Mine looked a little different on the inside with the tubing but solved my issue!!! Im grateful i found your video. I saw that tube going into the fridge from behind and couldnt for the life of me figure out where it led to. Your video showed how it in the back(inside the fridge) and i was able to put a new line in and after more than 4/5 maybe 6 years i see water coming through the water line/// not many will get it but being able to fix something is soooo satisfactory! THANK YOU!!!
Another big “Thank you!” for making this video. Our GE refrigerator had the stress cracks, & with a frozen water line, started leaking when pressure built by calling for water. I followed your video & had it fixed without a trip to the hardware store. Thank you!
You Sir are a life saver! My GE fridge is 15 years old. It had exact same problem as yours. I never noticed the water line loops inside fridge. It saved me to buy a coupler. I just undo a loop, cut off the aging brittle piece, and insert the 'new' end into the valve. I have chilled water now! Thank you.
You Sir came to my rescue today with this video! We have a house full of company coming this weekend and the same brittle water tube cracked on our side by side. So lucky your video came up and not only was I able to fix it, I did not need to buy anything! Just used the extra tubing in the fridge. Thank you!!!!!
Great video, I repaired my water line before seeing this video. I had the exact same problem as you with the cracked hose in the back of the fridge where the line loops. You’re right poor design! When I took out the bottom drawer I noticed the coiled hose and first thing I thought was it’s probably for cooling the water. So I cut off the brittle cracked loop and uncoiled about 8” of tubing and reattached the tubing to the coupler. No more leaks!
You are a life saver! I have been trying to splice that brittle tubing to avoid replacing it. Your revelation about all the extra tubing nested there was all I needed. Thanks!
My fridge had this exact problem. Thanks to your video I didn't have to buy anything. I didn't even take the piece off that the line runs to. I just trimmed the old line and ran it directly to the piece. No coupler, new line, or anything.
WOW... My KitchenAid is 23 years old and it still is working. Just replaced that front coupler you pointed out at the bottom front. 35 $ from the whirlpool parts dealer.. 10 $ from home depot. Guess which one I bought! LOL... And YES... that roll of tubing is to cool the water before you get it to your glass! Is that mold inside the roll of tubing inside the fridge? They say we should clean the tubing with vinegar but ... HOW????? I also was going to use that tubing for replacing other sections. And I will when I need to.... probably soon. Now, why has my water always.... always come out so slow? 47 seconds to fill a 12 oz glass of water.... OMG. I just don't bother... good video!
All of the exact same problems. Great explanation and instruction. My line broke directly behind the compressor and I had no idea how to replace. The so coupler is all I needed, but I am not handy, so would never have figured that out. THANK YOU!!!!
I have had mine 18 years, water and ice stopped. Unplugged, Fridge reset, it worked again! Cheap ice maker plastic blade crumbled, I use ice trays and store ice (3 types) in zip locks in my chest freezer. I use ice trays. I am noticing puddling on freezer outside door. So I will watch this video😁😁😁
Got the idea from my mom, she bags up her ice, great idea. I have round block and tube ice cubes in zip lock bags....I am gonna probably go with a stainless finger print resistant fridge, nothing fancy, but might stay away from water and ice dispensers?
I had the same puddling again. The water supply tubing becomes brittle and will break at stress bends overtime. I removed some loops from inside the fridge and cut back all the brittle tubing. It's been working for months now. The funny thing is the water dispenser had frozen again before the water break. I turned off the water shut off for about a month before I got motivated to fix the leak and now the water dispenser had been working since. I have my parents vintage fridge from the 50's in the cellar and it runs fine. You have to periodically defrost it though.
@@tmc200527 if there is a tray under bottom, I might just check it and dump it regularly. And bust up the ice and remove it. Just turned temp down on both back to 6... I am gonna probably keep this thing until it goes completely out!!!
@@synthesizerisking2886 I installed a separate shutoff behind the fridge for the water supply. You don't need the water supply for the fridge to work. That is just for the ice maker and water dispenser. The plastic tubing near the heat of the compressor becomes brittle over time and breaks. I just borrowed from the loops of tubing in the fridge behind the bottom draws to replace the bad tubing.
I’m about ready to set my fridge on fire because my water line keeps freezing over. GE told me to kick rocks. Thank you for giving me some ideas on how to fix it!!
