I'm always surprised that most schools don't teach how to balance your accounts. Like, I know checkbooks are an outdated concept, and perhaps I'm old for still keeping paper check registers, but I'm super on-top of my expenses because I'm writing things down manually and seeing with every purchase and deposit how my money changes--it's work, but by comparing receipts to my bank statement and paper registers, I can always spot errors. I learned how to balance a checkbook when I was 11, in the late 90s, at a public middle school. This seems like a basic math skill to teach kids, because that same math teacher also made us do projects discussing state economies and the major products each state uses, produces, imports from other states, exports to other states. It was highly informative, gave a great idea of how each section of the country functions.
I think the biggest problem with getting a well rounded education in the public schools of the USA is the apathy of the children who "see no use in such skills", the parents who don't support their children's interests (no matter what they may be) and/or the lack of available extra curricular subjects. Our education system isn't teaching our kids the most basic of life skills anymore: Most people have a calculator available so just knowing the formulas for the multiplication tables up to 10, "% Off", "+% Tax", how to calculate interest rates over time, and double-entry bookkeeping would help keep our citizens out of debt. How figure out the (yearly) requirements for raising children and animals (cats, dogs, hobby and food fish, chickens, cows). How to grow food/crops including chemistry of soil and water. Basic sewing and clothing repair. Basic carpentry, basic metal working and/or mechanics. Basic chemistry with units in cooking, food storage and cleaning. Basic biology, human health and first aid. Something I think kids would be interested in learning (as extra curricular activities) are anything they like to do in video games; FPS, Survival, City Building/Planning, RPGs, Exploration, Music, etc. They all have their own set of skills required to learn and incorporate various maths and sciences necessary to achieve goals and complete tasks.
I fall asleep to their videos. Not cause they are boring...i watched most videos multiple times. I watch it before bed since they are soothing. One day I'll meet a pretty lady and get some farm animals. 💓
Yesterday I learned a new skill. I now can say I have removed a broken front doorknob that wouldn't unlock. Had to watch several Videos first. In the near future I hope to master the skill of installing a new front door doorknob. When it costs over $100 for someone to just drive out here, lots of motivation to figure out how to do things myself.
I'm not a kid, but at 33 years old, I sometime wonder if I'd prefer to handle a small farm rather than trying to make website projects works and get on the constant mess of dealing with other people... lol
I'm a few years older than you and actively working to get out of IT and onto a farm! I love IT but I'm no longer interested in working on projects for other people, I want to do things for myself!

Thank you for treating Toby with such kindness. I have seen a lot of LGD owners treating their investment like a chainsaw. LOL mini-quakin' ! Thank you for showing your pastorale farm and a shot of Lil at the end. So great things are slowly healing. She looks really good.
You are spot on with the things that you really need to know to be able to efficiently run a farm. As a city girl (old girl at that) I am amazed at the skills of the homesteaders I watch (and the lack there of for newbies) have. To be able to hatch a baby chic and in the next breath they are fixing or maintaining their huge equipment. Then tending ailments of their animals etc. You really do need to know a lot. You have done very well I think with your carpentry skills. The duck house is just amazing both design wise and carpentry wise. Keep up the good work. Have a Blessed day.
The best way to become "mechanically inclined" is do it! I learned a bunch of stuff without UA-cam - it's crazy easy today. Chances are there are multiple videos on whatever job you need to work on. Never thought I would change a timing belt on a car but I've done it three times now. Just stop telling yourself it's difficult or special - working on machines/electrical isn't any more special than carpentry. There are steps, learning tricks to improve the next time, giving yourself permission to screw up and not freak out/quit when you inevitably do. You touched on this in your video and it was great - so just extend it to the mechanical stuff too :)
Duck and Toby faces to start my week! and it's so funny watching the ducklings treating you like a big baddie! I smiled from start to finish! Thank yo11
I really like all that you said. You do need a basic skill set of woodworking, electoral, water and plumbing, mechanical, animal husbandry. You need some equipment. Just like buying a car, get the newest equipment you can afford. You may need a computer to work on it, but hopefully the newer equipment will not need to be worked on a often. Not only do you need a business plan, but a plan for your farm. Sit down and draw out what you want for a finished product farm. This way if you need to build something, you can build it where you really want it. Allow for wind direction at all seasons. You don't want a feed lot up wind of the house in the summer. I was raised on a farm. We had cows, hogs, chickens, a milk cow, rabbits, ducks, geese. Daddy and I did custom farming. Meaning he got the work, he hooked uh the equipment and did once around the field with both of us on the tractor. Then he got of and it was me at 9yrs old plowing. I would see him at noon for lunch and at sundown. After High School, I went into the Army and became a helicopter pilot. All the rest of my adult life I remained in aviation. Daddy and I always talked of farming. I would go to some other part of the world and in my spare time would talk to the farmers. When I got home we would sit and talk for hours about the farmers where I had been. I was able to let my daughter experience this as well. She was in FFA [Future Farmers of America]. She raise Chickens, turkeys, sheep, rabbits. She built her own chicken coup. I was surprised at how plumb and square she made it. Now I'm retired and going to move from the city to a small place in the country. Following this channel, I believe I will be raising ducks, geese, rabbits and a few other smaller animals. Keep up the good work. Ken
Nobody is as crazily inventive as a successful farmer! Often a day or two of heavy, hard work can bring years of enjoyment. I have ten flower beds around the house, barn and out buildings. Every one of them was dug at least 2 feet deep and a layer of dead fall logs(from our back 40)spread in the bottom, soil and manure on top. As the years go by, the wood rots feeding the soil and retaining the moisture. There are some summers I only water a few times and some beds only once or twice. I really enjoy watching this channel and am very happy to see how many people are going back to the land.

