243. Replacing thumb nuts with hex nuts

  • The most expensive part of my jigs can be these little golden knurled thumb nuts. They’re made of brass although they might as well be made of gold as they cost about a dollar a piece to buy them. I started making my own knobs to combat the price of store bought knobs years ago, but getting past these little finger tighteners has been difficult.
I found that we can get more torque for less money if we ditch the thumb nut completely and switch back to hex nuts. For a quarter inch size to replace the knurled nut, we’ll grab two nuts: a 1/4” nut, for the inside diameter, and a 1/2” nut for the outside. With a good bench vise or with even a small anvil, we’ll create a collaboration between the two that will permanently lock them together. It’s not pretty, but this conglomeration of nuts gives you more torque with each turn, and the more important part is that you can choose the threading that you want to add. Need a machine nut? I have yet to see a 1/4” machine threaded thumb nut that’s 28 TPI…but we can easily make one with this method.
    Need a larger size like a 5/16? Add a 5/16th’s to a 9/16’s, and you’re set.
Those work for knurled thumb nut, but to make a studded knob, we’ll need a wing nut, carriage bolt and thread locker. Add the thread locker and wait for it to cure, and you’re done.

You can buy "wing bolts"/"wing screws", without having to make them yourself.

@@BenLee-lw1uw I must agree because I've had many a cup of horrible tea. Not a tea expert by any means but it's fun to try new one in the hope I'll finally find a good one.

I mean this genuinely, with all due respect.. You're awesome creator and I would say trustworthy so this isn't an accusation.. but I've seen this before. I think this is either a miss wording or genuinely convergent ideas, but.. Pocket 83 has been using "Nut knobs" and has been adding them to projects for years. You always credit your tips so I think this might genuinely be you coming up with the same idea. But it's hard for me to imagine you haven't seen his content. You should check him out.