Thanks so much. This was exactly what I did this fine Saturday morning after checking traps for crickets and pulling a puddle of water out from under the fridge. You Nailed It!
I had the water line break again from the other side of the valve that feeds to the underside of the freezer door so I used some more of the water line that is coiled in the fridge to replace it.
I want to keep the fridge, but is there anyway to stop the water flow to the freezer? I don't need to use the ice maker or the water dispenser ever again.. I have the fridge non filter water dispenser!!! It keeps making a ice pack at the bottom then leaking on the floor from the freezer side!!!!
If you remove the bottom panel on the front of the fridge there is another length of tubing that enters the bottom left of the freezer door. I had a leak there a year ago but I can't remember if I added a coupler there to replace the bad tubing or if the coupler already existed. Anyway that is where the water line enters the freezer.
Well I have second thoughts...I may keep this old buzzard and continue tucking the towel underneath and save over $1,000. Food is still cold, I just need to steam clean outside. Food is still keeping good and cold, freezer still works...may just get a high-end Samsung dishwasher!!!!
No. I looked at the door when the water first stopped for about 15 sec and quickly came to the conclusion that it would be a lot of work. I called GE at the time and was told that they new about the problem and it was due to inadequate insulation or insulation settling in the door that caused the water line to freeze. They suggested I get it repaired at my expense. Thank you GE.
Would it be ok to use 2 couplers if the line is bent in 2 areas? I have a small leak in one bent area and I would assume the other bent area will be leaking soon too so it's probably better to cut it now.
I had another waterline break at a bend and just pulled some more tubing from inside the loop in the fridge. That tubing under the fridge gets brittle over time. If you have tubing breaking most of it will be brittle so I would try to replace most of it instead of inserting a bunch of couplers. I can't recall if I had trouble finding the right diameter hose for my fridge or not. I recall I just used the extra tubing looped behind the bottom draws. I just checked the tubing by bending it to see if it was still flexible and then cut past the brittle portion by a couple of inches to be safe. It hasn't leaked for a year now. The fridge is still going strong after the capacitor repair though. I think I'm getting my monies worth from this fridge after the repairs.
I have the same refrigerator and my water line broke at the 90 degree bend into the door where the dispenser is. I called GE and they said they do not have a way to replace it, and I need to buy a new door for over $600. I cannot use a coupler because it broke flush with the door. Do you know if the line that goes in the door can be replaced?
Thanks dude,, I was wondering where the lines were that disappeared up and in the fridge,, never thought to look on the inside back wall... duuuh... thanks for the vid !!
When this first occurred I called GE support and was told that is was a known problem were the insulation in the door settled over time and exposed the water supply tube to freezing temperatures. The supply did freeze up again. I haven't looked into it. Some people just have a piece of wire near the fridge that they grab to unblock the water line when it freezes. I have a Norge Fridge that is probably close to 60 years old and had been plugged in for most of those years and just keeps going. GE is not the company is use to be. They sold the appliance division some time ago.
How many wood floors is GE responsible for destroying with this stupid design. So disappointed in them. Next kitchen remodel will NOT include GE appliances.
Talk about destroying floors, when I first moved in my brand new home, they forgot to remove a plastic piece on my dishwasher and it leaked underneath for weeks and damaged my kitchen floor, luckily my home was still under warranty. All of these water appliances scare me!

Thank you so much for posting this! I had the exact same problem with the water line cracking at the bend! fixed it. now I am back in business!!
I have the same recurrent problem. It would be possible to replace plastic tubing by a metal one? Thanks for any advise.

how you gonna take the water line out of the door water dispenser and replace it? That is what I want to know.
So what's the fix for the frozen water line? I replaced the valve and I have no leaks, but still no water out of the dispenser.

Mine broke at the same spot. Did you ever find a different solution?
Excellent presentation. I agree GE really skimped when they did away with copper tubing, Thank you.

Do you have the part numbers for the water inlet valve and the couple? I couldn’t see it in the video.
Sorry if I missed it in the video but where was the water line frozen- what did you do to unfreeze it and has it frozen up again since the repair?
