I'm 69 years old...married 50. We've built seven houses/cabins. When it comes to counter tops I've learned a few things. You asked if wood would work. Most woods require upkeep. I prefer granite or quartz. This is THE counters in the U.S. I put hot pots on my granite countertops, and chop on top of them. Quartz is about the same. Popular right now is porcelain countertops. They weren't available for our last build. I'm not sure what you have available to you, but wood is questionable. You are my favorite chateau vlog.
Anna ... Your Mum & Dad are Super-Heros !!! 💕 Such great human beings ... I see where you get your work ethic from. I've been loving your vlog series for ages now & truly look forward to the next, each time ... What a team !!! 💞 🇨🇦
My kitchen island has a wooden top made from teak planks. We just lightly sand and oil it every two years with food grade wood oil and 8 years down it is still good. The one thing I am very strict about is not cutting directly on the surface so we always use chopping boards and trivets for hot pots. I also don’t really use any harsh cleaning products - only wipe it with a damp microfiber cloth. Never regretted changing the original granite top for wood.
For 30 years I have had an 11 foot by 5 foot butcher block wooden island in my kitchen. There is a 15 inch circular sink for vegetable preparation and a 7 inch hole opposite the sink that drops down to a trash container (there is a different place for recycling). There is a separate area in the kitchen for cleanup - a large sink and a dishwasher on either side of that sink. It has worked wonderfully. Approximately every 10 years we give it a light sanding and rub with mineral oil. It is low maintenance and we have had no problems with the wood and water. I based my kitchen layout on the kitchen at the Brighton Pavilion. It has worked wonderfully for just my husband and I or for large groups and caterers. Love your program!!!!
Anna's father is so adorable -- so hard working and so gentle when speaking to his daughter. To everyone out there who may not be as close to their father as they'd like, reach out and tell them you love them -- today, tomorrow, but don't wait too long! I lost my dad many years ago to ALS and miss him so much. When I hear people say they're estranged or not close to their dad, I feel so sad and just want to encourage them to reach out.... They won't be around forever and however wonderful anyone else in your life can be, there's only one Dad. Hugs to Anna's dad!
If you use wood as a work surface, try the butcher block technique of upended wood blocks, easier to scrape away any damage as they did with butcher blocks. There are some woods that are more food friendly like maple. You could also encastre a slab of marble into the worktop for pastry making. Maybe bind the worksurface with brass like a bistro and don't forget to round of the corners unless you want blue hips. Put a brass towel rail in two places. Just an idea xxx
We made beech cutting boards in my woodshop class. I say have Benoit look at that beech tree wood and see if it’d be suitable for a worktop table! Would want it kiln-dried, though maybe he has a place to do that?
Your parents are so wonderful-such hard workers-just amazing!! Can’t wait to see the kitchen take shape. I love it when your parents visit. You all are such fun. Hope John can rest up and enjoy the rest of their visit. Have a wonderful week.

Can't wait to see the kitchen finished. lol, lol, love your organizational skills Phillip!!! lol Dad has done a lot of work out there ... lol, yes nice haircut. Yes, her Dad is so nice, yes the CHIPPER!!! lol, good job driving the tailor. That was a lot of tree mess!!! Dad did a great job and the Chipper is a great machine for your property. Dads are SO much more biddable than husbands! You can always rely on mum and dad to pitch in when needed! We often don’t appreciate them as much as we should. Yours are wonderful.
Philipp, maybe you could train one of your daughters (since you seem into that) to handle all the correspondence and appointments required of your Internet celebrity. Enjoyed hearing more about the kitchen plans. The parents/in-laws team was awesome in dealing with the storm devastation. I think this vlog even showed more of the scope of the damage and the cleanup required than your original vlog after the storm.
I’m so sorry for your loss, Jana. You are very right that we only have our loved ones for a while, and no idea how long that might be. Wring the most from every day.
You are such a wonderful family - the beauty and sanity of your life is a godsend for those of us trapped in Victoria Australia. Thankyou for bringing balance and loveliness - even as you deal with a defiant shredder!
