"Take pictures before disassembly".👍🏼 Back in the earlier century 1986, I too did this but, then had to wait for the film to be developed. All in all it was a much longer process "back in the day".🙄😂
Yeah when our dealership had to order parts from Japan...and wait...and wait-😔those were the best of times for many of us,though.🙂
Enjoyed watching your progress over the years❤
you really need to get a parts cleaner they are cheap and make it so much nicer working on engines and cleaner for assembly
Totally agree these builds would look so fresh with cleaner parts
And vapor blaster machine
Agreed brother and more organised!😮🤔😫😱🤯👊💪👍🤔👍👍
I agree he needs that bad..cant always rely on brake clean or carb cleaner..spend the money and buy what you need..parts washer and sand blaster
It's like talking to a brick wall telling him that. Been watching about 2 years now and mentioned it a few times, it's the only gripe i have with his work.
These videos are quite addictive. Great idea in making them. I think your showing the process from start to finish, with all the in-betweens is a good recipe. Makes it real and relatable.
I would love to see you resurrect a Honda Odyssey/Pilot back from the dead. Seeing you do an RMX got me all nostalgic.
1990's bikes were the best ever made. And looked the best too.
No 70’s are the best looking bikes
lol please. Before they had the mono shock and linkage? Water cooling? Sat extremely low? Those bikes looked like lame mini Harley Davidsons with MX tires.
Something so cathartic about seeing you bringing a fresh breath of life to these old bikes
this guy is gona have hearing damage after all the two strokes hes started in his shop
You're choice of jetting with the 52 pilot and 175 main was spot on.👍
That front light 😵💫😵💫
Be careful with how fast you run that ball hone in and out. You want to achieve a 35 degree cross hatch. You need to take some of that utube money and get a parts washer and since you now have a proper shop you definitely need a shop sink with running water and a drain! Makes your life/work so much easier easier!
Yes glad to someone call him out on something.slow tool speed and fast arm movement straight up and down makes perfect cross hatches.oil stays in cylinder longer for longer Life of engine . Good tip to joe .but he want listen to real Mechanic from what I've seen or never responds tells me he's a know it all and arrogant type of Guy.
@@ofnaguycarlwatts8602 AGREED! Doesnt seem to know much about details!!!
I always keep a 5 gallon bucket of NAPA carburetor cleaner around. Comes with a basket for your small parts and you throw a metal coat hanger through one of the mounting holes in that cylinder to hang it on the rim of the bucket and drop it in there for a couple hours and pull it out it'll look brand new. Pretty corrosive stuff but it definitely cleans up parts super good. Just remember to wear thick rubber gloves when handling it. You definitely know what you're doing though.
I owned one of these for years , great woods bike
dont you think you revved it too much for a fresh piston and rings for a first start
"We're breaking it in here" where, off camera?
Dude you left us hanging on the CR 500 we need closer please 🥺
Very soon! I'm shooting some of the video today.
First, I always enjoy these videos and I have picked up some tips. One improvement would be to wait to post a series of videos until you have finished the repair. I watch part one of a job and it ends without finishing then I have to wait or dig thru to find part 2. Just wait, release them both and put links to the other videos in each "episode".
I don't do enough of this kind of work to justify a parts washer, I dump enough mineral spirits in a 5 gallon plastic bucket to cover the parts I clean and pour used solvent in one gallon plastic jugs until next project. Good enough to get by. @2vintage
Nothing quite like the adrenaline rush of hearing a newly worked engine fire up that first time. It makes all the kicking worth it. Love to see these videos. Takes me back in time.
I would have mic'ed the cylinder and checked if it was to specs . Flushed out the cylinder with muratic acid ; it eats the little metal particals from the honing process them washed it out with soap and water . Blow it out with an airgun . Oiled the cylinder so it doesn't rust and start the assembly process . Our bikes would last for years ! Thank you for the video . Muratic acid can be found at any Swimming pool supply store . Mild and won't hurt the rest of the cylinder . Only use it for cylinders with sleeves . A Weisco Forged piston would last 2 to 3 times as long as cast . Also turn the entire engine upside down and flush out the crankcase with premix . Looks kinda dirty ! 😊
And ya hear that doot doot doot lol I love watching this man for real he inspires so many people to get a machine running lol wish I had his help with my 400ex
1 way to blow an engine up u rev the shit out of a bike with a new piston and u still cant ride
Runs great Joe.... definitely a bit lean on the low and mid though. Go up one size on the pilot jet and raise the needle one groove. Make sure your air screw is approx 1 - 1 1/2 turns out. Looking at approx 35:00 it looks like your air screw is way out so try adjusting that in first as that may be your whole prob. Lean means hot.... a misadjusted air screw can cause quite a bit of damage... careful ;)
think that could be dialled in with the needle adjustment , good practice for the cr500, youlll know when thats running sweet
Get an ebay leak down test kit. You do so many of these motors it would be a good investment and they're under $100 anyway, Leak test it right after you cinch the jug down and then there's no mystery as to whether you have a an air leak. will save you from a lot of tail chasing!
