- Today we will talk about the stride and it's role in the swing. Most players and coaches don't pay enough attention to the stride and how it affects our swing. We will break down the incorrect and correct way to stride to improve your swing. Antonelli Baseball is the #1 online resource for baseball instruction. We breakdown the mechanical aspects of hitting, fielding, throwing, and base running to make them easy to understand and actionable. We also cover the mental side of baseball and offer college baseball recruiting advice. We delve into the details that you will not find anywhere else.

Wow, this is my main problem right now, I am entering high school and I have a bad a habit of striding towards first (as a righty). This really helps to put it into perspective on what to work on to eliminate this issue. Thanks a lot!
Thanks! Good luck!
Hi. I really like your video. I promote both stride and no stride as long as a player is triggering and engaging their hips and they are moving to the ball with the correct timing. Great job.
Hey thanks a lot I appreciate it!
Does it matter if you start open? I have an open stance and I think my body compensates that with striding towards 1st base
u shld make a vid on guess hitting/strategic hitting
Good video, I feel that you can eliminate the stride as long as you are a little more spread out (less is more). Make sure your weight goes back a bit (load if you will) even without a stride and I feel that can help when you are eliminating your stride. I believe in the stride as long as you are getting it down when the pitcher gets his stride foot down. When we teach our balance we want to make sure we put our weight on the inside of the knees and turning in just a bit pigeon toed.
excellent vid bro , keep teaching and i hope your videos get around the world, there are a lot of coaches who just get pay by parents , your info is the best out there , so god bless you
Thanks a bunch!
It depends. I think it is important to get your hands back. Back can be different for each player. Some players like a Ken Griffey Jr. had his hands so far back that his lead arm was basically completely straight. Others don't go back that far. But when I watch most elite hitters they get their hands back so that there is a good amount of length in their lead arm. You may start your hands below your heart, but it depends where they get to when you finally launch them.
also you talk alot about keeping your hands back (over your back foot), should this compensate with how loose you are? (i'm left handed, my hands are pretty comfortable when i hold the bat right below my heart) if you get too far back can't you restrict your ability to turn on the inside pitch? I appreciate your responses thank you
should you land toe then heel? or straight to the full foot on the grounf
No it doesn't really matter. The biggest thing when striding is that your momentum is moving back towards the pitcher instead of into the plate. If your momentum moves too much into the plate then you have a tendency to tie yourself up and not be able to rotate as well. You want to think about staying square as much as you can.
I would say most players stride onto the ball of their foot. You don't necessarily have to stride onto your toe. Guys that stride early usually stride onto their toe and then drop their heel when they begin to swing, but if your a guy that strides later I would say its more on the ball of the foot.
Something to ponder. Does the torso support the goal of the legs or do the legs support the goal of the torso? I believe it's the latter. When I teach hitting I don't teach kids to stride. I teach them to keep their head centered between their feet when they lift the front heel/foot. Another idea to ponder. Do you lift the front foot to stride, or do you lift the front foot to cock the hips? I believe you lift the front foot to cock the hips...and as you are cocking the hips you attempt to keep your head centered between your feet. The only way to do both of those actions simultaneously is to allow your torso to come forward. The forward movement of the torso is what we commonly call a stride...when in fact it's just the torso attempting to maintain balance after the front leg is lifted. In my experience this is more than just semantics.

If you believe good hitters get their stride foot down at the same time that the pitcher gets their stride foot down...you may want to study some video clips of MLB hitters where the pitcher and hitter are both visible in the clip.
what is stride exactly? i dont think i stride at all :p
The stride is really the torso working to remain in balance after the front foot/heel is lifted to cock the hips. The front leg is attached to the torso so it moves when the torso moves. Kids simple need to be taught to keep their head centered between their feet...AS...they cock their hips. The width of the stance, the length of the stride, how high the front foot is lifted; are all style choices that kids need to figure out for themselves through experimentation.
hey thanks for your explanation!
im not a kid but ive never seen baseball until i was already 18 so i am trying to learn
Matt's videos are an excellent resource to learn about baseball, so you have come to the right place. His videos on hitting are really good. I use Ted Williams as a blueprint for hitting and Matt's ideas on hitting are very close to what Ted believed. Ted's understanding of the weight shift is the best I've ever read. Ted's info on hitting is a goldmine if you can figure out what he believed...which is a challenge. I've never come across anyone who explained the weight shift like Ted. Matt's videos are pretty darn close though.
aimhigh1961 hey how did you see what Ted said? so you know where i can read it? i have very similar body type to Ted so it sounds very intriguing
Himu Yashiro It took me about three years to figure out how Ted hit. I started with his book "The Science of Hitting". Then I searched for every interview he gave. Then I searched for comments about him from players and coaches who saw him hit and/or talked hitting with him. There are some key pieces of information in his interviews that helped me piece together his ideas on weight shift, balance and barrel path. Unfortunately most coaches today don't allow kids to incorporate into their swings the key movements that Ted believed in.