@@davelawson2564 that was my thought too, but it could be risky to try an unproven surrogate momma. Without a pond, I'm not sure how much she could teach them of "how to duck" naturally anyway.
@@MattOGormanSmith you don;t need a pond. but you need a adult duck. The docile ducks would make good surrogate mothers. Even the "aggressive " ones tend to instinctively do good job of looking after the young. Its better than to let them fend for themselves. but its good entertainment on youtube.

I moved from the city back to the country best move I have ever made, in the city I was stifled no out let for me to create major things for around the property to the home. Since moving to the country I have made my own furniture and storage units for the home rather than take the time to drive out to the city to the shops to buy something over priced 😹😹 it has taken me time but I am making items for my home all by hand now that I have the space to do this a large workshop that Dad and built together with the builder making points that we needed to know but not doing it for us 😹😹 he was building the other workshop that we needed 😹😹I have made and failed year after year my composting system until this year where I finally got it right it took me 10 years to get the right setup but I got there and Dad watched me do this without interfering I love him for that he waits for me to ask him something 😊😊😊 Together we have built my raised veggie boxes as I’m not able to work at ground level and everything we have being doing is so that I will be able to coupe on my own within the confines of a wheelchair knowing what your life is going to be sucks sometimes but since moving back to the country losing the ability to walk don’t suck anymore, I have been learning what I can and can not do and have learned to work around my limited abilities but I have learned to never ever give up on my dreams of being independent ever even if I live back home with Dad I am still very much independent We have been working on painting the house I have a fear of heights so I do the lower half and Dad has been doing the rest where the boards on the house have rotted and have needed replacing or fixing Dad has pulled them off and I work on them while he works on painting the house 😹😹 sure I could have paid someone thousands of dollars to do the work for me but doing it ourselves has given us reason to get out of bed everyday 😹😹 a new day a new challenge now that’s living in my book 😊😊😊😊😊 So Morgan everyday you have the chance to learn something new, and you have been so fantastic at sharing your failures along the way before you have finally started to master it is Inspirational in its self and that’s what it’s all about thank you for sharing everything that you feel is right to share it’s great 🤗🤗🤗

I made a huge mistake with our chickens, the holes in the chicken wire was so big that the chickens could slip through, so they would be roaming around everywhere and eating are fruits and veggies before they could even grow.
I haven’t finished watching it yet but I really feel like that’s directed at me. I love love love the idea of being the type of farmer similar to you, and these tips are really helpful. Love the humor always too haha!
Thanks for giving us tips and skills for those of us that want to become farmers in the future! There's so much work that goes into it behind the scenes!
Try this for your big goose house/tractor: take some 4” pvc pipe that is a little longer than the tractor and cut it in half longways. Then take a heat gun and heat it up so it’s plyable. When it’s soft, press it between 2 boards and clamp it flat. Once it’s cooled, cut the ends into a rounded V shape like a ski, then heat up the ends and bend them upwards like skis. Counter sink some holes along the skis so that you can screw them onto the bottom rails of the tractor and the screw heads won’t catch the grass. The slick pvc plastic should slide on top of your grass, especially if you’re pulling it with the atv.
1. Get a “speed” square, it has layouts for framing wood structures. 2. Take an estimating course and/or get a codes compliance book from your local zoning dept. 3. Tell your friend that I liked his bed hair
Hey Morgan, you define need to be a Jack of all trades as a farmer and always remember if you think it can happen it will definitely happen so never be surprised when things go sideways. That's farm life unpredictable and you never know what's going on happen good or bad. Cheers have a great day.
Something I didn't realize when moving from the city to the country is how often I would checking the dogs for ticks. It's a daily event right now. Also didn't realize how cold it is during Midwestern winters when there are no trees to help as a wind-break.
Every homestead UA-camrs I watch, entails building their own infrastructure, sometimes alone, other times with help, sometimes contracted but building is essential - right up there with fixing things yourself.
I wish schools taught everyone more business and money management.
I'm always surprised that most schools don't teach how to balance your accounts.

