fun tidbit: there was a "patch" you could download for alan wake from remedy's site, that was kind of a trap for pirates and would make alan wear an eye patch . the loading screen tips also showed a message advising the purchase of the game
Also in Quantum Break, there’s an Easter Egg at the beginning where Martin Hatch (Lance Reddick’s character) suddenly disappears when the player looks away, implying he also had some sort of time-traveling powers all this time. I also would’ve loved the mention of early Quantum Break when Sean Durrie was the main character before Shawn Ashmore, that being said… that Beta footage threw me off guard, had no idea about its existence. Amazing job on this video, very interesting and I appreciate the minimal spoilers, makes me wanna play Control and AW titles all over again!
I love iceberg videos! Great work, Matt, even as a big Remedy fan, there were still some things I've never heard of. Such as the Sam Lake children's book or Alan Wake being a fantasy game at some point.
The Ocean View Hotel in the GTA6 trailer is NOT a reference to Remedy, at least not originally. The Ocean View Hotel first appeared in GTA Vice City (2002) and it is simply a reference to Miami's famous Ocean Drive (since Vice City is based on Miami), which is full of hotels, including the Hotel Ocean which the building ingame seems to be based on. It remains to be seen if GTA 6 will include any Remedy easter eggs at this location however.
4:19 fun fact. I randomly found poets of the fall from a youtube video in 2016 of drama for life . I listened to that 1 song for a year before I was looking up random games on youtube. I heard poet and the muse and had a "hey wait a second, that sounds like-" moment. Imagine my surprise when this little indie band who nobody around me knew about just....appeared in a game i so happend to watch on a let's play. It was like being alan wake him self with the coincidence.
Great video, love all the Remedyverse lore stuff! 😁 Small correction though, at around @26:47 you say that William Kirklund was the former Head of Research, he actually was the former head of Investigations who quit over after Hartman broke free in the FBC & he got into it with Trench. Darling was the last head of Research before Pope with Theodore Ash Jr. as the preceding head.
Marky Mark was a Boston street thug in his youth. Does that mean he could have taken out several armed extremists with his bare hands? No. But the guy can probably throw some hands.
Forget to mention Hidden Machine... ohh man, Hidden Machine is CANON in RCU (for me). Love this iceberg video, I wish there was another, more in-depth version. Thanx Matt.
For sure! I tried to stay very surface level with this stuff, even on the deeper levels. I want people to have fun making the connections and pointing them out like this in the comments, it’s more fun for me to see people connecting all the dots
I feel like the game that most connects the Rockstar universe with the Remedyverse is actually Manhunt. Back when I was ignorant of such things, I thought that the same developers made both games, right down to the constant use of painkillers as a health mechanic. Manhunt gets referenced a lot in GTA Online and such, but it always felt like it belonged more in the Remedyverse to me.
My theory is that we have 2 multiverse : The Rockstar Games Connected Universe and the Remedy Connected Universe. Max Payne is a universe part of both multiverse, therefor how we can see many similarities in the themes of these games. I think you're right with Manhunt and more importantly the second one. To understand Alan Wake, we must take in consideration the existence of the Pickman bridge and the possibilities it brings... "Monsters wear many faces".
I like the part when you mention which collaborations Remedy Entertainment did with other games, and also the research that you did for this iceberg. Keep it up!!!
4:55 ...and we can make the case that he first appears is on Max Payne 2 - building when he gave us the password 667. He is listening "Late Goodbye" on his Walkman..."Take Control" - Jesse some games later on. Ahti giving us the keys to complete the maze. How to avoid the fire and find the way out from Max's building and of course the Astray Maze last sector needed to cross to reach to final reveal.
During the Mr Scratch attack sequence, did anyone else see a janitor with his back to the camera, moving almost exactly like Ahti does when you first meet him in Control?
