  • Over the last forty years, NASA has been employing space telescopes that can detect infrared radiation, which is not visible to the unaided eye. Insights about the origins of planets, stars, galaxies, and even the entire universe can be obtained by studying the infrared spectrum.
The James Webb Space Telescope is the latest infrared space telescope obtained by NASA, which provides new information on objects previously studied by earlier infrared missions.
Successive missions have progressively unveiled stars, galaxies, and many cosmic objects with enhanced clarity using a space telescope that detects infrared radiation. Displayed here are photographs captured by the groundbreaking Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS), launched in 1983, the Spitzer Space Telescope, launched in 2003, and the James Webb Space Telescope, which commenced operations in 2021 and is currently providing highly detailed images.