The main is at full throttle. I think you either have a WAY too small idle jet or an air leak.
It still looks like shit I would have power honed the barrel and blocked the head surfaces and fitted new hardware
Need to disassemble the power valve on mine this winter. It's sticking. Hopefully just needs cleaning.
I'm looking forwards to seeing that bean field turned into a giant MX Track!! 😉
I just love how joe posts so regularly, alway look forward to another video!
Yea buddy its like the Saturday morning cartoons for us older folks! I've also learned quite a bit too! 😁😁
I would post more too if I had more followers.
Lovely job Joe bringing this beaut back to life?🤔😮👍👊💪💪💪
I have said it before and will say it again its been fun watching you progress as a dirt bike and quad mechanic.
Check the spark plug color , also do a high speed engine chop test and check the color of the plug . 😊
Sounds like an air leak. Seems the idle is hanging slightly from it too. Sounds pretty good otherwise. The old 250 two strokes can be tough to dial in sometimes.
He don’t care lol 😢
You need an ultrasonic cleaner man. It makes cleaning carbs and smaller parts so much easier and nicer. Great job on the RMX.
He has one but doesnt use it much ! 😃👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I had a 1995 rmx 250 I miss it rhe best bike in the world for northern Washington state 😢
Not hating, Js, factory recommendations are just that. Recommendations. A base line. Proper jetting will be evident when u have a good plug color, optimal performance and good operating temps. I’m some glad you decided to up jet on idle circuit.
My favorite bike off all time when it ran it was magic reminded me of my TM back in the 70s great woods bike. But man did it always fail on me. Man I miss down pipes
I've definitely learned so much watching your videos. Really love your channel. Good vibes from Costa Rica 🤘🏻🇨🇷
I've watched tons of your videos and enjoy the content! I also have a couple decades of experience working on motorcycles. My biggest criticism (makes me cringe every time!) STOP USING HANDHELD SCREWDRIVERS ON Phillips/JIS SCREWS! Impact screwdriver EVERY time! It gives you more torque because of the girth of the handle using it by hand, but if there's even the slightest chance it's not gonna free up gove it a smack with the hammer and it's loose. Trust me you'll never go back!
sweet bike dude.worth a bit now too,
cant believe he rebuilds the top end then rides and revs the bollox out off it before running it in
Man u give me so much confidence to tear into my crf450r it's an 02 and been through it apperantly.
Easiest way to remember which direction piston goes. The ring locating pins on the piston always go towards the intake side. Arrow direction differents from the manufacture. Ring location pins never do.
Sup Joe. I love watching your UA-cam videos. You teach me a lot about motorbikes, and I’m very thankful for all that. I just picked up an RMX250 1990.
Its pretty bad azz sounding it stays up in reves good.
1/4 turn in on the air fuel screw will sort it, always use the air fuel ratio screws and needle position it will help you learn what it does to the engine and then you will start to understand jetting better
The magnet is supposed to stick to the cylinder because there is nickel in the cylinder sleeve
Steel sleeves, like what this one has, are magnetic. All aluminum cylinders with nickel coated cylinders have no iron for a magnet to stick to. The nickel/aluminum transfers heat more quickly than the steel sleeve but has a shorter life span.
Old timer trick man lean the bike over till cab starts to leak then stand up right and kick it
I can tell you the RMX had the smoothest/slickest tranny of any bike i've ever ridden at the time and i can only assume its as good as any current day machine.
dude..buy a sand blasting machine to clean heads and cylinders..it will help you alot..nice work bro.cheers
I had a 1994 suzuki RMX 250 great "woods" tight trails. Bike has a headlight and heavy flywheel for low end. I had the same low-mid range pipe mine was fmf. I would run the 178 jet because of the pipe and only run 94 octane or better. Would be much crisper and check coolant level and clean radiator fins and straighten any bent over, because getting hot would cause the weird sound u say
Does higher jet number mean bigger hole on jet or its oposite?
@@accipiternisus649 Larger number= larger hole.
What about the air/fuel screw? It could be turned in to much?
Turned out too much... In is less air so richer.
Crazy part someone bitched about you not bringing jets and tools to swap out in the field and you didn’t make the same mistake twice 👌🏾👌🏾 but def one at a time play a lil with air screw and clip position the new jets do sound better but def bump ⬆️ seeing its still high . Maybe lower idle with flathead as well
Great job joe ready to rip now mate for defo sounds a lot better after jet change take care man 👍🔧🔧🔧👌
Tips, when you out to get a new piston, always bring along the old piston or the cylinder to the part shop for reference if you can't measure the cylinder or just lazy
Measure the bottom of the piston skirt and if not then yes take the lot in to be looked over I agree 👍
It was the wrong sized piston
It had the wrong piston in it when he got it. Nothing to reference but the jug.
