My heart was in my mouth the whole time you were carrying the chandelier down the stairs and up the ladder. More tense than a Hitchcock film. I also admire the technical terms “thingy” and “doohickey”. I understand those!
Y'all. PLEASE! Replace that "S" hook. It is far too small. The chandelier is sublime, I'd hate to see it crash to the floor! Love, your safety conscious Granny in North Carolina.
Catherine O I know me and my partner nearly choked on our dessert....when we saw that hook....I have two weighty chandeliers but not as big as that one and they are hung on the equivalent of a crane hook.😂 I couldn't watch....I hope they have managed to change it out... but hats off to the carrying down the stairs palaver and then up the ladder...it was as bad as watching someone cross NiAgra falls on a tight rope in a hurricane xxx
I would have to agree .. if you had second thoughts about it when you put it up.. follow your gut instinct.. that is the universe telling you something.
I love the way you are restoring and decorating your chateau. The mix of traditional elegance and extraordinary contemporary art pieces speaks volumes about your taste level. Your ability to engage the viewer is fabulous and you are delightful.
I absolutely love the new color you chose for the walls and that chandelier is stunning. I would get a heavier S hook though. It was scary to see him hang it on that. It's a not good long-term situation. It's not even mine but I will cry if it falls someday. Love watching you guys best of luck to you in 2021
The chandelier is perfect for the size of this room and is a real stunner. I think you are the first of the chateau renovators I watch who has actually used gold leaf to restore some of the golden elements of their chateaus. It looks far superior to gold paint that so many use. Loving the vibe of this room!
My house in New Orleans has glass like that. It’s over 175 years old. It’s one of the many things that I love in my city. I love watching y’all work together for a common goal. It’s just so much fun!
You guys really made the chandelier carrying scenes a whole-ass movie. I appreciate that you carried it for longer than necessary so that the scenes are cooler, thanks for the effort you guys put into your videos!!
While I love LaLande - how I found you- I think your style is actually more in line with mine- clean and minimalistic, hints of opulence ( fabric, chandeliers etc)
Nice chandelier for the room. Consider a pulley system in the future to lift it, as well as for cleaning and maintenance. It'll make your life a lot easier.
I love that room. The color is perfect and the mirror really stands out now. The chandelier is beautiful . This what I expect in a french interior . It is a job well done.
👏👏👏 For carrying that chandelier down all those stairs. And specially for carrying it up the ladder and lifting it to the ceiling, amazing balance. What a beautiful chandelier. The gold looks silver on video.
You both have managed to get a real gem when you purchased this chateau! The chandelier is amazing!!! The gold leaf product on the mirror was a brilliant idea, it really looks good & adds to the character of the chateau. I love that you have saved the old bubbled glass in the windows. You are both making this place proud with your accomplishments!
Watching the Chandelier coming down the beautiful stairwell looked like a stunning bride coming down in all her glory, so beautiful. I know it might sound a little corny. But the lighting and the sound was absolutely tantalizing?!? It really sets off the room as does the gold leaf, the large mirror and the ripple effect of the old glass on the windows. Absolutely stunning. Well done. It was scary though, especially climbing the ladder as you did… beautiful 🤩
Stunning chandelier! I held my breath as you came down the stairs! Hope the hook is strong enough! Loving the mirror & how you are learning by doing it yourself, good work:) I’m loving your Chateau vlogs ❤️
Loving your vlogs, you two are a delight to watch and so funny! Last week I held my breath as you went up a chimney and this week you went up a ladder with a chandelier without holding on! The room is looking amazing.
You make it look so easy! Or not. Philipp gets the chandelier down from the attic and hung in the salon in a little more than four UA-cam minutes - amazing. A term that might come in handy: the red or brown matter (clay rather than paint) found under proper gilding - is, in English, called bole.
This was a stressful one to watch but CONGRATULATIONS on getting that beautiful chandelier hooked up! Isn't it missing a few ampoules?? What an octopus of wires!! Yes, I would use sticky tape to identify all the wires...beautiful job! You guys are so funny! Love it! Traditionally, the red paint used as a primer for gilding is called red bole or clay bole. It remains a bit tacky and helps the gold leaf to adhere to it. It also give the gold a deep. rich gold colour. Once the gold is applied, the gold is burnished with an agate stone to make it smooth. But it doesn't matter because your work looks rustic and beautiful. Great job!
I was so incredibly happy to have come across your channel in the suggested section. Because I watch Stephanie and all the others channels. It is so good that you use, 'Little Greene', paint. They have such a good values and ethics behind their company. I absolutely love love love your renovations. Especially in the rooms where Stephanie and Marie stayed over. It's so nice to see impeccable taste in your choices. You both have such good down to earth personalities. Which is good. I look forward to seeing you both visit Stephanie's chateau. I agree with the others about the S hook. About the mirror - Apparently they put the rabbits glue on top of the red bole /clay. They picked up the gold leaf with a very thin but wide bristle brush. Then lay it down onto a special kind of pad. Then, cut the gold leaf with a bluntish special type knife. Gently placed the leaf on top of the rabbits glue. Then used the crystal stick to burnish the gold. It makes it incredibly shiny like a mirror gold like the frames. But to make it look antique they used another liquid type that I can't remember. On top. The old ingredients for water gilding from the 19th century. Was glue made from rabbits collagen in their skin /hide. With the 'red bole', made from clay. I only know this because I looked into it for my future furniture art. As I want to do it in the old 19th century methods. But (without) the horrible rabbits glue from the collagen in their skin. There is lots of videos of people using that method on old gold frames. They even use another method to make the gilding look antiqued. I hope that helps. I really enjoy your vlogs. Keep it going x
What an effect of sunlight from the window on the wall - and what a beautiful chandelier - Fantastic. Love when Philips "cheats". Take care of yourself - a beautiful home you create together. 👍❤
After a spooky kind of incident the other night in my home, I too suggest a stronger hook. I was reading and my better half was asleep and I heard this dreadful crash. I thought the bedroom window had cracked or an animal (wallaby or possum) had hit it. No trace of cracks, no further sounds; I ran around like a headless chook for a while! Next morning all was revealed; the wardrobe railing had crashed down leaving all our clothes sitting on the floor! Save yourselves the cost and angst; go stronger! The hooks of the railing were straight; they were meant to be hooks! I’m enjoying this content; loved you including your husbands ruse! We have to keep the integrity, don’t we, regards, Susan From Hobart.
Try a sable blush brush to blend lightly the gold sheets together whilst the glue is still liquid and flexible, also one buy antique gold sheets, rather than bright gold to save time, as many different sheet tones available ✨
Yep! Get that hook, replaced. So so good being able to do the electrics yourself. very talented. And the mirror. I have done gold leaf myself and the only way is to jump in and "Just Do It" with any new craft. Beautiful finish... And that chandelier is absolutely lovely and elegant. The warmth it gives is so elegant.

