Talk given to the Jung Society in Clairemont, CA 1991
Note: Some Gaps in the audio as it jumps from tape to tape, this is presented in the order the files were found.
Carl Gustav Jung (26 July 1875 -- 6 June 1961) was a Swiss psychiatrist, an influential thinker and the founder of Analytical Psychology. Jung is often considered the first modern psychologist to state that the human psyche is "by nature religious" and to explore it in depth. Though not the first to analyze dreams, he is one of the best known pioneers in the field of dream analysis. While he was a fully involved and practicing clinician, much of his life's work was spent exploring tangential areas, including Eastern and Western philosophy, alchemy, astrology, and sociology, as well as literature and the arts; all of which were extremely productive in regard to the symbols and processes of the human psyche, found in dreams and other entries to the unconscious.
He considered the process of individuation necessary for a person to become whole. This is a psychological process of integrating the opposites including the conscious with the unconscious while still maintaining their relative autonomy. Individuation was the central concept of analytical psychology.
Many pioneering psychological concepts were originally proposed by Jung, including the Archetype, the Collective Unconscious, the Complex, and synchronicity. A popular psychometric instrument, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), has been principally developed from Jung's theories.

Most other countries should have them too.Cows and even bulls will usually run from a small group of 3-4 people BTW just be careful with land owners. 😉 Some friends back in the day said they almost got kidnapped & put in a shed at gunpoint. LOL Maybe ask permission and offer some cash to keep it respectful legal & avoid tarnishing mushroom’s reputation further.

I'm not 100% sure, but since you asked this a year ago and no one has answered, I'm going to try. :)
I *think* what he's saying is that the alphabet we've ended up with, as symbols to simply represent phonetic sounds, creates an extra barrier to understanding complicated ideas than language of the past used to. And I think the point he's making at the end of the statement, regarding disempowerment, is that because the knowledge itself is even harder to understand now, that makes the huge scientific advancements we do witness seem unattainable to most of us... whereas maybe before the evolution of language, a wider variety of "types" of minds would have been able to understand, and therefore made discoveries and accomplished more, themselves. Meanwhile, the few who are not hindered by the change of language, for one reason or another, are able to excel far above the average person's capabilities. Maybe he felt the pictographs or hieroglyphics contained more of a universal language.
Again, I'm not sure... especially because his use of the word "metaphor" slightly threw me off, in that context. But listening to the paragraph or so as a whole, that's what I got from it.
I'd love to see someone else chime in. Great question!

Single child family models might lead to egocentrism as you suggest, but the fact that reducing population is a good thing is undeniable, the single biggest problem we face is the supply vs the demand of the basics of life.
I think it's the family model itself that is the problem with our current paradigm, I think it would be far better to be raised by a group of different people than by just 1 or 2, I think the diversity is important, having a wide range of influences to pick and choose from...

Jung had a very limited, and somewhat fearful perspective on psychedelics (which were, at the time he briefly wrote about them, mescaline and LSD). He warned against how their use might trigger direct contact with the collective psyche, inducing great confusion and confliction. While this is certainly a real, common result, I think that in our aeon we could benefit greatly from a much larger number of people experiencing this type of contact. This being said, culture screws up psychedelics, just like it screws up sex, religion and spirituality, etc. Be careful... psychedelics are immensely powerful tools. Tread lightly but don't give in to fear. Know thyself :)

In one of his lectures he references the 'mind palace'. The idea to map an overly familiar place in your mind and as you move through these settings, set down a pre created token, of what you want to remember. He goes on to elaborate remebering 'lust as one of the deadly sins', imagine turning that corner, down the hall and where the fire extinguisher hangs, place an emblem of a nun lifting her skirt. The next time you traverse this palace, pass that particular corner, you'll see the nun, and, it'll be hard to forget.

      "BURN."
      - .. Really? …
It seems to me, Kat and Terry express a different angle as they respond to a remark from someone in the audience at 3:10:55, "I think there is only one life on the planet (...)."
Terence starts waxing on the subject of transparency and a proposed end of history, before Kathleen takes it back to plant teachers and rocks with an example from a personal point of view. He continues by taking the concept of morphic resonance as a perspective on Morning Glory, after she speaks.

Reality selection. Not invention, escape or fantasy, just selection. We aren't living in any sort of psychologically healthy, holistic society. It's almost totally nuerotic and sick. We got this dumped on us and we can select something else collectively but we need to know / experience the alternative way of seeing and being.