Doesn't do know good if your ordering it on line
Best way I've found to clean a cylinder, case's, power value, etc. Is Paint gun cleaner!! Comes in a 5gal bucket, with a dunk tray!! Soke them for 8-12hrs Comes out completely clean of carbon build up, and or any paint/ powder coat!! Also, the shank of the drill is the size of the cutting diameter in most cases! 🤷
Great great job as usual ! You are excellent at this stuff. I am a faithful watcher !
When you first started it, it didn't seem lean to me. The exhaust smoke tells the story and read your plugs,....... Let the rings break-in a little more. Good show Man.
Should have soaked in carb cleaner BEFORE you tried to pull it apart. The residue and carbon makes it that much more difficult to pull apart.
When are you going to build some jumps on the LAND ?
Remember, go big or go home.
Great videos 😉👍🏻🍕
Air mixture screw. Richen it. Sorted
Outstanding video!
Should do a time attack thing around the field. See what times each bike will do
Great vid joe more of a 4 stroke man myself but digging your Channel as always your talent is awesome your patience is remarkable great job joe
The younger riders think the 4-stroke thumpers are the way to go. I like the sound (brrraaapp) of a 2-stroke, the smell, and the incredible acceleration sensation when you are in the throttle hard ripping through the gears.
4 stokes are trash compared to the thrill of a 2 smoker
Hey joe, I thought u were supposed to use 80W gear oil on 2 strokes.
Hate when that gasket maker 😒 hardens up n u cut the middle out!! Lol 😆 🤣
Good video had to stop watching as soon as you started riding the bike new piston and u we’re just giving it to much at the start usually there are steps to breaking the piston in 😥
Awsome video ! That 250 looks mint now! Great rescue and investigation work 😂
Nice bike, and very fast!
Right. They not known as a Slowzuki for nothing.
Beauty. Sweet. Lean mean yellow machine
Think I enjoy you repairing subscribers bikes better than you buying your own and it has the added bonus of less risk to your investments 👍🤘
Not a two stroke guy. Can you explain power valves and what they do?
Alter exhaust port timing.
Good job man ‼️ I think it might be lean on the lower rpms but other than that it’s running great
i use coppercoat on the base gasket its awsome stuff spray it on the gasket
Joe I want to see more footage of the cam you have in the woods. Love to see the wildlife on the land👍🏾
Hey Joe, looked like it had an exhaust leak...possibly making it lean. Great video brother. God bless America 🇺🇸
I absolutely love your channel. You’re very good at explaining things.
Nice build Joe, by the way, what ever happened to the 1982 XR500 couldn't it be fixed ? If ,so let's get it going been waiting to see itrun
Yeah man also those first jets you were running seemed like you were going faster so makes sense that it was too lean.
Like you vids some advise Don't used sealant on base gasket it not required
Its just a thing he does to all his bikes he knows its not required
@@justencressman why put it on the one side of a gasket and not the other??If it can leak where the gasket meets the cases then it can also leak between the gasket and the bottom of the cylinder. Just saying. 😂
A little grease on the case and cylinder will prevent the gasket from sticking.
Taillight guarantee on that one
nice job
Interesting as usual. Thanks
Running lean or has a leak somewhere. Shouldnt be hearing the ring ring so much when your off the throttle
Awesome build. The bike sounds great. No more missing 👍
You think it sounds good? lol
Once you changed the jets it ran perfect
Great job on that bike I can't hear the mixture screw holding up that idle a little bit other than that sounds great
Idle mixture screw adjustment would probably fix that Surge “
Its the opposite with the hone. You never use a ball hone for a 2 stroke. You always hone incorrectly. Stopping in then reversing then stopping before you pull it out.
Putting in dishwasher brings them up bri
Some people use to put older models RM cylinders on RMXs because of different port timing which would fix the jetting issue.
No one has mentioned the crankcase seals .
They have to hold both vacuum and pressure for a give amount of minutes or you will never get the jetting write
That ring gap is huge
Thats not how jetting works fam... The recommendations from FMF are just a starting point. The may recommend a 50 small jet, but that may still be too lean or too rich. I would mess with the needle and the small jet a few times and you will get it dialed in
I've never taken a power valve engine apart. Very interesting.
It looks like it might need an exhaust flange. It was leaking a little out of the fatty.
Great Vid
At 4:22 is that a crack in the case right above the bolt hole? Or am I just seeing things
Too dirty to tell.
No hate love watching your vids but Jesus let the new piston break in a lil on first cold start 😂
Do you understand jetting?
I would have used your ultrasonic cleaner on those power valves. If you clean those gasket surfaces, you won't need gasket maker.
From one Joe to another, good work man. Just found the channel looking up some stuff on a vintage little flat track deal I'm handling on my own channel. Super good filming quality and audio throughout this video wow
Go get some lucas oil oil stabilizer/treatment slick 50. Stuff is so thick it's used as a premium assembly lube
cheers everyone
Could be a crank seal that went bad
Awesome!!
Ya sounds like it’s running lean