Quite a messy job, that gold leafing. But I love that you try the best you can. Trial and error...a nd you LEARN, and I love that you DO learn - the hard way. Makes us wonder about the workers of old, that didn't have the same glues, and who knows about paper-thin gold leaves. And still their work lasted for decades/centuries. What formidable wealth of knowledge has been lost...
Beautiful chandelier. Well done Phillip on the safe transportation, physical effort and successful electrical installation. Well done Anna for the mirror gilding work, it looks lovely against the shade of green on the panels
The chandelier is gorgeous!! Well worth the 3 hour drive and a stay in a hotel !! Well done carrying that heavy chandelier!! I love the antique windows. The windows in my apartment are from The 1900's and have ripples too. The mirror looks wonderful! Love from Vermont
Great Job! Happy New Year!
HI: You are intrepid adventurers! That chandelier is a beauty - perfect for the room. I am very impressed by your skill sets - electrics and gold gilding etc...really excited to see the finished room. Its a really beautiful building - original glass panes - magical!
I subscribed a couple of months ago but binge watched your videos in the last few days. Just love them. I think you haven't killed each other while doing the renovations simply because you two are just such good friends with each other. It's just so lovely to see. :)
Gorgeous chandelier---and I was happy to read in the comments that you intend to replace that skimpy hook with something sturdier. The room is beautiful; you have very classic, elegant taste.
I am really enjoying your vlogs. You joke with each other the same way my husband and I do so it makes me chuckle. You are learning so many great skills along the way too!
The electrics is compared to the human body. I was pre-med. not well enough to continue. When I bought a home I did the plumbing and electrical too. Loved it! You are doing so well fixing up the chateau! Slow but steady.
Hello, I don’t want to be a know-it-all, but a couple of tips. When removing masking tape it tends to pluck the edges of paint UNLESS you pull it down over itself, not like you did, but pull it very flat down over itself, not out and away from the wall. Not sure if gold leaf behaves this way. Also gold leaf is usually lifted on a soft brush, and in a room with every door and window closed so no draughts. It looks great.
I have seen it on The Chateau Diaries when Stephanie visits the first Hôtel in Avignon. The patron restored all his windows with old glass and as far as I remember he told the factory in the vlog where you can buy it.
I have started your videos from 1 and watching again..I had forgotten about the chandelier... It really is spectacular..your paint and building ...all beautiful..on to video 3
you two are simply delightful! Thank you for sharing your journey with us. You add a bright spot to the world. Old world glass is still available, albeit a tad more, so worth it. Also, look for old windows - amazing that they are often discarded and still have the old glass. The chateau is looking terrific. We are so looking forward to watching more...and your charming banter and wit. much love!
I love the way you two work with each other. Really charming. The red beneath the Gold gives a warmth to the Gold that would otherwise not be there. It works with the brain too. I know that sounds Coo Coo but it has a scientific element to it. In hair colour, to fill hair that has been decolorized too much to the point where the natural red and gold is depleted so much that any toner will look "Muddy", we "Fill" the hair with red pigment or gold pigment or both and then apply the toner over it to get a lustrous result with the complete color spectrum returned to the fiber. Fun fact - Stare at the gold leaf edge on the mirror for 30 seconds or more and then shut your eyes gently. Voila, what color do you see; Red. Also, stare at the Green walls intently for a period of time, close your eyes gently and what color do you see; Red. Great work and a lovely finish. Best wishes from across the pond.
The sound of the crystals clinking coming down the stairs was so pretty
Gosh, watching Philipp climb that ladder without hands was terrifying! The results are gorgeous though!
A man who can appreciate the beauty of a crystal chandelier......priceless!
Exactement. Omg when he said “I love this chandelier” I was like YOU DO!?😭😭😭😭 very nice to see.
Omg, the editing on the electricity part was too funny!
Agreed! I enjoyed that, too!
Very cute🤣

@@HowToRenovateAChateau its a bit difficult to work with. Good luck.
Quite a few have used gold leaf. Johnny on the floor, Angel on many things and quite a few besides
Your taste is stunning. Probably one of the most beautiful chandeliers I have seen. This is so much fun to see your hand on this Chateau.
Thank you so much!
I agree. Classy.
Can't stop looking at that chandelier!

I would replace the S hook with a robust chain. The beautiful chandelier hangs now too high
I agree. I think it would look better a bit lower on a chain as the ceilings are so high.
