Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made an unannounced appearance at the Shangri-La Dialogue defence conference in Singapore on June 1, 2024. He urged other nations, including China, to join a coming peace summit on the Ukraine war. But Beijing has said it will not attend unless Russia participates in the summit to be hosted by Switzerland.

The reason why China chooses not to attend the summit is because without Russia's participation, the peace cannot be reached. If a resolution has been made at the summit, but Russia insists the attack, the resolution will be meaningless. So I agree with China's position, and I really hope Russia can stop the attack, make a peace deal with Ukraine, to end this war which kills thousands of people every day.
The problem as it's broadcasted in Russia: we already made peace agreements. But they broke them repeatedly. Even western leaders admitted that it was only for buying time.
They had a chance for peace within the first year of the war. Ukraine and the powers behind it denied it...and kept pumping Ukraine full of weapons and propaganda that they were going to win. Now as the war has dragged on, Ukraine is in a desperate position, and Russia knows it, they wont back down....We should all feel sorry for Ukraine and Ukrainians who got exploited...

You're far too kind. Unfortunately Russia cannot stop now, too many opportunities to resolve the security issues of unchecked NATO expansion in a peaceful way were rejected by the West. It would take the election of a US or EU president who can understand Russia's concerns (as the rest of us do!) to bring this war to an abrupt halt.

I think it's because US has already provided a VAST amount of money and resources to Ukraine. Maybe it can no longer afford to do so and the American people are also tired? I think the consensus is that while China would like the war to end, China will not allow Russia to lose the war. China is interested in ending the war on Russia's terms, not on Ukraine's terms. I think the general belief in China is that this war is about limiting NATO's and the West's power. This is neither moral or immoral, it's just that different powers around the world have different national and strategic interests. In this case, Ukraine is the country that feels the pain, like a thin man between two very fat men in a crowded elevator.