What Terence is talking about here and there and everywhere in regards to boundry dissolution on psychedelics is EXACTLY what Jung himself said of them (he never used them, he was involved in the early western mescaline scientific experiments). Jung says that what they do is "remove the top layer of apperception", which is essentially the boundary dissolution that Terence talks about. The kind of perceptual framework that we use to discriminate what is what in the world is lifted to an extent which allows our unconscious to flood our awareness with potentiality, giving rise to all kinds of colors and associations, thought patterns etc etc.
Having that sudden explosion of awareness is what is so shocking about peoples initial psychedelic experience.

Erki Anne .. the leprechaun was leading all the old people back into the world of children... she found that the magical creatures were bored even though they were in a fantasy world.. the humans were bored even though they were in a free happy world.. the drawings were bored.. mostly just because they were made on top of the boards themselves. At each level, beings were bored, and they believed the beings on the next level up had what they lacked.. but they really all had the same thing. Erki Anne led them back to appreciation... their minds opened again like children and they were able to pretend.. to fly to marvel at stupid and simple things... and they were able to be cared for by immortal parent archetypes and the end of end adventure... who fashioned life as a school... they all really just wanted that... they woke from their troubles.. and appreciated the wonders around them. No one has to leave childhood. Thats why God and Goddess exist... they make all our lives a school and keep the tragedies at bay. They just want us to learn. Feel the innocence... feel the absurdity of seriousness washed away... they were just hippy children. They didnt know how all the gagdets worked they just inherited them... they felt good to have their masks washed away from them.. out of the world of social anxieties... into the world of the japanese... in japan they were happy, no one tried to force them to lose innocence.. they lived in the shinto shrines.. with the original face. japan is where they all reunite on the way to a mature life... to realize its not so extreme up there... its just the spirit of the child... everything is just more flexible... but its the same format... its more flexible.. so it doesnt hurt when you fall... you are flexible. Never change the format, just see that parents are more than just bodies but an energy that can be found in a tree or river even sun or stars... so can friends. Take these ideas that life needs to be so extremely different from your original peace and toss it away... instead see the world teaching you more and yourself still as the child, but just more lucid. With their parent spirits there, everyone is calmer this is how they make peace in japan, this is the secret to asian way of life.. you can be a child but immortal and learn all the way.. you can be innocent but still connected to the complex gifts of nature.. dont feel like you have to lose innocence, and you wont be driven from home. This gift is taught periodically to every generation by the earth...

Maybe this will seem childish, but I wish McKenna were still here (in 2024) to help me gain some perspective and hope on our current states of madness, violence, hatred and intolerance. I’ve tried the hallucinogens. They don’t work in isolation, alas.

While somewhat I agree that psychedelics make one "PAY MORE ATTENTION TO REALITY AND OUR OWN INTERACTIONS WITH IT", I disagree that you cannot reduce consciousness to material processes. The concept of material is fuzzy however, and there is no strict difference between materialism and escapism. In fact this is what Jung's work was all about. Do not assert that by doing psychedelics you become more aware of reality, because there is no such thing as reality. Asserting that is in fact escapism.

I think why some people feel negative about escapism is that they think that a) we should be positive about this existence that we're in and b) we should be dealing with our issues rather than trying to run away from them and c) when you go on your get-away, it's only temporary so it's not a proper solution. I think that's where they're coming from. But escapism is generally socially acceptable - movies, holidays.. when it comes to substances, people are a bit funny with it. Ho hum..

Terence McKenna is actually paraphrasing from The Marriage of Heaven and Hell by William Blake: "Truth can never be told so as to be understood, and not be believ'd". I've noticed TMK drops a Blake line every now and then, unfortunately he - to my knowledge - never goes into more detail about Blake's works and ideas.

2:57:00 - If we hear about "the end of history" from plants then its the end of their history... Not to say they are jaded... but... if were were to give them cognitive perception... and imagine ourselves as them just... us... then it would be fair to assume their advice is in the benefit of them... not necessarily in the benefit of the human mind or evolution of life from a mammalian proliferation.
Its not to say they cant teach us things... hitler taught us that extreme sociologic redudancy works... in the same aspect plants can teach us about the before-time. That is to say... about what the world is like as interpreted without the human experience of "knowledge."
Moreso... if you consider that we share so much DNA with them... that the chemical associations of information would be relatable in terms of emotional response.

    • @MrMassmurdurah
      @MrMassmurdurah 10 років тому

If the plants die then what will convert CO2 to O2 for us? We'd have to create a machine or farm massive amounts of bacteria, the end of plants would spell extinction for all animal life because we are linked to plants via our need for oxygen

Zak Williams Yes but how many people are researching/developing/testing a device that could act as a plant? I've never heard of any (but its a new day so who knows right?) It would be much easier to preserve the system of gas exchange that we have now instead of trying to replace it AFTER it has been destroyed.