Fall is such a beautiful time to work WOOD....bonfire time, wood stoves, branches for kindling....nice family....plz keep the LOVE, respect, grace.....thank you.
Color wise, if the orange is actually copper, then what about looking at the variations of verdigris that naturally complement it? That can be for flooring, bench, paint but in different tones and shades. And/or if you’re still using Anna’s grandmother’s painting, pull the colors directly from that.
I was thinking along the same lines. The floor was inspiring me, as was the copper pots. I think terra cotta would work, especially with a chateau kitchen. And the added bonus is it works with loads of other coloyrs, blues, yellows, greens, etc..
I don’t know what they have in France, but you can have a beautiful butcher block countertop and you can treat with oils that are ok to cut and cook on. With your pop of orange. Do a hammered copper farmhouse sink, and you can even do copper drawer/door hardware. Along with a beautiful copper kitchen faucet.
You can really tell that your youngest daughter is her grandfathers as she has some of his features. Both of your daughters are so adorable and such great helpers!!!💖💝💖
I would recommend that you have pot filler faucet that is placed in the wall above the range (they are foldable). It eliminates the need for carrying filled, heavy pots filled with water.
Anna your parents are amazing. Their work ethic is brilliant. Phillip is funny as usual. For the kitchen bamboo or maple are good choices. Quartz is a good countertop that’s easy to clean and maintain. Keeping as much of the original features is a great idea. Can’t wait to see it finished. Thanks for sharing.😍😘
I love Anna’s mom and dad! Such great people. You are so fortunate to have an amazing family. Philipp, I know you love your wood chipper but don’t show your little girl how to turn it on, gives me a heart attack!! I know you were kidding around and my goodness she is just the cutest child. The sound affect when Anna stopped the car with the trailer was hilarious! Love your humor. The kitchen is going to be awesome. Another great vlog! 💕
that chipper made light worker of those branches!! It's fun to watch the time-lapse. I am glad that you and Anna have "decided" to go with a more country "chateau" look for the kitchen. Now colour....my vote is for a blue-grey theme, some darker grey to a lighter blue but with the same base. I've seen it done and it looks fabulous. If I get the chance, is how I am going to colour my kitchen. Anna's Dad is like the Energiser Bunny!!! He goes and goes!!
Marble is porous, so if red wine spills, I'm not sure you'd like it. There's gotta be another stone for pies that isn't marble, like quartz, which doesn't require sealing, and is heat scratch and stain resistant...and if you have enough cherry from your fallen trees, maybe use that for the butcher block, adding strips of other woods if not enough., like bamboo, or red oak, walnut, which you may have an abundance of on your property.
Hi, nice ideas but just want to clarify one thing. There’s a difference between quartz and quartzite. Quartz is a man-made material and it uses resin to bind chips of quartz and marble. The quartz is not heat resistant. The quartz top does get damaged if you put a hot pot on it due to the resin in it.Quartzite does not, as it is a natural material. It is a little expensive but it’s really beautiful. And it’s also good with stains. I prefer it over the man-made quartz. There is also a newish material that’s becoming popular that I just used on a residential project. ( I am an interior designer) It is porcelain slabs. Dekton Is one of the manufactures. The head company is Constantino and you can look on the website there. This company is in Europe and in the US. There are other manufacturers also such as Neolith. The material is absolutely beautiful, comes in a range of patterns and colors and because it’s porcelain, it is impervious to heat, stains, scratches, and can be placed outdoors where quartz cannot(due to the sun turning the resin yellow sometimes) Hope this helps!
So enjoy watching your dreams become realities!! I too know the joy of having my parents, who live in the USA, come for a visit. It Is amazing how much we get done working together! Our little girls so enjoy having their grandparents close by. Blessings from El Salvador!
Your parents are amazing, Anna! My back was hurting just watching your Dad. We did so much of that after Hurricane Hugo, every time I hear a chain saw I still think of that. Our neighborhood is heavily wooded, so this time of year we are piling as many leaves as we can into our compost bins. What lovely mulch you have there! Hard work….they say busy hands are happy hands! Smiles to you all!