52:37 I think there’s more evidence to Alan Wake writing the events of Control to some extent. The Night Springs DLC episodes read as early attempts to escape the Dark Place, akin to the events of American Nightmare, and it’s almost confirmed by the final episode that ends on an allusion to Alan being the creator of its events. Given that possibility, North Star becomes a lot more significant. It is the events of Control, but with plot elements a lot rougher or more vague and taking place closer to Bright Falls with the ending revealing the brother Jesse was trying to free was Alan. It wouldn’t have worked as an escape method because it would’ve been too easy and contrived for Alan to have a yet-unheard-of sibling suddenly rescue him and the consequences of that sort of cheaply-made solution are represented as Alan being taken over by darkness… infused coffee, I guess. Alan not being able to write new people into existence also means Jesse already exists and has a brother which Alan can’t just retcon to be himself. However, just like the events of American Nightmare, this draft while not successful could have been evolved further and, again like American Nightmare, Alan could have pulled influence from his prior scripts made for the Night Springs show. Dylan is used as Jesse’s motivation, allowing the story to exist as her hero’s journey instead of Alan’s own deus ex machina, and while no longer freeing him directly it allows for the events of AWE which in turn gives him an event that can anchor Return to reality. Obviously, not all of Control’s setting and characters can be created by Alan but we know his stories to some extent can influence events and the actions of others that happen before they are even written, as demonstrated by Agent Nightingale’s nightmares and his partner’s death before the events of the first game. It’s possible the events that lead to the hiss’ escape could have been influenced by his story that was yet to be written, and there’s Casper Darling’s unexplained connection to Wake that could have had a part to play too. Hell, Alan's early writings always being somewhat prophetic could be a consequence of him eventually writing stories from within the Dark Place, which is evidently not constrained to time in a linear fashion as Remedy has shown in both their transmedia content and Alan Wake 2.
32:48 Do you also have the Alice wake voicemail? Could you also release the voicemails as their own separate videos, because I can’t find them anywhere online
At 49:42, with Artemis, I have a stretch of a theory based off of the name alone and previous information you gave about Beth Wilder and Jesse, as well as their similarities. What if, the Quantum Break Universe was Greek Gods, and the Control/AW Universe were Norse Gods. In ancient Greek religion and mythology, Artemis is the goddess of *the hunt*, the *wilderness*, wild animals, *nature*, *vegetation*, childbirth, *care of children*, and chastity. In Norse, you have Skadi, also an icon of Hunting and also of the Winter. They share many similarities in this regard. What if, Artemis in QB's universe is the Saga Anderson of Control/AW's universe. This would explain the 'Prevalent visions of Artemis at End Of Time', based off of the Ending sequence in AW2 with Saga. Like I said, sort of a stretch but it makes sense to me :P Fun Fact: Did you know that Greek Gods are able to alter Fate, meanwhile, Norse Gods are unable to change Fate? This however appears to be switched between the QB Universe and the Control/AW universe, if you pay close attention to Beth Wilder's story with this in mind.

Love this video! Remedy and their games have so many interesting facts, it's so funny whenever I'm trying to explain things like this to friends who haven't played their games yet. 😂 Never seen before about the early versions of Max Payne and Quantum Break, the freecam for Alan Wake is pretty cool too!! Really was surprised to learn about the PS4 exclusive level of Control! I've played a ton of that but on the PS5, so when I saw the sensory tank, I was like "???? Huh... I don't remember that?". So cool to still be finding stuff out about that game, haha! It actually reminded me of one of the types of levels you can play in Cyberpunk. You could find monks that would give you a brain dance/ VR headset that would simulate a calming area, like at a waterfall. You'd sit and chill there for a couple of minutes, thought it was a cool thing! (I haven't seen much more yet on Control's level for it, so don't know if they're equally as chill xD)
I think everyone who says Alan can't do X or Y with his power is wrong, and Remedy is just sticking to what Alan himself thinks as the 'official' statement. Mr. Door seems to think all the rules he adheres to and the limits he has are all just Alan being Alan and not actually necessary - and the QB chalkboard speaks of how dark matter formed the universe, and credits Alan with "Let there be light." So I'm pretty much on the "Alan is actually God" train, esp after Time Breaker revealed him as the master of many worlds.
I got to playtest the single player campaign of Crossfire X back in 2020, and I do think its a shame that it was made unavailable. Sure, it was not as good as Remedy's other games but I think it still had enough of that Remedy touch that it was worth playing. I also think playing it on a PC was definitely more fun than with a controller, so in my opinion it was a slight mistake making it an Xbox exclusive. Funny how its still to this day the only game I've played with RTX enabled on a PC, a game released Xbox
