so with a drumlooplength of lets say 3 seconds every step is ca. 23ms. thats too coarse to be useful IMO). In case of the MPC its even worse cause the steps are not equaly spread on the whole sample but...🤔 ok I'll stop. Sogar das Diskettenlaufwerk funktionierte einwandfrei (Umbau kommt bei mir nicht in Frage). muss mal sehen, wie man den Datenaustausch zum Win95 Rechner (oder meinem Atari ST) hinbekommt. The sample, that is a from a collection of breakbeats directly sampled from the source records, was recorded from a tablet to the line-in of the FZ-1. The juiciness of the sound is the FZ-1 doing it's thing I guess
I picked mine up cheap and it does sound incredible, great crunch and the filter is wonderful. But, the screens are a major issue. Mine has a crystal leak in the display that's a real pain to deal with. I can't find a 3rd party replacement for it and I doubt a functioning screen board will come up for sale any time soon.
Someone on facebbok mentiined that this is the exact display type used for the FZ1: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casio_fx-7000G If this is thrue and they are actually compatible this would be relatively cheap replacement
@@rejectedsynths I have one of those for that exact reason, the problem is connecting the flimsey flex-cables. Literally the worst I've ever seen. The cables are bonded to the LCD screen and circuit board, I'm not even sure the traces on the three separate cables align properly. Great synth, absolutely garbage screen.
And you won't find one. But keep an eye on the machines offered and you will see they are never sold for the alsking price. After a while, make an offer and you will get a 'cheap' machine. Patience is key as the asking prices are mostly insane these days for anything 'vintage'
@@mdahut 200 is a good deal I'd say. Make sure to check the display for leakages before you buy though. Contrast can be adjusted by holding the display key and moving the data input slider. Unresponsive keys can be cured by disassembling the keybed and giving it all a good thorough cleaning
I have used it for a little under a year now and it easily became my favorite synth in my small collection. I feel like a young 90's AFX. Thank you so much for making a video on it.@@rejectedsynths
Sadly this keyboard is overpriced on eBay USA and as such is NOT budget anymore. You can do so much more with modern hardware that can be gotten NEW in Guitar Center locally for the same price or less! But it is undeniable that CASIO of the 80s has that charm and nostalgia I almost would pay overprice for if it were not for the pesky need to pay bills and food and gas lol!

1. There is no autochop on this machine. At the time this sampler was released there was no autochop. Even on computers it wasn't a feature until Zero-X was released for the AtariST (at least this is the first one I know). When you want to have multiple single drumsounds of a drumloop on your keys you'll either have to sample the drumloop a few times and trim those according to the drums you want or you can sample the drumloop only once but copy it as many times as you want. BTW these copies don't fill up the memory cause they are just links to the original sample. You can process them independently (trim, filter etc). Tip: before you copy make sure you set the start and endpoint of the original and discard the before&after cause as soon as you copy you won't be able to do that.

These banks were often used in many tracker softwares usually by dumping the rom through and extracting the sounds from source