Hello to Mom & Dad!!! Phillipp's sketches are works of art!! Anna's explanations make it all very interesting and clear. I really like Philipp's telling us how he "Does It All"!! The"Urgent to do heap" is a great idea. The "Archive" is brilliant!! This level of efficiency is remarkable!!! It explains how he can do it all with only "a little help" from Anna. Dad's a wiz with the chainsaw!! Dad deserves the tea and chocolate biscuits!! Ella is adorable and smart. If you climb into a shredder you will "Get all Little". Good sound effects when Anna pulls up in the car! Love seeing Mom & Dad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Thanksgiving from Vermont
I think this was one one my most favorite yet! Always a laugh out loud from Philip. I just adore your entire family! This week there were so many components , and it was truly entertaining! Thank you Anna and Philip and kudos to Anna’s Dad!
Love the kitchen restoration/adaptation ideas! For the island countertop, I think if you install a sink there, a stone counter might be the better choice. You can always place an extra large cutting board on top of the stone surface (for the chopping of vegetables, etc). Little injections of wood, plus the kitchen table, plus those gorgeous copper pots and pans will give you all the warmth the room needs. Just my two cents. :)
What a lovely family! It is such fun to do things together. John is just like my father. He too gets up early and in constantly in this let's-accomplish-something-today mode. He's 79 and makes me feel really old by how energetic and sharp he is.... it is really inspiring to me. Dads always need to do something to feel useful. I love that.
Thank heaven for helping parents it means the world! Love the traditional kitchen plans it will be lovely and timeless. Please consider a second dishwasher, maybe one a high speed commercial under counter for dishes, glasses and cutlery. As the world opens up people will flock in droves to stay and meet with you. Initial financial output maybe higher than a normal one but it saves so much time! Thanks for the tip on Skillshare. I want to hone my drawing skills. Over the years I had several courses which were very frustrating. The instructors were either teaching too simplistic minding more about their income from less talented people which was frustrating, or condescending which was crushing. Good luck with all! Ich wünsche Euch eine schöne, besinnliche Adventszeit 🎄
just discovered this channel, binging all the videos currently. paused the video to say that philip is so hilarious! Finding this channel was my win for the day
Anna I’m glad Philip is your favourite person 😘🤣. And you have amazing parents who drop everything to come and help😘❤️. You are all amazing with the work you do😘❤️. Take care xxxxxx
You should definitely think of a pot filler above your range cooker. And also consider installing a faucet that has boiling hot water, can cool water and even make it sparkling etc. (There is one from quooker and grohe I think)
Love the sound of the new kitchen esp with the old doors kept - I’ve had two lots of wooden worktops if you don’t keep up with maintenance they go awful just replaced mine with a granite much easier …. Your parents are so like mine spent every weekend here between 2000 and 2015 before we sadly lost dad but lots of great memories memories
Genug Holz, um den Winter über warm zu haben ;-) Holz heizt ja bekanntlich mermals: beim Scneiden, beim Hacken, beim Reintragen und im Feuer......... Möge das Euch bei der harten Arbeit trösten!
Love the open glass windows on cabinet because things will be kept clean there. You can show off your china and special items. The kitchen looks great and love the ideas.
In your busy season, you will be cooking for many people, it might save you a little time to put a small sink directly beside the stovetop to strain out all the pots you will inevitably be cooking which would allow your central island for plating meals. And if you install a pot-filler tap on the wall above the cooktop you can fill them without having to lift large, heavy pots across walking spaces... which will save your back.
Love the plan to keep the kitchen in the style of a chateau. I’m sure wood was a standard back in the day. However, I have had a real oak center island hand crafted by an old-school woodworker. It was absolutely beautiful but a royal pain to maintain. I am a relatively neat, non destructive person. I could not be careful enough to maintain the butcher block. Finally about 5 years ago I changed it to LG quartz that looks like Carrara marble. It is beautiful and a dream to use. Used a double thickness with combination of 2 edges stacked. Looks old world with none of the trouble.
