I've tried all sorts of brands shapes and configurations over the years. I use 2.4mm 2.7mm 3.0mm and 3.3mm regularly. I only use round line except the 3.3mm which is square. I surprisingly recommend Stihl as my favourite but Oregon is on a par with Stihl. Currently using some 2.4mm Echo, it cuts lovely but wears poorly and tbh can't wait to get back to the Stihl.
The Oregon Star Line I think it is called is a bit aggressive a cut for your border edges, but I do like it in my smaller strimmer if I need to cut bigger stuff. Years ago I bought a big reel of 2.7mm round line, I can't remember the make but it cuts cleanly and you can knock it up against the walls and have loads left. I have not tried any other Oregon product and in my smaller strimmer, I am using 2.4mm round Stihl Line.
Nice little diversion from the saw world James 👍 Well all I can say is I never felt any of the shaped lines worked better than round line, and I just keep my line stored away from sunlight, and I usually chuck the roll in a bucket of water, just before use. I use an alloy manual feeding head which holds heaps of line, and has 4 slots on the outside, you jump the line back a slot each time it gets short. Its the same head that our council guys are using. Its my least favourite task in the lawn care dept, if I'm honest 😅
👍🆙RD, What type of trimmer do you like or have? I enjoy my trimmer time! I'm going 2 port one of mine here soon for a little more torque. Try and see if I can get it 2 run with some of the 30+cc trimmers. Would like 2 be able 2 carry @ a 21.5cc w/ pole saw attachment that can run with the huge 30+cc powerheads.😁
@@Doc-Cole_Trickle-of-Chainsaws Hi Doc. I have a Stihl FS 75 which is cool but a bit small. And an FS 450, which is great but almost a bit too grunty for string, it spends a lot of time with a solid Tri blade on 👍
@@rakersdownnz Nice trimmers, the 75, that's the curved shaft model of the FS80&85 series? Love that series(75,80,85) powerhead, light, easy 2 start and hard 2 kill! Hard 2 not constantly keep breaking the trimmer line with that 450
@@Doc-Cole_Trickle-of-Chainsaws My 75 is straight shaft, inherited from my father in law, is probably 35 years old and still loves WOT all the live long day 😆
I have a 30 year old FS76 that is 30 years old until recently it has worked perfectly. It will need a new clutch soon and Stihl has discontinued it so I am keeping an eye out for a donor! @@rakersdownnz
Tried a bunch and ended up on Oregon Techni 280 which is very good for the gravel, rocks, grass, brambles, steps here. It'd be a different story (maybe square) if I did mostly green stuff. I'm no expert but head RPM seems to dictate the sweet spot for lines just as much as personal preference does. I notice a big difference in RPM between 3.3mm and 2.5mm. Around 2.5mm seems to give a really wide usable power band, letting me full throttle heavy stuff and be able to half throttle grass and dead stuff.
@@walkerscountrylife Haha, honestly I owe it all to the guy at the dealership who talked me out of buying a new strimmer head earlier in the year. He was going on about RPM, technique, line welding. Clearly not the best salesman, but I'm getting way more life out of my line now
I dabble in trimmer, blower and push mower fixing 4 family and friends. Got sucked into the chainsaw community a couple of years ago looking 4 a good dependable easy 2 operate/start chainsaw. Something my Dad and sister could use if needed. I enjoy my trimmers though, had a roll of orange Stihl trimmer line 4ever but about 2 run out and haven't thought about if I'll change or go with the same, price may sway my decision. Do you know about keeping your trimmer line hydrated? Never done it, haven't had mine ever get brittle 2 where I thought it needed hydrating.
@@walkerscountrylife have you ever come across any line that become brittle? I have, it was on an old trimmer I was working on but hadn't heard of hydrating it 2 rejuvenate it at the time. Supposedly you are supposed 2 dunk/submerge it in water for a day or so ever so often 2 keep it's durability/bendablity.
