    why don't you use source object instead of using empty?

      We have used both in the tutorial and explained why an empty is more useful. In case you don't need to rotate or change the position of the driver object, you can use the source object itself as the driver - no empty is needed. But for some constraint types, you may need to rotate or move the driver object, in order to achieve the desired result. In those cases, if you directly use the source object as the driver, your source object needs a rotation, which may not be desired for your original scene. Using an empty in those cases makes more sense, since you can rotate or move the empty without impacting your source object.