You asked about worktops and recommendations. If you want wood, I have wooden worktops. Get a hardwood, I bought solid oak from IKEA, they were thick and of excellent quality, they come untreated. If you want an extra thick look double it up and clamp and glue them together. They are not as thick as the original ones I fitted in my beach house in the UK. I use Osmo oil, they do many wood products and are excellent. Osmo worktop oil is quick to use and re coating is simple.... There wood stain is very good for window shutters!! If you want hard warring get granite, or quartz... Don't use marble as it is porous and a pain to look after... Keep up the good work!
Love the ideas for the kitchen renovation. With Benoit on carpentry duty he'll be able to make it look as if it were always like that. I agree about the symmetry of the fireplace and cupboards, I also like the blue colour it is painted at the moment. A big farmhouse table would look great. I like too the idea, someone had to have a granite worktop for the island with large butchers block chopping boards. The flooring is something that could set it all off as it's a large space.
Oh my! Your parents are such hard workers! What an achievement over four days - it looks great! It is clear where your work ethic comes from, Anna! The kitchen plans sound wonderful - I'm so glad you are sticking with the more eclectic, farmhouse style. Well done, Phillip for your collaborating compromises - I am so glad that you will have your wine fridge. :)
Anna you are so lucky to have your Dad with you to help with the storm damaged trees, I’m sure he is only delighted to be joining you and the family and to be able to help so much x

I think this was one one my most favorite yet! Always a laugh out loud from Philip. I just adore your entire family! This week there were so many components , and it was truly entertaining! Thank you Anna and Philip and kudos to Anna’s Dad!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great tip!
How beautiful the trees are around the Chateau.
We all need our mummy and daddy to help now and again ... they are so amazing . Well done for coming over. Yay such a great job.
Great parents they seem strong and healthy!❤️❤️❤️
So lucky to have such active parents. Phillip must have some acting training , always the jokester. Really enjoy watching.
It’s nice to see the parents again, they obviously love spending time with you guys.
These are my favourite videos!! And I really appreciate Phillip’s wonderful, dry sense of humour🤣😂
The most entertaining, heartwarming channel on UA-cam love it xxx
You should definitely think of a pot filler above your range cooker. And also consider installing a faucet that has boiling hot water, can cool water and even make it sparkling etc. (There is one from quooker and grohe I think)
That is a great idea and a must!
The boiling water and chilled water tap is great for cuppas and a cold drink! And handy with guests and saves on fridge opening!
The greatest introduction to the sponsorship. Love the videos
Glad you like them!
Genug Holz, um den Winter über warm zu haben ;-)
Holz heizt ja bekanntlich mermals: beim Scneiden, beim Hacken, beim Reintragen und im Feuer.........
Möge das Euch bei der harten Arbeit trösten!
Love the open glass windows on cabinet because things will be kept clean there. You can show off your china and special items. The kitchen looks great and love the ideas.
The little girl is so lucky to grow up in such a dreamy place!
Your Mom and Dad are amazing! My parents in the day were the same. They are such a blessing and that was some hard work! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yes! Thank you!
You and your wee ones are a treasure to enjoy. Thank you for sharing your journey. You all always bring a smile to my face and heart. ❤️🌹
Thanks for the tip!
and will still be having a dining table in wood.
Anna, you have such a loving family. Your parents are a love ... so hard working! Chopping up trees is back breaking work. I know. I've done it.
Anna, your mum and dad are such good fun. Whenever I watch your videos I end up smiling.
Having watched all of the vlog your mum needs praising too you’ve certainly got the dream team there Anna. Well done everyone x
Loved watching as normal . Philipp did not disappoint me as normal. loved watching you all xx
Anna you are so lucky to have your Dad with you to help with the storm damaged trees, I’m sure he is only delighted to be joining you and the family and to be able to help so much x
Love, love how your property has an enormous amount of deciduous trees - my favorite season of all is Autumn. 🍂🌾🍁💜
I so enjoy watching your flogs! You can tell how much Anna's parents love your chateau!