Easy peasy. One of my favor it
Easy peasy. One of my favorite expressions. Cheers!
Wiley Coyote is such a great analogy. So much in life is that way - reacting to your situation, doing the best you can, and finding your own way!
I've never seen ducks act as chicken as your mini quacken.
They are without an adult duck to follow around . They are like orphans living w/o adults to guide them. Afraid /unsure of how to handle the world
@@davelawson2564 that was my thought too, but it could be risky to try an unproven surrogate momma.
Your Parents seem to be very nice People! Bet they are proud of you!
I missed the "All duck go to bed" ha ha. I am always amazed to see the flock release. You are doing an amazing job with your video. Thanks.
Right on man. You don't know, what you don't know, until you don't know it. Once you know it.....you know it!
At 67 years old and raised on a large truck garden, hay, and animal operation I still learn every day and sometimes relearn things I learned wrong. I love Mr. Google pants and youtube videos save my ol'butt often.
Would you ever consider doing an in-depth barn tour of exactly what is wrong with the barn. I work restoring old historic timber-framed barns here in Michigan and would be very interested in seeing exactly what is wrong with yours?
Just wanted to say, my family and kids love your channel so much that when they discovered Tractor supply had Khaki Campbell in the store they rushed over and brought home a box of their own Quacken.
Amazing way to put failure and chore skills together, because it takes failure to learn the hard lessons let alone the easy ones lol🤗😜🤓 btw loved the flash backs to the old commercials made me laugh...
I moved from the city back to the country best move I have ever made, in the city I was stifled no out let for me to create major things for around the property to the home. Since moving to the country I have made my own furniture and storage units for the home rather than take the time to drive out to the city to the shops to buy something over priced 😹😹 it has taken me time but I am making items for my home all by hand now that I have the space to do this a large workshop that Dad and built together with the builder making points that we needed to know but not doing it for us 😹😹 he was building the other workshop that we needed 😹😹I have made and failed year after year my composting system until this year where I finally got it right it took me 10 years to get the right setup but I got there and Dad watched me do this without interfering I love him for that he waits for me to ask him something 😊😊😊
Together we have built my raised veggie boxes as I’m not able to work at ground level and everything we have being doing is so that I will be able to coupe on my own within the confines of a wheelchair knowing what your life is going to be sucks sometimes but since moving back to the country losing the ability to walk don’t suck anymore, I have been learning what I can and can not do and have learned to work around my limited abilities but I have learned to never ever give up on my dreams of being independent ever even if I live back home with Dad I am still very much independent
We have been working on painting the house I have a fear of heights so I do the lower half and Dad has been doing the rest where the boards on the house have rotted and have needed replacing or fixing Dad has pulled them off and I work on them while he works on painting the house 😹😹 sure I could have paid someone thousands of dollars to do the work for me but doing it ourselves has given us reason to get out of bed everyday 😹😹 a new day a new challenge now that’s living in my book 😊😊😊😊😊
So Morgan everyday you have the chance to learn something new, and you have been so fantastic at sharing your failures along the way before you have finally started to master it is Inspirational in its self and that’s what it’s all about thank you for sharing everything that you feel is right to share it’s great 🤗🤗🤗
Good for you!...Almost nothing beats the feeling and satisfaction of making something that you need or want ....with your own hands ....except maybe a father who knows to let you get there on your own! Your well on your way to a fulfilling life....take time to savor it.
I made a huge mistake with our chickens, the holes in the chicken wire was so big that the chickens could slip through, so they would be roaming around everywhere and eating are fruits and veggies before they could even grow.
hardware cloth is a great friend
if you can find any at least, stuff is a bit scarce rn

Received my T-shirt today ( Bright Orange Gold Shaw farm bear) I’m so happy to wear it in support of Lit’L Barn cat 🐈🥰😘❤️
Lil is so beautiful so is Pavlo. Don't know if I have his name right or not. But I am so glad Lil was saved. Good life to both cats. & your family.
1. Get a “speed” square, it has layouts for framing wood structures. 2. Take an estimating course and/or get a codes compliance book from your local zoning dept. 3. Tell your friend that I liked his bed hair
Amazing recovery for lil barn cat! Good job all! Your scaredy quakkens are hilarious, I'm sorry to say
Hey Morgan, you define need to be a Jack of all trades as a farmer and always remember if you think it can happen it will definitely happen so never be surprised when things go sideways. That's farm life unpredictable and you never know what's going on happen good or bad. Cheers have a great day.
I am addicted to your videos.
For forty years, I taught physics, including "Wile E's Law":The force of gravity does not take effect until you look down.
Something I didn't realize when
moving from the city to the country is how often I would checking the dogs for ticks. It's a daily event right now. Also didn't realize how cold it is during Midwestern winters when there are no trees to help as a wind-break.
I know Toby is a working dog but it’s nice to see him get some playtime.
Amazing cant wait to see your farm getting big one day
I can't believe how well lil barn cat is walking.
Lil Barn Cat... Love you girlfriend! You keep getting stronger. :)
Lil is one amazing lucky cats 🐈🥰 love to you all
Keep the amazing work
Lil looks good Toby and Pablo are cool also love Your channel thanks for sharing
Every homestead UA-camrs I watch, entails building their own infrastructure, sometimes alone, other times with help, sometimes contracted but building is essential - right up there with fixing things yourself.
