Reggie Lucas songwriter, wrote Borderliine and was one of the songwriters for the other song. That is why they sound alike. I have thought since the 80s they sounded alike especially in the beginning. Just today I finally looked up the songwriter(s).

Let me make this very clear. I am definitely a Madonna fan if you want the dancing and the whole act on stage the nudity the extra. But with that said when it comes to the voice only Stephanie mills in is in a whole different League than Madonna. Stephanie doesn't have to dance she doesn't have to have dancers and she don't have to show her naked body. It's just her voice. But they're both great entertainers.

Perhaps if Stephanie had done some of what you claim she didn't have to do, her commercial success would have been greater and lasted longer. It gets on my nerves when people play that "they didn't have to..." card in a tacky attempt to uplift one singer and spite the other. Stephanie had/has a terrific singing voice, no one can deny that...but the success of her recording career was relatively limited. This was her ONLY top 10 hit. And she only had one more top 40 hit that peaked at #40. She did not achieve widespread appeal, attracting only a niche audience, and had a relatively limited run in the R&B market where she managed to score some success in. Therefore, perhaps incorporating dancing and a touch of salaciousness might have been beneficial.
